Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to Reopen March 17 at Disneyland Park

posted on March 7th, 2014 by Erin Glover, Editorial Content Director, Disneyland Resort

Hold onto your hats and glasses, because I’ve got big news to share today about Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disneyland park. The wildest ride in the wilderness is reopening on March 17!

In addition to an upgraded track, restoration of the historic Rainbow Ridge Mining Town, repainting on portions of the mountain and updates to the ride vehicles, the refurbishment also includes some new surprises that guests should be on the lookout for when they ride again beginning March 17.

The ride looks very similar to what it was before… Looking forward to getting on this in April!! Also, the teaser sounds like maybe there are some NEW hidden Mickeys to be found??

Robert on March 7th, 2014 at 5:10 pm

Any word if there is going to be AP previews? Just our luck we happen to leave the 16th!

Erin Glover on March 7th, 2014 at 7:16 pm

Ryan on March 7th, 2014 at 5:12 pm

Will there be any opportunities for annual pass holders to ride before the official opening? We were planning a trip up there on Sunday

Wonderful! Too bad our trip is from March 10-15. Rats! Any chance of a soft opening?

Kevin on March 7th, 2014 at 6:24 pm

I hope the “green room” at the end is only gone in the vid because they didn’t have the water turned on. =)

shari from CA on March 7th, 2014 at 6:44 pm

Annual Passholder only soft opening March 13-16!!

Thomas on March 7th, 2014 at 7:00 pm

Did the “locomotives” get their second wheel back?

Dinah on March 7th, 2014 at 8:34 pm

YESSSSS!!!!!!!!!! Thank you, Erin!! Can’t wait to try it out. Big Thunder is my favorite ride.

Joel on March 7th, 2014 at 9:29 pm

Is it just me, or at 0:24 does it look like Jessie’s hat is on the right side?

Tanya on March 7th, 2014 at 9:59 pm

I was so nervous that my very favorite ride would be ruined as the Matterhorn was in my opinion (there is too little room now for the bumpiness of that ride if you are tall and I dream that one day the sleds will go back to the way they were), so I am very relieved and thrilled to see that it’s still basically the same old wonderful wildest ride in the wilderness!

Adam on March 7th, 2014 at 10:18 pm

Will the attraction at Disney World receive a similar update?

Debbie from MO on March 8th, 2014 at 12:21 am

Erin, That is the best news! I am planning a visit starting March 17th and was hoping it would be open in time for my visit. Thank you Disneyland. You made my birthday wish!! Now I wish that Indiana Jones ride was not closing the day I get there. darn!

Tyler on March 8th, 2014 at 2:12 am

3 weeks too late for me, I’ll just have to ride it a dozen times during the 24 hour party instead.

mike on March 8th, 2014 at 9:06 am

Hey Erin,

It’s like an “old friend” has returned! Now if we could only catch another “old friend”, the “Billy Hill” show at the Golden Horshoe after we exit Big Thunder life would be grand!!!

I was at the park yesterday, 7 March and I got some decent shots of the railroad running, I assume, castmembers through the ride. I wonder if there’s a way to post them for folks to see? Thanks..

Alisa on March 8th, 2014 at 10:58 pm

Hey Erin,

I’d love to see the blog do an interview with an Imagineer regarding the technical improvements of the ride and why. That’d be cool. Looks like the new track might create a smoother ride.

Gregory on March 9th, 2014 at 10:52 am

The calendar of March 17 still lists it as closed.

Ann on March 10th, 2014 at 12:01 pm

As a cast member here at DLR, Anaheim, I was privileged to ride the ride this weekend with my family during the cast special event to ride it before March 17th. What a wild ride!! We loved every nano-mini-moment!! and doing it 2 times before the cast line for the ride was way too long to wait for the 3rd time around.

Daniel Charles on March 10th, 2014 at 12:31 pm

It will be soooooooooooooooooooo gooooooooooooooooood to have Big Thunder back on-line!!

PS: GOING TO THE PARK TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Erin Glover on March 10th, 2014 at 1:52 pm

Have a great time!

Melissa on March 11th, 2014 at 6:38 pm

AP previews start wednesday 3/13/14!! just visited 3/10/14 and was informed by cast members that it will be open for AP members only starting 3/13/14. All others must wait until 3/17/14

Stephen on March 11th, 2014 at 8:58 pm

Yes Joel, it is Jessie’s hat on the right, going up the hill!

Dan on March 12th, 2014 at 10:10 am

Great to have Big Thunder back on line but, I was hoping, with the amount of time it was down, the track was going to be more like big thunder in Disney World.

Leslie on March 12th, 2014 at 3:41 pm

Yesss!!!!!! I have been waiting for this day to come. I am sooo excited to ride on it!

John on March 15th, 2014 at 5:12 pm

So Glad its back! It has always been a favorite. Rode it on Thursday for the pass holder preview event. It is indeed better than ever!

adam on March 24th, 2014 at 6:43 am

can’t wait to get back to “the happiest place on earth” to check out the newly updated BTMRR. I rode Splash Mountain a few weeks ago after the refurb, and considering the amazing job that was done on that, I have high hopes for “the wildest ride in the wilderness.”
