‘My Yard Goes Disney’: An Area Inspired by The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure Park

posted on June 29th, 2012 by Tony Shepherd, Producer, Broadcast Marketing

“My Yard Goes Disney” returns to the reimagined Disney California Adventure park this week.
The Castro Family's Yard Gets a Makeover Inspired by The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure on 'My Yard Goes Disney'

Tonight you’ll meet the Castro family – Allen and Paula, as well as 10-year old Paulina and 5-year-old Lia. They love their visits to both Walt Disney World Resort and the Disneyland Resort, and especially the memories they’ve created at the amazing and unique swimming pools at the hotels. It was Lia, in fact, who served as “family spokesperson,” and she is not the least bit modest about her swimming skills. So, when Lia announced that she “can swim better than Ariel,” it got the HGTV Designers thinking.

Any visitor to Disney California Adventure park knows what a big “splash” The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure made when it opened last year, and it continues to thrill our guests who go “under the sea” every day.

The attraction serves as the perfect inspiration for a pool fit for a mermaid, so we brought the family to the Disneyland Resort, where they met Ariel at her grotto and experienced the attraction for the first time! You’ll get to experience that visit tonight and see their amazing new backyard, where they’ll continue to make memories that last a lifetime in their undersea adventure-inspired pool! See if you can spot its very unique feature in this video.

Next week, “My Yard Goes Disney” visits Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawai’i, for the very first time, which inspires a backyard makeover you won’t believe. Until then, enjoy tonight’s episode, airing at a new time at 5:30 p.m. Eastern on HGTV.

Sights & Sounds at Disney Parks: Micky’s Many Thanks; Summer Sounds Sizzle

posted on June 29th, 2012 by Greg Ehrbar, Writer/Author, Disney's Yellow Shoes Creative Group

“The

Last month, The Monkees’ original lead singer Micky Dolenz took Epcot by storm (and I don’t mean the weather). From the enthusiasm of the delighted guests at the three shows I attended, it looks like there might be a new Flower Power Concert Series tradition!

From the road, where he’s headlining in the “Happy Together” classic rock and roll music tour, Micky sends his sincere thanks to Walt Disney World Resort guests and cast members. “Everything is so great there,” he told me. “The people are so efficient, the sound equipment is excellent — and the food is terrific.”

Micky is particularly grateful that everyone accepted him in place of his Monkee “brother,” Davy Jones. He was touched that his friend Peter Noone also paid tribute to Davy in earlier Epcot shows.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Micky, since his sister Coco joined him onstage and since he’s been a Disney fan since childhood. “As long ago as I can remember, I loved the Mickey Mouse Club; I had a terrible crush on Cheryl Holdridge and of course, Annette Funicello [who later appeared in The Monkees theatrical film, Head].

“It’s part of almost everyone’s childhood. I remember the first time I went to the Disneyland Resort — my parents surprised me. I’m a big fan of Tomorrowland, with all the science stuff, and Frontierland — especially Tom Sawyer Island.” Micky was happy to hear that there’s a Tom Sawyer Island at Magic Kingdom Park and is excited about Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island at Disneyland park, too.

Did you see Micky at Epcot? Want to see him back next year? If you can’t wait, he may be coming to your town on the Happy Together Tour this year.

And if you want to keep live rock and pop at Epcot, you’ll want to check out the Sounds Like Summer Concert Series, now through July 28 at the America Gardens Theatre in World Showcase.

Sounds Like Summer presents the very finest tribute bands that recapture the authentic musical qualities of classic rock bands with spot-on precision and artistry. I got a chance to talk with Dicky Lee, guitar player for one of the most popular, Hotel California. They’ve just wrapped another well-received week performing the music of The Eagles at the America Gardens Theater.

“We get more email for our Epcot shows than anywhere else in the country,” he said. “Everything is state-of-the-art all the way. Each note and nuance has all the clarity and brilliance that can be achieved with today’s advances in sound.”

The Sounds Like Summer Concert Series keeps the music going with Stayin’ Alive (tribute to the Bee Gees), June 29 – 30; Slippery When Wet (the ultimate Bon Jovi tribute), July 1 – July 7; Police Experience (a tribute to The Police), July 10 – July 17; Southbound and Company (tribute to Lynyrd Skynyrd), July 18 – July 21 and 2U (U2 tribute band), July 22 – July 28. Showtimes are 5:45 p.m., 7 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. (except on July 4, when showtimes are scheduled for 5:15, 6:30, 7:45 and 9 p.m.).

From the sounds of The Eagles and The Bee Gees to The Police and Bon Jovi, the impact of great music, expertly performed, is impossible to measure. As Dicky says, “This music is the sound track to a lot of people’s lives. Giving them the opportunity to go ‘back there’ for a moment is a source of joy.”

A Closer Look at Vinylmation Coming to Mickey’s Circus Trading Event at Epcot

posted on June 29th, 2012 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

Ringmaster Mickey Vinylmation with Art by Ron Cohee

I recently shared details about the Mickey’s Circus trading event coming to World ShowPlace at Epcot this September. This is the third year we’ve featured Vinylmation as part of this annual event, which has been held since 2001. This time we’ve dedicated an entire day – Sunday, September 9 – to the Vinylmation Showcase. I recently took a closer look at some figures specially designed for this event.

During last year’s event, Disney Design Group artist Ron Cohee created the sketch pictured at the top of this article. It was made to officially announce the first 3-inch figure coming to this year’s event, Ringmaster Mickey. The limited edition figure will have an edition size of 1,500. The original sketch will be featured (along with a 3-inch figure) as an auction lot during the event.
Circus Seal Vinylmation with Art by Caley Hicks

Ron’s Ringmaster figure wasn’t the only one inspired by a sketch. Caley Hicks shared with me her sketch pictured above, which was turned into a 9-inch figure. She originally planned her seal as a 3-inch, Urban Series figure. Once the Mickey’s Circus theme was announced, she repurposed the design. Only 100 of these 9-inch figures will be made for the event!
Circus Lion Vinylmation with Art by Eric Caszatt

Also having an edition size of 100, Eric Caszatt’s lion joins the low-edition-size figure club. His original artwork and final figure are presented above as a side-by-side comparison.
Vinylmation Created for the Mickey’s Circus Trading Event Occurring at Epcot in September

I love the packaging created by Caley for the figure sets coming to the event. I often find that packaging is just as important as the merchandise inside. I particularly like that Monty Maldovan made Bongo and Lulubelle as 3-inch figures, as they aren’t often featured on merchandise. You may recall them from “Bongo,” which was the opening animated segment from “Fun and Fancy Free,” originally released on September 27, 1947.

If you would like a look at these figures and the Disney pins we’ve created for the event, I invite you to attend Disney Trading Night on Friday, July 6. This free activity will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Fantasia G Fantasia J Ballroom. Disney artists Monty Maldovan and Mike Sullivan will also be on hand to sign the recently released Vinylmation – Duffy The Disney Bear figures and Pin Trading Nights pin respectively.

An Uncommon Art Gallery Comes to Life in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort

posted on June 28th, 2012 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

If my last Disney Parks Blog post about WonderGround Gallery in the Downtown Disney District left you “wonder”ing what the big deal was about this new, uncommon art gallery, then check out this amazing video shot on opening day of this popular new location, complete with behind-the-scene chats with several of the artists.

I have to admit, as far as store openings go, this was by far a favorite of mine. The entire vibe of the store – the artists, the cast members and guests – was pure energy! Now, I will admit DJ Wendy brought her own mix to the party as people jammed around her, but I think the space, the art and the artist signings were a surprise and delight to all who came by.

“Hipster “Nemo “The

Some of opening day’s most popular pieces included Maruyama’s Hipster Mickey, Svengsouk and Aoyama’s Let Off Some Steam, and Bonatakis’ Swear You’ll Take Us, as well as the debut of one-of-a-kind Vinylmation 95 platforms by several of the artists. Curious about these artists and others? Did you know that once inside the location, you can actually scan QR codes for some of these pieces to find out more about what inspired the artist to create the piece, along with other fun facts and tidbits? For a look at the WonderGround Gallery art and more, visit the Disney Insider.

There’s so much more to see, so I encourage you to stop in as July will bring new artisans and live performances by our Artist in Residence for the month, Miss Mindy.

So if you haven’t had the chance to stop by WonderGround Gallery yet, then put it on your calendar for the month ahead and make sure to put this hip hot spot on your “must-visit” list next time you’re in the neighborhood.

Epcot’s Off Kilter Marks 15 Years of Music July 1 at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on June 28th, 2012 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

This July 1, Epcot’s Off Kilter Celtic rock band will mark 15 years of performances at the Canada Pavilion in World Showcase.

Off Kilter founder Jamie Holton first started playing the bagpipes when he was 11, inspired by his family’s Scottish heritage and his father’s love for bagpipe music.

In addition to classic Celtic folk tunes, Off Kilter will often throw radio hits into the mix, like Bryan Adam’s “Summer of ’69″ or Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s “Takin’ Care of Business.” (Both Canadian bands, by the way.) If you’re lucky enough to hear Off Kilter play “Farewell to Nova Scotia,” don’t be surprised if it suddenly sounds a whole lot like “Mickey Mouse March (The Mickey Mouse Club March).”

Duffy the Disney Bear Adds International Flavor to His Wardrobe at Disney Parks

posted on June 28th, 2012 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

“Duffy

The story of Duffy the Disney Bear has him exploring the world with Mickey Mouse. On July 1, Duffy adds a new shirt to his international wardrobe with the release of a tee-shirt for a 17-inch bear that salutes Brazil. I’ve been a fan of Brazilian music for years (especially the jazz and bossa nova greats from the mid 1960s); and the photographer-side of me would love to visit one day. I asked Denise Edelmaier, product developer for Duffy, why Brazil was selected for Duffy’s newest shirt.

“We saw success with the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day shirts, so we decided to introduce a shirt for a country not represented in World Showcase at Epcot,” explained Denise. “We selected Brazil as we hope our Brazilian guests who are visiting Walt Disney World Resort this summer will discover the happiness that Duffy brings.”

Monty Maldovan, long time artist and designer for Duffy’s outfits, created the artwork for the shirt. There are limited quantities of the shirt being added to existing 17-inch bears. Retail for this item will be $30.00 (plus tax), and it will be released in the following locations – Disney’s Traders at Epcot; World of Disney and Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney Marketplace; DisneyQuest at Downtown Disney West Side; and the Emporium in Magic Kingdom Park.

“Duffy

In keeping with the international theme, I’m happy to share a first look at the upcoming 12-inch bear for the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. This year, the event returns to Florida from September 28 through November 12. Interestingly, the 2011 festival bear was the second most popular item sold last year (with the cookbook taking first place). This year’s bear has a feature I love – a bow tie!

“Duffy

Guests attending the festival this year will also find Chef Duffy on a limited edition pin. The pin has an edition size of 4,000 and will be released at Epcot at the start of the festival. Jeanne Lewis, developer for Event Pins, also shared with me a look at two holiday pins coming this year. One pin will be released at Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party while the other is coming to Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko ‘Olina, Hawai’i in late 2012.
