New Pirate Adventure Coming to Walt Disney World

posted on June 29th, 2011 by Jean Volante, Manager of Dream Making, Disney Floral & Gifts/DEG

New Pirate Adventure Coming to Walt Disney World from Disney Floral & Gifts

What if Disney could bring the magic of the parks and big screen into your very own Walt Disney World resort room? Well, our creative team at Disney Floral & Gifts found a way to do just that with a new guest experience called “A Pirate’s Adventure” and it’s going to be available for sale soon.

You may be familiar with our “In-Room Celebrations,” which feel like Mickey and the gang have come to your Walt Disney World Resort room to create a personalized celebration just for you. Well this new offering is actually an “adventure” prepared by Captain Jack Sparrow. The story is that Jack was chased by a band of pirates and ducked into your room to hide his treasure. The pirate code states the treasure shall be yours if you can solve the riddles he left behind and find the key to unlock his treasure chest. Then the treasure chest will be yours to do with what you will.

Ken Malquist, show director for Disney Floral & Gifts, says it’s a great experience for the entire family. “You know, when we watch kids play, some of their greatest adventures takes place in their bedrooms, building forts and playing dress-up. So we took this concept and came up with a storyline to place the guest in an imaginative, yet authentic adventure,” Ken said.

There’s much more to share about this experience, but for now, know that “A Pirate’s Adventure” will be available for sale late Summer 2011 with delivery to the Walt Disney World Resort Fall 2011.

Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for first photos of the experience, information on pricing and more.

‘Wildflower’ Wednesday: Always Something New Blooming at The Land Pavilion at Epcot

posted on June 29th, 2011 by Fred Petitt, Ph.D., Agricultural and Water Sciences director, Disney Parks

With full support from Jackie Ogden, whose area of responsibility includes agricultural sciences at The Land Pavilion at Epcot as well as animals and the environment, we’re switching from wildlife to wildflowers for this Wednesday’s post – and my first on the Disney Parks Blog.

'Wildflower' Wednesday: Always Something New Blooming at The Land Pavilion at Epcot

When people ask me what I like best about leading the science team at The Land Pavilion, my answer is simple: with fruits, vegetables and flowers as part of the show, every day brings new wonders. This also is what our guests tell us they like best.

For example, our guests recently had a chance to see our first-ever lotus plant bloom in our Tropics Greenhouse. We added the plant to our water garden this spring to showcase edible plants that naturally grow in water. The lotus plant was identified by Les Frey, our Horticultural Manager, as one of more than 20 aquatic plants that would be suitable to grow at The Land Pavilion, the majority of which had never been grown here before.

At The Land Pavilion, we grow more than 100 different food crops from around the world. The Tropics Greenhouse alone has about 50 different food crops, including dragon fruit, fluted pumpkin, jackfruit, miracle fruit, pineapple, and our new fruit tree patio, which has an ever-changing display. In addition to the lotus plant, the water garden contains water lilies, water chestnut, cattail, water hawthorne, bamboo and many other species.

Guests can get an even closer look when they take the Behind the Seeds tour, an hour-long indoor walking tour of greenhouses seen on the Living with the Land attraction.

Talented Actresses Make a ‘Mousecall’ to the Magic Kingdom

posted on June 28th, 2011 by Gary Buchanan, Social Media Managing Editor

Two of the most talented performers in Hollywood and on Broadway visited the Magic Kingdom today as “Grey’s Anatomy” star Chandra Wilson and “Private Practice” star Audra McDonald joined Dr. Mickey Mouse and Nurse Minnie Mouse for a souvenir photo in front of Cinderella Castle.

Chandra portrays Dr. Miranda Bailey on “Grey’s Anatomy” and Audra portrays Dr. Naomi Bennett on “Private Practice.” Traveling separately with family and friends, the talented twosome’s individual visits overlapped by a day and Disney Parks photographer Matt Stroshane was able shoot this photo of them with Mickey and Minnie (who honored the duo by wearing their medical apparel).

In addition to their television stardom, both are accomplished and award-winning performers on Broadway, and Audra has a string of successful solo recordings.

Discover a New You at The Beast’s Library

posted on June 28th, 2011 by Shannon Swanson, Public Relations Manager, Disneyland Resort

Some days I feel like Cinderella and other days I feel more like Ursula but there is one sure way to find out what character you are most like anytime at The Beast’s Library in Disney California Adventure park. During a hot summer day the Animation Building, home to The Beast’s Library, is a great spot to enjoy and rediscover your inner beauty or, if you’re having that kind of day, your inner Beast.

I am proud to say I was most like Mulan. What character do you think you are most like?

What’s My Line? Can You Place These Disneyland Attraction Quotes?

posted on June 28th, 2011 by Erin Glover, Editorial Content Director, Disneyland Resort

Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland Resort

“Yo ho! Yo ho! A pirate’s life for me.”

“Dead men tell no tales.”

“We want the redhead!”

Among the most quotable of Disney Parks attractions, Pirates of the Caribbean stays with you long after you’ve disembarked. The sounds are distinctive – the music, sound effects and especially the dialogue. For decades, guests have brought home their favorite quotable lines along with photographs and souvenirs to remember their trips to the Disneyland Resort. Many of these quotes have become as iconic as the attractions themselves.

Can you place the quotes below with their respective attractions? Leave your answers in the comments and I’ll be back later today with the answers!

  1. “Of course, there’s always my way.”
  2. “Some imagination, huh?”
  3. “This here’s the wildest ride in the wilderness!”
  4. “This includes hats, glasses and of course, these little beauties.”
  5. “Guilty, thank you. That is all.”

And while you’re leaving your answers, let us know your favorite quote from a Disneyland Resort attraction.

Congratulations to everyone who correctly identified the attractions from the famous quotes. The correct answers are:

  1. The Haunted Mansion
  2. Fantasmic!
  3. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
  4. Soarin’ Over California
  5. Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride

It was great to read some of your favorites that weren’t on the list. And for those of you who may have thought our first five quotes were too easy…we’ll make sure to make the next five a bit more difficult to identify!

Sea Turtles Find Sanctuary for Nesting at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort

posted on June 28th, 2011 by Michelle Baumann, Walt Disney World Public Relations

Sea Turtles at Disney's Vero Beach Resort

It has been a banner year at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort as far as sea-turtle nesting goes. The nesting season begins in March and this is the first time in the resort’s history that we have had 380 loggerhead sea turtles nests by June along our 7-km stretch of beach that includes Disney’s Vero Beach Resort.

Families can get in on the fun and learn more about the amazing creatures during the Animal Programs’ Meet-a-Turtle-Expert event that happens at 7 a.m. daily down on the beach.

A turtle researcher takes guests on a fun-filled adventure as they look for clues about sea turtle activity, mark nests and collect data. Kids can join Turtle Troop, a fun and educational experience that combines crafts and a walk on the beach to see a sea turtle nest up close. There’s also evening presentations for resort guests that explain Disney’s overall commitment to sea turtle conservation. Aren’t they too cute?!

Summer Styles for D-Tech at Disney Parks

posted on June 28th, 2011 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

New Smart Phone Cases from D-Tech at Disney Parks

There was once a time in my life that I didn’t carry any portable electronic devices. Today, however, it seems my electronic gadgets have become accessory items similar to socks or ties. Kevin-Michael Lezotte, Product Developer for D-Tech, and I were recently talking about an industry trend he’s seen where people are decorating electronic accessories to match outfits or moods. While I have trouble selecting which outfit to wear each day, I can understand this trend (I seem to frequently change my profile picture to match my mood). To help those who like to keep their technology well-dressed, Kevin-Michael gave me a look at some new summer “outfits” from D-Tech.

The first items Kevin-Michael shared were new smart phone cases which arrive in July. He said the six different colored cases each with Mickey Mouse are an expansion of the D-Tech product line.

New iPhone 4 Covers from D-Tech at Disney Parks

“We continue to expand the D-Tech line with new items such as the smart phone cases that have a metallic finish,” explained Kevin-Michael. “There are so many choices for technology, especially in the mobile phone market. I continue looking for ways to introduce D-Tech items to match the phones that guests are carrying.”

Bright colors and shiny objects were common themes with the new items coming in August. There are four new iPhone 4 covers made of thermoplastic polyurethane, a flexible material that wraps around the phone. Kevin-Michael also added some sparkle to a new case featuring Minnie Mouse (the Mickey Mouse case will arrive for the holiday season later this year).

One of the items I can’t wait to wear is the smart phone belt clip case, which is also arriving in August. The case has one of my favorite details – a Mickey Mouse “world” icon (or is that a Mickey Mouse “world wide web” icon?).

The last item that Kevin-Michael shared doesn’t arrive until the fall, but I couldn’t wait to share the news.

Limited Edition iPhone 4 Case for the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World from D-Tech at Disney Parks

“Coming this fall, we will be introducing some limited edition D-Tech items,” said Kevin-Michael. “The first item will be a limited edition case for the iPhone 4 that commemorates the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World. I know that some Disney fans like to have unique collectible items to show off, so limited edition cases seemed like a great way to go.”

The 40th Anniversary case will use the merchandise collage which I first discussed in February 2011. The case will have an edition size of 1971 (nice touch!) and will be released closer to the actual anniversary on October 1 (stay tuned for more details). Kevin-Michael also showed me a limited edition case with artwork that can be summarized in one word – “Steampunk!” But that is for another Disney Parks Blog article.

The majority of these items will be released at several locations in California and Florida. You can also find a selection of D-Tech items via the Disney Parks On-Line Store.

Disney VoluntEARS Help Build KaBOOM! Playground in Anaheim

posted on June 27th, 2011 by George A. Kalogridis, President, Disneyland Resort

We recently told you about a new KaBOOM! playground at Edison Park in Anaheim that Disney VoluntEARS, our partners and local community were setting out to build. I’m happy to report after three days, with the help of 320 volunteers, three tractor trailers of mulch, 483 bags of cement, a few blisters and eventually a bunch of very happy children, the project is now complete!

I couldn’t be more proud of the work we accomplished. This KaBOOM! playground build reflects our strong beliefs at the Disneyland Resort – the importance of community, partnerships, family interaction and promoting an active and healthy lifestyle for our children. It’s rewarding to know more than 1,200 Anaheim children now have a safe place to play, be active and enjoy time with their families.

The build not only included a playground designed and voted on by the kids, but five fitness stations and a learning garden at nearby Thomas Edison Elementary School, providing students an opportunity to stay active and eat healthy. Disney Parks Chairman Tom Staggs and his executive team joined in the fun, helping to paint a mural and revamping an afterschool program building for local Boys and Girls Club children.

Thank you to all of the neighborhood families who helped build a better environment for their children. To the city of Anaheim, Thomas Edison Elementary School, the Anaheim Family YMCA and KaBOOM!, thank you for your extraordinary partnerships and efforts. Anaheim is a better place because of all of you.

Here is a video that shows just how this project came to life – check it out!

This Week on ‘My Yard Goes Disney’

posted on June 27th, 2011 by Tony Shepherd, Producer, Broadcast Marketing

Greetings from California! I’m writing today’s Disney Parks Blog entry from a room overlooking the brand-new water slides at the Disneyland Hotel. Yes, I’m at the Disneyland Resort filming. Could there be something Disneyland-inspired coming soon to “My Yard Goes Disney?” I’ll never tell…

‘My Yard Goes Disney’

Now, onto this week’s episode. It’s definitely a favorite, based on a classic attraction. Ready for a not-so-subtle hint? Okay, here we go, “Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate’s yard for me!” You guessed it: A Pirates of the Caribbean-themed yard. I think even Captain Jack Sparrow would be proud!

‘My Yard Goes Disney’

Tonight, you’ll meet the Delaney Family. Patty and Mike are personable, energetic parents with three kids who love Pirates of the Caribbean. We spent a wonderful day filming at Magic Kingdom Park with this enthusiastic family and needless to say, it was a pirate-filled experience. And, those Caribbean plunderers weren’t the only pirates who were around that day – you might catch a glimpse of Peter Pan and his pirate nemesis. (On a side note: Is it your dream to ride the attraction a dozen times in one day? If so, then I did it for you on this film shoot!).

‘My Yard Goes Disney’

Taking inspiration from our Imagineers, the HGTV Designers created a spectacular space for this terrific family. The yard is amazing, from very cool water spaces to an over the top, one-of-a-kind, custom-built pirate ship. See it take shape on “My Yard Goes Disney,” tonight on HGTV at 8 p.m.

Check out the sneak peek:

I’ll see you again right here, next Monday. Now, I wonder if I have enough time to try out the new Monorail-themed waterslide before our first filming today.
