Wildlife Wednesday: Update on the Wallaby Joey at Disney’s Animal Kingdom– ‘It’s a boy!’

posted on August 27th, 2014 by Andre Daneault, Animal Operations Manager

Earlier this year, we shared with you the exciting news of a wallaby joey that could be seen at the Oasis at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Now that the joey has grown a bit, we can share that “It’s a boy!” and his name is Ozzie. His first time coming out of his mom’s pouch was in April. He gradually spent more and more time out of the pouch and is now pretty independent. He is eating solid foods and currently weighs in at 2.3kg! (The weight range for adults is 4-9kg.)

If you are looking for Ozzie on your next visit to the park, he is most active during the cooler parts of the day, mornings and after late day rains. Wallabies are just one of the many interesting wildlife species that can be found at the Oasis Exhibits as you begin your adventure at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Be sure to also look for Giant Anteater, Babarusa (an exotic boar), Barking Deer, Spoonbill Stork and Macaws!!

Competition, Fun and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Difference Has Boston Team Hitting the Road to Disney

posted on August 26th, 2014 by Robert Hitchcock, PR Manager/Content Producer, runDisney

This Labor Day weekend, more than 700 athletes and coaches representing nine states, 5 countries from as far away as Japan, will hit the diamonds at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort for Disney Turn Back the Clock Weekend. For the 18th straight year, teams will enjoy international competition on the field and fun off the field in the parks, and at a private water park party at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park.

For teams like the Cambridge Hitmen, planning the “Road to Disney” started months ago. Team manager Ronnie Ferrara has led teams from Boston to the tournament for the past 14 years. “We have a lot of fun down there,” said Ferrara. “The Disney difference, they are wonderful down there, they treat everyone first class from the day you get there, they go over board trying to help. The fields are unbelievable.”

For the kids, it’s an opportunity to experience good competition and enjoy time with friends and teammates. “What’s great about the baseball is how good the competition is,” said catcher Samuel Olivet, who is making his second trip to the tournament. Rookie pitcher Elliot Harris said, “it seems like a vacation with one of my favorite things to do, which is play baseball.”

Recently, we caught up with the Hitmen on their home field in Cambridge, MA, as they practiced for their trip of a lifetime.

posted on August 26th, 2014 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

Over the weekend, Disney’s Hollywood Studios played host to Villains Unleashed, a special event in which 50 Disney villains (and many Disney fans) packed the park for some nighttime fun and special entertainment. The event kicked off at Hades Hangout, where several Disney villains were welcomed to the stage – including Shan Yu, Bowler Hat Guy, Captain Gantu, Oogie Boogie and many others. One fan favorite was Dr. Hämsterviel, who made his debut appearance at Walt Disney World Resort during this event!
