Adventures by Disney Nashville Long Weekend Really is Music to Your Ears

posted on September 2nd, 2015 by Terry Brinkoetter, Public Relations Director

You don’t have to be a fan of the critically acclaimed ABC TV series “Nashville” to know that the city pulses with excitement. I recently joined a fun group on the new Adventures by Disney Nashville Long Weekend. Like the city, this four-day, three-night adventure way exceeded expectations. And you’d think we were Nashville stars, with all the insider access to so many places, the amazing food and totally VIP treatment.

Not a country music fan? Not a problem.

Nashville deserves its moniker “Music City U.S.A.,” but it’s also called the “Athens of the South” and “Nash Vegas” for good reason. Steeped in art, architecture and culture, Nashville also knows how to kick back and have a good time. There was something for everyone in our group of families, young adults, singles and tweens.

Music literally creates a soundtrack for this Adventures by Disney getaway. There’s a private tour of the famed RCA Studio B where a long list of music greats recorded. It was like stepping back in time, and Adventures by Disney groups even get to record a track of a hit song.

We turned over performing to the professionals for the rest of the adventure. That included a private lunch at The Bluebird Café. Famous long before its appearance on the Nashville TV show, this is where some of the city’s hottest stars got their big breaks. People still line up for a chance to get in and see performances here, so we were thrilled that our private visit included performances by some unbelievably talented, warm and funny artists.

Nashville doesn’t just appeal to different musical tastes either. Adventures by Disney showcases a culinary scene that’s every bit as varied and exciting. In addition to checking out premier Nashville restaurants, we made our own biscuits as part of a private evening and dinner at The Hermitage, President Andrew Jackson’s lovingly preserved former home. And we celebrated our final night together with dinner backstage at the Grand Ole Opry before being escorted to VIP seats for the show.

There’s so much more to the Nashville Long Weekend, and that included one big downside – having to say goodbye to new friends we’d met and our Adventure Guides – Kelly and Paola. Not only did Kelley and Paola anticipate questions and needs the group had, they kept us laughing and entertained all four days. They were the melody that held this Adventure by Disney song together.

Keep an eye out for my next report, from the Adventures by Disney Ireland vacation!

Top 9 Disney Parks Recipes for Fall

posted on September 2nd, 2015 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer

While we’re still sweltering in Florida, temperatures are beginning to cool across the U.S., with thoughts of fall – apples and pumpkins, gingerbread and comforting bowls of soup.

So we’re getting ready and rounded up nine of your favorite recipes that we’ve posted on the Disney Parks Blog. Here they are, all in one spot, so take your pick: a hot, crisp gingerbread beignet from Disneyland park, perhaps? Or maybe something fancy like Chef Scott Hunnel’s pan-seared sablefish from Victoria & Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at Walt Disney World Resort.

In no particular order, the Top 9:

  1. Apple Crisp from Napa Rose, Disneyland Resort. What’s not to love about warm apples with splash of apple brandy, and a topping of sugar, oats, pecans and coconut? Bring on the vanilla ice cream.

Gingerbread Beignets from Café Orleans at Disneyland Park

  1. Gingerbread Beignets from Café Orleans, Disneyland park. Frying makes everything better — gingerbread never tasted this good.

Pumpkin Mousse with Ocean Spray Craisins and Orange Sauce at Epcot International Food & Wine Festival

  1. Pumpkin Mousse from Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. Forget pumpkin pie. Impress your guests with layers of pumpkin, streusel and apricot-orange sauce.

Pumpkin Beignets From Club 33 at Disneyland Park

  1. Pumpkin Beignets from Club 33, Disneyland park. We love pumpkin. We love beignets. Add a warm maple glaze and watch them disappear.

  1. Hearty Pozole Soup, Paradise Garden Grill, Disney California Adventure park. “Pozole” is just a fancy word for old-fashioned hominy, giving substance to this tomato broth along with pork. We love the crunchy toppings, too: radishes, lime, cilantro and more.

  1. Harvest Salad, Carthay Circle Restaurant, Disney California Adventure park. This is really a fancy dinner in a bowl, with duck and caramelized apples (perfect pairing) with the crunch of fresh greens. This one takes a little time, but it’s worth it.

  1. Pumpkin Twists from Maurice’s Treats, Disneyland park. Our readers love pumpkin, and this baked treat is made with frozen puff pastry and pureed pumpkin. Easier than it looks.

  1. Pumpkin Muffins. Breakfast or dessert, you decide. With pumpkin, golden raisins and a crunchy streusel topping, we could go either way. Or have for both breakfast and dessert.

  1. Pan-Seared Sablefish, Victoria & Albert’s, Walt Disney World Resort. If you’re p for a kitchen challenge, this fine dish from Chef Scott Hunnel will elicit praise. If you can’t find sablefish, Chilean sea bass work well. Bon appétit!

Wildlife Wednesday: Meet Malosi at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

posted on September 2nd, 2015 by Jackie Ogden, Ph.D., Vice President, Animals, Science and Environment, Disney Parks

We want to introduce you to one of the tigers you may see along the winding trails of Maharajah Jungle Trek—Meet Malosi!

maimaiyt3812221

Malosi is our newest tiger at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. While Malosi, a male Sumatran tiger, gets used to his new habitat, he may be exploring both onstage and backstage areas on Maharajah Jungle Trek. You may see this curious cat cooling off in the water or resting in the sun.

As you may remember when we introduced you to Sohni last year, Sumatran tigers are the smallest subspecies of tiger and are found only on the small island in Indonesia where this tiger gets its name. Males like Malosi stretch 6.5-to-nearly-8-feet long, and typically weigh only between 220 and 310 pounds. While this may seem like a big cat, the Sumatran tiger’s cousin, the Siberian tiger (or Amur tiger, as they are also known), weighs between 400 and 600 pounds!

When you visit Malosi, Sohni and the other tigers here, keep these fun facts in mind:

  • Malosi and other tigers can see about as well as humans during the day, but when the sun goes down, their vision is six times more powerful than ours.
  • Can you wiggle your ears? Tigers sure can. Their ears turn independently of each other and in an arc up to 180 degrees, allowing them to pick up sounds from all different directions.
  • You may know tigers are pretty good swimmers despite the reputation of their domesticated cousins—the house cat. Tigers spend a lot of time in the water and even use water as a tool in hunting. They have been seen fishing in rivers and lakes.

Human impact has dramatically decreased Sumatran tiger numbers in the wild. They are critically endangered, with as few as 500 tigers left in the wild. Conservation organizations like those supported by the Disney Conservation Fund are working hard to make a difference. You can help tigers by donating to the Disney Conservation Fund at select merchandise and food and beverage locations on your next visit and don’t forget to say “hi” to our feline friends on Maharajah Jungle Trek.
