Celebrate Easter at the Walt Disney World Resort Through March 31

posted on March 29th, 2013 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

It’s shaping up to be a lovely Easter weekend here at Walt Disney World Resort. If you’re in town, here are a few different ways you can celebrate at our parks.

At Magic Kingdom Park, hop down Bunny Lane to visit Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny. (See the park’s Times Guide for an appearance schedule).

Celebrate Easter at the Walt Disney World Resort Through March 31

At Epcot, Easter Egg Hunts and Relays will take place at the Maze Garden in the United Kingdom Pavilion. The Easter Egg Hunts are open to guests ages 3-9, and an Easter Egg Relays are available for guests ages 8-12. A smaller area will be available for Egg Hunts for guests under the age of 3. Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny will also pop in to meet-and-greet guests periodically. (Again, see the park’s Times Guide for more).

Easter Egg Hunts and games will also take place in Future World at Epcot for children ages 3-9. To join, stop by the Future World East-er Garden (between Innoventions and Universe of Energy). Space is limited.

Also, don’t forget to enjoy the lovely springtime flowers, Flower Power concerts, and yummy dishes at the new food kiosks at the 2013 Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival.

A Look Back: 1958 Opening of the Grand Canyon Diorama at Disneyland Park

posted on March 29th, 2013 by George Savvas, Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort

“Opening

Fifty-five years ago this Sunday, a new route was discovered on the Disneyland Railroad: the Grand Canyon. The 306-foot-long diorama, which features the work of prolific scenic artist Delmer Yoakum, was described at the time as the “longest diorama in the world.”
“Opening

During the opening ceremony on March 31, 1958, Walt Disney was joined by his longtime friend Santa Fe Railroad Chairman, Fred Gurley — the namesake of our very own Engine No. 3, which began its service only three days earlier and was officially dedicated the same day.
“Opening

Just beyond the Tomorrowland Train Station, outside the tunnel that houses the diorama, the ceremony featured members of the Hopi tribe, including Chief Negangnewa, who performed a blessing.
“Opening

Among the rare photos from this special day, and one of my personal favorites, is a picture of Walt and Mr. Gurley chatting with the boy who participated in the ceremony. As you can see in this photo, Walt never seemed happier than when he was around the young or the young at heart, or whenever trains were involved!
“Opening

If you’re a fan of the Disneyland Railroad, or the Grand Canyon Diorama, my colleague, Paul Hiffmeyer, shared a really great photo he took of the diorama back in 2010 that you should also check out here.

Sweet and Cozy Hats Join ‘Year of the Ear’ on April 1 as Part of ‘Limited Time Magic’ at Disney Parks

posted on March 29th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

“Strawberry

This week, we continue our “Year of the Ear” celebration as part of “Limited Time Magic” with the release of two new hats. In recent years, the headwear team has designed some unique hats inspired by things found at Disney Parks. Some of my favorites include the hats that look like Disney characters or the hats inspired by pavilions from World Showcase at Epcot. On April 1, these new sweet and cozy hats join my favorites list. I asked Disney Design Group artist Mark Seppala how he created the strawberry ear hat.
“Strawberry

“I took photos of four different strawberries to design this hat,” explained Mark. “After merging the four photographs, I rendered the image to get the final art. The ear hat looks wonderful; it exceeded my expectations. Spring is a great time for enjoying strawberries, so we thought this hat would make a nice addition to the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival.”

My son and I love the chocolate, caramel-covered strawberries from Karamell-Küche in the Germany Pavilion at Epcot. I snuck a quick photo of him wearing this hat, which we’ll both need during our next strawberry eating excursion.

On April 1, look for this hat in select locations at Epcot, including the Festival Center located between Mission: SPACE and Universe of Energy.
“Cozy

My other new favorite hat was inspired by the Cozy Cone Motel in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park. I first enjoyed some of their delicious treats last summer during a vacation in California (churro bites for the win!).
“Cozy

Several Disney Design Group artists, including Brian Blackmore, Mark Seppala and Mike Posluszny, collaborated on the design. They used elements from the awesome neon sign like the motel logo and the “Zs.” I convinced my fellow Disney Parks Blog author Erin Catalano to let me photograph her wearing the hat (she was a good sport and now I owe her one).

Look for this hat starting April 1 at Sarge’s Surplus Hut in Disney California Adventure park.

‘Kingdom Keepers VI: Dark Passage’ Book Signing with Author Ridley Pearson at the Walt Disney World Resort

posted on March 29th, 2013 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

Don’t miss your chance to meet acclaimed author Ridley Pearson, as we set sail for adventure with the release of his newest book, Kingdom Keepers VI: Dark Passage, the much anticipated addition to the Kingdom Keepers saga. Ridley will be on hand for special appearances and signings at the following locations April 10-11, 2013.

Here’s a look at the cover as well as on what you can expect from this new book.
Kingdom Keepers VI: Dark Passage Book Signing with Author Ridley Pearson at the Walt Disney World Resort
The five Kingdom Keepers and their core friends have uncovered a startling truth: Maleficent and the Overtakers (Disney villains) are plotting a catastrophic event that could have repercussions far beyond the world of Disney. Aboard Disney Cruise Line’s inaugural passage through the new Panama Canal, the Keepers and their holograms uncover a puzzle hidden within the pages of a stolen journal. The point of that puzzle will reveal itself in the caves of Aruba, the zip lines of Costa Rica, and the jungles of Mexico. A destructive force, dormant for decades, is about to be unleashed. The five Kingdom Keepers are to be its first victims.

Something to keep in mind: Wristbands will be distributed to guests on the day of the signing with each purchase of Kingdom Keepers VI: Dark Passage by Ridley Pearson, allowing the wristband owner to get two books signed. A wristband from the appearance location is required to meet Ridley Pearson. A limited number of wristbands will be available the day of the signing. Once the wristbands have been distributed, the line to meet Ridley Pearson will close.

Disney Parks Featured in National Awards

posted on March 29th, 2013 by Charles Stovall, Public Relations Manager

We at the Disney Parks Blog believe in tooting our own horn, but from time to time we also let others toot our horn for us.

FamilyFun magazine, a trusted, go-to source for travel recommendations and family activities for more than 20 years, has recognized Disney Parks and Resorts on both sides of the United States as the very best in family travel for 2013.
“The

Here at the Walt Disney World Resort, Magic Kingdom Park has been recognized as one of the “Top 10 Overall Favorite Family Destinations” in the U.S. Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park were also recognized as part of “Top 10 Amusement Parks” is the country. And, in the same survey, Walt Disney World Resort hotels were named “Number One” in the category of “Top Family Resorts” in the country.

FamilyFun magazine’s 2013 survey recognized vacation destinations, attractions and resorts in six unique categories: Tourist Attractions; Tourist Towns; Nature Escapes; Museums, Zoos & Aquariums; Amusement Parks; and Family Resorts.

In California, the Disneyland Resort was also recognized. Both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks were also named among the “Top 10 Amusement Parks” in the U.S. FamilyFun conducted an extensive nationwide survey of 2,000 parents with children ages 3 to 12, asking them to rate 360 popular destinations on a scale of 1-100. For voting purposes, the country was divided into four geographic regions – West, Midwest, South and Northeast – and respondents provided feedback solely on their regions. High marks were awarded for affordability, accessibility and fun factor.

In addition to the FamilyFun magazine awards, Disney’s Polynesian Resort and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge created the first ever tie in the About.com 2013 Reader’s Choice Awards for Favorite Disney Resort Hotel.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Disney Parks After Dark: ‘World of Color’ at Disney California Adventure Park

posted on March 28th, 2013 by Paul Hiffmeyer, Chief Photographer for Public Relations, Disneyland Resort

After the sun sets at Disney California Adventure park, the night is filled with “World of Color” – the spectacular show of light, fire, color and water … lots of water. I have photographed “World of Color” numerous times and always enjoy it as much as the first time. I selected this first photo because of the reflection of Mickey’s Fun Wheel; I thought it was a little different than most of the other photos I’ve taken of the show.

I chose the two photos below because I love abstract photography, and I feel they fit into the category pretty well.

If you have not seen “World of Color,” you really should. If you haven’t photographed it, do so and let your imagination run wild. You may be surprised at the results.
