Waltz in the Park at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

posted on January 30th, 2013 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

What do you want to be when you grow up? That’s the infamous question every kid, of every age, always gets. Growing up, I loved films, loved to draw and I loved Disney, so being an animator seemed like the perfect fit! While my career path didn’t necessarily lead me to feature animation, I have had wonderful opportunities to see and do things I never thought possible, including the opportunity to learn more about the fascinating processes of animation, like Ink & Paint!

What I love even more is that our talented team of Ink & Paint artists at Disney’s Hollywood Studios continue to keep the tradition of Ink & Paint alive, sharing a traditional process with Disney fans, old and new.

The newest limited edition 1,000 piece titled Waltz in the Park is set to release on March 16 at Studios Animation Gallery and features a delicately and precisely hand-painted Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse dressed in the iconic costumes of Belle and the Beast as they prepare for their royal entrance into Beast’s Castle.

Waltz in the Park will be available in the following formats, including framing options and retails:

  • Unframed Cel – $150
  • Black Frame and Cel – $240
  • Black Frame with Pin and Cel – $270
  • Black Frame with Pin, Postcard and Cel – $280
  • Gold Frame and Cel – $310

If you’re wondering what the pin that accompanies a couple of these formats looks like, wonder no more.

For those of you in the area, several of the Ink & Paint artists associated with this piece will actually be on hand for a special appearance and signing March 16 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Studios Animation Gallery in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

But if you find yourself unable to join us or you’re out of town, don’t worry, Walt Disney Event Services is currently taking pre-orders for the Waltz in the Park cel. Contact Walt Disney Event Services at 407-827-7600, Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. But keep in mind, all orders must be placed no later than Friday, March 15, 2013, at 12:00 p.m. EST. For more information, visit

Don’t let this new cel “waltz” away… instead, let it dance its way into your heart and into your home.

Disney Cruise Line Voyage Report: Adventures in Grand Cayman

posted on January 30th, 2013 by Holly Lail, Public Relations Manager, Disney Cruise Line, Adventures By Disney, Disney Vacation Club

Hello from the Caribbean! Right now, I’m on a Disney Magic cruise that departed from Galveston, Texas, last Saturday. Hopefully you’ve been following along on Twitter, joining the #DCLTexas fun with @DisneyCruise.
Grand Cayman, One of the Ports on a Disney Cruise to the Caribbean

Yesterday we hit up our first destination, the charming Cayman Islands, where we tendered at Georgetown, Grand Cayman. With the view I had from the ship that morning, I knew it was going to be a good day.

After being greeted by the islanders, we hopped on a bus with a friendly tour guide who gave us a rundown of the sites (including the many banks) as we drove to Hell and back. Despite the name of this unique limestone formation, the gift shop staff was very friendly and welcoming, even decorating visitors’ passports with an official stamp from Hell.

Next, we hopped on a boat to the world-famous, and breathtakingly beautiful, Stingray City, where we saw tons of these beautiful creatures.

Today we’re stopped in Cozumel, which I can’t wait to explore. I’ll check back in with you later. Hasta la vista!

Celebrate the Seasons with New Duffy the Disney Bear Items

posted on January 30th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

The start of a New Year brings many reasons to celebrate. This year, there are two months of back-to-back holidays including Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and Easter. I caught up with Monty Maldovan, long-time artist with Disney Design Group, about some of the new merchandise coming for Mickey Mouse’s bear, Duffy the Disney Bear. Monty recently celebrated the release of three original art pieces, including one featuring Mickey and Duffy, at the Art of Disney in Downtown Disney Marketplace.

“I had a lot of fun designing some of the seasonal outfits for Duffy the Disney Bear this year,” said Monty. “We have some new things that our guests have told us they wanted including outfits for 17-inch bears and smaller sized bears that have been a hit!”

The 9-inch Valentine’s Day bear has been extremely popular this year (at time of press there weren’t many remaining in merchandise locations). For St. Patrick’s Day, Monty designed a costume for a 17-inch bear that includes my favorite detail – a bow tie! Monty felt the bow tie was the perfect complement to the bowler hat (and here I thought it was because of my intense love for bow ties).

Monty also designed what may be my favorite Duffy item I’ve seen in the past two years – a 9-inch egg that unzips to reveal a 7-inch bear dressed as a baby chick. He said the design was inspired by previously released plush.

“We introduced Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse plush eggs about two years ago,” explained Monty. “Guests loved them, so we updated the colors this year and added a version with Duffy.”

Other favorites will return this spring including two 12-inch bears. Gardener Duffy will be found at the start of the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival on March 6. Monty said the pocket on the front of his overalls is big enough to hold a Disney Gift Card (smells like the perfect gift for someone with a green thumb). Graduate Duffy looks similar to last year’s design but features different colors.

Finally, we released a series of new Hidden Mickey pins that has Duffy the Disney Bear sporting different Disney hats. These pins build on a collection introduced last year of Duffy wearing hats. Look for them on cast members’ lanyards at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

Disney VoluntEARS Spend ‘A Day at the Beach’ to Help Keep Florida’s Coastline Clean

posted on January 29th, 2013 by Wilma Colón, Media Relations Manager, Walt Disney World Resort

More than 150 VoluntEARS from Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Cruise Line did their part on Friday, January 25, to help clean up a stretch of beach along Florida’s coastline.

With temperatures in the 70s that turned this January morning into a perfect day at the beach, Disney VoluntEARS worked alongside friends, family and community partners from Keep Brevard Beautiful, the United States Coast Guard and the Canaveral Port Authority.

By the end of the cleanup, the team cleared more than 250 pounds of trash and debris from coastal areas near the Disney Cruise Line terminal in Port Canaveral. Picking up litter keeps our shores pristine and safe for beachgoers to enjoy, while also preventing trash from harming wildlife such as sea turtles, birds and fish.

Disney VoluntEARS have supported local coastal cleanup efforts for almost two decades. Their commitment has contributed to the removal of approximately 40,000 pounds of trash along fragile waterways.

Nice work for a day at the beach!

Answers to Popular Questions About Shopping at Disney Parks

posted on January 29th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

I’ve received many questions during my time as an author for the Disney Parks Blog about shopping at Disney Parks. Here are answers to some popular questions designed to help you during your next shopping expedition.
Authentic & Original

Look for the “Authentic Original” Logo
While shopping at Disney Parks, I’ve heard some guests say they can “find a particular item back
at home.” Disney Theme Park Merchandise may partner with Disney Stores or Disney Consumer Products on occasion to offer similar items, yet there are thousands of unique souvenirs found only at Disney Parks including apparel, collectibles, seasonal goods, consumables and much more. We use the “Authentic Original” logo to identify those Disney Parks only items (look for the logo either on packaging or on an item physically). Items with this logo won’t be found at local Disney Stores, or at other locations that carry Disney merchandise beyond Disney Parks (one small exception is the Disney Parks online store).
Buy it online

Can I Buy It Online?
I’m frequently asked on the Disney Parks Blog if a particular item is sold online. The answer to that
question depends on the item. The Disney Parks online store is a boutique shop within and offers select items from Disney Parks (many things with the “Authentic Original” logo). The small assortment is ever changing as there is a limit to the amount of items we offer at any given moment.
Disney Parks Shoppes

Disney Parks Shoppes on Facebook
If you are a fan of the Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort pages on Facebook, you may have recently seen the new Disney Parks Shoppes. This Facebook shop contains some greatest hits from Disney Parks (fulfillment is done by We periodically offer “Facebook First” items and special deals to fans of these Facebook pages.

Disney Parks and Resorts Merchandise Guest Services
If you are away from Disney Parks but interested in merchandise, you can contact the Merchandise
Guest Services team. These cast members can help you obtain select items at Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai`i.

There are two options available to contact them: by telephone at 877-560-6477 or by email at Please note that applicable sales tax plus shipping and handling fees will apply; and availability of select items may change.

I’ve heard it’s tough to be a bug, but it looks like a lot of fun from this point of view of “a bug’s land” at Disney California Adventure park. For this video we took a spin on Francis’ Ladybug Boogie, Flik’s Flyers, Tuck and Roll’s Drive ‘Em Buggies and Heimlich’s Chew Chew Train. Check it out and see what the buzz is all about!

A Sneak Peek at New California Grill Menu at Disney’s Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on January 29th, 2013 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer

'Pork Two Ways' from the New California Grill Menu at Disney's Contemporary Resort at Walt Disney World Resort

California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort closes Feb. 1 until late summer, when the beautiful space will reopen with new décor, a new kitchen and a new menu that’s already in the works. But Chef Brian Piasecki already has started to work on the new menu, which updates some of the restaurant’s classics, like the pork and polenta, which becomes “Pork Two Ways” with wood-fired tenderloin with goat cheese polenta, and braised lacquered pork belly with country applesauce.

And even though Yoshie is retiring, she was a wonderful mentor to the California Grill team, and sushi chefs will continue her legacy. Creative new tastes include the Spicy Kaza roll with tuna, shrimp and scallops with tempura crunch and fireball sauce; Japanese-style bone marrow with crunchy panko, sweet onion jam and beef tartare; and Sea Urchin Nigiri with mamanori (soybean paper), salmon roe and freshly grated wasabi root.

What may be the ultimate comfort food is the new 24-hour braised beef short rib with truffle whipped potatoes, vol-au-vent (puff pastry) with roasted vegetables and natural jus.

Chef Brian is just getting started. Stay tuned for more updates.

Have You Seen This Box?

posted on January 28th, 2013 by Thomas Smith, Editorial Content Director, Disney Parks

We’ve been hearing a lot about a box full of unexplained artifacts that is the basis of a film starring George Clooney being developed at The Walt Disney Studios. The project is known as 1952 (although we’ve just learned it’s now called Tomorrowland – okay, we’re officially intrigued) and is from The Incredibles director Brad Bird and Lost creator Damon Lindelof.

Last week, the pair tweeted out tantalizing pictures of this mysterious box purportedly found in the Walt Disney Imagineering archives. What’s in the box, and what does it have to do with us? We’re as eager as you are to find out.
