Pastry Chef Jeff Barnes at Disney’s Contemporary Resort makes a mean red velvet cupcake, cream cheese frosting piled high. But the real secret to the perfect cupcake is the tunnel of icing he creates inside the cake.
Take a look as Chef Barnes shows us his secrets to a perfect red velvet cupcake – sorry, no recipe with this one, but you can re-create his techniques for a fancy cupcake at home. We shot this demo at one of the beautiful new homes at Golden Oak at Walt Disney World Resort, with custom, whole-ownership homes priced from $1.5 million. As you can see from the sign, the town has dried out; however, this pajama-clad fellow known as Cousin Elrod seems to have found a creative way to cool off. What’s he daydreaming about? How does he feel about having his bath so close to the tracks, not to mention the chickens? You tell us. Go ahead and “Caption This” photo.
Question: Where is this and how does it involve Disney Parks?
I think the “where” might be a little more difficult to guess than the connection to Disney. If you said “Glacier National Park” in Montana and “Adventures by Disney,” you are correct.
For those of you not as familiar, Adventures by Disney provides immersive, hassle-free and unforgettable group guided-family vacation experiences to destinations in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia. Families traveling with Adventures by Disney receive exceptional service while taking part in extraordinary experiences, assistance from Disney-trained Adventure Guides, engaging activities, VIP experiences and personal touches that only a Disney vacation can provide.
In 2013, Adventures by Disney will take guests to two new exotic locales: Southeast Asia (including Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos) and Scotland (visiting some of the sites which inspired the new Disney●Pixar hit film “Brave.”)
In my role as public relations manager for Disney Parks, I also have the great pleasure to assist with Adventures by Disney. This week I am on a spectacular trip called “Roaming the Rockies.” This trip explores breathtaking vistas in Montana (including Glacier National Park) and Alberta and British Columbia in Canada (including Yoho, Jasper and Banff National Parks).
I’ll let you know how the trip goes along the way, including the awesome excursions, world-class accommodations and delicious cuisine – with some special Disney surprises thrown in along the way. So check back to the Disney Parks Blog for updates. And check out AdventuresbyDisney.com for information on all the exciting excursions from Adventures by Disney.

One of the hardest questions I get asked around here is, “What’s your favorite attraction at Disney?” (Unfortunately, I was told that an Ocean View Room at Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Hawaii doesn’t qualify as an “attraction.”) So, I usually follow up with, “Which Park?”
When someone says Disney’s Hollywood Studios, it’s easy. I love Toy Story Mania. How can you not? Speed, skill, thrills. And I get to break virtual plates, pop virtual balloons, not get in trouble AND don’t have to clean anything up? Count me in!!
You can count the Brown Family in, too, who you’ll meet tonight in HGTV’s My Yard Goes Disney. Aaron and Heather and their kids, Tobey (9), Timothy (5), and Tyler (18 months), love Buzz, Woody, and everything Toy Story! So when the HGTV Designers heard that, inspiration for this backyard makeover came easily!
Of all the families we featured this season, none was more athletic than the Browns. Huge sports fans, all of them! Then, it’s no wonder that they’re big fans of Disney’s All Star Sports Resort – so much so, that the Designers recreated the Resort’s oversized sports court right in their backyard!
This family had so much fun playing football at the Resort that they were nearly late for their meeting with Buzz and Woody! (And, wouldn’t you know it, Sarge and his men showed up to put these kids through their paces, as well!)
Take a sneak peek at the designer’s out-of-this-world interpretation of Buzz’s spaceship. It’s one-of-a-kind… it’s life-size… it’s got on-board special effects… and you can see it here first.
Join us for all the mania on tonight’s episode of “My Yard Goes Disney!” at 5:30pm Eastern on HGTV.

We had another exciting week here on the Disney Parks Blog, with another look at New Fantasyland, visits from singer Carrie Underwood and actress Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, and much more.

My favorite Disney Cruise LinePort Adventures are always the ones we design exclusively for our guests. I love the way we’re able to extend the art of Disney’s storytelling into the ports we visit, and that is especially true in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, Canada.
Check out this video to see two of the charming Port Adventures we developed in Atlantic Canada just for Disney cruisers.
Whether you choose to have tea with Alice in Wonderland, play solider for a day at the historical Citadel or join another exciting Disney Cruise Line Port Adventure, remember…when the ship’s in port, venture ashore!

I’ve been spending a lot of time at the United Kingdom Pavilion in Epcot lately. Recent articles for the Disney Parks Blog had me discussing Beatles merchandise and giving a first look at new Celtic jewelry. I’ve never been to England, but it’s on my ever-growing “places I need to visit” list. However, there are many people who will be traveling to London this summer, as athletes from around the world gather for the Olympic Games. The games will take place from July 27 to August 12, and, like many of you, I will be watching the drama unfold on my television. While Disney Theme Park Merchandise hasn’t developed anything specifically for the games, I did find an assortment of Olympic-themed items during a recent visit to World Showcase.
The Sportsman’s Shoppe, located across from the Rose & Crown Pub & Dining Room, is the appropriately themed destination for Olympic merchandise at Walt Disney World Resort. I spoke with Sylvie Brumbaugh, Product Developer for World Showcase, about the assortment.
“With the games taking place in London, I thought it was important to have the United Kingdom Pavilion carry some kind of merchandise to commemorate this event,” explained Sylvie. “I worked directly with the United States Olympic Committee to identify a small assortment of items including T-shirts, mugs, plush and a few other things.”
One recognizable item Sylvie picked was a plush featuring one of the official Olympic mascots, Wenlock. According to the London 2012 games website, the mascots, Wenlock and counterpart Mandeville (who represents the Paralympic Games), were “created from the last drops of steel left over from the construction of the final support girder for the Olympic Stadium.” Sylvie selected a few different Wenlock plush, including my favorite, the Queen’s guard.
Wenlock is also featured on a T-shirt, along with T-shirts for women and men featuring the London 2012 games logo. To round out the assortment, you will find some coffee mugs and a very small selection of pins.
I hope you will join me in sending good thoughts to all of the athletes participating this year.

As Michele first told you in February, you don’t have to wait until your next visit to explore the Disneyland Resort. With the “Disneyland Explorer” app exclusively for iPad, you can discover photo-fantastic recreations of Disneyland park, Disney California Adventure park, the Downtown Disney District and all three Disneyland Resort hotels – complete with interactive activities based on classic attractions. And with the latest update, you can discover even more.
