Live Entertainment Takes the Stage at Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on July 30th, 2015 by Darcy Clark, Marketing Manager, Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World Resort

As Downtown Disney continues to transform into Disney Springs, shopping, dining and entertainment are still at the forefront of all we do here. Lately, the latter is stealing the spotlight in a big way!

In a typical week, up to twenty different acts take the stage, performing roughly 300 sets. Whether you fancy freestyle rap, delight to the notes of the didgeridoo, or prefer to sway to the sounds of a sultry saxophone, chances are, you can find it at Downtown Disney.

I spend most of my time here during the daylight hours, and although I know we have an incredibly full talent lineup, even I was surprised by how much live music I encountered throughout the West Side during my latest nighttime visit to the property. On most evenings, the West Side comes alive with musical flair by 6:30 p.m.

Visiting earlier? At the Marketplace, performances start at 12:30 p.m. daily near Dockside Margaritas. I recently saw one of my favorites, Pat Frost, a master who mixes steel drums, the ukulele and conch shells (yes, conch shells!) to create a unique sound that you won’t find anywhere else at Walt Disney World Resort.

If carefree island music isn’t for you, fear not … at this locale, you can also hear everything from pop hits to new age world music. Entertainment Manager Jenni Kloote Quick shared, “we look for musicians with a fun, laid back vibe. We want them to have an inviting attitude and welcome guests to stay and enjoy the great combination of world-class music and gorgeous water views.”

No matter what your style – classical, Latin rock, or Top 40 tunes – it’s here!

Who’s your favorite act at Downtown Disney? Share in the comments below … I’d love to know!

How the years have zoomed by. We are celebrating the 16th anniversary of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster this week!

Artist Jeff Maurer on our team took the exhilaration of the ride and turned it into a rockin’ neon rendition of a wall paper. Enjoy!

New Look and Products Found in Rock Around the Shop at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

posted on July 30th, 2015 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

Disney’s Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith celebrates another anniversary this week. This super fast attraction originally opened in 1999 at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I still recall my first ride with my father during that summer many years ago. Recently, I stopped by Rock Around the Shop, the merchandise location found at the attraction, to check out the latest rockin’ products.

Periodically, our location planning and merchandise presentation teams make adjustments to merchandise shops. There are a variety of reasons for these changes including testing new products or improving visual statements. The last time I wrote about this location was in April 2013 (see this Disney Parks Blog article). For this latest incarnation, gone are the giant “Rockin’ Gear” graphics which were replaced with images of audio speakers and other vibrant graphic patterns.

The shop also has a few new items not previously offered including an art gallery featuring the works of Jerrod Maruyama (I’m a big fan of his hipster Mickey art). There is also an expanded line of women’s apparel and accessories.

The shop still offers various Aerosmith and attraction T-shirts and accessories for women and men.

Finally, the location now carries headphones by SMS Audio, the official headphones of Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

Happy anniversary to my favorite super stretch limousine!

A Unique Point of View: ‘Storytellers’ Statue at Disney California Adventure Park

posted on July 29th, 2015 by Erin Glover, Social Media Director, Disneyland Resort

I love the “Storytellers” statue on Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure park. You can walk right up and stand beside a young Walt Disney and his pal, Mickey Mouse, as if they’re just two more dreamers making their way around 1920s Los Angeles.

Do you know what time it is? It’s time for the next release in the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration “Decades” collection! Not too long ago, I shared the art that would appear during the celebration, but here’s your first look at some of the merchandise featuring the 1965–1974 artwork. Be sure to check out the new collection starting July 30 at select locations throughout the Disneyland Resort. Tip: If you haven’t had a chance to collect the first set of items in the “Decades” program, there’s still time. But don’t wait – items are in limited supply.

Cruising with Little Ones: Q&A with a Mom

posted on July 29th, 2015 by Jonathan Frontado, Disney Cruise Line

Over the last few weeks, I’ve shared information about taking a Disney cruise with young kids. A lot of that information has come from chatting with parents who have sailed with children under the age of five. One of my conversations was with Debbie, an avid Disney cruiser from Minneapolis.

A Home Away From Home at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa: 3-Bedroom Grand Villa

posted on July 28th, 2015 by Tyler Slater, Public Relations Manager, Disney Destinations

With an immediate family of 12, I personally understand what it’s like to vacation with a large ‘ohana. That’s why I like to recommend 3-Bedroom Grand Villas at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, for family vacations – the perfect retreat for everyone. My nieces and nephew can spend the day at Aunty’s Beach House while the adults relax beside the Wailana Pool. Then we can all convene for dinner in the Grand Villa before heading to the Starlit Hui. Today our “A Home Away From Home” series continues with a look inside these 3-Bedroom Grand Villas at Aulani – so perfect for multi-families or even reunions.
