The next destination on our Mediterranean voyages I want to tell you about is Crete, the largest island in Greece. The port is in the capital city of Heraklion, where you’ll be surrounded by lively Greek culture and spectacular island scenery.

A must-see during your visit is the Minoan palace of Knossos, located just a few miles from Heraklion. Originally built around 1900 BC, this sacred settlement showcases the region’s Minoan history. The archeological site includes ruins of a small palace, royal villa and many well-preserved fresco-covered buildings.

Knossos Palace Ruins and Arolithos Village with Family Activity – This tour combines a tour of the ancient civilization with a visit to Arolithos, the re-created traditional Cretan village built on the side of a mountain. Here your family can explore the Museum of Agricultural History and Traditional Art, followed by the chance to create your very own kompoloi or “worry beads.” During the craft, you’ll learn the history of the beads, a traditional tool used in Greek culture for relaxation, prayer, rituals and celebration, and enjoy samples of freshly made spinach and cheese pies.

Knossos Palace Ruins and Thalassocosmos Aquarium Behind the “Seas” – Families will love this excursion, which combines a tour of the Knossos Palace Ruins with a visit to the Thalassocosmos Aquarium. Located in Gournes Village, this aquarium houses 2,500 marine species, focusing on the Mediterranean marine life. Your family will get a unique, behind-the-scenes tour and learn about the work involved in caring for all the underwater residents of the aquarium.

Isla Beach Club and Knossos Archaeological Site – If you’re craving some sunshine and views of the turquoise water, this Port Adventure is perfect for your family. Following your tour at Knossos, you’ll head to Gouves Village for lounging by the Cretan Sea. A reserved sunbed with an umbrella, along with a soft drink or frappe coffee, is included and makes for a very refreshing afternoon!
