An Update About Merchandise for the 30th Anniversary of Epcot

posted on July 16th, 2012 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

A Shirt Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Epcot

One celebration I’m looking forward to this fall is the 30th anniversary of Epcot, which takes place on October 1, 2012. A few months ago, I gave you a first look at artwork created by Disney Design Group for merchandise we will be releasing. While we haven’t finalized all items or release plans at this point, I’m happy to share another look at items that are coming soon. I caught up with product developer Mary Myers to learn more.
'Epcot 82' Merchandise Celebrates the 30th Anniversary of Epcot

In recent years, Mary has developed theme park logo merchandise for Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Epcot. She recently kicked off the 30th anniversary a little early by releasing new items under the “Epcot 82” banner. I found the shirts shown above at Mouse Gear in Future World.
Upcoming Merchandise Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Epcot

This fall, Mary will introduce four new shirts and a mesh baseball cap. The artwork was created using the style guide originally made for pins. I love the shirt in the lead image as it reminds me of the attraction poster and a shirt I once owned as a child. (The colors in this shirt are amazing.)
Upcoming Pins Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Epcot

Speaking of pins, we recently received several final samples, including the Passholder-exclusive limited edition and open edition pins. I like the stained glass effect of the “I Was There” pin that has Mickey Mouse and Figment sporting their 1980s outer space attire. That stained glass effect looks even better on the super jumbo-sized pin.
Upcoming Merchandise Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Epcot

One item I’m adding to my collection is the “toothpick holder” set that has logos from some of my favorite Future World pavilions, including Horizons (yes!!).

Stay tuned for additional details about the release of these items as we get closer to October 1.

Danielle from FL on July 16th, 2012 at 9:08 am

I love it all. I saw the grey 82 ladies t-shirt last week. I had to hold back on buying it, but I think I just need to give it. Epcot and I turn thirty together and I have always felt a special kinship with Epcot. I love the Horizons logo showing up, it will always be my favorite attraction!

Joachim on July 16th, 2012 at 9:20 am

I’m really excited. Epcot is my favorite park for both me and my girlfriend. Can’t wait to get this gear.

Katie on July 16th, 2012 at 9:36 am

I love all those pins! How are these going to be sold: by wristband, a mini event or first come-first served?

Also, the Figment 8-bit shirt, is it a girl cut T-shirt?

Steven Miller on July 16th, 2012 at 2:39 pm

@Danielle – Agreed! It’s probably why I spend much time writing about Epcot. I love that place! :-)

@Katie – The 8-bit shirt is a unisex cut. As for details about the release of the merchandise, please stay tuned. The event and operations teams are still finalizing plans.

Kerri from MD on July 16th, 2012 at 9:37 am

I’m glad to see Figment playing such a prominent role in the anniversary merchandising. There can never be enough Figment in my opinion!

Erica on July 16th, 2012 at 9:45 am

Steven… I’m drooling!! The shirts, the pins, the patch… The TOOTHPICK HOLDERS!! Be still my heart!

Laurence on July 16th, 2012 at 9:48 am

I love all these items. I especially love it when retro stuff comes out and as a pin collector this is just mindblowing. However I have one small favor to ask please, please have some of these shirts be in sizes 3XL or larger. It’s so frustrating to see all these cool shirts I will be never be able to get. I would buy these shirts in a NY minute if only they were available in 3XL and 4XL.

Steven Miller on July 16th, 2012 at 2:43 pm

@Kerri – I agreed! I was happy to see that Figment was featured as well. I’ve been a long time fan of him.

@Erica – Glad you liked the preview. I too was delighted to see the “toothpick holders.” There will only be these four and they will be sold in a set. The other side of them says “EPCOT 30.”

@Laurence – I checked with the developers. There aren’t currently plans to offer the shirts pictured in this article in 3XL. I know there are a few additional shirts being developed, and I believe one will at least be offered in 3XL.

Robert from FL on July 16th, 2012 at 9:54 am

The shirts in the second row are already for sale in MouseGear, if anyone was interested.

Dena on July 16th, 2012 at 9:59 am

So glad to see so much Figment stuff!! When I was pregnant with my daughter, when we would ride Figment, she would kick and flip like crazy! After she was born last Septmeber, we took her on it (she was about four months) and she danced just like she did before she was born! And her eyes were glued to Figment.

I’ve heard rumors Figment might be removed because it doesn’t get a lot of traffic. Can you please tell me these rumors are ridiculously untrue?!?!

Edward from TX on July 16th, 2012 at 10:15 am

I agree with Laurence! PLEASE make some of these in larger sizes!

Do we know if the shot — um, Toothpick Holders — are in just those four pavilions, or are the others represented as well?

Steven Miller on July 16th, 2012 at 2:45 pm

@Dena – I’ve not heard that about Figment.

@Edward – There will only be this set of four at this time. I don’t believe there are currently plans to make additional pavilions.

Anthony on July 16th, 2012 at 10:33 am

Lets see some Kitchen Kaberet, Horizons, Body Wars, Seabase Alpha, World of Motion, and Cranium Command! Please??

Patrick on July 16th, 2012 at 11:24 am

I’m there in August! Release it soon!

Patrick on July 16th, 2012 at 11:27 am

On another note about the 30th birthday: Is there any plan to release a DVD of all the original EPCOT movies? Living Seas, Norway Pavilion, Universe of Energy before Ellen?

Katie on July 16th, 2012 at 11:35 am

So, I will be buying all of this :) Might have to split between my trip in September and my trip in November!

Sarah from CT on July 16th, 2012 at 11:36 am

Are any of these shirts for women or are they all unisex sizes?

Steven Miller on July 16th, 2012 at 2:49 pm

@Patrick – I would be first in line if something like that was offered. But unfortunately there are no plans at this time. I have to rely on the many hours of videos I took during my visit as a child. Back then, my VHS camcorder was the size of a small car! LOL

@Katie – Thank you :-) Have safe trips in September and November – best time to visit especially with the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival!!

@Sarah – The shirts pictured above are unisex. Yet there will be a women’s cut coming for a different EPCOT 30 shirt not pictured.

Scott on July 16th, 2012 at 11:46 am

I can’t believe I’m saying this: I’d consider a Disney World trip just to shop for some of these things. A+ to your Epcot merchandising team(s)!

Julie on July 16th, 2012 at 12:29 pm

I love this!! I was born in 82 and turned 30 this year – love figment, and epcot – so I will be scooping up as much of this merchandise as I can as it plays to so many of my heartstrings. Please let us know merchandise numbers in case we have to order over the phone. Would love to see some prints and more household items as well!!

Steven Miller on July 16th, 2012 at 2:52 pm

@Scott – Thank you for the kind words! I know the developers and artists will be delighted to hear your feedback :-)

@Julie – Happy belated birthday! I don’t have the specific items numbers at this time. But you can always contact Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Merchandise Guest Services at 1-877-560-6477 or via email – – once these items are released. I’m unsure what availability will look like yet they may be able to assist.

Danielle on July 16th, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Love it all! So nice to see such a great collection of items to celebrate EPCOT’s 30th. Yay for Figment! Now all we need is some stuff with Dreamfinder. I want to see him in the parks again!

Hunter on July 16th, 2012 at 1:27 pm

The merchendise looks amazing! Wish I could be their for the anniversary. Its gonna be a big one!

Gregory from PA on July 16th, 2012 at 1:34 pm

Sometimes I think, visually, I like Spaceship Earth even more than the Castles, as far as merchandising the park icons. Love ALL of this!

Bethany from OK on July 16th, 2012 at 2:18 pm

And speaking of Horizons, are there any plans to bring this pavilion back to life? Updated of course. =) Love the retro Epcot looks!

Joseph on July 16th, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Oh man I am LOVING all this stuff! Really eager to find out what the plan is for releasing it all. I’ll be arriving in Epcot on September 26th (will also be there on the 28th and October 1st for the anniversary) and am already getting nervous that I’m gonna miss out on some of this, lol.

Steven Miller on July 16th, 2012 at 2:55 pm

@Bethany – Greetings, fellow Horizons fan!! I know there are a few of us out there on the internets :-) I unfortunately don’t know of any plans to reconstruct Horizons.

@Joseph – Aces! Great time be down here, especially since the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival starts that weekend. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer to October 1.

Jennifer on July 16th, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Wow, 30 years! I can’t believe it. The first time I went to WDW I remember seeing Spaceship Earth being built. A whole flood of memories going through my mind right now. Can’t wait for my trip in September, I hope to get some of this merchandise.

brad on July 16th, 2012 at 3:03 pm

This blog post was very depressing, because it made me realize I will be spending about $500 on merchandise on October 1st.

Those shirts, that hat, all the pins… wow. Great job on *everything*

And this is coming from someone who has been less than enthusiastic about the majority of the clothing designs available. The EPCOT’s 30th stuff is really a homerun. Great great stuff.

Samantha on July 16th, 2012 at 3:54 pm

I was just thinking the other day that I have an ungodly amount of Disney merchandise and I really need to stop buying so much…then all this merch comes out and I realize that not buying Disney things is an impossibility. What can I say, it’s my weakness. Such wonderful new merchandise! Will certainly be buying at least one thing :)

Katie on July 16th, 2012 at 4:41 pm

Steven, will any of this merchandise be offered at the online store?

Terry from PA on July 16th, 2012 at 5:23 pm

Must say, those shirts ROCK!

I will be needing at least one or two.

Epcot is my favorite park, its just so unique and its such a great feeling being there. Just listening to the great background music near Innoventions or stepping into the Land. If I lived close to WDW, I’d probably be at Epcot most of the time.

Steven Miller on July 17th, 2012 at 5:52 pm

@Jennifer – I’m guessing you took the monorail preview tours that were once offered. I’m jealous :-)

@Brad – Thank you! I will share your feedback with the development and art teams. I’m probably just as thrilled with the designs as you.

@Katie – There will be select items offered via the Disney Parks online store for a limited time. At this point, I don’t have defined details as to which items. Stay tuned as we get closer to October 1.

@Terry – I wish I could live there, probably in Japan or France pavilions. Then again, I always loved the former VIP lounge at the Land Pavilion. It had great decor and lots of awesome carpet!

Tim on July 16th, 2012 at 5:49 pm

Steve, many of the “retro” shirts are a much thinner fabric as some of the regular shirts. Is that trend going to continue or will these be a sturdier shirt?

Charlotte from GA on July 16th, 2012 at 6:37 pm

I am missing the celebration by 1 day!! :( Do I actually have to “be there” on 10/1/12 to get the “I was there” pin? Poor me, I’ll be on a Disney cruise that day…LOL!

Steven Miller on July 17th, 2012 at 5:55 pm

@Tim – Great question. When I photographed them, it seemed like a mixture of fabrics. I can check with the developer for the exact make-up. I know what you mean though about the “thinner” shirts. I don’t think they will all be that way.

@Charlotte – Rough life :-) I hope you have a great on the Disney Cruise Line!!! It’s been way too long since I’ve sailed (any extra room in your suitcase?). We are still determining the release strategy for these items. We’ll know more as we get closer to end of September / beginning of October. Please stay tuned.

Amanda on July 16th, 2012 at 7:53 pm

I just hate that I will have to wait until December to buy some of this. Hope there will be some of the pins still there. I love all the retro stuff. This is how I still see Epcot. It was my favorite park back when we first visited in September of 1986. I was six years old and thought that this was the most amazing place in the world. I still have my Epcot sweatshirt from this trip :)

Christine on July 16th, 2012 at 8:03 pm

Oh how cool! We’re going down for my 30th birthday at the end of August and I’m so glad that they’ll have some of this stuff in the stores down there a little early! =)

Samantha from MA on July 16th, 2012 at 8:33 pm

This made my day!! I was born on 10-1-82 and will be in Epcot that day celebrating my 30th along with my favorite parks bday as well! I was hoping they would release a few things to commemorate this day :)

Steven Miller on July 17th, 2012 at 5:57 pm

@Amanda – There will be a few select items being released for a limited time via the Disney Parks online store. So that may be an option before December. As for your experience, I can totally relate. My visit in 1983 made such an impression on me!

@Christine – Happy early birthday! I hope you have a wonderful trip. There are a few Epcot 82 items available now. Most of the items won’t be released until end of September / October 1. We are still determining how and when they will be released.

@Samantha – How lucky! That’s a great day to share a celebration. I hope you have a fantastic trip.

Kerri from FL on July 16th, 2012 at 8:52 pm

Is the figment button next to the “toothpick holders” one to purchase or a “give away” button like they did for last years 40th at MK?

David from MA on July 16th, 2012 at 9:12 pm

Steven – Will there be a Vinylmation for the 30th Anniversary of Epcot? Also, we haven’t seen an Annual Passholder Exclusive Vinylmation at WDW in some time. When we we see another?

John on July 17th, 2012 at 12:43 am

HA!!! The super jumbo-sized pin is the basis for my new Disney/Epcot tattoo!!!

Phil on July 17th, 2012 at 3:49 pm

where can i get some of these things just as digital art? they would make sweet backgrounds?

Steven Miller on July 17th, 2012 at 6:04 pm

@Kerri – That Figment button comes with a pin and will be a retail item. I have not heard or seen plans for any kind of give-away button at this point. Doesn’t mean it won’t happen – I just haven’t seen anything yet. :-)

@David – There isn’t necessarily going to be a figure designed by Disney Design Group for the 30th. There may be some different options / one-of-a-kind figures coming. I’ll have to check about any additional Passholder Exclusive figures.

@John – Now that sounds amazing! Hope to see it one day.

@Phil – Currently, we don’t have plans to offer these images as digital artwork. I’ll have to see if there is anything we can do about that as we get closer to October 1.

Victoria from NJ on July 17th, 2012 at 6:49 pm

Are there any plans to make an EPCOT 30 iPhone case, like there was for WDW 40?

Steven Miller on July 20th, 2012 at 9:58 am

@Victoria – At this time, there are no plans for such a case. Sorry.

Salvatore from FL on July 18th, 2012 at 12:20 am

I’ll be there for the celebration! I was at the Magic Kingdom last year for the 40th and that was great,so I don’t expect anything less spectacular! I want to purchase the darker Spaceship Earth shirt for sure and the Figment shirt as well. Those will fly out of the stores! :)

Michael from NC on July 18th, 2012 at 4:17 am

These are great, and definitely in the right spirit, but I would *LOVE* to see something offered besides the traditional pins and t-shirts. It seems for every event we mostly get pins and t-shirts, and while that’s great there are surely a *lot* of us who don’t buy pins, and walk away with our cash still in our wallets.

Why not books? Music collections? DVDs? Knit shirts with stitched vintage logos? Replicas of vintage merch? Vintage posters or artwork? Classy stuff you could put in your room or office…

Not saying ditch the shirts and pins, because these are very nice, but there are a lot of us EPCOT fans who are really willing to go all-in on vintage merch but find the scope of traditional offerings way too narrow. Branch out a bit!

Steven Miller on July 20th, 2012 at 10:06 am

@Michael – I appreciate your feedback. I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment. All of the items you mention would be insta-buys for me too. I hope, however, you are still able to enjoy the celebration and perhaps find something of interest.

Trevor on July 18th, 2012 at 4:48 am

Some great stuff there!

Are there any plans to release a 30th Anniversary soundtrack CD? Or even a big CD set like the Musical History of DIsneyland or the World’s Fair one? That would be amazing.

Alyssa on July 18th, 2012 at 11:11 am

A soundtrack would be amazing! I am looking forward to the D23 Epcot Music Panel sooooo much! *confetti*

Carrie from CA on July 18th, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Add me to the list of folks who’d love to have an Epcot music collection! And to the list of those who want less garish T-shirts with simple logos that just sit in the top center instead of covering your whole body.

Ryan on July 18th, 2012 at 9:07 pm

I too would LOVE to have some of the original ride music!

If a CD’s Not Possible due to time constraints, etc, Why Not look into bringing back the “Burn your Own CD” Kiosks they used to have? It’d be a hit!

Thomas from IN on July 19th, 2012 at 8:39 am

1. Agree with Carrie about simpler designs. From an artistic standpoint, many of these are impressive, but they’re not anything I’d be inclined to wear.

2. Figment of today looks dramatically different than Figment of 1982; I wish the design ‘incarnation’ of Figment depicted on these shirts were the Figment of 1982.

3. Add me to the list of folks who would love to see a music collection; same goes for a video collection.

Steven Miller on July 20th, 2012 at 10:02 am

@EPCOT Center Music Fans – You can also add my name to the list of people who would love such a music collection. It would be the one item that I hope to see in my lifetime. Unfortunately, there are no plans at this time for such a collection. I wish I had better news for you.

Lauren on July 19th, 2012 at 1:37 pm

I was there! It was our first trip Disney World! I remembering falling in love with Figment. I still have him! Now my daughter loves him too and she has a big one and a little one. I can’t wait to get an Epcot Center shirt!

Jessica on July 19th, 2012 at 6:10 pm

Hi Steven,
Will there be any special figment or epcot 30th plush? Also what kind of pin is the one of figment alone with the October 1st 2012 date? Is it a passholder exclusive or just a limited edition pin? Please reply.
Thank you so much.

Steven Miller on July 20th, 2012 at 10:13 am

@Jessica – I spoke with the plush team and there will not be a Figment plush offered for the 30th. The Figment pin pictured above is attached to a button. It will be an open edition pin. The two Annual Passholder pins are also shown above as they will appear on their backer cards.

Mitchell from IL on July 20th, 2012 at 5:40 pm

The first trip my family took to EPCOT was while EPCOT was still being built. It was far from our first trip to WDW at the time. My wife and I will be there in November, do you have any information about how as a Passholder we can purchase the limited edition passholder pin? It would sure be a nice memento of our family’s life-long love affair with WDW.

Leslie on July 20th, 2012 at 8:04 pm

This is so great! I’ll be at the Food & Wine Festival for my 30th on my 30th in November and can’t wait to pick a couple of these up!

Andy on July 20th, 2012 at 8:34 pm

I remember working at Epcot during the 15th anniversary and getting a commemorative pin that day. I wound up giving it away to a young child that was mesmerized by the sparkling bit of box it came in. His name was Justin and I’ll never forget that moment. My wife and I will be there on October 16th for the Food and Wine Festival, but only for the day. We’ll also be there the week before Christmas for the festivities. Either way, I plan on getting some of the merchandise for the 30th. Thank you for putting out some of the great items for this occasion.

Jenna on July 20th, 2012 at 9:20 pm

Soooooooooo cannot wait to go this year! We are arriving the 1st day of the food/wine festival(our second time attending). Could barely get a room! We will be going for Not So Scary Halloween, dinner at Victoria & Alberts(treating my folks) and, of course, be there for the anniversary day of EPCOT. someone mentioned the monorail tours. As a kid my parents, myself and older sister went to Disney World every year since 1978. I remember going to see EPCOT being built in 81. We were only allowed to stay at the monorail station and not leave, Snapped a few pics. I need to find them and post them! Now my folks, myself and husband are going this fall. Can’t wait to get the t-shirts and the pins. I wonder if they’ll just be available or something special? My husband and I went to one more day of Disney magic and we got the limited edition Mickey shirts. no wristband or anything, just a massive free-for-all at the Emporium. Since we’re staying at EPCOT we should be fairly close to the merchandise areas between Canada and Mexico as well as the pin trading station.

Mary Ann on July 21st, 2012 at 8:59 am

I am so glad to see that Figment is part of the new merchandise! He is one of my favorite Disney characters, and I think most underutilitzed. Hope he never goes away — too bad we couldn’t bring back the Original Journey into Imagination for the 30th Anniversary:)
