The day of August 22, 1987, saw a milestone in the building of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa, as the resort’s 10,150-pound cupola was hoisted into place.

This Resort, inspired by Florida beach resorts of the 19th Century, began construction in 1986 and opened in the summer of 1988. Here’s a look at the Resort under construction in September of 1987.

I enjoyed my stay here in 2006. We had a view of Cinderella Castle and it was wonderful. However, the best part of the resort to me was the monorail.

Personally, I prefer the Beach Club since Epcot is my favorite park!

I love the vintage photos too. Keep them coming.

I had no idea how heavy that cupola would be! Neat photos showing the construction of this beautiful resort!

I forget how ‘new’ it is though. It seems like it has been around longer than that since it is such an iconic part of WDW.

Love the vintage photos that show things from ground up Is there somewhere they are archived to see? I have early books showing magic kingdom when it started construction
