Disney Parks Blog Weekly Recap

posted on February 24th, 2013 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

This week, we shared a “first look” inside the new interactive queue being added to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom Park. In the video, Project Manager Wyatt Winter and Creative Designer Pete Carsillo show how the new queue builds on the attraction’s backstory of Barnabas T. Bullion, founder and president of Big Thunder Mining Company.

The storyline of the new area builds the attraction into something that takes guests deeper into the mining days of the Wild West. The queue will debut in a few weeks.

Rachel Booth Wins Her Second Disney’s Princess Half Marathon

posted on February 24th, 2013 by Faron Kelley, Director, Marketing & Communications, Disney Sports

Holding up homemade signs with words of encouragement, little Peyton and Hadley Booth were pretty excited to see their mom, Rachel, cross the finish line at Disney’s Princess Half Marathon this morning. As usual, it was easy for them to spot her among the 26,000 runners – she was the first person to cross the finish line again, winning her second straight Princess Half Marathon and besting her race record time from last year.

Rachel Booth Wins Her Second Disney’s Princess Half Marathon

The finish line celebration is becoming a Booth family tradition at runDisney events. Booth, 32, is now the only woman to win four runDisney titles – the Disneyland Half Marathon (2010 and 2011) and the Princess Half Marathon this year and last year). Heck, she might have been a five-time winner if she had entered the Disneyland Half Marathon last year.

5th Annual Disney’s Princess Half Marathon Begins at Walt Disney World Resort

Booth’s record-breaking victory was the headliner among a host of inspiring stories that unfolded throughout the weekend. There was the Delaware woman who completed all 13.1 miles of the half marathon despite having a brain tumor (it’s benign). And there were the two 78-year-old women who decided to run the half marathon. And there were a couple of celebrities such as Sean Astin (“Rudy,” “The Goonies” and “Lord of the Rings”) and Ali Vincent (former winner of “The Biggest Loser”).

They were all just a fraction of the many memories created during the three-day event. But my fondest memory will always be a 6-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl embracing their record-setting mommy at the finish line.

A Triple Crown in ‘King’ Mickey’s Court at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

posted on February 22nd, 2013 by Tony Morreale, Sports Public Relations Manager

It might be every day that royalty visits Magic Kingdom Park, but today ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex played host to quite an impressive court of its own.

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera, who became the first player in 45 years to win baseball’s celebrated Triple Crown, opened his 2013 spring training season at Disney, with a game against Disney’s home team, the Atlanta Braves.

Prior to the game, Cabrera met “King” Mickey Mouse and “Queen” Minnie Mouse, before stepping into the batting cage to start work on following up his monster 2012 season where he led the American League in home runs, batting average and runs batted in.

Of course, baseball fans have become accustomed to seeing their favorite Braves players at Disney, but spring training also offers the opportunity to see your favorite players from the Tigers, Yankees and Mets, among others clubs, at Champion Stadium.

Off to Never Land in Innoventions at Disneyland Park

posted on February 22nd, 2013 by Valarie Sukovaty, Disneyland Public Relations

Anyone who knows me knows I love Peter Pan. He was one of the first Disney characters I remember as a little girl. Who didn’t want to fly to Never Land and hang out with Peter, the Lost Boys and Tinker Bell? It’s hard to believe this timeless classic celebrated its 60th anniversary this month – a milestone that is being marked with the release of the “Peter Pan” Diamond Edition on Disney Blu-Ray and HD digital.
“Experience

Here at the Disneyland Resort, you can board a pirate ship and fly through Never Land on Peter Pan’s Flight in Fantasyland. You can also experience the magic of “Peter Pan” inside the Younger Son’s Room at the Innoventions Dream Home in Tomorrowland. The bed is shaped like a pirate ship and the cannon attached shoots virtual cannon balls through virtual clouds, just like the cannon on Captain Hook’s ship. The sail also shows clips from the film, “Peter Pan.” And keep your eyes open, because you may even spot Tinker Bell! Come see this magical room for yourself and celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Disney’s “Peter Pan” with us this weekend, here at Disneyland park.
