Disney Parks Celebrate ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’ with New Merchandise

posted on February 27th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

‘Oz The Great and Powerful’ Vinylmation Coming to Disney Parks

My son and I recently attended the Disney Parks Blog meet-up for “Oz The Great and Powerful” at Epcot. It was wonderful seeing several Disney Parks Blog readers and friends in person. We both enjoyed the film, along with some challenging trivia before the show (must study next time). My son was a big fan of the winged monkey Finley, while I was delighted to see Bruce Campbell make a brief cameo appearance in the film (he’s one of my favorite actors). With the motion picture arriving in theatres on March 8, Disney Theme Park Merchandise will be offering a variety of merchandise at Disney Parks. I peeked behind the curtain to see what new items are coming soon to stores.

Similar to other major film releases like the award-winning “Brave” or “Wreck-It Ralph,” the merchandise team partnered with the Disney Store to offer select “Oz The Great and Powerful” items at Disney Parks. You can currently find some of those items we will also carry on DisneyStore.com, including incredibly detailed dolls. We have created, however, a few items especially for Disney Parks.

I visited The Land of Oz Garden at Epcot the other morning to capture an image of four new Vinylmation sets coming to Disney Parks on March 8. Each set contains one 3-inch figure paired with one 1.5-inch Vinylmation, Jr. figure. Disney Design Group artist Ron Cohee created these figures. If you are in Florida on March 8, you can meet Ron from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at D Street in Downtown Disney West Side.

March 8 will also see the release of a commemorative opening day pin in select locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. This limited edition pin will have an edition size of 1,000.

The soft lines team will release four new shirts for women and one shirt (“Fragile by Feisty”) for girls. I thought the “Good” and “Evil” shirt was a fun design.

Finally, we will be releasing two D-Tech on Demand cases for the iPhone 5 and iPhone 4/4S.

I hope you enjoy the show!

Good Afternoon from Disney California Adventure Park

posted on February 26th, 2013 by Erin Glover, Social Media Director, Disneyland Resort

Good Afternoon from Carthay Circle at Disney California Adventure park

It’s a beautiful afternoon here in Carthay Circle at Disney California Adventure park. This is the kind of day when I like to grab a cup of coffee from Fiddler, Fifer & Practical Cafe, take a seat on the fountain in the middle of Carthay Circle, and watch people walk by. It’s a great spot for people-watching, because no matter where you are going at Disney California Adventure park, it seems all roads eventually lead through Carthay Circle.

What is your favorite people-watching spot at the Disneyland Resort? Let me know in the comments!

A Look Inside the Princess Half Marathon Meet-Up at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on February 26th, 2013 by Faron Kelley, Director, Marketing & Communications, Disney Sports

Last Friday morning started out better than most Fridays. It started with a 6 a.m. run through Epcot and Disney’s BoardWalk Inn area with close to 100 bloggers and social media aficionados at our Princess Half Marathon Meet-Up.

runDisney's Jeff Galloway and Tara Gidus at the Princess Half Marathon Meet-Up at Walt Disney World Resort

Once we knocked out our three miles, we headed into Biergarten Restaurant in the Germany Pavilion for some light food and some amazing words of inspiration from training guru Jeff Galloway, runDisney nutritionist Tara Gidus, decorated paralympian April Holmes, and the first female winner of “The Biggest Loser,” Ali Vincent. Actor Sean Astin and the folks from Senses – A Disney Spa were also on hand to make the morning complete.

As you can see from the photos, it was a great day. Now if I can just figure out how to do that every day.

Keep running.

Clopin’s Music Box Adds to Old-World Charm of Fantasy Faire at Disneyland Park

posted on February 26th, 2013 by Erin Glover, Social Media Director, Disneyland Resort

As we’ve learned already from Michel Den Dulk, Creative Director, Walt Disney Imagineering, the new Fantasy Faire at Disneyland park is designed to reflect the Gothic, Old-World feeling that guests experience in Fantasyland. In addition to the influence seen in the area’s architecture, Imagineers have imbued the entire area with the same Old-World charm through details like Clopin’s Music Box – an interactive element guests will discover at Fantasy Faire.

Clopin’s Music Box Adds to Old-World Charm of Fantasy Faire at Disneyland Park

“It’s really like a very big music box,” says Michel. “When guests peek inside the window, they will see a scene that has our main character, Clopin from Disney’s ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ inside.” By turning a crank on the front of the music box, guests will set the scene in motion to the tune of “Topsy Turvy.”

“The whole scene comes to life,” says Michel. “Clopin starts to dance, and Quasimodo will peak out of the bell tower on Notre Dame Cathedral … the sun will go down, and the moon will go up.”

Keep an eye on the Disney Parks Blog for more details on Fantasy Faire – and come see it for yourself when the new area opens at Disneyland park on March 12.

Raglan Road: Party Central for the Family-Friendly St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Across Pleasure Island

posted on February 26th, 2013 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer

The party starts March 8, so there’s plenty of time to celebrate the wearin’ of the green for St. Patrick’s Day – officially March 17, but at Raglan Road at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island, you’ve got two weekends: March 8-10 and March 14-17.
Celebrate St. Patrick's Day at Raglan Road at Downtown Disney Pleasure Island

This is the real deal – a true Irish pub with Dublin roots, 10 top Irish bands, Irish dancers on multiple stages and a satisfying selection of Irish and craft beers, Irish whiskey, cocktails and inventive food. Be authentic and order classics such as Shepherd’s Pie (with Chef Kevin Dundon’s twist), Irish Mist-glazed loin of bacon or Guinness and onion bangers on mash. And we’re happy with the fish and chips from Cooke’s of Dublin counter-service.

Be forewarned, the biggest celebration is March 16-17, when seating is first-come, first-served. (But you can book reservations for March 14 and 15 at 407-938-0300.)

The fun starts from 6-11 p.m. March 8-10 with performances at Raglan Road by The Willis Clan, a family of artists and musicians who merge their Irish roots with other music genres. Nova Celtic, with its own twist on popular Irish music, will appear on a nearby outdoor stage. Beginning March 14 and 15 from 6 p.m. until 1 a.m., and continuing March 16 and 17 from noon until 1 a.m., highlights of the celebration across Pleasure Island include:

  • Renowned Irish dancer and choreographer Ronan McCormack of the original Riverdance cast, leading Irish Dance Workshops Friday through Sunday
  • The Raglan Road Dancers, seven full-time champion dancers, performing daily
  • Distinguished Dublin-born multi-instrumentalist Declan Masterson, recent touring musical director of Riverdance, leading Irish Music Workshops
  • Ceili (kay-lee) traditional music and structured set-dancing event on Saturday, inviting guest participation
  • “The Electric Ceili,” Sunday evening, bringing together a host of Irish musicians and dancers
  • Performances by The Willis Clan, Nova Celtic, Girsa, Celtic Wave, Wyndbreakers, Three Dollar Band, Raglan Road house band Creel, Johnny & Justin, and Albannach, with a new approach to percussion and Celtic music
  • World-famous U2 tribute band Elevation, playing Saturday and Sunday
  • More than 50 musicians and dancers performing, plus face painting, stilt walkers and giveaways

Access to select entertainment on March 16 will include a $5 cover charge; on March 17, the cover is $10.

Nine New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise Items from Disney Parks

posted on February 26th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

My love for the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disney Parks grows more and more each year. Granted, my mother will probably remind me that I first rode the attraction with my eyes closed (I was seven at the time). Since then, my eyes have been opened to the awesomeness of this classic Disney attraction. The home and décor team at Disney Theme Park Merchandise recently created some new Disney Parks authentic merchandise inspired by the attraction’s amazing details. I caught up with Cody Reynolds, a creative manager at Disney Design Group, who shared some insight into these nine new items.

The Hourglass
“I’ve wanted to make an hourglass for years,” said Cody, who is an 18-year Disney cast member. “This 7 ½-inch-tall hourglass has gargoyles from the stretching room and the famous wallpaper design on the top. White sand is more commonly used in hourglasses, yet we chose purple sand to match the overall color palette. The hourglass keeps track of about an hour.”

Candelabra
My favorite item is the candelabra, which also features a gargoyle. Cody said the base was inspired by the paneling found in the queue just after the stretching room.

Frame
The frame holds 5”x 7” photographs and is reminiscent of the plaque from outside the attraction. Cody said the merchandise looks so authentic because the “development teams took lots of photos inside the attraction early one morning.”

Music Box
“We needed a music box because music is an important part to the attraction,” explained Cody. “This music box plays ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts,’ and draws inspiration from Madame Leota’s tombstone outside the attraction. Her epitaph is included on the inside lid.”

Coaster Set - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks

Coaster Set
The four-coaster set also uses some of the more recognizable epitaphs from the outside graveyard, including those of Madame Leota and Master Gracey.

Bat Bottle Stopper - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks

Bat Bottle Stopper
The bottle stopper resembles the bat stanchion topper from the queue.

Pillow - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks Throw - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks

Pillow and Throw
“For the pillow, we considered using the chair design from the endless hallway scene,” continued Cody. “Yet we selected a simple black pillow with the phrase ‘Rest in Peace.’ The back of the pillow and the throw include the famous wallpaper design.”

Candy Dish
The candy dish also uses the wallpaper motif, along with the iconic phrase “Room for One More,” which is a nod to the ghost host inviting guests to join the 999 happy haunts that live in the mansion.

Tarot Card Hangtags - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks Candy Dish - Part of New Chilling, Thrilling Haunted Mansion Merchandise from Disney Parks

Tarot Cards
Cody mentioned the tarot card-like hangtags found on the items were inspired by Madame Leota’s cards. The purple card contains verbiage that sounds like how Madame Leota would describe the new merchandise. The cards also contain nods to details found inside and outside the attraction.

These items will be found in select locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. We will also be carrying them via the Disney Parks online store at a future date. I’d love for all of these items to follow me home!

‘Oz The Great and Powerful’-Inspired Art Coming to Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort

posted on February 25th, 2013 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

For those who are anxiously awaiting the release of “Oz The Great and Powerful,” get in line – but it will have to be behind me! I have to say, I’m rather intrigued to see just how “Oz The Great and Powerful” came to be. On March 9, let WonderGround Gallery transport you to the wonderful Land of Oz, as we celebrate the release of film-inspired artwork created by none other than Joey Chou. If you’re curious as to why Joey’s name sounds familiar, you probably remember some of his recent releases which debuted around “Frankenweenie.”

Here’s your first look at the vibrant new pieces:

‘Oz The Great and Powerful’-Inspired Art Coming to the Disneyland Resort, Featuring Behind the Wizard's Curtain ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’-Inspired Art Coming to the Disneyland Resort, Featuring China Town ‘Oz The Great and Powerful’-Inspired Art Coming to the Disneyland Resort, Featuring The Arrival

I was fortunate to catch up with Joey to find out some of his reasoning behind these distinct and beautiful pieces, and here’s what he had to share. Naturally, we have to start with “The Arrival,” because that’s where it all begins. “I really wanted to capture that rare moment when Oscar first finds himself in the vibrant Land of Oz, as he sets out on a journey that will, no doubt, change the course of his life,” says Joey. “The next piece follows Oscar as he embarks on his travels, ultimately choosing the path to China Town, where he encounters an enchanting China Girl. The final piece takes you inside the Land of Oz amidst its charms. It is in itself great and powerful, so I wanted to create a piece that captured all of the film’s notable characters, as if they were to appear with a bit of magic, out of a hat, truly behind the wizard’s curtain. I’m really excited to see the response to this new film and can only hope that these pieces will inspire Disney fans to take that moment home with them.”

Joey will be on hand for a special appearance and signing on March 9 from 5–7 p.m. at WonderGround Gallery in the Downtown Disney District. These “Oz The Great and Powerful”-inspired pieces will only be available for a limited time, so don’t miss out. In addition, Joey will lend his artistic talents to our artist in residence program and will appear Saturday and Sunday evenings from 5–9 p.m. throughout the month of March at the same location.

If you wish that you could see these pieces in person, start making plans to visit and be sure to stop by and say hello.

Caption This: Finding Pluto at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on February 25th, 2013 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

I love looking at old Disney Parks photos, especially shots taken inside merchandise shops – they totally remind me of my childhood trips to Walt Disney World Resort and the toys I remember pleading my mom for.
“Can

Check out this vintage photo of Pluto plushes. The shot was taken at Downtown Disney (then the Lake Buena Vista Shopping Village) in the mid-1970s.

It sure looks like Pluto has a lot of friends (of all sizes). What do you think he has to say that will keep him as top dog?
