Charming Treats for St. Patrick’s Day 2014 at Disney Parks

posted on March 15th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

With St. Patrick’s Day celebrations planned for both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts, I visited one of our consumables locations to survey some of the yummy, holiday-themed treats they have made this year. You may recall that several of our merchandise locations contain a show kitchen, which is an on-stage kitchen where cast members make delicious goodies for all to see. This year, the cast members in the show kitchens have added a splash of green to some of their most popular items including Mickey Mouse-shaped cake pops and crispy treats.

They also have created my favorite treat – pretzel rods covered in green sugar or sprinkles. The pretzel rods join sprinkle-covered or chocolate-dipped marshmallow wands.

Finally, I spotted a Leprechaun-like candy apply complete with chocolate, green sugar and a marshmallow. Nearby, I found a character apple that resembles Kermit the Frog from The Muppets. I figured I’d include him in this story because he’s green (plus, I can’t wait for “Muppets Most Wanted” to be in theatres on March 21!)

If you are visiting Disney Parks during St Patrick’s Day, please stop by these locations:

Celebrate Release of ‘Frozen’ on Blu-ray Combo Pack at Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney Marketplace on March 18, 2014

posted on March 14th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

frr839991

The award-winning, Disney animated featured “Frozen” comes to Blu-ray combo pack on Tuesday, March 18. To celebrate the day at Walt Disney World Resort, we are holding a release party at Once Upon a Toy in the Downtown Disney Marketplace from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There will be a DJ spinning some great tunes throughout the day (weather permitting), as well as a photo backdrop available for guests to take pictures.

frr839992

In addition to the Blu-ray combo pack, the Downtown Disney team will offer a small assortment of “Frozen” merchandise including kids’ T-shirts, books and D-Tech on Demand iPhone cases (see my previous Disney Parks Blog story for an update on new and upcoming merchandise).

Finally, Once Upon a Toy will have some pre-designed, kids’ T-shirts from the nearby Disney Design-A-Tee location that day. Look for three different styles including the one shown above with Olaf. Adults can design and personalize similar “Frozen” T-shirts at the Disney Design-A-Tee shop if interested.

I hope you are able to stop by during the party.

Disney Parks Blog Readers Enjoy the Show at the “Muppets Most Wanted” Meet-Up

posted on March 13th, 2014 by Thomas Smith, Social Media Director, Disney Parks

Over the weekend, hundreds of Disney Parks Blog readers joined us at Downtown Disney for our much-anticipated Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” Meet-Up. We packed the theater at AMC Downtown Disney 24 for a special preview screening of the film before it officially opens in U.S. theaters on March 21. In the movie, the Muppets head overseas for a tour—but they end up in the middle of—what else?—an international crime caper. Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey star (alongside all of our favorite Muppets).

And there were some great Muppet-inspired outfits at the event, including a feathered Sam Eagle costume worn by our own Disney Parks Blog author Steven Miller.

After watching Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted,” special guest Sweetums joined us from Disney’s Hollywood Studios for a special photo opportunity.

Guests also checked out the festivities at the Downtown Disney Mighty St. Patrick’s Day Festival, which included The Family Fun Zone presented by “Muppets Most Wanted” with a live DJ, games and family activities inspired by the movie.

Thank you to everyone who attended our latest Walt Disney World Resort meet-up – it was a great time. If you weren’t able to join us to see the movie, remember, Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted” opens in theaters on March 21. Don’t Miss the Mighty Family Fun Zone at Downtown Disney West Side

posted on March 13th, 2014 by Darcy Clark, Marketing Manager, Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

The Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival is in full swing and family fun abounds! One of my favorite highlights from this year’s event is The Mighty Family Fun Zone presented by “Muppets Most Wanted.” Here, guests can enjoy Muppets mayhem, complete with music, games and activities for the whole family.

EBG091672

Inspired by the upcoming film, guests of all ages can pose for Muppets-themed photo ops, learn to draw a Muppets character, let loose at a DJ Dance Party and collect Muppets character trading cards featuring Kermit the Frog, Fozzie Bear, Miss Piggy, Constantine, Beaker and Animal. Of course, guests can get a stamp for their Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival Passport, too!

For a sweet bite, look for special Muppets Rice Crispy Treats at the Downtown Disney Food Trucks.

Visit the Mighty Family Fun Zone presented by “Muppets Most Wanted” at Downtown Disney West Side, located between Cirque du Soleil and House of Blues, from 5pm-9pm through 3/14, then enjoy extended hours, from 12pm-9pm, 3/15-3/17/14.

Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted,” an international crime caper starring Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell, Tina Fey and the whole Muppets gang, hits theaters on March 21, 2014. (Obviously, I plan to see it at AMC Downtown Disney 24!) For more information about The Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival, click here.

In the meantime, I think even Kermit would have to agree with me … through March 17, it is easy being green!

Lucky Day! The Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival Starts Tonight at Downtown Disney!

posted on March 7th, 2014 by Darcy Clark, Marketing Manager, Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

Pam Brandon recently shared some early details on the St. Patrick’s fun planned for Downtown Disney. Today, I want to give you even more insight into what you can expect this year! For starters, the event has a new name: “The Mighty St. Patrick’s Festival” which really ties to the over-the-top revelry we have planned. Spanning eleven days – from tonight through March 17, 2014 – there is more to experience than ever before. With festivities centered around Raglan Road and spilling throughout all of Downtown Disney, I think we can all agree that this celebration is mighty, indeed!

MSP873211

A few of the highlights, below:

  • Live Entertainment – Familiar favorites, including the U2 tribute band “Elevation” and the ever-popular “3 Dollar Band” and “The Willis Clan” mix with Downtown Disney newcomers like “We Banjo 3,” an award-winning quartet from Galway, and “Goitse,” a sought-after group that infuses their own compositions into traditional Irish tunes. With three stages and a non-stop line up of talent on the docket, there’s a sound to suit every taste!
  • Festive Drinks & Food – Not sure which libations to sample first? Craving something delicious and green? Pick up a Mighty St. Patrick’s Passport to find out what’s on the menu. From Irish Cream Coffee at Forty Thirst Street (get a free sample during event hours!) to St. Patrick’s Mickey Mouse apples at Candy Cauldron, your palette will be delighted. For true Irish fare, don’t miss Raglan Road, or for a quicker bite, sample the Fisherman’s Pie (a dish from the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival) at the Superstar Catering Food Truck.
  • Family Fun – It is easy being green with the Mighty Family Fun Zone presented by “Muppets Most Wanted” where guests of all ages can learn to draw Muppets friends, show off their best moves at a DJ Dance Party and take part in games, giveaways and special photo ops. Plus, with dance workshops, stilt walkers and face-painting, there’s more to be found here than at the end of the rainbow!

For more information, visit www.disneyworld.com/St.PatricksFestival. Attending the event? Be sure to tag your photos with #MightyFestival to spread the Irish fun – we’ll be doing the same via the Downtown Disney Twitter handle, @WDWDowntown.

Here’s to our mightiest St. Patrick’s Celebration yet – I hope to see you there!

Spotlight on Disney Centerpiece Coming to Marketplace Co-Op at Downtown Disney Marketplace in 2014

posted on March 4th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

MCO994411

Today, I’m beginning a series of articles that will highlight the six boutiques coming to the Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort. You may recall last November that we announced this location that will serve as a testing space for new Disney retail concepts, shops and products. The first boutique I’m showcasing today is Disney Centerpiece, which will contain home products for guests who want a splash of Disney in their everyday lives. I spoke with Dana Harchar from the Global Retail Development team about the hand-crafted display fixtures you will find in this location once the shop opens in a couple of months.

MCO994412THUMB MCO994413THUMB

“Disney Centerpiece will have an eclectic mix of display fixtures for the merchandise,” explained Dana. “The neutral color fixtures will have a well-loved and repurposed feel. I chose a few accent colors that complement some merchandise created for this shop. Hand-made Hoosier cabinets will line the exposed brick walls. My teammate Bert McCumber printed three-dimensional models that we shared with the store operations team and other cast members working on this shop.”

The smaller fixture model shown above that resembles bench swings stacked on crates will house new decorative pillows. While speaking with Dana in her office, she showed me the computer image she created to determine exactly how many pillows that fixture will hold (she even included miniature Orange Bird pillows – awesome!).

MCO994414

The merchandise coming to this location looks amazing; it’s like they pulled these things directly from my brain!

MCO994415

There is an entire new collection of goods inspired by Adventureland and Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room. I love the ceramic Orange Bird figure and the miniature ceramic Dole Whips! The home décor team also made several small plates containing artwork with my favorite word, “Aloha!”

MCO994417THUMB MCO994416THUMB

Several attraction posters from Disney Parks will be included on glassware, small plates and coasters.

Finally, there will be an entire line of retro-inspired merchandise featuring some of the themed lands found at Disneyland park in California or Magic Kingdom Park in Florida. I love the salt and pepper shakers that resemble ride vehicles from the Mad Tea Party attraction.

Look for these items and more when Disney Centerpiece opens at the Marketplace Co-Op in a couple of months. Select items will also be carried on our Disney Parks online store at a future date.

Which items are your favorites? Please share in the “Comments” below.

Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant at Downtown Disney Epicenter of St. Pat’s Celebrations

posted on February 25th, 2014 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer

For the real deal, the celebration at Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant at Downtown Disney West Side begins on March 7, a full 10 days before the official St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. That’s plenty of time to eat, drink, dance and do it all over again.

Nine different bands, pro dancers and some of the best Irish food make every day worth stopping by – the fun goes from 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. March 7 – 14, then cranks from noon – 1 a.m. March 15 – 17 for a weekend of revelry. Check out raglanroad.com for details.

Food is a highlight, so look for one or more of the four Disney Food Trucks (Fantasy Fare, Namaste Café, Superstar Catering and World Showcase of Flavors) serving delicious eats, including a St. Patrick’s Day cupcake, and Fisherman’s Pie, a favorite from the Ireland kiosk at the Epcot International Food & Wine Festival (at the Superstar Catering truck).

PSL083653

Raglan Road favorites are on the restaurant’s lunch and dinner menus, along with beers on tap. For a quick bite, stop at Cooke’s of Dublin for fish and chips, battered sausages or deep-fried candy bars. The other Downtown Disney restaurants are joining the fun with St. Pat’s fare too.

On the big day March 17, seating is first-come, first-served basis with a cover charge of $10 for each guest age 18 and older. Reservations can be booked for other festival days by calling 407-938-0300. For more information visit Disneyworld.com/StPatricksDay.

Chef Kevin Dundon’s new Raglan Road cookbook, “I’d Ate the Back Door Buttered Ma” is the perfect souvenir, with classics like this traditional loin of bacon with cabbage and potatoes. That title, by the way, is a Dublin phrase that translates as “hey, mom, I’m starving!”
Happy St. Pat’s!

Even Stars ‘Strike’ It Big With Family Time at Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Downtown Disney

posted on February 19th, 2014 by Darcy Clark, Marketing Manager, Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

How does a Hollywood power couple enjoy their downtime? Well, if you’re Ed Burns and Christy Turlington, you spend an afternoon at Splitsville Luxury Lanes with an extended group of friends and family.

I had a chance to meet up with the duo over the weekend; within minutes of arriving, their son, Finn, had scored a strike and a sized-for-sharing platter of Splitsville’s sushi arrived at their table. “This is really good,” gushed the supermodel. She sounded surprised; I wasn’t … Splitsville’s food is one of the things that sets the venue apart from other bowling alleys. That, and the fact that it’s truly family-friendly. With a party of 16, the group called ahead to reserve bowling lanes – there was space for everyone to kick back and relax, and plenty of opportunity for a little friendly competition and a lot of laughter.
Even Stars ‘Strike’ It Big, With Family Time at Splitsville Luxury Lanes at Downtown Disney

“This family time is really important to us. We’re here at Walt Disney World Resort for our daughter’s gymnastics competition, but we decided to extend the trip and make a real vacation out of it” shared Ed. Christy nodded in agreement, “We left a really cold winter in New York, so this is great!”

Even though Christy admitted “I’m not a great bowler,” she looked like a natural. And though I didn’t stick around to see the final scores, Ed expected that he and his brother would “go at it” on the lanes! The couple took a moment to sign a special bowling pin for the Splitsville team to commemorate the few fun hours they spent there.

With cousins, best friends, siblings (Ed’s brother, Brian, is married to Christy’s sister, Kelly!), and kids in tow, it was the first time the group visited Downtown Disney, but hopefully not the last.

So, have you been to Splitsville? Food, bowling or something else … what’s your favorite part of the “Luxury Lanes” experience? I’d love to hear in the “Comments” section below!
