10 Things Not to Do on a Disney Cruise

posted on August 26th, 2015 by Jonathan Frontado, Disney Cruise Line

The recipe for a great Disney cruise is pretty simple: show up, relax and have fun! But there are some other things you’ll want to make sure you do right so your family can have the ultimate Disney vacation. Take it from me, someone who has cruised many, many times with Disney, here are ten things not to do on a Disney cruise …

lob143285

  1. Carry your own luggage onboard. We’ll do it for you! Whether you arrive to the cruise terminal on Disney Cruise Line transportation or in your own vehicle, we offer services that keep you from having to lug your suitcases onto the ship. Just bring aboard a day bag with your personal items, and we’ll deliver your luggage to your stateroom in the afternoon.
  2. Live out of your suitcase. Our staterooms are designed with families in mind and offer lots of storage space, including a place to tuck away your suitcases. One of the perks of cruising is visiting multiple destinations and only unpacking once, so make yourselves at home on the first day by assigning closet space and drawers to each member of the family.
  3. Clean your stateroom. As difficult as it may be to break your daily habits, now’s the time to try! Forget about making the bed each morning, and don’t worry about washing your towels and taking out the trash. Our stateroom hosts are there to make your stay as pleasant as possible, and if there’s anything you need, just ask.

  1. Introduce yourself to your dining servers each night. Your serving team stays with you as you visit different restaurants and enjoy new menus each night. That means only one round of introductions are needed. And chances are their personalized service and hospitality will make your servers unforgettable.
  2. Miss out on time for yourself. It’s your vacation, too! Activities for families to do together are endless on a Disney cruise, but there’s also no shortage of fun just for adults. The kids clubs are supervised by trained counselors and have the longest operating hours at sea, so there’s no excuse for parents to not take advantage of adult-only dining and other experiences.

  1. Worry about your kids in the youth spaces. See number five. We have the most extensive youth activity spaces of any cruise line, with age-specific areas and interactive programs to entertain children up to 17 years old. Getting your kids to leave the kids clubs may be the one challenge of your cruise.
  2. Throw away the Navigator. Your only excuse for tossing this daily activity guide is if you already downloaded the Navigator app on your smart phone. With so many activities happening throughout your cruise, you’ll want Navigator info handy at all times. It gives you the scoop on what’s happening every minute of every day and even categorizes the fun for kids, adults and families.

  1. Watch our fireworks at sea through your camera lens. This show is so spectacular that it’s completely understandable you’ll want to capture every moment on your camera. Resist the urge and just enjoy the moment! If you take your eyes off the fireworks, it should only be to glance over at the smiles on your family’s faces.
  2. Head back to the ship for lunch while at Castaway Cay. We’re the only cruise line that docks at its own private island, so it’s easy to go back on the ship throughout your day at Castaway Cay. But if you want to maximize beach time, head to one of three all-you-care-to-eat lunch buffets served under the shade of the island’s covered pavilions.
  3. Explore destinations on your own. Port Adventures are the best way for your family to have an unforgettable experience ashore. Along with the peace of mind that comes with having all the planning done for you, we offer one-of-a-kind activities that you can only experience through Disney. Many excursions even offer just-for-kids components, so parents have a little time alone.

Animation Artist Dazzles Disney Vacation Club Members

posted on August 26th, 2015 by Ryan March, Editor, Disney Vacation Club’s Disney Files Magazine

To see artwork materialize right before your eyes is to appreciate a craft like never before.

That’s the experience Disney Vacation Club Members just enjoyed during their Member Cruise charter voyage aboard the Disney Dream ship. As part of an exclusive show titled “Artists at Work,” Walt Disney Animation Studios Visual Development Artist, Lorelay Bové, swiftly created (and later gave away) a character painting while sharing stories of her blossoming career live on stage.

Lorelay interned at Pixar Animation Studios before transitioning to the Visual Development Department at Walt Disney Animation Studios, where her credits now include work on the theatrical features “The Princess and the Frog,” “Tangled,” “Winnie the Pooh,” Wreck-It Ralph” and “Big Hero 6“; the shorts “The Ballad of Nessie,” “Tangled Ever After” and “Frozen Fever”; and the hit holiday series “Prep and Landing.” Up next for Lorelay is “Gigantic”, the recently announced 2018 Walt Disney Animation Studios feature set in Spain, where Lorelay was born.

The painting Lorelay created for Disney Vacation Club Members on stage reflects the distinctive style she employed in her classically conceived cover art for Walt Disney Records’ The Legacy Collection, an ongoing series of 12 albums celebrating milestone anniversaries of some of Disney’s most cherished creations. Lorelay’s illustrations honor Disney’s rich heritage while creating a unified look for the entire collection, which features beloved original soundtracks along with insightful documentary content that tells the story behind the music.

As Variety magazine recently named Lorelay one of the “10 Animators to Watch” – and as we at Disney Vacation Club always do what industry magazines tell us – we focused our camera on Lorelay’s on-stage work to give you this unique, time-lapse view of an extraordinary artist at work. Enjoy!

Creative Forces Set Sail With Disney Vacation Club

posted on August 26th, 2015 by Ryan March, Editor, Disney Vacation Club’s Disney Files Magazine

Greetings from beautiful Castaway Cay, where Disney Vacation Club Members have taken over the island! (Not by force, mind you. They were invited.)

Only months removed from our recent charter voyage to Alaska, Disney Vacation Club has traded white glaciers for white sands, going from the Klondike to the Caribbean and returning to the friendly confines of Disney’s private paradise for a rare second Member Cruise of the year. This typically once-a-year event has long been a highlight on many Members’ calendars, enhancing the already extraordinary Disney Cruise Line experience with custom décor, in-room gifts, and a diverse lineup of special shows and experiences created just for Members and their guests.

Our special-entertainment lineup of more than a dozen unique experiences is the first in Member Cruise history to feature presentations from each of the three creative forces most requested by our Member community: Walt Disney Imagineering, Walt Disney Animation Studios and Pixar Animation Studios.

Continuing a Member Cruise tradition, we kicked off our voyage with the dramatic reveal of our lineup through a mock movie trailer that debuted on the Disney Dream ship’s giant Funnel Vision screen as we sailed out of Port Canaveral.

I’ll leave you to enjoy the trailer while I get to the next important item on my agenda. As a movie-trailer narrator would say, “In a world where ‘work’ is a relative term, one magazine editor boldly searches for an open hammock!”

Looking Back at D23 EXPO 2015 Disney Theme Park Merchandise

posted on August 21st, 2015 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

I know that many of you, our Disney fans, were with us all weekend long at D23 EXPO 2015 in Anaheim, Calif. I mean what an experience, am I right? New film releases, new attraction and lands announced and of course, merchandise!

Those of you who attended the 60 Years of Disney Theme Park Merchandise panel discussion were in for quite a surprise as we took a look at the evolution of ear hats, new artwork set to appear on Twenty-Eight & Main, Disney Boutique, Disney Couture, Princess, Haunted Mansion – Revisited and Pirates of the Caribbean. Of course, it was the What Lies Ahead segment that caught the attention of some folks, with merchandise art reveals for the Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, Disneyland Paris, Hong Kong Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Resort, Disney Cruise Line, Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, and of course, Shanghai Disney Resort. Here’s a quick glimpse at some of the art that was shown and be sure to keep watching the Disney Parks Blog, as I will have posts about all of these and more in the near future.

D23ME47971

With the panel also came the world debut of the artists taking part in the We Love Disney compilation album by Verve Records and Walt Disney Records, due in stores October 30. Produced by multi-platinum, 16-time Grammy award winning producer and Verve Music Group Chairman, David Foster, the album will feature some of today’s hottest artists across pop, rock, R&B and country as they deliver their own interpretations of classic Disney songs. I could go on and on about who is featured on this album but why don’t you check it out for yourself including the We Love Disney Box Set here.

D23ME47972

The spectrum was broad when it came to finding favorite souvenirs, as there was literally something for everyone. D23 EXPO merchandise, from t-shirts to mugs, handbags to drinkware, flew off the shelves, and of course the R4-D23 was definitely the droid everyone was looking for, and Force For Change t-shirts, fleece and pins weren’t far behind. Tip: Look for Force For Change apparel shortly at select locations at the Disneyland Resort through Labor Day and help us make a difference! If you have the D23 EXPO App, go to Aurasma and watch as the shirt activates before your very eyes.

D23ME47333

What did I find? With ALEX AND ANI on hand, it’s no surprise that I spotted my souvenir at their table. While I almost picked up the new Snow White-inspired bangle, available at Disney Parks now, I chose to go a bit simpler with the Mickey Filigree Wrap in the Rafaelian Silver finish. I know you’re shocked! This is one of three pieces ALEX AND ANI pre-launched at D23 that won’t be available in the parks until the fall.

Finally, throughout the weekend, Disney fans were lined up to meet some of their favorite Disney Legends, artists, authors and special guests and the Disney Dream Store did not disappoint. More than 45 special guests and 80 signings took place over the course of the weekend, including a special appearance and signing with the Mouseketeers!

Who were you most excited to meet? What was your favorite part of D23 EXPO 2015?

Disney Cruise Line Kicks off this Summer’s Mediterranean Sailings

posted on August 10th, 2015 by Peter Hofer, Cruise Director, Disney Cruise Line

Greetings from the Disney Magic! Yet again we’re having another fantastic summer in Europe. If you followed along on Cruise Director Brent’s voyage report in June, you know we started out the season in Northern Europe, sailing through the Baltic and, for the first time ever, the Norwegian fjords. Now, we’re kicking off this summer’s cruises in Southern Europe – around the sun-soaked Mediterranean!

Today we arrived in Barcelona, our homeport for the next several weeks as we take Disney cruisers to incredible ports in Spain, Italy and France. It’s my fourth time as Cruise Director during our Mediterranean sailings, and I’m still just as excited as every Disney cruiser joining us! We’ll have the chance to explore famous locales near the coast like Rome, Tuscany, Florence, Pisa, Monte Carlo and more.

If you’re joining us this month, make sure to say hello onboard. Until then, here’s a look at some of our photos from past seasons, giving you a glimpse at what Disney cruisers will experience this summer and next in the Mediterranean …
