Planes, Trains, Automobiles and Beyond with Adventures by Disney

posted on October 8th, 2014 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

On an Adventures by Disney vacation you can truly see the world. But as every traveler knows, sometimes the journey can be just as exciting as the destination itself. With Adventures by Disney you can be sure that journey will be full of fun and unique experiences.

PTA807042

Here are simply a few examples of the ways you can travel – with style and with squeals of adrenaline – on an Adventures by Disney trip.

Take Flight
Airborne adventures are part of many Adventures by Disney itineraries. Soar between the Greek isles, jet from mainland Ecuador to explore wildlife in the Galapagos, or explore the diversity of the land “down under” as you fly from the Great Barrier Reef to the Outback and beyond on our Australia adventure.

All Aboard!
There are few things more relaxing than simply sitting back and watching the scenery roll by on a train ride, and many Adventures by Disney itineraries allow you to do just that. Hop aboard the Alaska Railroad for a scenic ride along the Kenai Peninsula, savor the memorable train journey to Aguas Calientes – gateway to Peru’s Machu Picchu, or plunge into darkness as you shoot under the English Channel through the Chunnel on a high-speed train ride whisking you from England to France.

Behind the Wheel of an Automobile
When it comes to thrilling transportation options on four wheels, Adventures by Disney has options galore. Board an ice exploration vehicle that travels over the vast Columbia Icefield on the North American Continental Divide, go on an off-road adventure in Arizona and Utah, climb aboard a jeep for a private expedition into the bush country of Africa on a 3-day safari, or visit Briksdal Glacier in Norway via something called a “troll car.”

ABD93493475

From biking to rowing to horse (not to mention donkey, dog and even elephant!) power and beyond, Adventures by Disney offers some pretty magnificent ways to get around.

While the world waits for personal jetpacks and flying cars, you can feel like you’re flying (above the treetops) while zip lining in Costa Rica. Or explore the other exciting modes of transportation offered on our trips by visiting AdventuresByDisney.com!

posted on September 29th, 2014 by Andrae Gill, Adventures by Disney

With more than two-dozen incredible destinations to choose from, Adventures by Disney allows you to see the world while finding your inner foodie. From creating traditional svele pancakes in Norway and crafting handmade pasta and pizza in Italy to harvesting rice in Laos or grape stomping in Greece, you can immerse yourself in local flavor and cuisine no matter which itinerary you choose.

abdabd111111

Here are my top 5 unique hands-on food experiences:

1. Vietnam – The Adventures by Disney trip to Southeast Asia allows you to savor the regional cuisines of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. In Hoi An you can participate in a private cooking class, where you’ll learn how to make some of Vietnam’s delicious traditional dishes. You will even get to pick your own fresh ingredients and spices at a local market with the help of an expert chef.

abdabd222222

2. Greece – As you explore the picturesque Cretan countryside, you’ll get the chance to learn from a shepherd how to make your own cheese pie with honey. In Arolithos, learn how to make your own tsaziki dip, made of a spicy yogurt mixed with cucumbers. You’ll also get to enjoy Greece’s famous moussaka in Delphi, which is an eggplant/potato dish that was part of the Ottoman Empire cuisine.

3.) South Africa – In Stellenbosch, the heart of Cape Dutch wine country, it’s time to roll up your sleeves for an interactive pastry making class hosted by the renowned Institute of Culinary Arts. Learn to prepare Koeksuster, an Afrikaans pastry akin to deep-fried fritters dipped in orange-scented syrup. Then devour your fresh creations as you sip Rooibos tea – a famous Afrikaans combination!

abdabd333333

4. Nashville – Our newest Long Weekend itinerary, Nashville, brings together the best of Southern cuisine and country music history. Here you’ll have the chance to create your own BBQ sauce to take home! You’ll also get to try your hand at making fluffy, buttery biscuits, a true Southern staple.

abdabd444444

5. Germany – Explore the storybook splendor in Germany as you taste your way around castles fit for a royal family. Raise your stein to beer tastings at a local brewery, then put your own twist on rolling and shaping your own fresh pretzel creation at the Striffler Bakery in Rothenburg. The city’s oldest bakery, Striffler’s has been making their famous pretzels since 1644!

I don’t know about you, but talking about all this amazing food is making me hungry! Check out AdventuresbyDisney.com for even more ways to tantalize your taste buds.

Venetian Mask Making in Italy with Adventures By Disney

posted on September 25th, 2014 by Mark Sadowski, Public Relations Director, Disney Destinations

My final days in Italy with Adventures by Disney were full of exploration and hands-on activities. From seeing architectural treasures such as the Piazza San Marco and Basilica, to a private gondola tour, Venice has so much to offer.

Piazza San Marco in Venice with Adventures By Disney Gondola Tour in Venice with Adventures By Disney

Our hotel was just around the corner from Piazza San Marco, which led to extensive shopping and gelato tasting during free time. Ending the day with some incredible wine at Café Florian, while listening to the sounds of live musicians fill the Piazza, is one of many memories from this unforgettable experience.

itaita739113

On the last day of our trip, we visited Tragicomica, a studio where we had a private session on the art of Venetian mask making. The master artisans at Tragicomica create their carnival masks much in the same manner as they were crafted in the 15th century. While I wasn’t quite able to prefect their painting technique during our experience, we all tried our hand and created some truly unique masterpieces to take home.

We ended the day with an incredible dinner where we received our completed masks (after they had been coated to preserve them for many years). Everyone enjoyed seeing – and trying on – their completed creations!

It was a wonderful ending to a truly magnificent Adventures by Disney journey through Italy!

Pasta Making Classes in Tuscany with Adventures By Disney

posted on September 22nd, 2014 by Mark Sadowski, Public Relations Director, Disney Destinations

One of my favorite experiences on my recent Adventures by Disney journey through Italy was spending time in Tuscany. The landscape is filled with vineyards that produce some of the world’s finest wines, as well as small medieval Etruscan towns that dot the surrounding hillsides.

You can’t take a trip to Italy without learning how to cook like the locals. And that’s exactly what our group did at Fattoria Poggio Alloro, a working farm and winery located in the Chianti wine-growing region.

MTP568531

As someone who enjoys cooking (I grew up working in my family’s restaurant), I really got into the immersive pasta making activity with our own personal chef. In fact, so did everyone on my adventure as we mixed, rolled, shaped and even tossed our pasta creations until they reached perfection!

MTP568532THUMB MTP568533THUMB

After making pasta our group toured the family winery, complete with wine tasting and lunch on the terrazzo overlooking the medieval towers of San Gimigano. Adventure Guide Landon even left his co-guide Marco with a hidden “floury” souvenir from the day’s adventure.

MTP568534THUMB MTP568535THUMB

Our Adventures by Disney group also spent a day in Florence, where we said “hello” to Michelangelo’s David and the Duomo, before enjoying a truly unique experience – a VIP tour of Palazzo Vecchio that took us through secret passageways straight out of a Dan Brown novel.

MTP568536

In my next Adventures by Disney Italy post I’m headed to the canals of Venice for mask making, gondola rides and so much more!

Private Experiences in Rome with Adventures By Disney

posted on September 18th, 2014 by Mark Sadowski, Public Relations Director, Disney Destinations

Ciao! I recently came back from an unforgettable journey through the Old World country of Italy with Adventures by Disney. Throughout my nine-day, eight-night stay in “the boot” of Europe, I was completely immersed in the rich traditions, flavors and landscapes of the region as I traveled from Rome to Tuscany and Florence and lastly to Venice.

CER796541

We spent the first few days exploring Rome’s glorious past and some of the amazing landmarks that have made Rome the birthplace of modern civilization. I was in a foodie’s paradise with the outstanding restaurants within walking distance from our hotel. Pizza lovers like me can never go wrong with a slice from ReCafé! We were even within walking distance of the Vatican!

CER796542THUMB CER796543THUMB

Our time in Rome afforded us quite a few special experiences. Most spectacular of all was our private, after-hours tour of the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museum.

CER796544THUMB CER796545THUMB

Led by our Adventure Guides Landon and Marco, along with local expert Stefano, this private experience allowed our group of travelers to have these popular Vatican City locales all to ourselves to explore and admire. With Adventures by Disney there was no waiting in line or crowding to see Michelangelo’s masterpiece!

CER796546

We also enjoyed a special, VIP experience at the Colosseum. Here we even got access to the 3rd—and highest—level, which is reserved exclusively for groups such as ours. While we savored breathtaking views of the Eternal City, Junior Adventurers had their own interactive tour of the Colosseum that provided insight on life in ancient Rome.

Our tour of Rome included many other special features, such as private access to St. Peter’s Basilica and a private tour of Castel Sant’Angelo. We also explored the Piazza Navona, Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and, of course, the legendary Trevi Fountain. Of course I couldn’t help but throw my own coin into the fountain in the hopes this tradition will ensure I’ll visit Rome once again.

CER796547

All that touring definitely made me hungry, so stay tuned to my next post, which takes my Adventures by Disney group to Tuscany to learn the art of pasta making and taste some of the finest wines in the region. Buon appetito!

Olaf’s Adventures by Disney Vacation

posted on September 11th, 2014 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

Recently, I shared my Adventures by Disney Norway vacation. But it seems I wasn’t the only one enjoying a carefree trek around this beautiful Scandinavian country. Olaf, the loveable snowman from the hit Disney film “Frozen,” also traveled with Adventure Guide Kira through the land that inspired the animators who brought him to life.

Kira photographed Olaf throughout his Adventures by Disney journey as he found out what snow does “in Summer.” All started well when he saw the snowcapped fjords of Norway.

olaola739001

But things quickly went downhill for him at The Seven Sisters waterfall in Geirangerfjord where it dawned on him that all that liquid water just might be melted snow! It sure looked beautiful though.

olaola817892

Next up on Olaf’s adventure was the Borgund Stave Church, built in 1250 A.D. This church provided architectural inspiration to the filmmakers of Disney’s “Frozen”.

olaola872363

Olaf’s favorite part of the Adventures by Disney Norway itinerary was a fjord safari aboard a speedboat! Along the way he relaxed in the small village of Undredal, where he learned about the art of Norwegian cheese making, before he continued on through the UNESCO World Heritage site fjord called “Naeroyfjord.”

olaola736894

At last, after a summer full of river rafting, trout fishing, glacier viewing, learning Norwegian folk dancing and more, Olaf’s vacation came to an end.

olaola736885

But don’t worry, Olaf will be back next summer as Adventures by Disney offers another season of fun in Norway. Care to join him?

The Great Outdoors, Norway Style, with Adventures by Disney

posted on August 27th, 2014 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

The sun never sets during the Norwegian summer. Okay, I exaggerate, but only a little. In fact, on the seven nights of my Adventures by Disney trip through Norway, the sun dipped down into a dusk-like state for approximately four hours each evening (and wreaked havoc on my internal alarm clock). All this summer daylight makes Norway an outdoor lover’s paradise.
vgvgvg754221

And our Adventures by Disney travels certainly took advantage of all the outdoor adventure that Norway has to offer. We rafted through glacier-fed rivers in Voss. I even jumped in to feel the refreshing coolness against my skin (and immediately shot out of the water shivering “cold, cold, cold” while channeling my inner Anna from “Frozen”). And then, because apparently the glacial waters gave me short-term memory loss, I did it a second time (channeling my inner Dory from “Finding Nemo”).
vgvgvg890012

We also got up close to a few glaciers by foot and by raft. Clearly Elsa beat us here!

Exploring Glaciers with Adventures by Disney Exploring Glaciers with Adventures by Disney

And we canoed, row boated and fished for trout in the most turquoise waters I’ve ever seen (and yes, I’ve been to the Caribbean) at Lake Loen.
vgvgvg847993

But of all the outdoor activities I enjoyed on this Adventures by Disney journey, the most memorable one was spending a day down on the farm. Or, more accurately, “up” on the farm. Norwegians have a rich farming history and, let me tell you, farming in the fjords is no easy task. Farmers face steep climbs and treacherous mountainous terrain as they work from sun up to sun down (which, if you remember what I said earlier, is a really long time) throughout the summer. Here I got to try my hand at sowing and reaping. And pet some sheep, llamas and goats. Behold the cuteness (the animals, not me. Clearly I’m soaked)!

Up on the Farm in Norway with Adventures by Disney Up on the Farm in Norway with Adventures by Disney

Ah yes, the rain. Norway is known for it, with some regions of the country getting upwards of 250 rainy days each year (the upside is all that gorgeous greenness I referenced in my first post). On this trip, we experienced mostly days full of sunshine and blue skies, but our rainy visit to the farm provided us with an authentic picture of Norwegian farming culture – rain or shine. And it gave me a chance to look like the grim reaper.
vgvgvg837998

From the storybook village of Bergen to fjording), rafting, farming and so much more, my Adventures by Disney Norway trip was truly a remarkable experience I’ll never forget. I hope you enjoyed sharing in this journey with me!

‘Fjording’ Through Norway with Adventures by Disney

posted on August 26th, 2014 by Amanda Adler, Public Relations Manager

There’s nothing more memorable than a really good catchphrase. For myself, and the 37 other travelers on my Adventures by Disney journey through Norway, there’s one phrase that sprung from our lips daily – “Let’s go fjording!”

And go fjording we did. While technically not considered a word in English (or any other language), “fjording” can loosely be defined as: the act of embarking upon adventure while beholding the beauty of the Norwegian fjords.

A fjord is a long, narrow arm of the sea bordered by steep cliffs that is usually formed by glacial erosion. But, since a picture is worth a thousand words, ta da! This is the Geirangerfjord area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and is one of the many fjords visited on this adventure.
fjofjo734221

We hiked the fjords in Flam (and I was photobombed by this sheep along the way).
fjofjo739222

We set off in a speedboat on a fjord safari through another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Naeroyfjord (and sported some colorful, albeit effectively windproof, neon yellow “fjording” gear).

'Fjording' through Norway with Adventures by Disney 'Fjording' through Norway with Adventures by Disney

We slept in rooms with spectacular fjord overlooks, and even used public restrooms that boasted some magnificent sights (a loo with a view). It really brought a whole new meaning to the phrase “when nature calls.”

'Fjording' through Norway with Adventures by Disney 'Fjording' through Norway with Adventures by Disney

Above all, we took some time to simply enjoy the incredible beauty the Norwegian fjords provided (and they made for a great selfie).
fjofjo948997

Clearly you can see why Oxford and Merriam-Webster need to add the term “fjording” to next year’s dictionaries!

In addition to fjording, an Adventure by Disney trip to Norway offers even more of the great outdoors. In my next post, I’ll tell you all about rafting, farming, glacier(ing) and more.
