Soccer Scores the Spotlight at United World Soccer at Downtown Disney West Side

posted on June 12th, 2014 by Darcy Clark, Marketing Manager, Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

All eyes are on Brazil as the FIFA World Cup kicks off today (pun totally intended). With 32 teams competing in the biggest single-event sporting competition in the world, soccer will take center stage over the next month.

Here at Downtown Disney West Side, one of the newest venues, United World Soccer, can help you score all your fútbol must-haves. With jerseys representing the most popular teams, a variety of cleats and gear, and even the official FIFA World Cup soccer ball available for purchase, this new retail location has what you need to make the most of this worldwide phenomenon.

Here’s a look at what you can expect inside the shop:

worldc930001

I’ve got a few friends who are soccer-obsessed, so there’s a good chance you’ll find me hunkered down at one of the many Walt Disney World Resort venues showing the games. You can see the full list of confirmed viewing locations here. Additionally, look for the biggest match-ups at select Downtown Disney locations – Splitsville will be a sure bet, with its many large-screen TVs and full-service bars.

No matter how you plan to celebrate the World Cup, my advice is to pick up a jersey at United World Soccer before you cheer on your favorite team.

So? Any early predictions on who will win the whole thing? Share your thoughts in the comments below. (I’m already chanting U-S-A, U-S-A …)

New Clowns Bring Big Laughs to ‘La Nouba’ by Cirque du Soleil at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on June 10th, 2014 by Darcy Clark, Marketing Manager, Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

“Were you born funny, or is it something you’ve had to work at?” That’s one of the questions I asked the new clown act at “La Nouba” by Cirque du Soleil. Both named Pablo, the duo didn’t hesitate. “Orange Pablo” shared, “Everybody’s born funny. But if you want to be funny onstage, you have to work. You have to work on the timing of jokes and get a feel for what the audience needs.” “Purple Pablo” chimed in, “It’s genetics, your soul and hard work.” I had the chance to see their performance over the weekend and I’ll tell you this … it didn’t look like they were working at all. They were having far too much fun, and so was the audience.

One of my favorite sounds at Cirque is the pure, unfiltered laughter that comes from the younger kids in the crowd. I heard plenty of that at the show. And already, Pablo and Pablo have gotten fan mail from a dad sharing that he’d never heard his son laugh so much. I think we can all agree that we’ve got a hit on our hands! The new clowns bring a fresh energy to the show, so even if you’ve seen “La Nouba” in the past, well, you haven’t seen it quite like this!

When I asked the Pablos how their performance differs from other clown acts, they didn’t hesitate. They talked about their great respect for Balto and Sergey, their “La Nouba” predecessors, and they also acknowledged their take was much different. “They were like jazz. We’re more ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ with a very fast rhythm. We’re like two kids mocking each other.” Having seen both versions of the show, I think it’s a great analogy. And while I don’t want to give too much away, I’ll share this tidbit: I’ve never seen anyone make piñatas and paper airplanes so entertaining.

The Pablos had some advice for future show-goers: “Arrive early. Forty-five minutes before start time to get a good parking spot and at least 15-minutes early to see our first act. From there, just sit down, relax and enjoy – it’s a wonderful show.”

CLOWNleadSMALL

Want to experience “La Nouba” for yourself? Next week a special offer hits the market, but Disney Parks Blog readers can book early here.

And though I can’t spill all the details yet, keep an eye out for new news coming from Cirque du Soleil this summer when they debut an all-new offering. (Hint: it’s going to be behind-the-scenes and amazing!)

So … have you seen “La Nouba” by Cirque du Soleil? If so, let me know what you love most about the show in the comments below.

Alex and Ani Add ‘Character’ to the Disney Parks Collection

posted on June 3rd, 2014 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

UPDATE 6/4: Exciting news Disney fans! We actually just got news that the Disney Collection by Alex and Ani bangles just arrived!  Look for them starting today at the locations listed below.

I adore Alex and Ani bangles from Disney Parks! Curious as to what Alex and Ani is all about? Before I started collecting them, I was too.

Carolyn Rafaelian, Founder, Creative Director and Chief Executive Officer of Alex and Ani, hails from a family of jewelers where mastering their craft was not only an aspiration, but a family tradition. For more than 10 years, the lifestyle company, named after her first two daughters, has helped spread positive energy across the globe with its hand-crafted, eco-conscious and Made in America products. The Alex and Ani Disney Collection, featuring signature expandable (yes, they are adjustable for the perfect fit) wire bangles with Disney icons and characters are truly the perfect combination of pixie dust and positive energy.

Alex and Ani Add ‘Character’ to the Disney Parks Collection

How could the collection, currently made up of more than eight different Disney symbols, birthstones and initials, get any better? Perhaps something to complement the Disneyland park Sleeping Beauty Castle and Magic Kingdom Park Cinderella Castle bangles? New bangles with signature icon charms inspired by Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Epcot and Disney’s Hollywood Studios will debut at Walt Disney World Resort beginning June 5. Joining that list in late June is Mickey’s Fun Wheel from Disney California Adventure park.

AAH706592

Or if, like me, you choose to embrace your Disney Side and live your life full of character, take note of what I’m about to show you. Also debuting June 5 is the one and only Tinker Bell, as well as a Dated 2014 bangle.
AAH706593

Something else to keep on your radar are new bangles, featuring Aurora, Belle and Cinderella, releasing June 30 online and at Disney Parks.

Are you as excited as I am? Then be sure to check back to learn about even more additions to the Disney Collection by Alex and Ani. I know you want me to tell you now, but where’s the fun in that? If I have to wait, so do you!

A fashion essential, these Alex and Ani bangles, available in both Rafaelian Gold and Rafaelian Silver finishes are the ideal keepsake for fans of all ages and are sure to evoke magical memories for years to come!

Tip: You can wear just one, or layer them together, truly making the look your very own.

So where are the best places to find them?

Gift Ideas from Walt Disney World Resort for Father’s Day 2014

posted on June 2nd, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

I love being a dad to my two amazing children. I enjoyed taking them to Disney Parks throughout the years much in the same way my father enjoying taking my sister and me when we were younger. With Father’s Day just around the corner, I figured I’d share a few gift ideas from a recent visit to Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort. While I’d never ask for gifts (their smiles are the perfect gifts for me), I would consider some of the items to be on my wish list.

FDG806583

The Disney pin team is releasing a limited edition pin, featuring Pongo and some puppies from Walt Disney’s “101 Dalmatians.” This pin has an edition size of 2,500, and will be released in multiple locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts on June 12 (hey, that’s my father’s birthday so happy birthday, Dad).

FDG806584

I was delighted to find a new graphic novel featuring one of my favorite attractions, Space Mountain. This recently released book was written by Bryan Miller (no relation) and illustrated by Kelley Jones. In a word, it’s super amazing (okay, that’s two words but I’m excited there is a graphic novel from Disney).

I was also excited to find more Disney Parks replica signs at the Art of Disney location including one for The Great Movie Ride attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I also love the Steampunk-inspired locomotive from the Mechanical Kingdom series released a few months ago. That item is now available on our Disney Parks online store along with the other figurines in that series.

FDG806585

I’ve been in the market for a watch, so a new Disney timepiece by Bulova at World of Disney caught my eye. In that shop, I also found a new Mr. Incredible T-shirt (because dads are pretty incredible) and a fun fedora (I love hats!).

FDG806586

Finally, I’m obsessed with coffee so I adore these three mugs inspired by Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park, the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Spaceship Earth at Epcot.

Happy Father’s Day!
