Disney Sponsors Panel to Give Students Sports Business Career Advice

posted on August 29th, 2013 by Bernadette Davis, Manager of External Communications at Walt Disney World

Hi, I’m Bernadette, Manager of External Communications at Walt Disney World and a fan of HBCU football. Ever since my college days, I’ve loved watching the bands, spending time with my family and cheering my favorite team.

For the past few months, I’ve been part of the team preparing for the 9th annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney, which gets underway this weekend. Televised on ESPN and tied to the start of college football season, the game will feature a gridiron battle between the Florida A&M Rattlers (MEAC) and Mississippi Valley State Devils (SWAC) at the Citrus Bowl in Downtown Orlando. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.

While the game is certainly at the center of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge, it really is more than just a game.

The four-day celebration includes a full weekend of activities, ranging from a Legends Reception that recognizes Historically Black College and University alumni to a Bands Showcase at Epcot. What I love most about the MEAC/SWAC Challenge is how it underscores the importance of diversity and higher education.

Today, Evans High School got the first taste of MEAC/SWAC activities with the ESPN 101 Career Panel. More than 900 students received career advice from prominent sports personalities and executives who had one clear message: “You don’t have to be ‘on’ the field to be successful ‘in’ the field of sports.”

Disney Sponsors Panel to Give Students Sports Business Career Advice

Panelists, including Jay Harris from ESPN and Latonya Johnson from Walt Disney World Resort shared their personal stories and advice on how students who are passionate about sports can pursue a career in sports business, journalism and broadcasting, among others.

Disney Cruise Line Alaska Voyage Report: Part 2

posted on August 29th, 2013 by Jonathan Frontado, Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line’s social media team is off on an Alaskan adventure this week, working hard to get answers to our fans most popular Alaska cruise questions. I think we’d all agree the view from their “office” is pretty amazing!

View of Tracy Arm Fjord From the Upper Deck

Yesterday, the Disney Wonder cruised through the glacial blue waters of Tracy Arm Fjord, where they enjoyed amazing scenery, Disney pals fitted for the frontier and even a BBQ up on deck! Take a look at this gallery of photos, which includes a unique look at the glacier from the captain’s point of view.

For the Alaska cruises, Disney homeports in Vancouver, and on Monday, the team was up bright and early to greet the ship as she sailed under the First Narrows Bridge.

Before boarding the Disney Wonder, they kicked off their adventures with a visit to Grouse Mountain, taking in the beautiful views of the city and landscape from North America’s largest aerial tramway…and getting an up-close look at the mountain’s resident grizzly bears!

Their next stop was the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which crosses 450 feet across a deep canyon, and then onto Stanley Park where they enjoyed great views of the city skyline.

Today the Disney Wonder is in Skagway, the first opportunity for cruisers to set foot on Alaskan soil. If you’ve been to Skagway, do you have fun recommendations for our team?

Disney Villains Invade ‘Celebrate the Magic’ at Magic Kingdom Park

posted on August 29th, 2013 by Shawn Slater, Communications Manager, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment

I can hardly believe it’s been a year since we shared with you the first details about “Celebrate the Magic,” the spectacular nighttime projection show at Magic Kingdom Park that transforms Cinderella Castle with unforgettable moments of Disney imagination and storytelling. Since that time, the show has been enhanced with the inclusion of special sequences celebrating winter holidays and summer vacations. Today, I’m thrilled to give you a sneak peek at the next seasonal update for “Celebrate the Magic,” just in time for Halloween.

Ursula from 'The Little Mermaid' in 'Celebrate the Magic' at Magic Kingdom Park Chernabog from Walt Disney's 'Fantasia' in 'Celebrate the Magic' at Magic Kingdom Park

This new segment of “Celebrate the Magic” places the Disney villains center stage. From the sea witch Ursula, lording over the poor unfortunate souls trapped in her underwater lair, to the demon Chernabog from Walt Disney’s “Fantasia,” spreading his wings across the face of Cinderella Castle, it promises to be a particularly dark and foreboding chapter.
Maleficent from 'Sleeping Beauty' in 'Celebrate the Magic' at Magic Kingdom Park

Things heat up as Maleficent casts a forest of thorns around the base of the castle, and then transforms into a wicked, fire-breathing dragon who threatens to destroy the very magic we’ve come to celebrate. Fear not, though. As with all great Disney stories, this one is sure to have a happy ending.

The new Disney villains sequence makes its debut this Sunday night, September 1, during performances of “Celebrate the Magic,” and will be part of the show for a limited time, through November 1, 2013.

Disneyland Half Marathon Kicks Off New Season For Runners

posted on August 29th, 2013 by Faron Kelley, Director of Non-Leisure Marketing and Sales Strategy

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for a Disney runner! I love Labor Day weekend, not only because it is when we host the Disneyland Half Marathon Weekend, but also because it means the beginning of a new season of runDisney events. While it has only been three short months since we crossed the finish line at Expedition Everest, it seems like a lifetime ago.

This coming season of races promises to be our best ever, starting with all the excitement we have in store for you at the Disneyland Resort in just a few days. Not only are we introducing the Disneyland 10K, but we are also premiering the Dumbo Double Dare for those of you who want to pack as much runDisney as possible into two days.

So, no matter if this is your first Disney race, or if you will be donning a Coast to Coast medal at the race end, thank you for joining us for this and every runDisney event.

Keep running.

How Will You Celebrate Halloween at Disney Parks?

posted on August 29th, 2013 by Jean Volante, Manager of Dream Making, Disney Floral & Gifts/DEG

Remember Halloween back in the good old days? Did you trick or treat with a variety of makeshift costumes (like I did), with sheets that could transform into a ghost costume, and carry trick-or-treat pillowcases? Years later we graduated to the “high-tech” plastic face masks – remember those? Not the most comfortable. But we had so much fun, dressing up to go on a trick-or-treat quest with friends and family. Now, years later, there’s so much more available.

This year, we’re taking Halloween to a whole new level – of course, at Disney Parks, we totally have to “scream” Halloween with creativity “ghoul”ore. In this post, I thought you’d like to read about some new experiences Disney Floral & Gifts is offering in Florida and California. Not coming to the parks this fall? Not to worry, I included a fun game in this post to play at home as well. Interested in learning more? Well, read on (If you dare! Muhahaha!).
Mickey’s Spooktacular Celebration by Disney Floral & Gifts

If you’re going to the Walt Disney World Resort this fall, check out Mickey’s Spooktacular Celebration. What’s included? Well, imagine walking up to your resort door after a full day in the parks to see a one-of-a-kind Halloween banner that lights up, then entering your resort room only to discover creepy hidden surprises, cobwebs, candy and more, prepared by Mickey and Minnie. There’s also a special message from Mickey and a “ghostly” activity waiting just for you. After you’ve discovered special Halloween haunts lurking in the room, little ones can snuggle up with their new Mickey and Minnie Mouse plush, and rest on their personalized Mickey Mouse pillowcase! They’ll be retelling this not-so-scary tale for years to come!

In-Room Halloween Celebrations by Disney Floral & Gifts Skellington Mickey’s Haunted Adventure by Disney Floral & Gifts

What’s available at the Disneyland Resort? What if you could experience Skellington Mickey’s Haunted Adventure in your resort room? What’s included? Well, legend has it that Jack Skellington and Mickey teamed up to create a one-of-a-kind surprise that “eeks” Halloween. After a full day in the parks, imagine walking up to your resort door to find a Halloween light-up banner – but that’s only the beginning. You’ll then enter your room to find an illuminated Jack Skellington head, a candy filled jack-o-lantern, a cobwebbed candelabra, a personalized note to the family, Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas”-themed playing cards and tiny tombstones scattered throughout your room. And once you’ve found all the lurking treasures and haunts, you can cozy up with your new Mickey plush and fleece blanket to complete one thrilling Halloween family memory.

Not staying in a Disney resort during Halloween time? No need to go batty! Here’s a spin on an old “boo” game for the neighborhood that’s sure to spark the haunting season for you. It’s called the “Neighborhood Goodie-Tag.” Here’s what to do:

Neighborhood Goodie-Tag

Make or decorate a goodie bag, then gather some Halloween-themed treasures like Halloween goodies and other small holiday surprises. Secretly deliver it to a friend with a sign that says “BOO!” The sign lets them know they’ve been “Boo’d” and they must create and pass another bundle of treasures on. Be sure to include a secret Halloween message in the bag explaining why they’re receiving the bundle and what to do next. Get creative with it: write a poem, create a song, you could even leave a picture message. The goal is to deliver the goodie bag to a friend or neighbor without them knowing it was you who left it. If the trend follows, you’ll have the whole neighborhood “booing” in no time, creating lots of fun and surprises.

Want to learn more about Skellington Mickey’s Haunted Adventure at Disneyland Resort? Call our Disneyland Dream Makers at 714-781-GIFT or visit

And whatever you choose to do this fall, make sure its “spooktacular”…. just like when we were kids.

posted on August 28th, 2013 by Kevin Rafferty, Jr., Communications Specialist, Disneyland Resort

Disneyland Resort Honors Medal of Honor Recipient Jay R. Vargas

During the daily flag retreat ceremony at Disneyland park earlier this week, the Disneyland Resort honored retired Marine Col. Jay R. Vargas, who received the Medal of Honor from President Nixon in 1970 for his actions during the Vietnam War. The Medal of Honor is the highest military honor a service member can achieve in the U.S. Armed Forces. There currently are only 79 living recipients.

Vargas and his family drove down Main Street, U.S.A., in the Main Street Fire Engine before being led by the Disneyland Band into Town Square, where the colors were retired in honor of all members of the military.

Vargas and his wife, Dottie, spent their honeymoon at the Disneyland Resort and were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary! Have you seen or been a part of the flag retreat ceremony lately?

Get Ready for Fall with Fiery Spirit from Beautifully Disney at Disney Parks

posted on August 28th, 2013 by Erin Catalano, Merchandise Communication Specialist, Walt Disney World Resort

Every year around this time I start to long for the fall season. There’s something special about the cooling temperatures, falling leaves and the rustic, rich colors. Timing its Disney Parks arrival perfectly for fall is the newest color collection from Beautifully Disney, Fiery Spirit.

Fiery Spirit from Beautifully Disney

The new line of colors is geared for fall, embracing vibrant jewel tones and fiery, rustic shades synonymous with the season. I spoke with the Merchandiser for Beautifully Disney, Lisa Bergman, to find out more about the newest collection scheduled to arrive on Saturday, August 31. “Fiery Spirit evokes the character of our strong-willed, brave, independent and fearless princesses: Jasmine, Merida, Mulan and Pocahontas,” explained Lisa. “This vibrant collection works with a wide variety of complexions and is the perfect palette this time of year.”

Fiery Spirit from Beautifully Disney

Fiery Spirit enhances the ever growing color assortment from Beautifully Disney adding four new richly colored nail lacquers and easy-glide, lightweight lip gloss, plus a warm, shimmering eye shadow palette to complete your look.

Fiery Spirit from Beautifully Disney

With every collection from Beautifully Disney, I discover new pigments and colors that belong in my beauty assortment. So what new discoveries did I find in Fiery Spirit? Tonal lip glosses like Whispering Wind – inspired by Pocahontas – and decadent nail lacquers such as Celtic Fire or Far East Embers that pair perfectly together to create a popping accent nail.

Fiery Spirit from Beautifully Disney

Fiery Sprit will make its debut in Disney Parks on Saturday, August 31 and can be discovered at Tren-D in Downtown Disney Marketplace at the Walt Disney World Resort and at Disney Vault 28 in Downtown Disney District at Disneyland Resort. As a special treat, Disney Vault 28 Guests will have the chance to experience the nail polish colors first hand at mini nail polish stations hosted by Disney Cosmetologist from 11a.m. – 1p.m. If you are unable to make it to Disney Parks, then be sure to keep an eye out at as this new collection will make its online debut in late September.
