Why We Love the Village Haus Pretzel Roll at Disneyland Park
posted on July 21st, 2011 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer
While we’re often recommending fresh fruit, water and other healthful snacks in the Disney Parks, when you’re hungry and on the go, sometimes a cold, crunchy snack just isn’t … well … satisfying.
At Disneyland park, we finally got around to trying the new Village Haus chicken sausage in a pretzel roll, topped with sauerkraut. A spicy mustard can be added for an extra kick. The very thought conjured up a satisfying dose of carbs and protein, with a touch of “healthful” (chicken sausage has a tad less fat than its pork counterpart).
Oh, it was the roll that had us wanting more – soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside. The generous quarter-pound sausage is more Italian than German, but we didn’t mind the culinary cultural exchange. If you gotta have a bratwurst, head to nearby Troubadour Treats next to Princess Fantasy Faire, served on the same pretzel roll.
Disneyland Chef Chris Maggetti worked with a local bakery to come up with the 5-inch pretzel roll, sliced and warm and full of deliciousness. “The bread has a terrific pretzel flavor and caramel color,” said Chris, who is also a food product development manager at Disneyland Resort.
You can opt for a side of fresh fruit – we go for fries. And then do our best to walk it off. Have you tried the pretzel roll – or do you have another quick bite at the Disneyland Resort that makes you happy?

Vintage Walt Disney World: Disney Characters Beat the Heat
posted on July 21st, 2011 by Nate Rasmussen, Archivist, Marketing Resource Center
Summer is here at the Walt Disney World Resort and back in the day, when Mickey and Goofy weren’t signing autographs or joining in the parade for all of our guests, they used to head for the water to beat the heat.
Here in 1983, Goofy takes a break by water skiing in Bay Lake. Check out that very colorful swimsuit!
Back in 1990, Mickey grabbed his shades and some fins and took a little time to float at a Disney water park. Loving those sunglasses, Mickey!
Me? I prefer anything in the A/C in July. The Hall of Presidents, here I come.
Tips for Visiting Disneyland Resort This Summer
posted on July 20th, 2011 by Michele Himmelberg, Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort
My friends and family are always asking me for tips about the parks at Disneyland Resort, especially in the summer when guests come to town and want to play. I’ve been collecting some thoughts from parents who are wise enough to plan ahead and whimsical enough to go with the flow when little ones get weary.
I bet you have lots of tips from your visits on how to best enjoy the parks. Please share them with other readers in the comments below. This video has some cool tips from cast members and guests – and check out the list below to help you plan your visit this summer.
At the parks:
- Get a Dole Whip and then enjoy the show inside the Enchanted Tiki Room (more fun when you sing along with the birdies).
- Let the kids splash around at two fun water spots: in the queue area near Grizzly River Run and at Princess Dot Puddle Park (both at Disney California Adventure park).
- In the warm afternoons, head indoors to shop or take a cruise on “it’s a small world.”
- Two more cool, indoor spots: See “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” at Hyperion Theater and then tour the nearby Animation Academy, with fun artistic activities.
- New: Relax in the shade of the Paradise Garden Grill, a beautiful, 900-seat dining area in Disney California Adventure park. Enjoy the live “Italian-American” music.
Important basics (good reminders for out-of-town visitors):
- Head to your favorite attraction first thing in the morning and get a Disney FASTPASS ticket.
- Make reservations in advance if you want to dine at a specific, sit-down restaurant (714-781-DINE).
- Store items in a locker (less weight to lug around on a warm day).
Summer deals:
- Check out www.Disneyland.com/offers for special ticket and hotel offers, including special offers for Southern California residents.
OK, I know you’ve got lots more. Tell us your thoughts on making the most of your visits to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks.

Wildlife Wednesdays: Disney’s Animal Kingdom Celebrates White Rhino Birth in Uganda
posted on July 20th, 2011 by Jackie Ogden, Ph.D., Vice President, Animals, Science and Environment, Disney Parks
We’ve received fantastic news from the Rhino Fund Uganda. A white rhino named Nande, born here at Disney’s Animal Kingdom 12 years ago, gave birth June 4 to a healthy female calf at the Ziwa Sanctuary in Uganda. The baby, named Malaika (“angel” in Swahili), is the first female white rhino born in Uganda in more than 30 years. Malaika is Nande’s second calf. Her first, a male, was born in 2009.
Nande is one of two white rhinos born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom that traveled to Africa in 2006 as part of the first-ever reintroduction of white rhinos from the United States to Uganda. She was accompanied by Hasani, a male, and joined four other white rhinos at the Ziwa Sanctuary to help re-establish a white rhino population that has been extinct in Uganda since 1982 as a casualty of civil unrest in the region.
Disney’s commitment to conservation and rhinos goes beyond this first-ever rhino transfer. Guests can see both white and black rhinos on the Kilimanjaro Safaris. Research has shown that when people see wildlife face-to-face, they feel a strong connection and are motivated to take action to protect wildlife and nature. The Walt Disney Company Foundation and the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund have supported more than $940,000 in rhino protection and research projects in partnership with non-profit organizations throughout the world. And Disney’s Animal Kingdom is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). With its more than 200 accredited members, AZA is a leader in global wildlife conservation and a link to helping animals in their native habitats.
We are proud to contribute to the sustainability of this critical species and are deeply appreciative of the great care that Nande has received from the Rhino Fund Uganda team, who are closely monitoring her and her baby.

It’s a ‘Carousel of Projects’ from Disney Parks at the D23 Expo

We’re busy putting the finishing touches on all of the incredible experiences guests will immerse themselves in at D23 Expo 2011, and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts just announced an out-of-this-(Disney)-world line-up!
Attendees to the Expo, from August 19–21 at the Anaheim Convention Center, just across the street from Disneyland Resort, will be able to visit the “Carousel of Projects,” a pavilion that pays loving homage to a favorite classic Disney Parks attraction: “Carousel of Progress.” Inside, guests will get a sneak peek at what’s in store for Disney’s five resorts around the world, as well as what’s next from Disney Cruise Line, Disney Vacation Club and more. There will be figures, props and ride vehicles from Radiator Springs Racers – plus a look behind the scenes and the creation of Cars Land, as well as concepts, models and plans for the tremendous expansion of Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom park at Walt Disney World Resort.
Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs will offer guests a glimpse at some of the biggest projects currently in development at Disney Parks (along with a few surprises!) during his presentation on Friday, Aug. 19. And there will be a slew of other must-see presentations and panels throughout the weekend that park enthusiasts of all ages are sure to enjoy, including Radiator Springs Reality: Imagineering Cars Land for Disney California Adventure with John Lasseter, The Making of Star Tours – The Adventures Continue hosted by Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald, A Good Look at Buena Vista Street (giving guests a closer look at the new entrance to Disney California Adventure park), Imagineering the Dream and the Fantasy, and Legends of Walt Disney Imagineering (a spectacular gathering of talent including Alice Davis, Orlando Ferrante, Bob Gurr and Don Iwerks, with special guest and current Imagineer Kim Irvine, daughter of Disney Legend Leota Toombs – hosted by Disney Legend Marty Sklar).
There’s much more magic in store for guests at the Expo, including the previously announced Disney Legends Ceremony, Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives 12,000-square-foot exhibit, an advance exclusive screening of “The Lion King” in 3D, the D23 Expo Dream Store, the Ultimate Disney Trivia Tournament, the D23 Expo Live Auction – plus Disney and ABC stars and much more. There’s a Whole ‘Lot’ Up On the ‘Block’ at the D23 Expo
posted on July 19th, 2011 by Michelle Harker, Merchandise Marketing & Communications Project Manager, Disneyland Resort
I sure hope that you’ve been saving your pennies, and if you’ve haven’t been, you still have some time. Because have I got a scoop for you! That’s right, I have the actual list and even some of the images of the lots set for the auction block come Saturday, Aug. 20, as part of the D23 Expo 2011 Live and Silent Auction.
Have you ever wondered what it takes to make the magic come alive? Our artists know firsthand, that’s for sure. They say that birds of a feather flock together, so here’s a behind-the-scenes look at artist Kevin Kidney who – in my opinion – is never one to ruffle any feathers, but in this case he’s putting the final touches on the Pirate Barker Bird, replicated in exquisite detail from the parrot which appeared in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction in Magic Kingdom Park at the Walt Disney World Resort. See the completed piece by Kevin Kidney and Jody Daily on www.ArtofDisneyParks.com.
What else, you ask? How about out-of-this-world experiences, like a tour of the newly re-mastered Star Tours – The Adventures Continue attraction or go behind the scenes of the Walt Disney Animation Studios for a one-of-a-kind advance screening of Disney’s “Naughty vs. Nice,” the sequel to the beloved ABC special “Prep & Landing,” where you’ll find out the inspiration behind it all with the producer and directors of this holiday classic. Maybe you’d like to explore Walt’s Hollywood? Or take a guided tour of the Walt Disney Archives… It doesn’t stop there. That’s just a sampling of some of the experiences being offered this year.
Many of our Disney-inspired artists were also eager to hop on board, creating original pieces and custom items in a variety of different mediums. You’ll see creations from artists such as Dave Avanzino, David Bird, David Christiana, Ken Crow, Jody Daily, Chip Foose, David Garibaldi, Kevin Kidney, Greg McCullough and Larry Nikolai, among others.
Up next, artifacts and props that are sure to draw some attention, from pirate skulls and cannons to materializing ghosts, from wild jungle animals to a wonderland of displays. Is that all? Of course not. This year, we are excited to host a Silent Auction experience, also taking place on Aug. 20. I see spots, sharp teeth, things of beauty, film and TV props and a statue familiar to all. Take a look!
At this point you have to be saying to yourself, where do I sign up? ArtofDisneyParks.com has all the details about the Auction, including a look at all the Live Auction lots and even a few of the Silent Auction pieces. Tickets for the D23 Live and Silent Auction are $45 and available now at www.ArtofDisneyParks.com. Remember, you’ll need a D23 Expo ticket too, so find out more at http://d23.disney.go.com/expo/.
And as my friend, the Disney Geek, says…”What are you waiting for?”
First Look: Jasmine’s Flying Carpets Makes Royal Debut at Tokyo DisneySea
posted on July 19th, 2011 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks
We’re thrilled to report that our newest attraction at Tokyo DisneySea, Jasmine’s Flying Carpets, has made its official debut and today we’re sharing a first look with Disney Parks Blog readers.
Themed to the Disney film “Aladdin,” Jasmine’s Flying Carpets is a ride attraction where guests soar over Jasmine’s garden on a flying carpet. You can maneuver your vehicle up and down and tilt the vehicle forward and backward, as if flying your own magical carpet.
Walt Disney Imagineering Creative Director Chuck Ballew says you’ll want to look for what he calls “the most beautiful part of the attraction” – a peacock fan effect on the top of the fountain. The attraction also looks amazing at night, where it comes to life with 15 different color sequences that animate as the carpets travel around the fountain.
Check the blog in upcoming months for more images from our friends in Tokyo, Hong Kong and Paris.
