Nine New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise Items from Disney Parks

posted on February 26th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

My love for the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disney Parks grows more and more each year. Granted, my mother will probably remind me that I first rode the attraction with my eyes closed (I was seven at the time). Since then, my eyes have been opened to the awesomeness of this classic Disney attraction. The home and décor team at Disney Theme Park Merchandise recently created some new Disney Parks authentic merchandise inspired by the attraction’s amazing details. I caught up with Cody Reynolds, a creative manager at Disney Design Group, who shared some insight into these nine new items.

The Hourglass
“I’ve wanted to make an hourglass for years,” said Cody, who is an 18-year Disney cast member. “This 7 ½-inch-tall hourglass has gargoyles from the stretching room and the famous wallpaper design on the top. White sand is more commonly used in hourglasses, yet we chose purple sand to match the overall color palette. The hourglass keeps track of about an hour.”

Candelabra
My favorite item is the candelabra, which also features a gargoyle. Cody said the base was inspired by the paneling found in the queue just after the stretching room.

Frame
The frame holds 5”x 7” photographs and is reminiscent of the plaque from outside the attraction. Cody said the merchandise looks so authentic because the “development teams took lots of photos inside the attraction early one morning.”

Music Box
“We needed a music box because music is an important part to the attraction,” explained Cody. “This music box plays ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts,’ and draws inspiration from Madame Leota’s tombstone outside the attraction. Her epitaph is included on the inside lid.”

Coaster Set
The four-coaster set also uses some of the more recognizable epitaphs from the outside graveyard, including those of Madame Leota and Master Gracey.

Bat Bottle Stopper
The bottle stopper resembles the bat stanchion topper from the queue.

Pillow - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks Throw - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks

Pillow and Throw
“For the pillow, we considered using the chair design from the endless hallway scene,” continued Cody. “Yet we selected a simple black pillow with the phrase ‘Rest in Peace.’ The back of the pillow and the throw include the famous wallpaper design.”

Candy Dish
The candy dish also uses the wallpaper motif, along with the iconic phrase “Room for One More,” which is a nod to the ghost host inviting guests to join the 999 happy haunts that live in the mansion.

Tarot Cards
Cody mentioned the tarot card-like hangtags found on the items were inspired by Madame Leota’s cards. The purple card contains verbiage that sounds like how Madame Leota would describe the new merchandise. The cards also contain nods to details found inside and outside the attraction.

These items will be found in select locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. We will also be carrying them via the Disney Parks online store at a future date. I’d love for all of these items to follow me home!

Any chance at some wallpaper? We can’t wait!

Steven Miller on March 4th, 2013 at 12:19 pm

@David – Thank you for such a nice comment!

@Carlos – I don’t know of any such plans. It would be awesome if that existed. A good friend of mine has a Haunted Mansion themed bathroom. I’m guessing he would be replacing the wallpaper if such a thing ever existed.

Great merchandising !
Next step, Phantom Manor merchandising ?

In Parisian resort, we only have mugs, helium balloons, and this unknow bear called Duffy…

Steven Miller on March 4th, 2013 at 12:20 pm

@Nemo – I haven’t heard of any plans. I’m involved with only the merchandise created for Disneyland, Walt Disney World, Disney Cruise Line and Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa in Ko Olina, Hawai’i. I’d have to check with that development team. I still need to visit Disneyland Paris. I heard it’s beautiful!

Wow, this is great! I was lamenting the lack of fun Mansion gifts on my last visit to Disney World. I’ll be looking for these when I’m there this fall!

How in the world did I miss this post, Steven?! I have been soooo busy with work the past few weeks, but always look through the daily blogs for interesting tidbits, but must have glanced over this one! I found it by chance in the weekly recap! Thank you, weekly recap!! Ohhhhhh!!! The amazing items that are on this page!! My FAVORITE attraction IS the Haunted Mansion…and yes, I too, at ^ years old, rode through for the first time with my eyes closed!! But since then it has been a passion! Each visit to the Magic Kingdom includes 3 rides or more!! There goes more of the kids college fund!! Haha…kidding! Awesome job on these items, and thank you Steven for presenting them to us! I will be watching for them online soon! David

Great googly moogly. Which will I NOT buy! There’s been such a shortage of good merch since I discovered my love for the Mansion. I can’t describe how happy these goodies make me! Excepting of course the fact that I cannot buy them NOW.

I called Merchandise Services today, hoping to place a nice big order :) However, I found out that both the coasters and the hourglass are sold out, but pending restock. The photo frame is in stock. The throw and candelabra “should” be in anywhere from the end of the week to three weeks out, per the rep with whom I spoke.

We may get to WDW over Christmas break, but I’m not counting on these goodies to still be in the stores there. I guess I’ll be calling (stalking) the DelivEARS line weekly until June :)

Steven Miller on March 6th, 2013 at 2:40 pm

@Kim – Thank you for the update. The items have been pretty popular since their initial release. They aren’t limited edition so there will be additional orders arriving in the future. I love that you are as excited as I am about these things.

These are AMAZING! As an artist and incredible fan of the HM….I can’t wait!

Regrettably, the Disneyland Resort is currently out of everything except the picture frame. I’ve checked with them a few days in a row and nothing yet. Le Bat en Rouge in New Orleans Square said they only received 3 hourglasses to start with. What are the chances the Resort will be getting more stock? I really want the hourglass!

Ok so I bought the hourglass over the phone and its gorgeous… one problem… the sand doesn’t empty to the bottom…. anyone else have this problem?

Sam on March 17th, 2013 at 7:56 pm

Any chance there will be another 3 pack tombstone set released like the one from last year maybe for Halloween again?

Jennifer from IL on March 18th, 2013 at 9:13 am

Still waiting with baited breath for the merchandise to hit the website. Please hurry!!! We’re moving in May and would love to decorate the spare bedroom in the HM theme.

Mikk from PA on June 17th, 2013 at 11:30 am

Hi Steven,

Love the merchandise that Disney has come up with for the Haunted Mansion. Do you have any updates on when the Candelabras may come back in stock. I have been in touch with numerous people within Disney and no-one seems to be able to give me a straight answer. My fiancé and I doing a Halloween Wedding in October 2013 and would love to have 2 of these for our Wedding but don’t want to pay the eBay prices. Do you have any suggestions or information you can share?
