When a Dog Is More Than a Dog at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on February 28th, 2012 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer

Last year we posted about “designer burgers” making waves all across Walt Disney World Resort. This year, the trend is designer dogs – way beyond the old-fashioned frankfurter with a splash of mustard and ketchup.

Here are some of our favorite finds – have you tried any of these meals in a bun?

“Mac “Pork “Burrito

At Fairfax Fare at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, check out the dog topped with mac ‘n cheese and a drizzle of truffle oil. Or the one with barbecued pork and slaw (a version is also served at Downtown Disney Marketplace). Maybe you’ll order the burrito dog with lettuce, tomato, cheddar, jalapeños and sour cream.

“'Cue

In Magic Kingdom Park, Casey’s Corner on Main Street, U.S.A., serves the classic Chicago-style dog topped with tomato slices, dill pickle, relish and banana peppers. The popular eatery has its version of the ‘cue dog with pulled pork, slaw and barbecue sauce. And we still love their chili dog with a flourish of cheddar.

“Philly “Taco

Over in Tomorrowland at the Lunching Pad, order a Philly cheese steak hot dog topped with beef, onions, peppers and cheese sauce. Or the taco dog with ground beef, lettuce, cheese, salsa and sour cream. (A similar version is over at Downtown Disney Marketplace snack locations.) Nearby, Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe brings us a deluxe chili-cheese with crispy onion straws on top.

“The

You can splash ‘n burn (calories) after downing the tropic dog at Blizzard Beach, with spicy banana peppers, tomatoes and onions, or the pretzel dog stuffed inside a chewy pretzel bun.

ESPN Club does the Italian hot dog with fried potatoes, sautéed onions, peppers and mustard, along with the classic chili dog.

Hold the dog!

Behind the Wall: Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland Park

posted on February 28th, 2012 by Shannon Swanson, Public Relations Manager, Disneyland Resort

In my family, special bragging rights went to the first person who spotted Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland park from the I-5 freeway. Currently, the view of the snow-capped mountain is a bit obstructed. For the first time, the entire attraction was covered in scaffolding for a 6-month-long, detailed face-lift.

Check out the video below to see what’s been going on inside and out!

Commemorate One More Disney Day with Disney Parks Merchandise

posted on February 28th, 2012 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

“A

I’m looking forward to celebrating One More Disney Day on February 29. I plan to be in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort that morning for this unique celebration. My fellow Disney Parks Blog author Erin Glover recently told you about a special ear hat being distributed that day at Disneyland park. Disney Theme Park Merchandise has created a few additional retail items to commemorate Leap Day 2012.

“Commemorative

I think Disney ear hats are the quintessential souvenir from Disney Parks (everyone I know has one!). I still have my mouse ears from my first visit in July 1983. We are offering special embroidery on a classic black ear hat to celebrate One More Disney Day. These embroidered hats will be offered for sale at The Chapeau, Curtain Call Collectibles, and Sir Mickey’s at Magic Kingdom Park in Florida, and at the Mad Hatter shop in Disneyland park.

“Commemorative

Artist Jeff Granito designed a playful logo that will be used on shirts for women, men and kids. The logo will also be found on a zipper fleece jacket created only for Disneyland Resort. The nice part is that these apparel items will also be sold via the Disney Parks Online Store from February 29 through March 1. Some of you may recall that we did a similar thing for the 40th Anniversary of Walt Disney World Resort last October.

“A

The Leap Day logo will also be found on an artisan watch that will be offered at New Century Jewelry in Disneyland park and Uptown Jewelers at Magic Kingdom Park in Florida.

Lastly (and probably my favorite), there will be delicious cupcakes, caramel apples and cake pops with the Leap Day logo being offered at both parks. You know what I will be eating on February 29.

I hope to see you there!

From Wheelchair to Running on Air at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on February 27th, 2012 by Darrell Fry, Sports Media Director, Walt Disney World

If you happened to see Kimberly Sheerin running the Disney Tangled Royal Family 5K this past weekend at Walt Disney World Resort, she probably looked just like any other runner in the field. But the truth is she is far from ordinary.

The fact that she was able to run three yards, let alone 3.1 miles, made her unique when you consider that it was about this time last year when she was in a car accident near her hometown of Winter Haven, Fla., that left her as a virtual quadriplegic. A C-3 incomplete spinal cord injury is what doctors called it that day in April when she was rushed to Lakeland Regional Hospital. She couldn’t move her arms and could barely move her legs.

Yet, after several months of exhaustive and painful rehabilitation at Shepherd Center, she regained the use of arms and legs and set a goal of running in the 5K during Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Weekend. Her doctors called it “remarkable.’’ I would argue it was a little magical too. I mean, this is the place where dreams come true, right?

In typical Disney fashion, her entire rehab team decided to run with her. And yes, they all finished the race. Together.

Here’s a video clip of her story.

Moms Panel Monday: More Time, More Walt Disney World Resort!

posted on February 27th, 2012 by Laura Spencer, Social Media Manager, Walt Disney World Resort

How would you spend One More Disney Day?

As we gear up for a marathon of memory making during One More Disney Day on February 29, when Magic Kingdom Park and Disneyland park will stay open for 24 hours straight, I thought it would be fun to hear how master vacation planner and Walt Disney World Moms Panelist Erin Foster would make memories if she had a few more hours at Walt Disney World Resort.

“I’m an avid Vinylmation collector – I lost count when I got to about 600 different ones – but I’ve never had the opportunity to meet the artists who design them. I would love to take my daughters and spend two hours meeting one of the artists at The Art of Disney at Downtown Disney while they make them come to life.

I really like how they have to think inside the box and continue to make creative designs with one little mouse figure. That process would be really cool to watch and learn about, and I think it would be something my family would remember each time we look to collect a new one.

These collectibles have become small reminders of our different Disney trips, and it would be nice to let the artists know they’ve rocked my world!”

What would you do with One More Disney Day at Disney Parks? Let me know in the comments section below!

Booth’s Record Day at Disney is a Family Affair

posted on February 26th, 2012 by Darrell Fry, Sports Media Director, Walt Disney World

Say this for Rachel Booth: she sure knows how to make a grand entrance.

(FEB. 26, 2012): Rachel Booth, 31, of Mandeville, La., crosses the finish line to capture the 2012 Disney's Princess Half Marathon title Feb. 26, 2012 at Walt Disney World Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Booth, with an official time of 1:18:11, bested a field of 19,000 registered runners for the 4th annual 13.1-mile event. A record 27,000 athletes took part in a variety of Disney's Princess Half Marathon Weekend events, including a 5K race and a Health and Fitness Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Disney's Princess Half Marathon is part of the 'runDisney' series of endurance events that take place throughout the year at both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. (Preston Mack, photographer)

Booth of Mandeville, La., signed up to run her first Princess Half Marathon at Walt Disney World Resort this weekend and made quite an impression by not only winning the 13.1-mile race in record time but she also achieved a “coast-to-coast’’ milestone. The reigning two-time winner of the Disneyland Half Marathon in Anaheim, Ca., Booth became the first person to capture women’s titles at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

It was quite a feat. Booth didn’t just win; she dominated, leading the race from start to finish. In fact, she likened the race to a “good morning run.’’ About the only thing she didn’t do Sunday was beat herself. Her winning time of 1:18:11 was just a tad slower than her winning time of 1:18:01 at the Disneyland Half Marathon last fall.

(FEB. 26, 2012): Fireworks light up the early morning sky Feb. 26, 2012, to mark the start of fourth annual Disney's Princess Half Marathon in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Sunday's 13.1-mile event took athletes through Walt Disney World Resort, including routes in the Magic Kingdom and Epcot theme parks. A record 27,000 athletes took part in a variety of Princess Half Marathon Weekend events, including a 5K race and a Health and Fitness Expo at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Disney's Princess Half Marathon is part of the 'runDisney' series of endurance events that take place throughout the year at both Disneyland Resort in California and Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. (Preston Mack, photographer)

Still, she crossed the finish line amid a blizzards of confetti, music, cheers and Mickey and Minnie Mouse. And in typical Disney storybook fashion, it wasn’t the record time or the bi-coastal milestone that mattered to her the most, but rather having her family – her husband, daughter and son – on hand that made the moment memorable.

“This was a lot of fun to have my two children there to enjoy the whole experience and just to see mommy cross the finish line with Minnie and Mickey,” Booth said. “…It definitely has a little bit of a special place in my heart.’’

Mine too.
