#DisneyKids: First Haircut at Magic Kingdom Park

posted on March 21st, 2014 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

Some of our favorite stories on the blog involve firsts – whether it’s meeting a character, riding a special attraction or just experiencing the magic of Disney Parks for the first time in a unique way.

In fact, there are so many different firsts to experience at Disney Parks that we’re launching a new series featuring your favorites. And we’re kicking things off today with one that many readers have in common – a first haircut.

Our Harmony Barber Shop at Magic Kingdom Park caters to first haircuts and perform about 10 – 15 a day. Some guests feel it’s a rite of passage to have a first haircut inside the Main Street U.S.A. barbershop, according to the barbers.

The first hair cut experience at the Harmony Barber Shop also includes a sample of your child’s trimmed hair to keep as a memento, a certificate and embroidered Mickey Ears that read “first hair cut.”

Now, it’s your turn. Let us know about what was special, memorable or even life changing about your first trip to the Walt Disney World Resort or Disneyland Resort in the comments below and then check back for our new #DisneyKids series.

Global Sing-Along Celebrates 50th Anniversary of ‘it’s a small world’

posted on March 21st, 2014 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

As you may have just heard on ABC-TV’s Good Morning America, you’re invited to join a first-of-its-kind, online global sing-along at SmallWorld50.com to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “it’s a small world,” – the classic Disney Parks attraction that opened as a tribute to UNICEF’s work for children around the world at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.

We’ll be celebrating the anniversary on April 10 but we’ve already kicked off the worldwide celebration. People from more than 25 countries, including bagpipers in Scotland, Bollywood movie actors in India, a firefighter in New York City, and members of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, came together to create a first worldwide “it’s a small world” video.

You can participate in this historic celebration by recording and sharing an online video of yourself singing “it’s a small world” on our new global online hub SmallWorld50.com. At the site, you can also create virtual “it’s a small world” dolls to share with your friends. The Walt Disney Company will donate $150,000 to benefit UNICEF in honor of the 50th anniversary of “it’s a small world,” plus $1 for every sing-along video recorded on SmallWorld50.com and another $1 for every virtual doll created on the website, up to $100,000.

On April 10, hundreds of voices from Disneyland Resort in California, Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Tokyo Disney Resort in Japan, Disneyland Paris in France and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort will come together to sing the unforgettable theme song of the “happiest cruise that ever sailed the seven seas.”

Go share your online video at SmallWorld50.com and keep checking the Disney Parks Blog as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of “it’s a small world.”

Shanghai Disneyland’s Treasure Cove Unveiled

posted on March 18th, 2014 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

On this day in 1967, Pirates of the Caribbean debuted at Disneyland in Anaheim. Nearly 50 years later, as part of The Walt Disney Company Annual Meeting of Shareholders, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger unveiled creative details including the first-ever Pirates-themed land and a new Pirates of the Caribbean attraction designed for the Shanghai Disney Resort. We wanted you to be among the first to have all the details.

SHAN343434

“Pirates of the Caribbean is one of the most iconic attractions in our parks, and we really couldn’t imagine Shanghai Disneyland without Pirates,” said Bob Iger, Disney chairman and CEO. “We wanted to create a one-of-a-kind experience that would appeal to our Chinese guests while remaining true to its Disney heritage.”

For the first time ever, a Disney Park will be home to a Pirates-themed land—Treasure Cove—and an e-ticket attraction called Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle of the Sunken Treasure. The attraction will feature a combination of new technology and innovation to bring guests along a pirate adventure with Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Davy Jones, providing our guests who visit the Shanghai Disneyland Park an experience unlike anything else in the world.

“We are extremely proud of all the work underway to bring the Shanghai Disney Resort to life,” said Tom Staggs, Chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “And we’re excited to re-imagine the iconic world and characters of Pirates for the first time as an entire land that celebrates the creativity, imagination and adventure of both the fan favorite attraction and the popular film franchise.”

The announcement coincides with the completion of key structural work on the Pirates attraction, and marks another exciting milestone in the resort development. Progress continues with construction and Shanghai Disney Resort remains on target to open by the end of 2015.

posted on March 13th, 2014 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

Over the weekend, hundreds of Disney Parks Blog readers joined us at Downtown Disney for our much-anticipated Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” Meet-Up. We packed the theater at AMC Downtown Disney 24 for a special preview screening of the film before it officially opens in U.S. theaters on March 21. In the movie, the Muppets head overseas for a tour—but they end up in the middle of—what else?—an international crime caper. Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey star (alongside all of our favorite Muppets).
