Freshening the Air with Disney Parks

posted on July 9th, 2012 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

New Air Fresheners Coming to Disney Parks - Introducing the Turkey Leg and Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bar

I’m amazed how certain smells can trigger a flood of memories. For me, I love walking in Epcot just after it has rained, as I’m reminded of a family trip in 1988. Disney Parks attractions use scents to enhance experiences (I’m looking at you, burning embers from Spaceship Earth); and I know I’m not the only one who enjoys standing outside the bakery on Main Street, U.S.A. I’ve discussed before how Disney Theme Park Merchandise (and I) have a love affair with food. That affair continues in August with the release of four new air fresheners inspired by iconic food from Disney Parks. These items have been in development for more than a year and they are dear to my heart (and stomach).

New Air Fresheners Coming to Disney Parks - Introducing the Candy Apple and Mickey Mouse Waffle

Last July, the souvenirs team asked me to photograph several food items for air fresheners they were developing. I visited Epcot, where I secured a turkey leg and a Mickey Mouse premium ice cream bar (my favorite treat next to a Dole Whip). At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I photographed a candy apple, cotton candy and popcorn (the souvenirs team decided not to make the latter two). At a team breakfast in Boma at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, I photographed (then ate) the last item I needed – the Mickey Mouse waffle. Disney Design Group artist Caley Hicks then used the images to create these air fresheners.

Once released, you will be able to find these at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

With so many scents to choose from, I think my all-time favorite is the “l’orange” scent from Horizons. So what is your favorite scent?

Oh these all look great – but my first purchase will be the Mickey Waffle, love those little guys.

Timothy from VA on July 9th, 2012 at 11:08 am

Bold. This is why I am so impressed with the marketing/merchandising teams behind the mouse.
Risky, and completely innovative!
LOVE it.

Brian from MD on July 9th, 2012 at 11:18 am

Please let us know when these become available.

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 11:50 am

@Timothy – Thanks for the comment! :-)

@Brian – Currently, they are planned for release in August. I unfortunately don’t have an exact release date at this point.

Donna on July 9th, 2012 at 11:22 am

My favorite Disney Scent is the smell when you walk into the Grand Floridian lobby, don’t know exactly what it is but I would buy an air freshener or candle that could re-create that smell.

Paul from PA on July 9th, 2012 at 11:27 am

Why do the coolest things always seem to come out after we have just visited the parks?!
Will these be available online? I want a turkey leg!

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 11:52 am

@Paul – I don’t know of plans at this point to sell them via the online Disney Parks store. Your best option would be to contact Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Merchandise Guest Services once they are released in August. They can be reached at 1-877-560-6477 or via email:

The item numbers to reference are:

Turkey Leg – 400006506511
Mickey Premium Bar – 400006506481
Candy Apple – 400006506498
Mickey Waffle – 400006506504

Lou from FL on July 9th, 2012 at 11:45 am

Love this, Steven! No-calorie Mickey Waffle scent in my car/office! I dig it! Please expand the line to include:

– Rome burning form Spaceship Earth
– Oranges from Soarin’ (OK, Horizons)
– Popcorn from Main Street, USA
– The “Musty Water Smell” from Pirates of the Caribbean (love it!)
– Apple Pie from Mickey’s Philharmagic

Suggestions of ones NOT to include: :)
– Chili Dog burp from Stitch’s Great Escape
– Skunk smell from Journey Into Imagination with Figment
– Bug gas from It’s Tough to be a Bug

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 12:19 pm

@Lou – Those are great! I’d gladly take the rose scent that was once featured at Journey Into Imagination. And I love that apple pie smell! Totally reminded me of the attraction as soon as I read it.

Bethany on July 9th, 2012 at 11:47 am

Aah, I’ve always wanted Disney to make air fresheners! Too bad there’s not a “The Land” one. That’s my favorite scent in the world.

Erica on July 9th, 2012 at 11:54 am

Pirates of the Caribbean water, Burning Rome, and the scent of El Rio del Tiempo… ahhh… 😉

Katie on July 9th, 2012 at 11:54 am

My favorite scents at Walt Disney World include:
-queue area for Splash Mountain
-Polynesian resort lobby
-monorail interiors
-When you first walk into Epcot past Spaceship Earth
-queue area for Space Mountain
-The interiors of Main Street Emporium and MouseGears
-Popcorn vendor
-Haunted Mansion Doom Buggies
-Glazed almonds and pecans (always paired perfectly with Coca-Cola!)
-The salty sea air in Soarin’
-Sulfur from the fireworks in Wishes and Illuminations
-Casey’s Corner hot dogs and fries
-Mickey Waffles
-Tonga Toast
-The lobby at Wilderness Lodge
-Volcano from Rainforest Cafe

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 12:21 pm

@Erica – Right on! When I was an attraction manager for Mexico Pavilion, I would ride El Rio Del Tiempo nearly every day. Love that smell!

@Katie – “Glazed almonds and pecans” … Now I’m hungry!!!

Brian on July 9th, 2012 at 11:57 am

My favorite scent is the Orange Groves and the Pine smell on Soarin’, Oh how I love those…

Katie on July 9th, 2012 at 11:59 am

I have seen Mickey Claddagh rings online (just pictures though); are they sold at Walt Disney World? If not, they should be! It would be awesome to have iconic regional merchandise with a heavy Disney influence sold in each of the countries at Epcot. Seriously though, Mickey Claddagh rings would be absolutely incredible. I do not know where this person that posted the pictures of the ring got it, but it would be an awesome addition to the ever-expanding Disney adults soft-lines.

Rochelle on July 9th, 2012 at 12:00 pm

Brilliant! What’s the expected price?

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 12:25 pm

@Katie – Stay tuned! I don’t know of rings but I know there is some other Kit Heath jewelry coming soon to the United Kingdom pavilion that have a nod to Mickey Mouse. I spoke with Sylvie the developer for World Showcase who is getting me samples so I can write an article about them. They look great!

@Rochelle – Currently, they will be $5.95 each (please note that retails are subject to change without notice).

Catherine from CA on July 9th, 2012 at 12:01 pm

I like the four scents but I’m iffy on turkey leg. My scents would be chocolate (Main Street Candy Shop), pineapple (Dole Whip), cinnamon (Churro) and mossy wetlands (Pirates of the Caribbean).

Patrick on July 9th, 2012 at 12:02 pm

I know this sounds like a weird request… but you guys should really get an air freshener that smells like Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland. I think that all of my fellow Disney Parks fans are with me there, right?

Jeff from CA on July 9th, 2012 at 12:07 pm

there should be a churro scent lol

Patrick on July 9th, 2012 at 12:25 pm

Smells. When I was a kid it was- unfortunately- the smell of diesel fuel while waiting for the buses that triggered excitement. I think it meant the adventure was about to begin. I do miss the smells of Horizons. It was such a relaxing, entertaining ride.I also really like the smells along Main Street, especially that sticky, sweet air around the candy shop.

Edward on July 9th, 2012 at 12:44 pm

Am I the only one who would love the smell of the Spaceship Earth loading platform. Ahh! the smell of omnimover motors, can smell it now. Would love to have that in my car.

Evan on July 9th, 2012 at 1:22 pm

What about a churro? 😛

Marc on July 9th, 2012 at 1:43 pm

Yes! Rome burning from Spaceship Earth would be amazing! Going next week and can’t wait for the smell now!

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 4:11 pm

@Marc – Have a safe trip! I hope you enjoy your visit :-)

brad on July 9th, 2012 at 1:59 pm

I just need the Soarin orange grove. 😛

I do like the other mentioned ideas of churros, main street popcorn. and rome burning.

Maisie on July 9th, 2012 at 2:03 pm

I would love the smell of churros! My favorite. I would also suggest the smell of Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor (waffle cones!) and the watermelon smell on Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train.

Joanna on July 9th, 2012 at 2:08 pm

I totally echo that I’d love that “Pirates of the Caribbean” smell and the apple pie from Philharmagic. (But I can’t decide whether I would actually be thrilled or horrified to go into a car that smelled like turkey leg every day…)

I’d also gladly take the scent of Main Street U.S.A. There’s something about walking into the park, closing your eyes, and breathing in that just says “welcome to your happy place”.

Also that distinct “you just walked into an air-conditioned attraction line” scent (or is that more of a feeling?), and the “bridge from Dinoland U.S.A. to Expedition Everest” scent.

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 4:14 pm

@Joanna – I’ve enjoyed reading these comments all day the smell found in Pirates of the Caribbean. I can imagine many pirates shouting, “We wants the pirate water! We wants the pirate water!”

I agree that there is something special about Main Street, USA. In addition to the smells, I love the lights at dusk/night. That’s a magical time that reminds me of many visits.

Sonia on July 9th, 2012 at 2:40 pm

Gotta love the smell of Disney water! From Small World to Pirates, that smell says Disney to me above all else!

Deborah on July 9th, 2012 at 2:45 pm

I’ll definitely be looking for the CHURRO!

Tracy on July 9th, 2012 at 2:48 pm

I love the innovation the Disney team employs in their marketing. However, there are two scents that are near and dear to we Disneyland APs. I see now they were mentioned by others – the pineapple spear of the Tiki Room and churro! My boyfriend and fellow APer keeps trying to get me to try churro from other parks or fairs we go to but I’ve remained steadfast. Unless they’re importing them from DL, I ain’t budging!

Kristin on July 9th, 2012 at 2:49 pm

Never thought there’d be so many requests for POTC water smell hehe. I love it!! It means I’m at Disneyland :o)

Craig from AZ on July 9th, 2012 at 2:56 pm

I’m with the others – Pirate Water!

cantrelle from NY on July 9th, 2012 at 2:58 pm

The options are endless! I remember thinking they should offer the scents of Soarin’ – orange groves, pine, ocean, etc. It would be amazing…. Lots of great ideas here, I would love for someone to be able to capture the Dole Whip scent, and my hubby would definitely enjoy a Pirates themed offering. It would be really cool if they could offer a sort of layered option – like maybe a candle with layers of smells that one would encounter as walking down main street, or through each land/park – or even ride (like Soarin’ or even Pirates). Or maybe Disney could partner up with Febreeze to make Scent Stories disks of these places… Aaaah! That would be Ah-mazing ;0)

Megan from IL on July 9th, 2012 at 3:03 pm

Timothy from NY on July 9th, 2012 at 3:03 pm

The smell of the Swwet Pretzels from the Norway bakery would be a great addition! Or the smell from “it’s a small world”, it’s kind of hard to explain, but the smell just exudes happiness!!

Heather on July 9th, 2012 at 3:10 pm

My family and I LOVE the smell of the vegetation at Port Orleans Riverside. When we arrive and step out of the car, everyone takes a deep breath and sighs withy pleasure :)

John on July 9th, 2012 at 3:15 pm

I’m a bit strange, but the smell that takes me to “vacation time” is the scent of the cleaning supplies (maybe deoderizer) they use in the resorts mixed with the scent of sunscreen. Mixed together, it reminds me of waiting in line with my fellow tourists, or heading to the hotel after a fun filled day.

Emily from CA on July 9th, 2012 at 3:18 pm

IIIII dunno that I’d want musty water scent from PotC (but, hey, market research! People seem to love it!), but I almost held my breath in anticipation when you said Dole Whips were your favorite treat–I would LOVE my car to smell like a Dole Whip! I was so sad when it wasn’t included in the list. I think it would be one of the easier scents to recreate and super popular! (Hopefully no licensing issues with Dole?)

Steven Miller on July 9th, 2012 at 4:22 pm

@Emily – I think they would have to hire a different photographer for the Dole Whip image. I would be too tempted to eat it before photographing it – LOL! To show you how much I love them … it was the only thing I did on a recent visit to Disneyland Park. Got a Dole Whip and watched the Enchanted Tiki Room. Awesome!

Tim on July 9th, 2012 at 3:34 pm

This is great. I’ve wanted stuff like this for a while, I’m just hoping that this is expanded to include the scents from Soarin’ and PhilharMagic and availability extends to scented candles as well.

Lauren on July 9th, 2012 at 4:42 pm

Love this!! :)
Will be buying at least one of each on our next trip in September!
Agree, Rome burning from Spaceship Earth would be amazing! And the Philharmagic apple pie smell and the Pirates smell! And the Christmas shop smell for the holidays!
Would love to see this expanded into a scented candle range too! How cool would that be?! xxx

Stefanie on July 9th, 2012 at 4:59 pm

It is so wonderful to hear others note the scents experienced while on their trips and how it brings a sense of nostalgia. I thought we were the only people who appreciated The Pirates of the Caribbean smell!

A suggestion that many may not be familiar with, but the smells emanating from Epcot’s Karamell-Küche are absolutely sinful!

The popcorn cart as you enter Main Street, the Main Street Confectionery (ohhhhh, the cotton candy!!!), The Main Street Bakery (ohhhh, everything!!!), the Plaza Ice Cream Parlor (ohhhhh, those waffle bowls!!!), Casey’s Corner (ohhhhh, those hot dogs!!!), Aloha Isle (ohhhh, those Dole Whips!!!), Pecos Bill’s (ohhhh, those burgers!!!) … can’t we bottle them all into air fresheners? Now I’m (a) incredibly hungry and (b) missing Disney terribly. Time for a trip!

Steven Miller on July 10th, 2012 at 1:31 pm

@Stefanie – I’m a big fan of the Karamell-Küche in Germany Pavilion. It’s a favorite stop of mine. The recently introduced chocolate covered grapes are probably my favorite new treat. A close second are the strawberries. You need to come back! :-)

Tracy from FL on July 9th, 2012 at 5:07 pm

those are just over the top. i always say i’m not on vacation until i’m walking up main st usa and can smell the sugary smells from the confectionery…now i guess i can look at a pic and smell the air freshener lol. what a way to hold on between visits!

Kelly from KY on July 9th, 2012 at 5:10 pm

Oooooh! Churro and Epcot Spaceship Earth orange should be next. (Maybe a Spaceship Earth shaped freshener that looks like an orange?) The same could be done for the Rome Burning scent. A Spaceship Earth shaped ember that smells like Rome Burning? The Churro scent could be in a Mickey Ears shape but look like a churro with cinnamon sugar! I can’t wait for all of these to come out!!!! I AM a little concerned that they will drive me crazy with Disney mania. 😛

Gina from TX on July 9th, 2012 at 5:18 pm

@cantrelle That is BRILLIANT!! A layered candle that “walked” you through different lands, or like you said, one with different scents from a ride like Soarin’. Disney Marketing needs to hire you, because I would fill my house with candles like that!!!
:-) :-)

Tammi-Sue from MA on July 9th, 2012 at 5:33 pm

Put my family’s vote in for the Chocolate Mousse from LeCellier :)

Steven Miller on July 10th, 2012 at 1:41 pm

@Tammi-Sue – I second. I’d also have to add the cheddar cheese soup from Le Cellier. An insta-fave!

Tamara from IL on July 9th, 2012 at 6:36 pm

Creative and brilliant. I will be buying several on our next trip.

Joseph from FL on July 9th, 2012 at 7:19 pm

My absolute favorite’s:

Polynesian resort lobby (was there yesterday, just awesome)

Honorable mentions:
Ditto on the Glazed almonds and pecans
Anything in the “main street bakery”
The smell from the Werthers store in Germany
Lastly, All smells from Soarin will all do

Lori from NY on July 9th, 2012 at 7:28 pm

I would LOVE to be purchasing candles and room scents that reminded me of my favorite Disney locations. I think the car fresheners are a good start and I look forward to seeing (smelling?) them – but the two atmospheric scents that I would love to use all the time are the orange and pine combination from Soarin (I have actually tried to replicate that scent at home with pine and orange-scented candles) and the smell of the wood fire (I think that’s what it is) from the incredible lobby of the Animal Kingdom Lodge. But truly – I would enjoy any scent that recreated one that I experienced at Disney!

cantrelle from NY on July 9th, 2012 at 8:06 pm

@Gina – Lol, thank you. A marketing job at Disney would indeed be a Dream Job – I’m actually a Marketing major. *sigh* The candles/scents will have to do for now 😉 I have to say that I am loving the suggestions for resort fragrances as well. I have not yet been to the Polynesian, but I’d definitely consider it if the smell is as good as everybody says it is! And Joseph, you are right on about the Werther’s store. (great, now I’m hungry)

Steven Miller on July 10th, 2012 at 1:47 pm

@Cantrelle – Have you ever considered the Walt Disney World College Program? I started in 1997 at Pleasure Island merchandise on the College Program. I did a professional internship after graduating with a political science / public relations degree. It was a great experience. And yes, the Polynesian resort – smell and all – is THAT awesome! Aloha! :-)

brittany on July 9th, 2012 at 8:15 pm

The smell of the ship scene in the Pirates ride… That jet smell. And the “Be The Guest” smell in Mickey’s Phillarmagic.

Susan from AZ on July 9th, 2012 at 9:32 pm

I’ve taken a poll among myself, sister, Mom and Aunt. Here are our suggestions (and you may want to take a Blog poll and Facebook Poll before the next round of Air-Freshener designing):

Scent from the Candy Kitchen
POTC Water (bayou with that Disney touch)
Gingerbread Men
Mint Julep
Castle Rose Garden
“New Park Smell” (sell it in DCA!)
Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins
“Snow effect” scent
Hot Pretzel

Kathy from SC on July 9th, 2012 at 10:12 pm

Maybe I’m strange but I love the smell of whatever it is they clean the restrooms with there. I would buy that by the case if I could!

Adam on July 9th, 2012 at 10:16 pm

Glad to see so many people like the burning Rome smell, its always been one of my favorites. I’ve also always thought Disney butter had a particular smell and taste, although maybe that’s just me. The air fresheners are a great idea, looking forward to picking up some up on my next trip!

Jessica on July 9th, 2012 at 10:58 pm

Amazing!! They should make a Spaceship Earth burning embers one. I would buy 50. LOVE that smell. It smells like Disney.

Angela on July 9th, 2012 at 11:49 pm

Glad to see I’m not the only one who enjoys the Pirates of the Caribbean water smell, I’d probably include it’s a small world and Splash Mountain in that mix too. I’ve also always loved the smell of the inside of the busses and the monorail, they always smell like brand new plastic. And let’s not forget the scent of everyone you’ve been in close proximity to that day! :)
