Did you know The Walt Disney Company maintains 200 horses worldwide at the Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and the Disneyland Resort in Paris? These horses provide opportunities for guests to ride in horse-drawn street cars, arrive at their wedding in Cinderella’s Carriage, delight in a child’s first pony ride, watch the Wild West come to life or enjoy a quiet wagon, carriage or trail ride.
On average, our horses live with us at Disney for about 7-10 years. Their time as a member of the Disney team is based on many factors including their age when they arrive, their ability to acclimate to their surroundings and their overall health. Just like other animals at the Disney Parks, horses receive top-notch care while they are a member of our family, but did you ever wonder what life for a horse is like after Disney?
It gives me great pride to share that life after Disney is just as green on the other side of the fence. For decades, the Disney Equine Adoption Program has paired our retired horses with new adoptive families. This program has proven that our horses and ponies have plenty of magic to share even after their Disney career.
In order to identify the best potential adoptive families, the Disney Equine Adoption Program has various guidelines and policies in place. These guidelines help ensure we find people who are committed to a lifetime of care and enjoyment with our animals.

Tri-Circle-D Ranch at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is one of the best-kept secrets at Walt Disney World Resort (until now!). At the Draft Horse Barn, one of four stable areas and just a short walk from Pioneer Hall, guests can see a variety of horse breeds and learn more about the many horses in Disney history. While the Draft Horse Barn houses up to 30 horses, ranch cast members care for 80-90 horses at any one time! These horses can be seen in various locations throughout Walt Disney World Resort and the local community. Did you know horses from Tri-Circle-D Ranch are featured in Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom Park? In addition, local parades like the Citrus Bowl and the Christmas parade in the city of Winter Park, Fla. also feature Tri-Circle-D Ranch horses.
Just like we would prepare for a special event or outing, a great deal of time is spent preparing the horses for these fun events. The horse below, Khan, is getting a morning bath and then had his mane hair braided to give it a nice fluffy look.
Most recently, the horses from Tri-Circle-D co-starred in the Disney Parks Frozen Christmas Celebration!
Don’t forget to visit Tri-Circle-D Ranch during your next visit to Walt Disney World Resort. All guests are welcome to enjoy the outdoor activities including pony rides for the younger travelers and trail rides for the older kids and “kids at heart”! Old-fashioned, horse-drawn wagon, carriage and sleigh rides also allow relaxing time spent in the great outdoors. Call 407-WDW-PLAY to schedule advanced reservations. If you’re feeling spontaneous, call 407-824-2832 for same day reservations.
Happy Holidays and we hope to see you soon!
Outside the snow isn’t falling, but friends are calling, “Yoo hoo… Now is the time to make your reservations!”
You may think it’s too early, but now is a great time to book your holiday sleigh ride at the Fort Wilderness Resort and Campground!
Holiday sleigh rides begin on November 28th and run nightly through December 30th. Each sleigh holds up to 4 adults (or two adults and 3 children). The 25-minute sleigh ride is $70 per sleigh and includes 1 collector’s pin per reservation.
As we await the holiday season, the Tri-Circle-D Ranch offers plenty of year round activities to keep you busy. Guests over nine years old can enjoy a 45-minute horseback ride through Florida’s natural wilderness, and for the younger riders, pony rides are a great introduction to our 4-legged equine friends!
If you just can’t wait until the holiday season to relax, carriage rides are offered throughout the year at Disney’s Fort Wilderness and Campground and Port Orleans Resort!
Book your favorite equestrian activity by calling 407-WDW-Play!
