Uncover Hidden Gems in New York City with Adventures by Disney

posted on November 30th, 2015 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

New York City is always one of my favorite places to visit. But I have to say, seeing “The Big Apple” with Adventures by Disney is by far my favorite way to explore this iconic city.

New York City

I truly had no idea what a treat I was in for when I set off on this 4-day, 3-night Long Weekend trip. I’ve been to Manhattan many times and, while I knew there was still a seemingly endless amount of things that I had yet to uncover, this adventure opened my eyes to some experiences I couldn’t have even imagined.

Case in point – the private Adventures by Disney experience at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Here we stepped inside restored apartments from several different time periods. In each apartment we met costumed interpreters who played the part of past residents in the building, sharing with us their authentic life story (as learned from research about the actual families who lived there). It was a moving experience I’ll never forget.

After visiting the tenements, our group delighted in a meal of small plates prepared by local eateries. These culinary treats represented the foods eaten by immigrants who have come to the area. While everything was delicious, it also provided many in our group with the opportunity to sample something they would be hesitant to order off a menu otherwise (the pickled pineapple was a personal favorite of mine).

Good Morning America

We also got to spend a very good morning at “Good Morning America.” Sure, you might start every day by watching this popular ABC show, but how often do you get to watch it live inside the Disney’s Times Square Studios in New York? Our group got to do just that! And I even got to go back into the control booth. It was a morning I’ll never forget.

Statue of Liberty

But all this was just the beginning! Stay tuned for my next post where I cut a rug, channel my inner Ariel and explore more of New York City with Adventures by Disney!

Top 5: Savoring International Food Traditions with Adventures by Disney

posted on November 23rd, 2015 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

It’s right about this time of year that I tend to get food on the brain. Today it’s traditional Thanksgiving turkey and pumpkin pie, but next week I’ll start dreaming of peppermint, sugar cookies and other sweets as visions of sugarplums start prancing through my head.

One of my favorite parts about traveling with Adventures by Disney is having the chance to sample regional delights that act as the traditional foods of places around the globe. From Peking duck in Beijing, ouzo in Greece or even authentic New York pizza, there’s a great big culinary world to explore, and I want to taste it all!

With this in mind I’m bringing you my top five picks for savoring international food traditions with Adventures by Disney:

This is truly a country known for food, wine and decadence. And on the Adventures by Disney Italy trip you can sample (and stuff yourself) with all your Italian favorites. On this itinerary you have an entire day in Tuscany with a morning pasta-making session with an Italian chef, then sample wine in the Chianti wine-growing region and learn to infuse your own olive oil at an organic working farm. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

Quinoa is currently a major culinary craze here in the U.S., but in Peru, quinoa has been a long-time dietary staple. And on the Adventures by Disney Peru trip, you can sample everything from assorted quinoa-based salads to chicken breaded in a quinoa coating. My favorite food-based experience on this vacation is the traditional Andean feast known as Pachamanca. Your dinner is cooked on top of hot stones in an earthen oven. It’s one of the most memorable meals you’ll ever enjoy.

I am a total sucker for anything Scottish. On the Adventures by Disney Scotland vacation you can enjoy one of my favorite things ever, scones! You’ll travel to one of the most mystically beautiful places on earth, the Isle of Skye, where you learn the art of scone making at a local village bakery. I recommend sampling them with a spot of tea (which you definitely should sip with your pinkie finger up).

European Christmas Markets
On the Adventures by Disney Holiday Danube River Cruise you can explore Christmas Markets at nearly every port – from Vienna to Budapest and more. Here you’ll find not only one-of-a-kind crafts and gifts, but also more traditional food and drink than your heart could ever desire! Gingerbread, mulled wine, bratwurst … the list goes on and on. Trust me, you’ll want to pack your stretchy pants.

Brown cheese! Known as “brunost,” caramelized brown Scandinavian whey cheese is found pretty much everywhere you look in Norway, and it’s especially popular for breakfast. On the Adventures by Disney Norway vacation, you’ll travel to a quaint village nestled in the fjords where you’ll learn traditional cheese making and sample brown cheese, along with other regional favorites.

What international food specialty are you most eager to savor on an Adventures by Disney vacation?

Good Morning from Rome with Adventures by Disney

posted on November 16th, 2015 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

Rome is far and away one of my favorite cities. It’s steeped in culture and history, and also filled with the vibrant bustling of progress. Scooters wiz by the Colosseum, and ancient ruins stand amongst thriving modern office buildings. It’s a place truly unlike any other.

This expansive morning shot of the city, highlighting the ancient Roman Forum in the foreground, was taken on the Adventures by Disney Italy vacation, and I think it truly captures the beauty of city at sunrise: Just before the commuters, cars and cacophony of sights and sounds descend upon the city.

A Hassle-Free Honeymoon with Adventures by Disney

posted on November 4th, 2015 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

What’s your dream honeymoon? Beaches? Sightseeing? Opulent dining? Unforgettable activities? An Adventures by Disney vacation offers all these options and more!

When I got married four years ago my husband petitioned for booking an Adventures by Disney trip for our honeymoon and his reasoning was pretty solid: With all the stress that goes into planning a wedding, why not book a honeymoon where all the planning had already been done for us? By choosing Adventures by Disney we knew we’d get an amazing honeymoon experience without the legwork that normally goes into mapping out a getaway to a foreign land.

Heidelberg, Germany

We chose an adult-exclusive departure of the Adventures by Disney Germany trip, which fulfilled my fairytale dreams of sleeping in a castle (and seeing castles – we toured four in all), strolling through quaint European villages, trotting along on a horse-drawn carriage ride and finding out what my husband looks like in lederhosen (I know I’m partial but I think it’s a good look for him).

And while I don’t say this often (or at all now that we’re a few years into this marriage), my husband is an absolute genius for choosing Adventures by Disney. The experience was romantic, hassle-free, fun and truly memorable. We had the opportunity to venture off on our own to explore the cities we visited, while coming together with our fellow adventurers to enjoy unique experiences we likely wouldn’t have had the opportunity to plan on our own, such as biking along an Alpine lake, trying our hand at pretzel making and exploring the “Romantic Road” of Bavaria on a twilight tour with a lamp-lit night watchman.

Neuschwanstein Castle

And we weren’t the only ones drawn to this sort of carefree honeymoon experience. On our tour there was another honeymooning couple. We became close friends throughout our trip, and we are still close today! We sailed with our fellow Adventures by Disney pals on the Disney Fantasy this past January, and we’ll be enjoying some time at Walt Disney World Resort together in just a few days time. Is another Adventures by Disney trip in the plans to help celebrate our 5-year anniversary next year? You bet. I wouldn’t want to mark this occasion any other way.

Which Adventures by Disney location would make for your ideal honeymoon getaway?

Experiencing the Enchantment of Ireland with Adventures by Disney

posted on October 28th, 2015 by Terry Brinkoetter, Public Relations Director

Recently I told you about some of the awesome sights that our group experienced on the Adventures by Disney Ireland trip. In spite of all we saw and did, sightseeing didn’t top the list of my favorite things about this itinerary.

Dromoland Castle

The real adventure was all the experiences that connected us to this magical land and to one another. Among the trip highlights were three nights spent visiting Dromoland Castle. As I mentioned in an earlier post, spending the night in a castle was what most people in our multi-generational group were looking forward to experiencing. Suffice it to say, it exceeded everyone’s expectations. Even the greeting upon our arrival at Dromoland brought many of us to tears.

Handling a Dromoland Castle Grounds Owl

Moments like that were in abundance all week long. A “Hawk Walk” took us across stately grounds where the magnificent birds would land on your arm tempted by a tasty morsel. The Cliffs of Moher gave me goose-bumps, with a shimmering afternoon sun causing the sea and towering cliffs to glow. Contrast that with our visit to an idyllic Irish farm where young and old alike were mesmerized by the herding skills of the sheep dog, eager to feed little lambs, and kept in stitches by the matriarch of the homestead who taught us how to make scones before serving up one incredible lunch.

It’s that combination of places and people that make traveling with Adventures by Disney so special. By end of week, we hadn’t just visited Ireland; we’d lived it. We stood in awe of the sights. We laughed and learned together. And you could sense members of the group reconnecting with loved ones and making new friendships that would last a lifetime. What started as a band of friendly travelers had become like family – our very own Clan Disney.

There’s nothing that compares with the emotional high of visiting the world’s most amazing destinations and sharing the experience with family and friends. And nobody brings those experiences to life like Adventures by Disney.

Lucky Indeed Are Those Who Travel to Ireland with Adventures by Disney

posted on October 21st, 2015 by Terry Brinkoetter, Public Relations Director

I recently returned from the Adventures by Disney Ireland vacation and came back feeling like I had snatched up a whole bunch of 4-leaf clovers. Fair warning: this is not a trip for everyone. I recommend it only if you love breathtaking scenery, meeting wonderful people and participating in experiences that range from the sublime to the spectacular. If you like the idea of all that, then you might just find yourself getting emotional during this adventure.

First stop was the capital city of Dublin. We packed so much into our time here, from Trinity College and the magnificent Book of Kells to the River Liffey waterfront, beautiful parks and gardens. We also hopped the Temple Bar restaurant and pub scene. We were able to pack so much in because of privately guided tours that are hallmarks of traveling with Adventures by Disney. They ensured we made the most of every minute. It’s a lot like having a countrywide FastPass, where you waltz right past the queues and into top attractions like the world-famous Guinness Storehouse in the St. James’ Gate Brewery.

The Storehouse tour was a hit even with the kids in our group and with adults who didn’t imbibe in ales or beers. Our group was whisked into the Storehouse through a side entrance and straight up to a private lunch. Afterward, a Guinness representative was our host for a look at the history and operation of one of Ireland’s most well-known and beloved brands.

From cosmopolitan Dublin we were off to visit the Rock of Cashel, a towering fortress and one of many “wows” we experienced during the trip. No boring history lesson here. Instead, our local guide made the ancient ruins come alive with stories of battles, pillaging and looting – all the things that made the Medieval age so interesting.

More fun was waiting for us when we arrived in the lovely town of Killarney. (Ireland is filled with lovely towns. They even have an annual “Tidiest Town” competition. Who knew?)

With a free afternoon in Killarney some in the group relaxed and took advantage of our hotel’s great amenities. Others explored the town, while fitness buffs did some serious cycling on paths through the lush green forest and along the lakeshore.

Based on what was literally inside “scoop,” I had a completely different focus: ice cream. I think everyone in our group ultimately made an ice cream stop during our time in Killarney. And there were some heated discussions over this cold treat – namely, what the best flavor was. My pick was the Caramelized Brown Bread, but the Dingle Sea Salt and Dingle Gin – yes, gin – were pretty popular.

After dinner, the day took a turn and got a little scary, but that’s because we ventured out on a nighttime ghost tour. In a macabre, decked out motor coach, we visited all of Killarney’s local “haunts.” I’m happy to report that everyone made it safely back to the hotel where nighttime treats were waiting – cookies and milk for the little ones and warm Irish Coffees for the grownups.

There’s so much more to the Adventures by Disney Ireland experience. Watch the Disney Parks Blog for the rest of my report!

Room With A View: An Irish Castle Dream with Adventures by Disney

posted on October 16th, 2015 by Terry Brinkoetter, Public Relations Director

Have you ever dreamed of spending the night in a castle? If so, you’re not alone. I recently ventured off to the Emerald Isle on the Adventures by Disney Ireland trip, and nearly everyone on this 7-night, 8-day vacation said what they were most looking forward to was sleeping in a castle.

In true Disney fashion, that wish would be fulfilled in spectacular style, but it was just one of many pots of gold we’d find along this rainbow of an adventure.

I’ll share a full report from this trip soon, but first let me share just one photo of that coveted castle. This is Dromoland Castle, a luxury hotel that has hosted many dignitaries over the years (including all of the dignified adventurers on my trip). Looking out on the verdant green surrounding the castle, the classic fountains and other charming sights found on the Dromoland grounds, it was hard not to get lost in the majesty and fantasy of it all.
