John of the Jungle at Disneyland Park

Yesterday at the D23 Expo, John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation, announced a pretty unusual contest – John of the Jungle.

Lasseter is known for bringing some of this generation’s most loved characters to life – Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Lightning McQueen, Mater – but few people know that he started out as a Jungle Cruise skipper right here at Disneyland park. He left this role with a love of Disney, storytelling and jungle lore – but without any photos of himself at the helm.

Now he’s out to fix that with John of the Jungle, a search for photos of him from his Jungle Cruise skipper days in 1977. Think you might have a shot of John in an old family vacation album? If you do, you could win a trip to the grand opening of Cars Land and a private Jungle Cruise with John Lasseter!

Find out more at JohnoftheJungle.com – and best of luck on the hunt!

  • That is awesome! I hope he gets some good pictures!

  • I believe I may have toured under Skipper John back in 1977 after the Mark Davis new family additions were added. My camera however was snatched by the 26 foot Python Snake during it’s feeding. Luckily it was rescued by Trader Sam who was collecting head shots of all Skippers. I will check at Sam’s Bar and see if John’s pictures are on the”Golden Gun Honorary Skippers” wall.

  • haha… This is really cool!!

    I couldn’t agree more with Tyler 🙂

  • Awesome! Good luck!!

  • Wonderful, inventive idea for a contest. And think of the Disney and life stories that John has to tell re. the 34 years between then and now.

  • This is such a great concept. It rewards long-time Disney fans with the chance to win a free trip — not to mention giving them an excuse to dig through their old photo albums — and might just turn up a piece of Disney history. Everybody wins!

  • What a cool opportunity!

  • Wow!!! i think that year was our first trip to Disneyland, so let me look into all the pictures or in our 8mm film! 🙂

  • what are the odds…I was watching the Pixar documentary on Netflix last night…only ever had the opportunity to visit WDW Orlando…

  • I wish that I was alive in 1977…
