Celebrating the Grand Opening of The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at Walt Disney World Resort
posted on October 23rd, 2013 by Ken Potrock, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Disney Vacation Club
Today, we are delighted to open our 12th resort in the Disney Vacation Club family – The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. This resort shares the Victorian elegance of its neighboring resort, with luxurious accommodations and a perfect setting right along the monorail system, within view of the Magic Kingdom Park.
In fact, I like to say this is the second jewel in our monorail crown, following Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, just across the Seven Seas Lagoon.
Our Members and guests will find accommodations suited to every vacationing party, from couples to young families to multi-generational groups. It’ll feel like you’re at home right here near the Magic Kingdom Park!
This morning, Mickey and Minnie Mouse were personally on hand to welcome families to this delightful resort in grand fashion.
The addition of The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa represents an exciting new chapter for Disney Vacation Club – and provides even more vacation options, flexibility, affordability, and access for our guests to the special magic that only Disney can deliver.

“Step in Time” takes on new meaning when applied to the speedy team that built the newest addition to the Disney Vacation Club neighborhood – The Villas at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Clearly fueled by more than just a “Spoonful of Sugar,” the crew in this video managed to construct the entire building in a remarkable 56 seconds!
Oh wait, it’s a time-lapse video. Why does that always trip me up? Still, what the team has created (at an average human speed) is nothing short of spectacular.
Like its sister resort, the new building celebrates the gracious grandeur and casual elegance of a time in which families traveled to Florida by railroad. The villas (which include a variety of artistic salutes to the classic Disney film “Mary Poppins“) welcome families “home” to that bygone era with interior spaces masterfully Imagineered in a style that many of us here at Disney Vacation Club have taken to calling “Main Street modern,” elevating turn-of-the-20th-century living with decidedly 21st-century amenities.
In the fall issue of Disney Files Magazine, Disney Vacation Club senior vice president and general manager Ken Potrock described the experience of exploring the villas as “walking right down the middle of Main Street, U.S.A., with just a touch of Tomorrowland hiding around every corner.”
As Ken made no mention of the speed with which the building came together in this video, I can only assume he understands time-lapse photography better than I do.
The villas open this Wednesday, October 23.

This week, we have hosted more than 100 television, radio, print and online media to showcase our spectacular new pool and dining location. Ka Maka Landing is stunning addition to our Waikolohe Valley, adding an infinity pool and a dynamic splash zone to existing slides, pool, Waikolohe Stream and Menehune Bridge. And donʻt forget that Ulu Cafe now provides great choices for your dining selections at Aulani for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We were able to give sneak peeks to some of our resort guests, and the reaction has been unbelievable. They love swimming in a pool whose edge seems to blend with the horizon of the blue Pacific, and at night, the grotto lights up with stars – just like magic!
So, hele mai! Visit your travel agent or DisneyAulani.com and check out a chance to get your 4th night free with a consecutive four-night stay, along with free breakfasts each morning (for two adults) at Ulu Cafe during your stay. We look forward to seeing you here!

Aloha! Last month, Elliot Mills, Vice President and General Manager of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, shared some exciting details about the expanded water features of the popular Waikolohe Valley and other resort enhancements, which officially open on October 19.
Today we wanted to give you a sneak peek at the spectacular infinity-edge pool with its realistic grotto located at Ka Maka Landing. As you can see by this stunning photo, the new pool is the perfect spot for you to relax and enjoy a gorgeous ocean front view. After dark, a magical starscape of glimmering lights appear on the grotto ceiling and the floor of the pool.
As we approach the official opening on October 19, be sure to check back to see what else we reveal of the new water features and dining options. Hope to see you soon.

Hoʻolauleʻa – a celebration – took over the lagoon fronting Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa on Sunday, as the final night of the 2013 Hawai`i Food & Wine Festival took to the sand with world-famous chefs providing a culinary tour of ethnic foods from around the globe.
The list included Napa Rose Chef Andrew Sutton and Aulaniʻs own Chef Kevin Chong. The event, led by Hawai`i chefs Roy Yamaguchi and Alan Wong, was an evening of friends and fun. The amazing night under the moon and stars included an endless sampling of food and wine, with a finale of fireworks across the sky.

I hope you join me in wishing Todd and our friends and family at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, a happy anniversary! I can hardly believe it has been two years since the official opening and I know the excitement is building as they prepare for their upcoming expansion to the pool and dining areas with Ka Maka Landing and Ulu Cafe on October 19.
Earlier this year, we celebrated the opening of Hale Manu, a new contemporary boutique featuring authentic Hawaiian and luxurious lifestyle merchandise. I like to consider this location a hidden treasure because it’s just off the beaten path past the main lobby. Be sure to make it a “must visit” on your list after you arrive. Hale Manu is also home to our line of graphic apparel tees as well as Dooney & Bourke – that’s worth the trip right there!
But one of my personal favorites is the Maui Divers Tahitian Pearl jewelry collection.
A little closer to the main lobby is where you’ll find Kālepa’s Store. For those of you who have never been to Aulani before, here’s a sneak peek at what’s inside. The Aloha Retro all-over print is the fan favorite here. Check it out!
But it’s Duffy who everyone wants to take home… and with these two aloha and Aulani inspired outfits, who wouldn’t?
Over the next couple months I hope to take you shopping around the resort, so I hope you have your bags packed, sunscreen ready and are ready to shop until you drop. Just keep in mind that we’ll be doing a lot of window shopping, as most of the merchandise seen at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa locations are only available there.
Until next time…

To commemorate the second anniversary of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, last week – and in support of the Nature Conservancy – a global conservation organization, cast members and guests celebrated with the resort’s first-ever Ducky Derby through the Waikolohe Stream. We captured a “duck-eye” view of more than 1,000 rubber duckies starting their journey from the top of Tubestone Curl, then making a mad splash around the stream before racing to the finish line. For each guest participating, Aulani made a $10 donation, resulting in a $10,000 contribution to Hawai`iʻs Nature Conservancy to help preserve and sustain Hawai`iʻs environment – from the mountains to the ocean.
