Making Plans for New Year’s Eve at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on November 24th, 2014 by Shawn Slater, Communications Manager, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment

It may still be November, but I bet many of you are already thinking ahead and starting to make plans for New Year’s Eve. Well, if you’re going to be ringing in 2015 at Walt Disney World Resort, here’s a rundown of some of the entertainment we have planned for this year’s celebration.

0715BZ_1771GV38058136-742x380

  • Epcot – It’s a night-long party throughout Epcot, with unique entertainment including a DJ and light show at the Future World Fountain Stage, dancing under flame effects and a smoke-billowing dragon in China, a British blast to the past in United Kingdom, Euro-pop and lasers in Italy, and a Latin band and DJ on the America Gardens Stage. Cap it all off with one of two showings of “IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth” fireworks, at 6:00 p.m. or 11:40 p.m., followed by a countdown and pyrotechnic salute to the new year.
  • Disney’s Hollywood Studios – Exclusive specialty drinks and food items are available throughout the night, as the Event Stage comes alive with an energetic DJ and performances by Mulch, Sweat & Shears. As midnight approaches, the band takes the stage to count down to 2015 and plays live during a jaw-dropping fireworks spectacular.
  • Magic Kingdom Park – You can get a head start on the festivities, with a special New Year’s Eve eve presentation of “Fantasy in the Sky” fireworks at 11:50 p.m. on Tuesday, December 30. The same show will be repeated on December 31.

So tell me … what are you doing New Year’s Eve?

Vintage Walt Disney World: Earffel Tower

posted on November 20th, 2014 by Nate Rasmussen, Archivist, Marketing Resource Center

Soaring 130 feet into the air with a 32,000 lb. set of Mouse Ears, the Earffel Tower has been home to Disney’s Hollywood Studios since its opening. In November 1987, the park’s logo still hadn’t been painted on the side while construction carried on around it.

While the Earffel Tower is not used to hold water, it was inspired by the working water tower in Burbank, Calif. landmark at the Disney Studios since 1939.

Retail MagicBands and Other Popular Holiday Gift Ideas from Disney Parks

posted on November 19th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

I recently shared with you some of my favorite holiday-themed gifts from Disney Parks. This time, I’m highlighting other popular gift ideas that caught my attention.

01_ParksBlog_TopGifts2014_MagicBand

Retail MagicBands and Accessories – We now offer select retail MagicBands and accessories on our Disney Parks online store at DisneyStore.com/MagicBand. I’m also delighted to share that the “link-it later” option is now available for graphic MagicBands at Walt Disney World Resort. This means that any retail MagicBand, whether purchased online or at Disney Parks, can now be given as gifts since they can be linked to a valid theme park admission at a future date. See this Disney Parks Blog article for more details about how Link-It Later works.

02_ParksBlog_TopGifts2014_MadeWithMagic

Made With Magic – Guests can find an ear hat, a Minnie Mouse headband and, my favorite, a Sorcerer Mickey wand (arriving November 21) that light up and interact with select Disney nighttime experiences at Disney Parks. Please note the aforementioned Mickey Mouse glove will arrive in spring 2015.

03_ParksBlog_TopGifts2014_FrozenMerch

Merchandise from Disney’s “Frozen – From dresses inspired by Anna and Elsa to fun toys and dolls, you can find all sorts of merchandise from Disney’s “Frozen” in Disney Parks’ locations such as Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I particularly like the decorative shoe ornaments or the Olaf hat.

04_ParksBlog_TopGifts2014_VeraBradley

Disney Parks Collection By Vera Bradley – Known for their stylish quilted cotton luggage, handbags and accessories, Vera Bradley has been infusing color into all aspects of women’s lives for more than 30 years. We carry several colors in a variety of styles created especially for Disney Parks. Look for them on our online store or in locations such as Cherry Tree Lane at Downtown Disney Marketplace in Florida.

05_ParksBlog_TopGifts2014_Tagalong

Disney Tagalongs – I first discussed Disney Tagalongs during the 24-hour Rock Your Disney Side Party in May. These small character toys, such as Jiminy Cricket or Yoda, are easily added to your shoulder using a magical, magnetic power disc.

06_ParksBlog_TopGifts2014_Infinity

Disney Infinity 2.0 – Guests have endless opportunities to create stories and fun-filled adventures with all-new characters and powers in Disney Infinity 2.0. The best place to find all things related to this game at Walt Disney World Resort is Once Upon a Toy in Downtown Disney Marketplace. You can also find items on line at DisneyStore.com/DisneyInfinity.

07_ParksBlog_TopGifts2014_DTech

D-Tech Electronic Accessories – Add a splash of Disney to you electronic accessories with D-Tech. Guests can create customized and personalized phone cases including cases for iPhone 6 at D-Tech on Demand in the Marketplace Co-Op at Downtown Disney Marketplace in Florida. Cases for iPhone 6+ and Samsung Galaxy S5 will be available in late November. I also love the battery power bars which give extra boosts for your mobile devices.

Puzzles and Games – As a child, my parents always gave me some kind of game for Christmas. I like the new 1000-piece Disney Signature Puzzles or the Disney Theme Park Edition of Jenga featuring the Hollywood Tower Hotel.

Look for these items in select merchandise locations at Disney Parks. You can also find additional items for the holidays by visiting the Disney Parks online store – DisneyParks.com/Store.

What’s This? Jack Skellington Brings a Touch of Christmastown to Walt Disney World Resort for the Holidays

posted on November 7th, 2014 by Shawn Slater, Communications Manager, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment

Fans of “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” have even more to grin about this holiday season.

SCJ708423

The Pumpkin King himself, Jack Skellington, has decided to join the holiday celebration at Walt Disney World Resort by dropping in on Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at Magic Kingdom Park. Head back to Storybook Circus during the party, and you’ll find Jack making Christmas as “Sandy Claws” – just don’t count on any gifts from him turning out quite right.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party, which is separate from regular Magic Kingdom Park admission, starts tonight and continues on select nights through December 19.

Meanwhile over at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, there’s color everywhere and white things in the air as the 2014 season of The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights returns to the park’s Streets of America tonight.

This year, the song “What’s This?” from “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” has been added to the show, bringing with it all the wonder and delight Jack Skellington experienced upon first visiting Christmastown. “What’s This?” joins such favorites as “Feliz Navidad” by Jose Feliciano and “Christmas Is Starting Now” by Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on the playlist of holiday songs for the dancing lights.

The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights is presented nightly through January 4, 2015 (except November 20), and is included with regular admission to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Stars of ‘Big Hero 6′ Are Ready for Their Disney Parks Debut

posted on November 6th, 2014 by Shawn Slater, Communications Manager, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Creative Entertainment

Hiro Hamada and his buddy, a huggable robot named Baymax, are flying into theaters in 3D on Friday in Disney’s new comedy adventure, “Big Hero 6.” And starting this weekend, you’ll be able to see them in person at Disney Parks!

HAB446934

At Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World Resort, look for Hiro and Baymax inside The Magic of Disney Animation attraction, where you’ll find recreations of Hiro’s garage workshop and the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology labs seen in the film. When Hiro and his robot companion head west to the Disneyland Resort, you’ll find them in Tomorrowland near the Starcade and Magic Eye Theater, where you can also catch a special exclusive sneak peek of “Big Hero 6.”

I caught an early preview of “Big Hero 6” myself, and I can tell you the film is fantastic! I can’t wait to take my kids to see it this weekend. They recently got some of the toys for their birthday, and I’m sure we’ll be out at the park soon to spend time with their new favorite characters.

Recipe Just in Time for Holidays from The Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

posted on November 5th, 2014 by Pam Brandon, Disney Parks Food Writer

‘Tis the season for parties and sharing indulgent bites, from savory to sweet. This is one of our favorites from The Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where Pastry Chef Andreas Born works his magic with chocolate, toffee and bananas – a trifecta of deliciousness.

The Hollywood Brown Derby is tops for dining at the theme park, with an all-day menu featuring original creations such as blue lump crab springs rolls, Scotch maple-glazed Loch Duart Salmon and pan-seared, coriander-crusted black grouper. But you can also get a simple grilled burger (it just happens to be Wagyu beef and topped with a fried egg) and the ever-classic Cobb Salad, made from the same recipe as the original in Hollywood, California.

Watch Chef Andreas create this beautiful and tasty sweet finish – he tops with fancy bites, but you can rest assured it’s just as delicious without. It take a little time to make the mousse, but the result is worth it.

For reservations at The Hollywood Brown Derby Restaurant, call 407-WDW-DINE or visit disneyworld.com.

Banana Toffee Mousse on Cocoa Crunch
Serves 12

  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon powdered gelatin
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 1/2 medium bananas, peeled and mashed
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 12 tablespoons crushed chocolate cookies
  • 1/2 cup chocolate-covered toffee pieces
  1. Place white chocolate chips in a heatproof bowl set over a small saucepan of simmering water, making sure bottom of bowl does not touch water. Melt chocolate, stirring frequently. Remove from heat and set aside.
  2. Place eggs, egg yolks, and sugar in double boiler over simmering water; whisk for 4 minutes and remove from heat.
  3. Sprinkle gelatin over hot water in a small bowl and set aside for 5 minutes. Microwave 10 seconds, stirring gelatin until melted. Set aside.
  4. Beat eggs and sugar together in the bowl of an electric mixer until fluffy. Stir in gelatin mixture, then mashed bananas. Fold in melted white chocolate.
  5. Whip heavy cream to soft peaks in a separate large bowl. Gently fold whipped cream into banana mixture to create mousse. Divide mixture in half.
  6. Spoon 1 tablespoon chocolate cookie crumbs in the bottom of 12 1/2-cup ramekins. Evenly top each with half of mousse. Add thin layer of toffee pieces. Repeat process with remaining mousse.
  7. Refrigerate at least 2 hours before serving.
