Waltz in the Park at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

posted on January 30th, 2013 by Michelle Harker, Merchandise Marketing & Communications Project Manager, Disneyland Resort

What do you want to be when you grow up? That’s the infamous question every kid, of every age, always gets. Growing up, I loved films, loved to draw and I loved Disney, so being an animator seemed like the perfect fit! While my career path didn’t necessarily lead me to feature animation, I have had wonderful opportunities to see and do things I never thought possible, including the opportunity to learn more about the fascinating processes of animation, like Ink & Paint!

What I love even more is that our talented team of Ink & Paint artists at Disney’s Hollywood Studios continue to keep the tradition of Ink & Paint alive, sharing a traditional process with Disney fans, old and new.

The newest limited edition 1,000 piece titled Waltz in the Park is set to release on March 16 at Studios Animation Gallery and features a delicately and precisely hand-painted Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse dressed in the iconic costumes of Belle and the Beast as they prepare for their royal entrance into Beast’s Castle.

Waltz in the Park will be available in the following formats, including framing options and retails:

  • Unframed Cel – $150
  • Black Frame and Cel – $240
  • Black Frame with Pin and Cel – $270
  • Black Frame with Pin, Postcard and Cel – $280
  • Gold Frame and Cel – $310

If you’re wondering what the pin that accompanies a couple of these formats looks like, wonder no more.

For those of you in the area, several of the Ink & Paint artists associated with this piece will actually be on hand for a special appearance and signing March 16 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. at Studios Animation Gallery in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

But if you find yourself unable to join us or you’re out of town, don’t worry, Walt Disney Event Services is currently taking pre-orders for the Waltz in the Park cel. Contact Walt Disney Event Services at 407-827-7600, Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. But keep in mind, all orders must be placed no later than Friday, March 15, 2013, at 12:00 p.m. EST. For more information, visit www.ArtofDisneyParks.com.

Don’t let this new cel “waltz” away… instead, let it dance its way into your heart and into your home.

posted on January 17th, 2013 by Shawn Slater, Communications Manager, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment

Did you catch the premiere of the new season of “American Idol” last night? I always enjoy watching the audition episodes, as young people take the first bold step to pursuing their dreams.

I spoke to the team at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and they said they’re already seeing some familiar faces in the New York auditions. These Hollywood hopefuls got their start competing for a Dream Ticket at The American Idol Experience at the Walt Disney World Resort. In fact, last season, five contestants of the coveted Top 13 had been Dream Ticket recipients!

Just as “American Idol” on television makes changes each season, The American Idol Experience has recently been updated with the addition of 14 new songs, which guests can choose to perform for their big moment on stage.

Many of the new songs, including hits from former American Idols, are titles that have been requested by guests auditioning at The American Idol Experience. Taking a cue from the television show, where country music has become more prominent, the list also adds several more songs from that genre.

Here’s the complete list of the recent additions, bringing the total number of songs available for auditions to 158. Which one would be a dream come true for you to perform on The American Idol Experience stage?

  • “American Honey” by Lady Antebellum
  • “Animal” by Neon Trees
  • “Cowboy Casanova” by Carrie Underwood
  • “Dark Side” by Kelly Clarkson
  • “Give Your Heart a Break” by Demi Lovato
  • “Home” by Phillip Phillips
  • “One Thing” by One Direction
  • “Part of Me” by Katy Perry
  • “Please Remember Me” by Tim McGraw, covered by Scotty McCreery
  • “Set Fire to the Rain” by Adele
  • “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson

‘Star Wars’ Weekends 2013 Dates Announced

posted on December 27th, 2012 by Gary Buchanan, Social Media Managing Editor

“Luke, We’re gonna have company!” — Han Solo

If your starship can make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs (I’m still trying to figure out how fast that is), set your hyperdrive for the Disney’s Hollywood Studios sector for May and early June, for the 2013 edition of Star Wars Weekends.

This year’s Force-filled fun will take place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from May 17 – June 9, 2013.

James Arnold Taylor and Ashley Eckstein Share a Laugh On-stage at Star Wars Weekends 2012.  The Pair Will Return as Celebrity Hosts in 2013.

While details are still being planned, we’re excited to announce that James Arnold Taylor and Ashley Eckstein are returning as celebrity hosts for the annual special event. James, the voice behind many of the most famous animated characters in film, television and commercials, is known to Star Wars fans as the voice of Obi-Wan Kenobi on the Star Wars: The Clone Wars TV series. Ashley, who started her show business career as a parade dancer at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, is the voice of Anakin’s ambitious Padawan, Ahsoka Tano, on Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

James is the Official Celebrity Host of Star Wars Weekends 2013, and Ashley is Celebrity Host of “Behind the Force,” a live show that takes fans behind-the-scenes in the Star Wars universe.

Be sure to program your scanning droids to check here for the latest updates from the Galactic Senate about Star Wars Weekends 2013.

For guests who may be considering a visit to Walt Disney World Resort for their very first Star Wars Weekends, here’s a short overview video with our own galactic reporter, “Jedi John” (please note his very stylish “mic saber”). While the celebrity appearances for this year have not been announced (stay tuned for those names in an upcoming post), John talks to some Star Wars celebrities from past events to get their thoughts.

Sights and Sounds at Disney Parks: Last-Minute Disney Holiday Music Gifts

posted on December 22nd, 2012 by Greg Ehrbar, Writer/Author, Disney's Yellow Shoes Creative Group

As Santa’s clock counts down to his big day, I always say there’s nothing like the gift of music (ask people who know me… I really say that). The best thing about music is that you can fill a room with it so everybody enjoys the gift together!
Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney's Hollywood Studios

The big news this year is that, for the very first time, a brand-new musical gem has been performed and recorded especially for The Osborne Spectacle of Dancing Lights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! Much in the tradition of Walt and his animators blending music with state-of-the-art visual wizardry in films such as “Fantasia“, the team at Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Creative Entertainment has crafted this new version of “Winter Wonderland” to make the most of everything those millions of lights can do.

This magnificent, dynamic new rendition was arranged and conducted by veteran Music Director Dan Stamper of Entertainment, whose massive worldwide list of contributions to Disney Parks shows, parades, fireworks spectaculars and big-city special events could fill a website in itself!

“This was an especially unique project,” Dan told me. “It really required those of us who were familiar with what these lights could do, so we would make the most of all the abilities we have with light movements special effects.

“Basically, I wrote the arrangement in ‘layers’ of sounds, so they could come in gradually, then build and build. It’s funny how things like this come together! It just seemed to evolve.” The resulting musical production is unlike any other version of “Winter Wonderland” you’ve ever heard, conceived with every detail of these amazing light displays in mind.

Keep your fingers crossed: Dan is hopeful that there might be more specially-created pieces like “Winter Wonderland” added in the future to the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, in addition to great holiday songs from hit albums.

One of these songs is performed by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (whom you may have seen live during their recent Epcot Eat to the Beat Concert Series gig). The song, “Christmas is Starting Now,” is from “Disney’s Phineas & Ferb Christmas Vacation”.
Disney's Phineas and Ferb Holiday Favorites

“That was the first song ["Phineas & Ferb" co-creator] Dan Povenmire and I wrote for the TV special,” said Story Editor/Scriptwriter Martin Olson. “It set the tone for the rest of the songs. “We first wrote it as a pop tune, then Dan and [Series Original Music Composer] Danny Jacob adapted it to a Big Band arrangement with a live performance in mind.” The song is included on the “Phineas & Ferb Holiday Favorites” album—as well the lovely “That Christmas Feeling,” sung by Martin’s daughter Olivia, who voices Vanessa on the show.
Disney Channel Holiday Playlist Album

New this year is the “Disney Channel Holiday Playlist” album, featuring today’s hottest young Disney Channel Original Series stars, including Ross Lynch of “Austin and Ally“. You’ll be able to see him perform “Christmas Soul” on the Disney Parks Christmas Day Parade on ABC-TV.
Disney's New Holiday Album Featuring Mickey and Company- Disney Jingle Bell Fun

There’s also a new holiday album starring Mickey and company called “Disney Jingle Bell Fun”, a collection of favorite songs with fresh, new arrangements of fun songs from your favorite pals, plus fantastic performances by outstanding vocalists.

“Winter Wonderland” is available exclusively as a download from iTunes or Amazon. All the other albums are available on CD at select Disney Parks shops, retail and online stores and by download.

Happy listening!
