Look Ahead to New Merchandise Coming to Disney Parks Later in 2015

posted on June 18th, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

As summer begins at Disney Parks, here is a sneak preview of items coming later this year. This is one of my favorite articles to write as I get to share some awesome things currently in development.

NPM758961

Time For MagicSliders
One of the more popularly requested accessories for MagicBands at Walt Disney World Resort is a watch. I’m happy to report there will be two MagicSlider timepieces coming this summer – a Minnie Mouse analog timepiece and one with a digital display.

NPM758962

Disney Pins From Regions Beyond
Memento Mori, the Haunted Mansion-themed shop located in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom Park, inspired two open edition pins coming late summer. One pin resembles the brooch that female cast members wear in the location, while the other looks like a sign found outside the shop. You can see both of those items in this previous article.

NPM758963

Cogsworth and Chef Figment
Cogsworth may be one of my favorite characters from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” I was happy to see there will be a medium-sized figurine coming this September. This figurine is the companion piece to the Lumiere figurine we released in 2013. The best part – Cogsworth’s face is a working clock!

Also arriving this fall is a new 12-inch Figment plush created especially for the 20th Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. My favorite festival of the year returns to Walt Disney World Resort from September 25 through November 16.

NPM758964

Villainous T-Shirts
This fall, Chernabog from Walt Disney’s “Fantasia” and Hades from Disney’s “Hercules” will be featured on new Disney Villain T-shirts. I love this artwork created by Disney Design Group artist Dave Keefer.

NPM758965

Disney Theme Park Holiday Ornaments
This year, we will release ornaments featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse dressed in attire representing different Disney Theme Parks. It’s probably no surprise that I adore the Epcot ornament especially since Mickey and Minnie are wearing their spacesuits from the 1980s.

Look for these and other items coming to select merchandise locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort.

Which item is your favorite? Please share in the comments below.

Spotlight on Tees Coming to the Disney Parks Online Store in June 2015

posted on June 16th, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

01_ParksBlog_JuneShirts_TripleR

To kick off the summer season at Disney Parks, we are releasing a few tee-shirts on our Disney Parks online store that I think fans will love. These limited release tees will only be offered online at DisneyStore.com/ParkEvents. All shirts will be offered for adults, women and youth. Please allow 3-5 weeks for delivery.

04_ParksBlog_JuneShirts_Jungle

June 17-23
To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Disneyland Resort, we are launching a series of online tees that salute original Disneyland park attractions. The first tee celebrates the world famous Jungle Cruise attraction. In addition to the shirt, poster artwork will also be available during this sale.

MCTV-C-29.tif

June 22-28
I’m particularly excited for the Triple R Ranch tee shirt, which was inspired by “The Adventures of Spin and Marty” from the 1955-56 season of the “Mickey Mouse Club.” Disney Design Group artist Casey Jones worked with the Walt Disney Archives to get photo reference of the summer camp shirts used in the show. You may also recognize the shirt as something Andy wore in Disney-Pixar’s “Toy Story 2” (I tried recreating a shot from that animated feature above).

June 29-July 5
The final shirt for June features the Harmony Barber Shop from Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom Park. This location opened in 1975 and is a great place to get a first haircut as seen in this video article. This shirt will be online from June 29 through July 5.

Dreamfinder and Figment Will Return in New Disney Kingdoms Comic Series This Fall

posted on June 15th, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

01_ParksBlog_Figment2_Cover

As a long time fan of Figment, I’m thrilled to announce that Dreamfinder and Figment will return this fall in an all-new Disney Kingdoms comic series titled “FIGMENT 2.” This new series is a sequel to the fan-favorite, sell-out Figment miniseries based on the beloved Journey Into Imagination attraction in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort.

02_ParksBlog_Figment2_VariantCover

“Figment 2” will be written by Jim Zub and penciled by Ramon Bachs. The Disney Kingdoms team shared with me the cover artwork created by John Tyler Christopher. He also drew an incredible action figure variant cover for this first issue (I know I’m not the only one wishing those action figures were real!).

I recently caught up with Jim Zub, who wrote the first “Figment” mini-series, to learn more about what readers can expect.

Steven: What was your reaction to the fan response to the original Figment miniseries?

Jim: “Working with these beloved characters and having our new story be embraced by Disney fandom was an absolute thrill. Whenever you’re working with established material, you want to find a balance between giving people what they expect and adding something new and unexpected. I’m incredibly proud we were able to do just that in a way that respect the core themes that make Journey Into Imagination so special.”

The miniseries was an origin story for Dreamfinder and Figment. Where do you hope to take readers with this new adventure?

Jim: “Our new journey picks up right where the previous mini-series left off. Figment and Dreamfinder are now in the modern world and they’re going to discover that a lot of things have changed in their absence. The legacy of dreams and imagination they left behind more than a hundred years ago is greater than they ever expected, but they’re going to find it hard to live up to their own legend. Couple that with a young dreamer inspired by the Academy Scientifica-Lucidus and a dark threat from an unexpected source and we’ve got all the ingredients for high adventure.”

I recall hearing you rode the original EPCOT Center attraction with Dreamfinder. Do you have a favorite memory from that experience?

Jim: “I visited Walt Disney World Resort over 25 years ago, so my memories of the original Journey Into Imagination attraction aren’t razor sharp. Going through the reference material sent over from Walt Disney Imagineering helped remind me of the main visual elements. We wanted to bring those elements into our comic in unexpected ways. Some of it is through lines of dialogue or lyrics of music, but also specific visual motifs as well. With both stories, I’ve tried channeling the feelings of wonderment and exploration the attraction left me with.”

If you missed the first miniseries, Disney Kingdoms recently released a hardbound book of all five-issues. I found my copy at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort.

Look for “FIGMENT 2” coming to Disney Parks this fall.

Delicious Treats Coming to Zuri’s Sweets Shop at Disney’s Animal Kingdom This June

posted on June 12th, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

NZT7998413

I’m excited to give you a first look at delicious treats coming to a new shopping experience in Disney’s Animal Kingdom called Zuri’s Sweets Shop. This location will be found at Harambe Market starting June 17. I caught up with Patrice Guy, a merchandiser at Disney Theme Park Merchandise, to learn what guests can expect.

NZT7998414

“We have created approximately 80 new items that range from decorative candy apples to uniquely flavored chocolate bars to delicious popcorn,” explained Patrice. “With Zuri’s Sweets Shop, we wanted to offer highly-themed goods inspired by the sights, sounds and flavors of Africa. Many of the items will be unique to this location making them delicious gifts for loved ones, or something special to enjoy during a visit to the park.”

NZT7998415

Guests will find three distinct art programs for these new treats. The first program uses characters from Disney’s “The Lion King” including Simba, Timon, and Pumbaa. Guests will find a lollipop shaped like Simba’s paw, animal crackers, and, my favorite, chocolate mini crocodiles.

Colorful patterns and whimsical animals inspired the second art program. Items will include Rice Krispies treats with nods to the animal world, or Mickey Mouse-shaped creamy, chocolate-dipped coconut patties. The five chocolate bar set includes flavors such as milk chocolate with spicy cinnamon and banana chip.

NZT7998416

Patrice let me try African Spice popcorn that has a hint of cardamom. It was fantastic (she had to take the bag away from me).

NZT7998417

Finally, the location will offer African spice rubs and a gourmet cocoa set. The item I can’t wait to use is a bottle of Flame Tree Barbeque sauce at home! Patrice worked with chefs from Disney’s Animal Kingdom in order to correctly capture the sweet and spicy flavor.

Stay tuned for additional looks inside the shop in the coming weeks.

A new retail location, Super Hero Headquarters, recently opened in Downtown Disney West Side at Walt Disney World Resort.

Enthusiasts and emerging super hero fans alike will find merchandise featuring their favorite super hero characters, including action figures, collectibles, apparel, costumes, accessories and Vinylmation.

tshwdw123456

When I recently visited the shop, I was excited to see several items from my favorite film from last summer, “Guardians of the Galaxy”.

The location also carries a selection Disney Infinity figures and playsets.

tchwdw123456

In addition to the numerous super hero offerings, I loved the little details found throughout the shop. The clocks above the main entrance were a nice touch, especially the one showing the time in Tahiti.

Super Hero Headquarters is located adjacent to D Street in Downtown Disney West Side.

Decorative Hand Sanitizers Join a Summer of New Souvenirs at Disney Parks

posted on June 1st, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

NHS6486491

This summer, Disney Theme Park Merchandise is introducing several new souvenirs at Disney Parks. These items will make great gifts for loved ones or serve as a nice memory from your Disney vacation. For my first “Summer of New Souvenirs” story, I’m highlighting my favorite new things – decorative hand sanitizers. Having a son, I carry hand sanitizer everywhere I go, and these designs are fantastic!

NHS6486492

There will be approximately 20 new hand sanitizers arriving at Disney Parks in late June and early-to-mid July. The artwork features popular Disney characters including Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Anna, Elsa and other select Disney Princesses. Sleeping Beauty Castle from Disneyland park and Cinderella Castle from Magic Kingdom Park will also be included in the mix.

NHS6486493

Each hand sanitizer comes with a specially designed 1 fluid ounce bottle and a key chain split ring with lobster claw clasp. At this time, we will not offer refill bottles yet you can refill the bottle with your favorite hand sanitizer once empty.

NHS6486494

The Force is strong with my favorite designs featuring R2-D2 and Darth Vader. They are due to arrive this August in select merchandise locations at Disney Parks (they are insta-buy for me!).

Hand sanitizer will retail for $8.95 (plus tax). Please note that retails are subject to change without notice.

Look for additional Disney Parks Blog articles in the coming months with other new souvenirs.

Orange Bird Returns to Sunshine Tree Terrace at Magic Kingdom Park on May 29

posted on May 29th, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

I’m delighted to share the Orange Bird is returning to the Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland at Magic Kingdom Park starting May 29.

oiyoiy7658771

You may recall my fellow author Pam Brandon sharing in March that Aloha Isle Refreshments and Sunshine Tree Terrace swapped menus and locations. Starting Friday, guests will again find the Orange Bird figurine that was reintroduced to Adventureland in 2012. He is also being added to the marquee for the location. Finally, Orange Bird will be prominently featured in a new attraction poster found at Magic Kingdom Park.

To celebrate, we are offering the poster as an adult and youth T-shirt on our Disney Parks online store from May 29 to June 4. An Art on Demand canvas wrap and print will also be available online. Please allow 3-5 weeks for delivery.

You can order these items by visiting DisneyStore.com/ParkEvents.

I think I’ll welcome him back by having a Citrus Swirl.

posted on May 25th, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

DLMWM485991

Nighttime at Disneyland Resort is now a little brighter with the release of new Made with Magic items. Created especially for the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration, we have introduced a celebratory ear hat and a magical paintbrush. I caught up with Tracie Alt, merchandiser for headware, to learn more about the ear hat.

DLMWM485992

“This is the first new Made with Magic ear hat released at Disneyland Resort since 2012,” explained Tracie. “This new hat includes an all-over 60th anniversary pattern and a specially designed patch. We also made the hat lighter and improved the overall fit.”

DLMWM485993

The paintbrush has multiple light-up functions and operates the same way as the previously released Sorcerer Mickey wand. Guests can use the paintbrush to change the light patterns of other Made with Magic items. You can see how Made with Magic works in this recent Disney Parks Blog article.

Both the ear hat and the paintbrush will interact with select nighttime spectaculars at Disneyland Resort. Guests can also use these new items at select Disney Destinations around the world.

Look for these and other Made with Magic items in select merchandise locations at Disneyland Resort.

Magic Kingdom Park Mountain Challenge Completed

posted on May 22nd, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

wdw500pm

Earlier this morning, I shared my plans to conquer the mountains of Magic Kingdom Park for the 24-hour party. I’m happy to report that my challenge has been completed. Here’s a quick look back at my journey.

SMC7895711

My morning started with an out-of-this-world journey on Space Mountain in Tomorrowland. I love the entrance and exit queue at this attraction. When I was younger, I would stand for hours listening to the music. One day, I want to recreate the lighting and decor in my home.

SMC7895712

My next stop was Seven Dwarfs Mine Train in New Fantasyland. The Dwarfs cottage in the queue may be my favorite thing as it looks like it leaped off the movie screen. I also enjoy the launch down the first hill, and the climb with the shadows of the Dwarfs projected on the wall is awesome!

SMC7895713

My afternoon saw a stop at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland. A special thanks to attractions cast member Miguel for jumping in my photo at the entrance. The image made me laugh after I saw it. Once again, the queue for this ride is fantastic. There are so many hidden details including my favorite, a nod to Rosita from the Tropical Serenade in Adventureland.

SMC7895714

I finished my mountain challenge with a drop down Chikapin Hill at Splash Mountain in Frontierland. I managed to get a face full of water while riding in the last row. I consider it the perfect start to the “Coolest Summer Ever” at Walt Disney World Resort.
