VIDEO: Top Souvenirs for Your Next Walt Disney World Vacation

posted on April 18th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

I’ve been visiting Walt Disney World Resort for more than 30 years. I’ve spent more than half of that time working (or playing as I like to say) as a Disney cast member. I’m often asked by friends and family to help with planning vacations to Disney Parks. One topic that regularly comes up during conversations is around merchandise – What are the must-have items I should get during my visit? To help answer that question, I visited Magic Kingdom Park to highlight some of my favorite merchandise items in this short video.

The good news is that you can find many of the items I mentioned in the video on our Disney Parks online store in the “Vacation FUNdamentals” section.

Now it’s your turn. What are your must-have items when visiting Walt Disney World Resort? Please share in the “Comments” below.

That was a great video and had some truly great advice, a must have for my own trips was always the music. Being able to the get CDs for things like IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth and Fantasmic was a truly gratifying experience and it’s always nice to go back and listen to. Especially since most of the park music is only available when you’re there and not anywhere else.

@Nick – Thank you for the comment. I agree with you – the music from Disney Parks is outstanding! There were so many family trips where I would try recording the music using my giant VHS camera (the kind that sat on your shoulder). Such good memories :)

I always have to purchase and souvenir drink mugs or popcorn buckets I come across. I usually also get a Christmas ornament :)

We always get the magnet for the year of our visit. And a hand-cut silhouette of our daughter from the artist on Main St. in the Magic Kingdom. My parents always got them of my sister and me on our family trips. Now we are continuing the tradition with our daughter!

@Danielle – That’s such a great tradition! Thank you for sharing.

We always get a Christmas ornament that reminds us of our trip. Some have been ornaments showing the resort we stayed at on that trip, and others have just been of favorite characters. They always make me smile and bring back great memories when we put up our trees each year. I also always get something that I know I’ll get a lot of use out of and that will make me smile each time I see it. Often that’s a neat shirt, but my favorite options are the Disney Dooney & Burke purses. Definitely a splurge and rare treat, but I use it every day and definitely get my money’s worth. And they last forever.

@Misty – Those are great ideas! I love the Christmas ornaments (just wait until you see some new ones this year :) And look for some new Dooney & Bourke items coming soon.

Two words, DREAM JOB!!! Now that I’ve said that…my go to purchases are mugs, Christmas decor, kitchen and dinnerware, pins, frames and always something Lightning Mcqueen for my son. Although, I’m pretty much up to buy anything! Great video!

I absolutely ‘have’ to pick up an exclusive CD with the latest park music on it. I tend to play it repeatedly until my next visit.

I do the same thing when logging onto youTube. I listen to the background park music loops while I’m checking e-mails, doing work, etc..and it puts me in a magical mood.

I also love searching for items relating to very obscure characters and buy them as ‘soon as’ I find them! My favorite is a magnet with the penguins from “Mary Poppins” that says “Poppins & Company Catering”. I love it! Too often the park is overrun by Princesses and the Fab Five, so it’s awesome to find ‘lesser’ characters on magnets, large coffee mugs, keychains, plush, etc.

I’m heading to Magic Kingdom for the 24 hour Event on May 23rd and would ‘especially’ love to find characters that we used to sell at the Disney Store back in the early to mid 90s (“Fantasia”, “Little Mermaid”, “Pocahontas”, “Hunchback of Notre Dame” (the gargoyles!!), “Hercules” (The Muses & Philocetes especially), etc. as well as classics like “Mary Poppins”, “Pete’s Dragon” and “Newsies”.

@Ryan – Right on! The official Disney Parks albums are great. I think I own every one (including the ones that were released on vinyl). I hope to see you at the Rock Your Disney Side event!

Hi Steven I know this is a little off topic, but when are they going to release the Star Wars Weekends 2014 autographing character list please?
It’s less then a month away now and it is leaving it way late to book our holiday so we get to see our favorites. In past years it was release a long time before now with plenty of time to organise and book our holiday

Steven Miller on April 22nd, 2014 at 9:36 am

@Crystal – That’s a great question. I’m unsure if/when such a list would be published. I’d have to ask my partners since I’m not really involved with Entertainment. If I hear an update, I will share.

The main things are Christmas ornaments. We also have to get a shirt and some kind of collectible for my wife. Almost always Tinkerbell.

I always buy a different hat when I visit Disney with my family! It’s a must for me! Oh and jewelry! I’m going to attend “Show your Disney Side” and it’s going to be my first time with “pin trading”. I’m a little nervous though! I don’t know what to expect! Such awesome tips! Thank you :)

Steven Miller on April 22nd, 2014 at 9:37 am

@Florencia – I hope you have a wonderful trip! As for pin trading, collect what you like. I have encouraged Guests to pick a theme which makes it easy to build a collection.

I love retro merchandise, so I am always on the lookout for something new in that area, be it a shirt, a pin, or a mug. Always get a pin for every attraction I experience for the first time and characters I meet for the first time. Anything new featuring Donald Duck is at the top of my list! He is my favorite. I also love the character sketches the art stores sell. A scarf, a couple Christmas ornaments, a figurine or snowglobe, a logo baseball, and resort specific merchandise are must-haves for me too.

It is easier to list what I don’t buy than my must-haves, ha!

Steven Miller on April 22nd, 2014 at 9:38 am

@Kelly – Yes!! I too love the retro-inspired merchandise. It’s good to meet another Donald Duck fan! Can’t believe he will celebrate 80 years this June! :)

Where can the new Mr. Toad stand be found? It was featured with other new home items. It looks like it’s white ceramic or another similar material. Thank you

Steven Miller on May 13th, 2014 at 2:17 pm

@Chad – That particular item seen in this article – http://disneyparks.disney.go.com/blog/2014/03/spotlight-on-disney-centerpiece-coming-to-marketplace-co-op-at-downtown-disney-marketplace-in-2014/ – is coming soon to the Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort.

You may be able to locate it in select locations at Disneyland Resort including Gag Factory and China Closet in Disneyland park, Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure Park, or World of Disney in Downtown Disney District. The item number is 400008215633.
