Top 5 Ways the Disneyland Resort Inspired Kids to be Champions of the Environment this Earth Month

posted on April 30th, 2015 by Kevin Rafferty, Jr., Communications Specialist, Disneyland Resort

As Earth Month comes to a close, here are the top five ways the Disneyland Resort connected children in Orange County, Calif., to nature and inspired them to be champions of the environment this Earth Month!

Beach Clean Up

  1. Disney VoluntEARS, kids and families collected more than 100 bags of trash at Huntington State Beach, an event organized by Inside the Outdoors Foundation (ITO). The Disneyland Resort sponsored ITO with a $20,000 donation to support ongoing environmental field trips for students and activities like the beach cleanup.
  2. The Disneyland Resort sponsored Anaheim Community Foundation’s Spring Fun and Eco-Fair at Anaheim’s Oak Canyon Nature Center, where kids and families learned ways to reuse, reduce and recycle. The $20,000 donation helped make possible a mobile eco-fair that visited 10 Anaheim parks, schools and neighborhoods.
  3. Disney VoluntEARS supported environmental awareness events including the country’s largest Children’s Water Education Festival that the Disneyland Resort helped present at the University of California, Irvine, and MUZEO’s TrashARTist Challenge featuring student art made mostly of recycled materials.
  4. Students from Costa Mesa High School’s Environmental & Marine Academy took an environmental tour of Disneyland park and Disney California Adventure park.
  5. The Disneyland Resort invited 140 children from eight Boys and Girls Clubs in Orange County to screen DisneyNature’sMonkey Kingdom” at AMC Theatres at the Downtown Disney District.

New Allergy-Friendly Menus at Disneyland, Walt Disney World Resorts

posted on April 14th, 2015 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer

qpoihda123456

On April 14, Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts will begin to introduce new allergy-friendly menus at approximately 120 quick-service and table-service locations. The menus provide more convenience and readily available options for guests with special dietary requests.

“Over the years, the number of guests with food allergies and intolerances has continued to grow. In 2013 alone, our cast members assisted with more than 650,000 special dietary requests. These new allergy menus are another way in which we can provide high-quality, safe and more accessible alternatives, and the best possible dining experience for guests with specific dietary needs,” says Gary Jones, chef and culinary dietary specialist for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

The new allergy-friendly menus provide allergen content for each menu item, making informed choices easier. Menu selection includes appetizers (where applicable), entrées, side items, desserts and kids’ meals, and focuses on the most common allergens: gluten/wheat, milk, peanut, tree nut and fish.

Guests are still able to consult directly with a restaurant chef or special diets trained cast member. We also encourage guests to continue to communicate special dietary needs to our restaurant cast members, as this allows our culinary team to take extra measures during preparation to prevent the introduction of the allergen.

Walt Disney Parks and Resorts is the recipient of a FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) Award for dedication to providing a safe and enjoyable dining experience for vacationing families and our chefs have been recognized for their commitment to food allergy awareness, education and management.

The new menus will be introduced in signature restaurants on April 14, then debut at other table-service and quick-service restaurants (including Walt Disney World water parks, Downtown Disney and resort hotels) through September 2015. For more information on special dietary requests, click here for Walt Disney World Resort and click here for Disneyland Resort.

Spring Time Treats at the Disneyland Resort

posted on March 30th, 2015 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

Spring is here! Flowers are in bloom, eggs will soon be hidden and you may even find yourself catching a glimpse of a bunny or two. We did! These magnificent treats will debut in candy kitchen locations around the Disneyland Resort this April, so be sure to “hop” by!

aciaci736881

If you’re curious as to how these creations came to life, I have the inside scoop. The Bunny apples are dipped in caramel, then, are intricately dressed with mini marshmallows to create the effect for the mouth and tail. Dip them in white chocolate, add a little sanding sugar (especially on the top of the marshmallow ears). The final touch, a few well-placed (and sometimes colorful) chocolate candies that create the eyes and nose.

Of course, the egg pops are a treat in themselves! The egg-shaped cake pops have been dipped in white chocolate and dressed with milk chocolate discs to create the ears. Finally with the help of some (colorful pixie dust) sanding sugar, and some simple decoration, they’re set!

If you’re curious what gourmet apple will line the shelves, it will once again be the dark chocolate raspberry apple. That’s right Disney fans, it’s back!

aciaci657662

The apples will be smothered in caramel, enrobed in dark chocolate and drizzled with white chocolate and raspberry infused white chocolate. You want more? Great! We literally have you covered from top to bottom. How? The top of the apple, as well as the bottom third of the apple have been encased with a mixture of white chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and chopped roasted almonds.

Look for all of these treats and more at Candy Palace in Disneyland park; Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure park; and Marceline’s Confectionery in the Downtown Disney District!

Which one will you try?

Cinderella Coach is a Magical Treat at Disney Parks

posted on March 16th, 2015 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

Who’s seen Disney’s “Cinderella,” now in theaters? If you haven’t yet, move it to the top of your list! My fellow Disney Parks Blog author, Steven Miller, recently shared some of the exciting new “Cinderella” merchandise headed your way, but i have a special treat for you … actually I have two!

Debuting this month at the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort is a Cinderella Coach inspired apple. It’s safe to say that candy makers got a little ‘carried away’ with this concoction. The apple has been dipped in caramel as well as edible shimmering white chocolate and comes complete with carriage-looking wheels. What are they made of? I guess you’ll have to try one to see!

Another fun way to celebrate the film’s release is with our Cinderella Coach krispy treat, sure to be a fan favorite for any movie-goer.

Here’s a list of locations where you can find them!

St. Patrick’s Day Dining and Entertainment in Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort

posted on March 6th, 2015 by John McClintock, Disney Public Relations

St. Patrick’s Day is Tuesday, March 17, and guests at the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim can celebrate Irish heritage with their pick of locales for variations on the traditional corned beef meal, along with some special St. Patrick’s Day entertainment.

At ESPN Zone, a corned beef, cabbage and potatoes special will be available throughout the day on Tuesday. Sports fans also will be able to accompany the onscreen entertainment with a glass of green beer.

nuinui658221

Catal Restaurant & Uva Bar is offering a St. Paddy’s Feast throughout the month of March with a sandwich featuring shaved corned beef brisket, house sauerkraut, secret sauce and Swiss cheese served on a marbled rye rustic roll and served (in a nod to neighbors across the Channel) with the popular Uva garlic shoestring french fries. The special is paired with Red Trolley Irish Red Ale by Karl Strauss.

For St. Patrick’s Day lunch and dinner at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen, there will be corned beef and cabbage along with a variety of special drink offerings: green beer, baby Guinness shots and, for the more adventurous, Jorge’s Bayou Leprechaun cocktail.

Beginning Friday, March 13, and continuing through St. Patrick’s Day, Crossroads Restaurant at House of Blues offers corned beef sliders, Guinness beer cheese soup, fish & chips and a classic corned beef Reuben sandwich. On St. Patrick’s Day, the dining and entertainment experience will be plussed with green beer, Guinness and Jameson specials all night, live karaoke with The Reel Band, starting at 8 p.m., and free glow sticks and beads for guests. In the House of Blues Music Hall, a St. Paddy’s Day Bash with Street Dogs begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Additional Downtown Disney St. Patrick’s Day entertainment will be provided by traditional Celtic dancers performing in front of WonderGround Gallery from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday. In fact, if you’re looking for a tasty, lively place to celebrate St. Paddy’s with friends and family, look no further than the Downtown Disney District.

Erin go Bragh!
