MyMagic+: Video Captures Your Twilight Zone Tower of Terror Drop at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on August 13th, 2014 by Kelly Glassburn, Manager of Marketing & Communications, Disney’s PhotoPass Service

Why is it that the things that scare us the most are often the experiences we are drawn to again and again? I hate creepy crawlies, but when asked if I want to hold something like a giant tarantula … I always say yes! Or, when presented with the opportunity to drop 13 stories when you are really afraid of heights … you buckle up, close your eyes, and hope that you don’t embarrass yourself in front of a group of fellow thrill seekers.

Better yet, how many times have you wished to have those scary (but exhilarating) moments captured on video? The look, the screams, the panic and ultimately the relief on our faces when the moment is over – what if you could relive that experience over and over again with video? How cool would that be?

Well, guess what? Disney PhotoPass Service has introduced some awesome new technology, which will enable guests with a MagicBand and an active Memory Maker entitlement who ride The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror to receive a video memento of their 13-story drop! The video is automatically associated to your My Disney Experience account, and any linked Family & Friends and Managed guests on your account will also be able to view and share the video. Check it out!

So, get ready for a whole new level of memorable thrills if you have a MagicBand and Memory Maker! And if you are that guy, or that girl, who screams like a banshee on this attraction, we’ll let you relive that magical memory again, and again, and again.

PhotoPass Photographers Make Picture Perfect Memories Happen at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on February 28th, 2012 by Kelly Glassburn, Manager of Marketing & Communications, Disney’s PhotoPass Service

Park Goers Pose for Disney PhotoPass Photographers at Walt Disney World Resort

Being part of a team that snaps an average of 300,000 photos a day, you would think there isn’t any time left to actually be a part of those memories – but that’s not the case for Disney PhotoPass photographers. Doug Fey, guest service manager for Disney PhotoPass, was recently reminded that taking photos is just a small part of the magic created by photographers every day.

While waiting in line to pay for his groceries, Doug was approached by a gentleman who asked, “Do you work with PhotoPass?” Doug remembered taking a photo with their camera and explaining PhotoPass, pointing to the next photographer up Main Street, U.S.A. and proclaiming, “That’s the best photographer at Walt Disney World Resort right there!” The gentleman, whose son has Down syndrome, quickly began telling Doug about all the poses the photographers had his son make while his son was in the background proudly recreating them. Doug started explaining that photographers are trained to do this, but he was cut off by the father who said, “You don’t understand, my son is not like that. He’s an introvert. It takes a week to get him to be comfortable with a relative and your photographers drew him out, making him feel so special that all he wanted to do was pose for the camera all day.”

Doug was touched by this encounter and the following morning thanked his team of photographers. I would like to thank Disney PhotoPass photographers too for making memories like this happen.

Wounded Veteran Walks with American Flag at Magic Kingdom Park

posted on January 6th, 2012 by Kelly Glassburn, Manager of Marketing & Communications, Disney’s PhotoPass Service

“Wounded

In a year of celebrating Memories at Disney Parks, some just have a way of stopping your heart. Disney’s PhotoPass photographers recently captured this photo at the daily Flag Retreat ceremony at Magic Kingdom Park, of wounded veteran and two-time Purple Heart recipient, Army Sgt. Cesar Sanchez from Miami, Fla. Although still recovering from his injuries overseas, Sgt. Sanchez insisted on leaving his electric wheelchair to walk the flag down Main Street, U.S.A., saying “If it’s for the colors, I’ll walk.” Cast members who assisted with the ceremony that day were stunned by his courage and resolve to honor the Stars and Stripes.

Talking with Sgt. Sanchez was one of the most moving conversations I’ve ever experienced.

Sgt. Sanchez shared that he was injured while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009, serving in an elite Army company responsible for finding and clearing improvised explosive devices. He was injured during one such mission, but calmly reminded me that it was his job to do so. Stunned silence was really all I could offer in return and a meager, “thank you” squeaked out between a few tears, hiccups and deep breaths.

I have communicated several times with Sgt. Sanchez, who asked that I work with his wife Farrah to share his story with Disney Parks Blog readers. She explained he almost died in the explosion and is still undergoing physical therapy for his injuries. Sgt. Sanchez received both Purple Hearts on that mission because he insisted on doing the sweep first, before leading the rest of his team into the danger zone. It was this selfless act that resulted in the explosion of only the vehicle that Sgt. Sanchez was traveling in, saving countless members of his team.

Farrah wanted to add: “Please tell everyone how proud my husband and I were to join the Army and serve our country. We love our jobs! I also want everyone to know how proud (daughter) Emily and I are of Cesar and how very much we love him still.” Again, I was rendered speechless.

So remember the next time you see a photo that moves you like this one did for us, that there is always a story to be told! We salute Sgt. Sanchez , his wife Farrah and all of the other members of the United States Armed Services, for answering the call of duty, and for their dedication and sacrifice to our country.

The parks offer a great backdrop for your “official holiday family photo,” but don’t forget the power of the candid moments. Some of our favorite family photos (much to my mother’s chagrin) are not the ones perfectly posed but rather those that really capture the essence of the season.

Here are just a few of our recent favorites, taken by our Disney’s PhotoPass photographers:

Magical PhotoPass Memories at Disney Parks

posted on January 25th, 2011 by Kelly Glassburn, Manager of Marketing & Communications, Disney’s PhotoPass Service

Do you remember your first Disney Parks memory? I do! I was 6 years old and it was our first family vacation to Magic Kingdom Park, a welcome escape from the winter wonderland of my hometown in Annapolis, Maryland. I remember how huge Cinderella Castle appeared as I stood on Main Street, U.S.A., and had my photo taken. I remember my sides hurting from laughing too hard on the Mad Tea Party as my two brothers spun us around, and around again. And I still have my first Mickey Mouse plush from that vacation – the one I’m so proudly holding up in the photo below.

Now, almost 40 years later, I’m still making Disney memories, only this time, I’m on the other side helping to create the magic! As Manager of Marketing & Communications for Disney’s PhotoPass Service, I have the privilege of working with a team that does nothing but capture memories, all day and every day. And this year, our Cast of Photographers is making your Disney Parks memories even more special during the “Let the Memories Begin” campaign. Every day in the Magic Kingdom and Disneyland park, PhotoPass Photographers will be looking to capture some of your most special Disney Parks memories to be featured in our newest show, “The Magic, the Memories and You.”

Guest Photos Projected on Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom as Part of Disney Parks' 'Let The Memories Begin' Campaign

That’s right – more than 500 daily PhotoPass photos will be featured in this larger-than-life experience on Cinderella Castle at the Magic Kingdom and “it’s a small world” at Disneyland park. It’s a celebration of your moments – heroic and happy, adventurous and romantic, captured by our squad of memory makers.

So the next time you visit, be sure to find a PhotoPass Photographer and capture your special Disney memory. And then one day, it will be you digging through that musty old box of photos, remembering an enchanted castle, a side-splitting adventure, and a magical mouse called Mickey.
