Behind the Scenes: Float Driving in the Main Street Electrical Parade

posted on June 3rd, 2010 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

It’ll be like seeing an old friend when the Main Street Electrical Parade returns to Walt Disney World on Sunday. I grew up watching the illuminated floats and yes, even dreamed of being part of action and piloting one of those whirling turtles or bugs. Today, we’re showing how it’s done – how our float drivers bring characters to life:

The parade and other special events at Magic Kingdom Park, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot begin June 6 and run through August 14. So, what are you looking forward to seeing during Summer Nightastic! at the Walt Disney World Resort?

I never really thought about the people that have to drive these floats. I guess the magic just takes over. Do all of the parades have drivers, or do the newer parades use different technology?

I always try to see the drives but the most I’ve seen have been a few lights inside the floats.

When was the Parade last in Orlando? I don’t think my son have seeing it.

Also, how long will it stay in Orlando? I hope it’s still there next year.

Some things are better left to “magic” & the imagination, that’s what Disney is all about for me!! I miss Disney <3

I’ve always loved the elecrical parade. We listen to the music from it in the car…very good for long car rides. Especially those car rides to the parks! The introduction always gives me goose bumps!

So cool! Love seeing the “behind the scenes” things. Seems like alot of people forget about what it takes to make that much magic. Love it!!!!! <3

I really wish this would be extended for the whole year. We are going in November and I would love to see it.

I first saw this parade on my honeymoon 17 years ago. It was my first trip to Walt Disney World, and I had tears in my eyes. I hope to bring my 5 children soon to experience that same joy.

In response to post #2 Alexander – I am a parade support cast member at the Disneyland Resort and I will tell you that all parades have float drivers. And, I will say that each and everyone one of us enjoy every moment driving in these parades! :)

i’m glad i’m not the only one who gets goose bumps from the intro! :)
i’ve only been to disneyland/California Adventures once (last year), and the parade was not going while i was there. but they were preparing for World of Color, which was cool! i wish i could go back so i can see the World of Color show, but unfourtunatly, it’s not likely that i will get to for some time…

I first saw the MSEP back in 1986 when I was 2 years, then in July of 2009 at DCA, but it’ll be great to see this parade back at home where it needs to be. The only thing that bothers me is the fact that it’s being promoted as the “Main Street Electrical Parade”, but the pins and drum float still say, “Disney’s Electrical Parade”. Any reason why this wasn’t changed?

What is happening to SpectroMagic while this is here in WDW?

It is unfortunate that the Main Street Electrical Parade and Summer Nightastic are slated to run only until August 14th. Many of us out of state Disney fans have put off our plans to visit this summer until late August to attend the Pin Event (still summertime), but will miss out on these treats as a result. I wish these shows could be extended at least until labor day weekend.

I wish they would have an extended run for the parade. It is my favorite Disney Parade and I wish I could share it with my family when we visit in December.

I agree with those that wish it would be extended for the whole year. I saw the MEP as a child, but my children have only seen Spectromagic the 2 times they have been to WDW. We are coming again in December and would love to see this new version of the parade.

So THATS how its done!! I love the parades and always wondered how the floats were so lively and fun. I would LOVE to be a clever Imagineer…. But I just have to settle for loving the fun they create! :) xxxx
