A Golden Anniversary, from Abbey Road to Main Street, U.S.A.: Mickey and the Gang Pay Homage to The Beatles at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on June 26th, 2012 by Gary Buchanan, Social Media Managing Editor

Fifty years ago this year, a quartet of moptop lads from Liverpool recorded their first single, “Love Me Do.” When they entered Abbey Road Studios for that historic recording session in 1962, little did the world know that The Beatles were destined to become the most popular musical group in history. Selling more than 600 million albums worldwide — with 71 singles hitting the Billboard “Hot 100” chart — they’ve influenced music like few artists have.

One of the most iconic photos of The Beatles was taken in 1969 for the group’s “Abbey Road” LP. The album cover showed John, Ringo, Paul and George (walking in that order) in mid-stride on an Abbey Road crosswalk in London.

To honor the band’s 50th anniversary, we asked Mickey, Pluto, Donald and Goofy to recreate the photo on Main Street, U.S.A., at Magic Kingdom Park.

Today, we’re pleased to offer it to you, not only as a photo to view (in the same square format as the studio album), but also in additional, high-resolution sizes you can download for digital wallpaper use. After all, since the characters pictured are known unofficially as the “Fab Five” (minus Minnie, who was on hand to help direct this shot), it seems like an appropriate homage to the supergroup known worldwide as the “Fab Four.”

(Click on the photo above in this post to take you to the wallpaper download page, and be sure to check out the terms of use for using the wallpapers before you download.)

As we teased yesterday with our photo of Herbie, we hinted the answer had a lot to do with “love.” And it does — Herbie the Love Bug and “Love Me Do.” (We think Herbie does a terrific job portraying the Volkswagen Beetle partially parked on the Abbey Road curb in the original photo.)

Yellow Shoes Creative Group once again lived up to its name, with Disney Parks Blog Author and Photographer Matt Stroshane taking this picture at Magic Kingdom Park. (A trivia tidbit — Matt actually shot this photo on Paul McCartney’s birthday last week.) The Yellow Shoes production team secured props and other elements to make the scene as detailed as possible. All of the elements in the image are authentic and were on Main Street as they are seen here. The only photo enhancement by the Yellow Shoes production team is a “grainy” hint created in the final image to look more like a photo taken in 1969. Even the crosswalk and street lines are the real deal. Professional-grade thermoplastic, the thick, non-slip and reflective material used on actual streets and sidewalks everywhere, was placed on Main Street, U.S.A., for the temporary crosswalk and street lines that run down the middle of Main Street toward the trolley.

See if you can spot other similarities in this photo, and let us know any other details in the comments section.

All in the Details: Themed Chandeliers Contribute to the Story of New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom Park

posted on June 26th, 2012 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

This week, Walt Disney Imagineering provided us with some great detail shots of light fixtures that were recently installed in various attractions in New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom Park.

“Walt

Lighting is one of the many elements that immerse guests into the story. The look and feel of light fixtures adds to the attraction’s theme, while the color and amount of light produced sets the tone for the location. For example, would The Haunted Mansion be as chillingly delightful without flickering candelabras covered in cobwebs? Or would Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room have the same tropical flair without its flaming tiki torches positioned out front?

“Walt “Walt

Can you guess which New Fantasyland attractions will boast some of these beautiful details? Your choices are Be Our Guest Restaurant, Enchanted Tales With Belle, and Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid (answers can be used more than once). Share your guesses in the comments section below and I’ll update this post later in the day with the correct answers!

Many of you have been asking for an update on the Be Our Guest Restaurant, and I’m happy to announce that we’ll have an update on this topic tomorrow on the Disney Parks Blog. Our Food Author Pam Brandon will share details with you on the delicious menu items you can expect, updates on reservations, and more! Don’t miss it.

Sights & Sounds at Disney Parks: ‘Brave’ is a Feast for the Ears as Well as the Eyes

posted on June 26th, 2012 by Greg Ehrbar, Writer/Author, Disney's Yellow Shoes Creative Group

The legendary composer Henry Mancini believed that if an audience paid too much attention to the background score of a movie, the composer hadn’t done a sufficient job. The background score is crafted to support what you’re watching, to intensify and accent the drama or comedy – literally, to underscore the action.

Soundtrack to Disney•Pixar's 'Brave' Available from Select Disney Parks Locations

That’s part of the fun of soundtrack albums that offer a rich primarily instrumental score. The music gets to take center stage – and in the case of the soundtrack album to Disney•Pixar’s “Brave,” it’s a magnificent listening experience. If you’ve seen the film, some of the music will rekindle your memories. On a purely audio level, though, it can take you a musical journey over a spectacular Scottish countryside without leaving your CD player.

Patrick Doyle’s compositions, performed by The London Symphony Orchestra (which is behind the screen of everything from the first Star Wars film to this year’s “Marvel’s The Avengers” and so much more) is evocative, authentic and exciting.

“Brave” is not a musical in the traditional sense, but has songs. Three are heard over the action: “Touch the Sky,” “Into the Open Air” and “Learn Me Right.” The first two are sung by Scottish singer/musician Julie Fowlis; the third is written and performed by singer Birdy (vocalist) and folk rock band Mumford & Sons of England.

The other two songs are woven into the story, the darkly comic “Song of Mor’du,” featuring Billy Connolly, and the breathtakingly touching “Noble Maiden Fair,” sung in Gaelic by Emma Thompson and Peigi Barker (the English lyrics are printed on the CD booklet).

'Songs and Story' Edition of Disney•Pixar's 'Brave' Features Songs and a Narrated Story with Soundtrack Dialogue

The soundtrack CD is available at select Disney Parks locations (you can spot it in the photo in Steven’s post about “Brave” merchandise). Also from Walt Disney Records is the Songs and Story edition of “Brave,” with four songs and a narrated story with soundtrack dialogue. Both are available at your favorite store or by download.

In addition to seeing the movie, Magic Kingdom Park guests (maybe even you?) have already been getting to know leading lady Merida in person. And brand new at Epcot – your kids can experience the fun and Scottish flair at the new BRAVE — The Highland Games Tournament!

Moms Panel Monday: Beautiful Sunflower

posted on June 25th, 2012 by Laura Spencer, Social Media Manager, Walt Disney World Resort

Sunflowers are strong and beautiful, and produce in abundance seeds to grow and feed. And they always turn towards the light. I know this because years ago, I grew a sunflower bed in my backyard.

Walt Disney World Moms Panelist Dannée Neal

A few days ago, we lost one of our own, Walt Disney World Moms Panelist Dannée Neal, after a courageous fight with cancer. It seems fitting that the sunflower was Dannée’s favorite blossom. Dannée is one of the most beautiful people I have ever met, both inside and out. She had a glow. She was always positive and believed in light and love. Along with her precious husband and family, she loved her friends on the Moms Panel and sharing pixie dust with our guests.

I think Moms Panelist Kaylene says it best in her tribute to her here. Today, I am without words.

Why Was Herbie Parked in Magic Kingdom Park?

posted on June 25th, 2012 by Gary Buchanan, Social Media Managing Editor

It’s not unusual to see famous Disney characters in Magic Kingdom Park. But why did Herbie park himself on Main Street, U.S.A., one morning last week?

Curious? Tune in tomorrow to the Disney Parks Blog for the answer.

Until then, feel free to take a spin of the tires with your own guess in the comments. One hint: the answer has a lot to do with “love.”

Be Brave! Discover Your Inner Merida with an Archery Lesson at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on June 25th, 2012 by Gary Buchanan, Social Media Managing Editor

In 2012, the time-honored sport of archery has been right on target. Several silver-screen blockbusters have featured skilled archers (including the newest Disney•Pixar hit “Brave,” with Princess Merida). Add to that mix the archery competition at this year’s Olympic Games, and it seems the bow and arrow have made a big comeback.

Did you know that Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground offers archery lessons on its lengthy menu of recreational programs?

The resort has always been one of my favorite places to play. I’ve ridden horses, played shuffleboard, fished, jogged, watched a movie under the stars, roasted marshmallows, played some tennis and even taken a horse-drawn holiday sleigh ride through the 750-acre wooded resort. (Check out this page for a complete list of recreational offerings.)

But I’ve never tried my hand at archery, until now. Take a look at this short video, as I get to pretend the lush surroundings near Magic Kingdom Park are my very own Scottish forest.

The resort’s archery instructors introduce you to the sport, teaching you safety and the basic skills you need before letting you try to nail the bullseye yourself. And one of the best things? You won’t have to worry about Harris, Hubert or Hamish pocketing any pastries while you’re enjoying your lesson.

New Hidden Mickey Pins for Summer at Disney Parks

posted on June 25th, 2012 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

New Hidden Mickey Pins Coming This Summer to Disney Parks

The arrival of summer at Disney Parks means that new Hidden Mickey pins will be released for trading. You may recall I gave you a look at the first wave of these pins in January. For the past several years, we have split the Hidden Mickey pins into two different waves, with unique pins found at both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. I spoke with Julie Young, developer for Hidden Mickey pins, about her favorite pins coming to Disneyland Resort.

“I am happy to feature Oswald the Lucky Rabbit on a pin,” exclaimed Julie. “He is part of a 12-pin collection with artwork from the construction fence that was recently found at Disney California Adventure park. The fence artwork was entertainment and made for a nice nod to Disney history.”

There will be 42 different pins released at Disneyland Resort. As with the first wave, Julie selected 10 of those 42 pins to be silver-colored chaser pins.

For Walt Disney World Resort, there will be 45 different pins released, including 10 of those pins as silver-colored chasers.

I’ve officially dubbed Julie as “queen of the Mickey Mouse icon pin,” as she has been developing a variety of these pins for years. I wasn’t surprised to see an icon collection for Walt Disney World Resort, which Julie said was her favorite.

“I enjoy designing pins using the Mickey Mouse icon,” continued Julie. “I’m also a big fan of The Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park. For the cast member costume pins, I combined my two interests into one pin. I love the entire icon collection this year, and it has inspired me to possibly expand the collection next year.”

Please let there be an Epcot Center jumpsuit costume pin in 2013!

As for my favorite pins, I liked the popcorn turner collection, including one pin featuring a legendary character from the Matterhorn at Disneyland park. I’m also thrilled to see more Figment pins, the White Rabbit, Timothy from “Dumbo” and my friend Duffy the Disney Bear (which I mentioned in a previous article).

Look for these pins on cast members’ lanyards in the coming weeks at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort. You can download checklists of these pins by visiting the official Disney Pin Trading website – Disney.com/Pins.

Happy Trading!
