‘Fjording’ Through Norway with Adventures by Disney

posted on August 26th, 2014 by Amanda Adler, Adventures by Disney

There’s nothing more memorable than a really good catchphrase. For myself, and the 37 other travelers on my Adventures by Disney journey through Norway, there’s one phrase that sprung from our lips daily – “Let’s go fjording!”

And go fjording we did. While technically not considered a word in English (or any other language), “fjording” can loosely be defined as: the act of embarking upon adventure while beholding the beauty of the Norwegian fjords.

A fjord is a long, narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs that is usually formed by glacial erosion. But, since a picture is worth a thousand words, ta da! This is the Geirangerfjord area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the many fjords visited on this adventure.

We hiked the fjords in Flam (and I was photobombed by this sheep along the way).
fjofjo739222

We set off in a speedboat on a fjord safari through another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naeroyfjord (and sported some colorful, albeit effectively windproof, neon yellow “fjording” gear).

We slept in rooms with spectacular fjord overlooks, and even used public restrooms that boasted some magnificent sights (a loo with a view). It really brought a whole new meaning to the phrase “when nature calls.”

Above all, we took some time to simply enjoy the incredible beauty the Norwegian fjords provided (and they made for a great selfie).

Clearly you can see why Oxford and Merriam-Webster need to add the term “fjording” to next year’s dictionaries!

In addition to fjording, an Adventure by Disney trip to Norway offers even more of the great outdoors. In my next post, I’ll tell you all about rafting, farming, glacier(ing) and more.

Setting Off on a ‘Frozen’ Journey with Adventures by Disney

posted on August 21st, 2014 by Amanda Adler, Adventures by Disney

Fjords, folk dancing, glaciers, Vikings and, of course, Anna and Elsa. These are a few of the only things I knew about Norway when I set out to spend eight days and seven nights exploring the Nordic countryside with Adventures by Disney.
Setting Off on a ‘Frozen’ Journey with Adventures by Disney

This Norway trip, which is a new Adventures by Disney itinerary for 2014, explores the beauty of this Scandinavian country – from the quaint villages to the breathtaking landscapes (my Facebook friends back home were as green with envy as the verdant green of the mountainous scenery I was showing off in my online photo albums) – all while following in the footsteps of the filmmakers who created “Frozen.”
Setting Off on a ‘Frozen’ Journey with Adventures by Disney

As I prepared for my trip, I was filled with questions. Would my diet for the week consist mostly of pickled fish? (No. In fact, I ate the freshest, straight outta the stream, fish I’ve ever seen, along with a variety of non-seafood dishes. Reindeer meatballs anyone?) Exactly how many trolls would I spot? (Sadly, none. They are an elusive bunch.) What does snow do “in summer” in Norway? (Olaf would be happy to know that atop the fjords, snow is very much still in its “not melted” form. No flurries from Elsa required.)

Case in point, behold the beauty of one of our first stops, the Aurlandfjord. These photos offer up proof of snow’s existence in summer, and show off all that luscious green I mentioned earlier.

One thing I didn’t question was that I would have a fantastic time. This was my third Adventures by Disney trip and I’ve learned that the great thing about traveling with Adventures by Disney is that they handle the planning for you. I could rest assured knowing that all the details of my adventure were thoughtfully arranged, my transportation and most of meals were set, and that from the moment my plane touched down in Bergen I would be treated like a VIP by two expertly-trained Adventure Guides.

And, as always, I wasn’t disappointed. My Adventure Guides, Kira and Torgeir (pronounced “tour guy” – could that be any more perfect?), were nothing short of amazing. How could anyone not have fun with this madcap duo in charge?
Setting Off on a ‘Frozen’ Journey with Adventures by Disney
And as soon as I arrived, another answer to one of my questions became abundantly clear – Bergen really does resemble a real-life Arendelle!

Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog, where I’ll share stories from throughout my Adventures by Disney Norway trip!

Bidding a Bittersweet ‘Adios’ to Costa Rica With Adventures by Disney

posted on July 22nd, 2014 by David Roark, Manager of Photography, Yellow Shoes Creative Group

My Adventures by Disney journey through Costa Rica has, sadly, come to an end. However, I wanted to share with you some final memories from this unique trip.

Our last evening in Central America was truly spectacular, including mojito making lessons (with a non-alcoholic cocktail option for the teens!), a delicious farewell dinner and lively regional music. We even enjoyed a live performance from local dancers dressed in the traditional wardrobe of Guanacaste in Costa Rica.

Best of all, the performance was capped off with a dance lesson for the entire group!

BAF665393

But, what truly made our adventure so remarkable was our Adventure Guides Ron (or, as we called him, “Ponce de le Ron”) and Frankie (with his trusty sidekick Teddy).

BAF665394

It was these guys who really made the trip magical! From leading us through the rainforest and keeping us entertained during rain storms, to feeding us, guiding us, sharing stories of the local culture and filling us all with laughter, Frankie and Ron went above and beyond to make this an adventure we’ll always remember.

BAF665395

Thank you for following along on my Adventures by Disney journey this past week. I hope you enjoyed hearing about my Costa Rican adventure as much as I enjoyed sharing my stories (and photos)!

Catamaran Water Fun in Costa Rica with Adventures by Disney

posted on July 19th, 2014 by David Roark, Manager of Photography, Yellow Shoes Creative Group

Another beautiful day out here in Costa Rica as we continue to share our Adventures by Disney journey with you! Over the past few days, our teen photographers have taken some breathtaking images with their Nikon cameras, zip lined through the tropical rainforest and white-water rafted through the raging waters of the Tenorio River.

crrrrr738111

Today we ventured out into the Pacific Ocean for our catamaran excursion. With the secluded beaches surrounding us, we felt like we were on our own private island! The teens looked forward to snorkeling, paddle boating and using their Nikon CoolPix AW cameras to snap some awesome underwater photos.

crrrrr839232

Speaking of photos, I captured this action shot just before they all went overboard!

As we headed under the sea, our teen photographers had fun taking photos of each other as they snorkeled around the pristine blue waters of the ocean.

crrrrr938993

Besides all the wonderful activities that we enjoyed in the ocean, the teens became one with nature as they shot some incredible photos of the natural beauty that Costa Rica is known for.

crrrrr939024

Courtney perfectly captured the bright reds and the water droplets on these flowers.

Faris put his zooming skills to use with this amazing shot of a dragonfly.

Check back for my next post of our teen-focused trip as we continue to explore this incredible region with Adventures by Disney!

A Wet and Wild Rafting Excursion With Adventures by Disney in Costa Rica

posted on July 18th, 2014 by David Roark, Manager of Photography, Yellow Shoes Creative Group

Our rain dance seemed to finally scare off the clouds and bring out the sun here in Costa Rica! Continuing on our teen-focused Adventures by Disney trip, we set off on our white water rafting adventure along the beautiful Tenorio River.

CRR557641

While shooting down the roaring rapids and bobbing over gushing waters, I captured some great action shots of our teens rafting down the Tenorio. I have to say, they braved the rapids really well (I’ll let this photo speak for itself)!

After our journey through the river, we were treated to some incredible views in Guanacaste, with views overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The natural beauty of this place is absolutely incredible and provided us with some great photo opportunities. With the weather conditions finally improving, our teen photographers started snapping away at photos of the magnificent sunset!

CRR557642

As another action-filled day came to an end, our teens showed off their creative side with some really neat late-night light painting on the beach.

CRR557644THUMB CRR557643THUMB

Tomorrow we will be on a catamaran adventure, where the teens will be snorkeling and shooting some great photos with their Nikon Coolpix water-proof cameras. Dive in with us as we continue on our journey with Adventures by Disney!

Thrills, Chills and Hot, Hot Springs on an Adventures by Disney Costa Rica Vacation

posted on July 16th, 2014 by David Roark, Manager of Photography, Yellow Shoes Creative Group

Greetings from Costa Rica once again as I continue to share highlights from the teen-focused Adventures by Disney trip through this breathtaking region! Since my last update our travels have taken us to the Arenal volcano region, where our teenage photographers have had some time to take a break from snapping photos to focus on enjoying the fun and adrenaline-pumping adventures that abound here.

Here is a photo I captured of one of the teens, Faris, as he gets ready to zip line through the rainforest treetops and literally soar across the sky!

Faris zip line

The weather has been rainy (which is fitting considering we are in a rainforest after all), which has made photography tricky and given me a good reason to break out my waterproof Nikon 1-AW1, but the excitement and adventure continues.

And we’ve had some time to relax and unwind as well with an evening dip in natural hot springs that are heated by the volcano itself. The teens certainly seemed to enjoy it.

Now onto our next adventure, which includes white water rafting and a trip to Guanacaste on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. I’ll be sharing more stories and, of course, more photos along the way. Check back for more from Adventures by Disney!

Teen Photographers Explore Costa Rica with Adventures by Disney

posted on July 15th, 2014 by David Roark, Manager of Photography, Yellow Shoes Creative Group

Hola! I’m writing this post from Tortuguero, located in the rainforest of beautiful Costa Rica, where I am taking part in an exciting Adventures by Disney trip.

This trip to Costa Rica is a special teen-focused departure that includes photography classes that allow our teenage travelers to document their experiences as they explore this breathtaking region. Throughout the week I’ll be sharing photos captured by these young artists with you. (These photos were taken with new Nikon D3100 cameras provided to the teens by Nikon, the official camera of Adventures by Disney).

Tortuguero is the most important nesting site in the Western Hemisphere for a variety of sea turtle species.

Here’s an aerial shot of Tortuguero as captured by teen photographer Brooke.

Here the group set out on a boat tour to test their skills at capturing photos of wildlife, including caiman, macaw, iguana and a handful of indigenous bird species.

Laguna Lodge, where we stay during this part of our adventure, is uniquely situated on a very narrow barrier island that separates the Caribbean Sea from the mainland of Costa Rica. Dinner took place alongside the river at Laguna Lodge, and the teens were treated to music from a reggae band and a limbo contest. The evening was capped off with a nighttime tour of the beach in search of nesting sea turtles.

Next on our itinerary is a stop at a working pineapple plantation as we make our way to Arenal volcano. Stay tuned for more photos as we continue our Adventures by Disney trip through Costa Rica!
