Lea Thompson Meets Mater in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park

posted on March 14th, 2013 by George Savvas, Public Relations Director, Disneyland Resort

Lea Thompson, who stars in the hit ABC Family series, “Switched at Birth,” stopped by recently to experience Cars Land at Disney California Adventure park with her family and friends. We caught up with her over at the Cozy Cone Motel, where Mater. was waiting to welcome her to Radiator Springs. It was hard for me to hear exactly what they were discussing, but I thought I heard something about Stanley and time travel

Then Lea’s daughter, actress Zoey Deutch, came over to get a picture with Mater. If Zoey looks familiar, you recognize her from her recurring role on a popular Disney Channel comedy that ended its run in 2011. Can you name the show? (Please, no cheating – time travel included.)

Moms Panel Monday: Start Your Engines at Disney California Adventure Park!

posted on March 4th, 2013 by Laura Spencer, Social Media Manager, Walt Disney World Resort

It’s hard to believe that less than a year ago, Disney Parks Moms Panelist Amanda Ficili and I were at Disneyland Resort filming a commercial in the not-yet-opened Cars Land. As we walked down the vacant Route 66 that morning, we were beyond giddy with excitement. In just a few days, the grand opening was planned and we were running on all pistons. Not far from that spot, Courtney Bautista was also giddy in anticipation for the park that would thrill her then 2-year-old moto-tot Mason.
“Disney

What a difference a year makes! Courtney’s dreams came true and she became our third Disney Parks Moms Panelist representing the Disneyland Resort. Now that Mason is turning three this summer, Courtney and her family have made it a must to visit Cars Land whenever they can.
“Disney

“From the moment we entered Cars Land, it was like stepping into the town of Radiator Springs. The look on Mason’s star-struck face when he spotted his favorite characters, Lightning McQueen and Tow Mater, was one I’ll never forget.”

Cars Land has become one of Courtney and Mason’s favorite places to visit at the Disneyland Resort, but for Courtney, it’s the snack fare that gets her motor revving.

“Every time we are there, the Disney foodie in me has to grab one of the tasty ‘cone-coctions‘ from the Cozy Cone Motel. My favorite? The dill pickle flavored popcorn.”

Courtney says the evenings are a great time to visit. “Cars Land is especially stunning at night. The countless colorful neon lights and the Cadillac Mountain Range in Ornament Valley truly look like the skyline of a bygone era. If you look carefully, you’ll notice that the six peaks of the mountain range represent Cadillac tail fins from 1957-1962!”

What is your favorite blast from the past at Cars Land?

By the Numbers: Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park

posted on January 21st, 2013 by Erin Glover, Social Media Director, Disneyland Resort

“Cars

Can you believe it’s been seven months since Cars Land opened at Disney California Adventure park? Since then, thousands of guests have cruised down Route 66, raced through Ornament Valley and (if they’re like me) downed quite a few Red’s Apple Freezes. At 12 acres, the size of Cars Land is enough to impress, but here are a few more numbers that might knock your socks off:

280,000 – Square feet of rockwork in Cars Land, making Ornament Valley mountain range the largest rockwork created in a domestic Disney theme park

125 – Height in feet at the tallest peak of Ornament Valley range

4,000 – Tons of steel used to construct the Ornament Valley range and Radiator Springs Racers

36,000 – Approximate number of miles per year each Radiator Springs Racers vehicle will travel, equivalent to more than 14 trips down the original Route 66

6,714 – Air vents keeping the tires flying at Luigi’s Flying Tires

525 – Approximate length, in feet, of the stretch of Route 66 that runs through Cars Land

70 – Species of native plants in Cars Land (including more than 450 trees and cactus)

16Neon signs in Cars Land, with the Flo’s V8 Café sign standing tallest at 27 feet

‘Destination: Cars Land’ Makes its Rose Parade Debut

posted on January 2nd, 2013 by Valarie Sukovaty, Disneyland Public Relations

Did you see our float, “Destination: Cars Land” in the 124th Rose Parade from Pasadena, Calif., yesterday? If not, you’re in luck because we have a video recap for you! The 125-foot-long float was a floral replica of Cars Land, the new land at Disney California Adventure park here at the Disneyland Resort, and it floated down Colorado Boulevard to the classic tune, “Get Your Kicks On Route 66.” From the thousands of volunteers to the thousands of flowers, seeds and foliage, everything seemed to go off without a hitch — until it broke down! Check it out.

Rose Parade Fans Floored by ‘Destination: Cars Land’ Float

posted on January 1st, 2013 by Erin Glover, Social Media Director, Disneyland Resort

Happy New Year! If you, like many across the country, like to start your new year watching the annual Rose Parade from Pasadena, Calif., you probably saw the Disneyland Resort “Destination: Cars Land” float this morning. I had the privilege to watch the parade myself from the stands along the parade route, and seeing our float in person was incredible. If you missed it, or if you just want a closer look, I’ve got photos to share with you from our chief photographer, Paul Hiffmeyer, who was also at the parade this morning.
“Disneyland

The float got off to a good start as it stepped off onto Orange Grove Blvd., but then …
“Disneyland

… it broke down! In a flash of sparks and smoke, it looked like the fun would be over. But Mater, who you can see following close behind in the photo above, was there to save the day! With a quick jump-start, Radiator Springs’ favorite tow truck had the float running good as new and on its way down the parade route!
“Disneyland

On board the float was Disney Channel “Shake It Up” star, Zendaya and DJ Ernie D from Radio Disney, who broadcast live from the float during the parade.
“Disneyland

Finally, I’ll leave you with a shot of the entire float. You can see Lightning McQueen and Sally racing in the front, on top of a floral “Welcome to Cars Land” sign; Flo’s V8 Cafe and Cozy Cone Motel signs (along with a mini Cozy Cone Motel underneath); floral representations of ride vehicles from Luigi’s Flying Tires and Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree; Luigi and Guido cheering on miniature Radiator Springs Racers vehicles racing through a floral replica of Ornament Valley – with a real waterfall!

Check back tomorrow for one more behind-the-scenes video from the float construction!

And I want to say a special hello to Disney Parks Blog reader, Jazmine – I enjoyed meeting you and your dad at the parade this morning!

Destination: 124th Rose Parade

posted on December 31st, 2012 by Valarie Sukovaty, Disneyland Public Relations

Tomorrow is the big day! Our amazing float, “Destination: Cars Land,” is almost ready for the 124th Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif. The floral replica of Cars Land, our new land at Disney California Adventure park, is 125 feet long and 35 feet high! More than 2,000 volunteers helped decorate the float with more than a hundred different kinds of flowers, seeds, foliage and cactus. Lightning McQueen alone is made of more than 2,000 red carnations!

The “Destination: Cars Land” float is truly a work of art that began two and half months ago. The decorating took two weeks, and in this video you can see the final touches being added at the warehouse in Azusa, Calif. Make sure to tune in to your local ABC station in the morning and see it roll down Colorado Boulevard. And as we like to say around here, get ready to be floored!

The Cars Land Rose Parade Float is Lookin’ Good!

I am floored by our Cars Land float for the 124th Rose Parade! It even has a cool name, “Destination: Cars Land.” In this video, we take you behind the scenes one more time to the warehouse in Azusa, Calif., in a follow-up to the first video we showed you a few weeks back, when the float was only a metal frame. But wait until you see it now! Click play, check it out and make sure to check the Disney Parks Blog next week, as we take you behind the scenes again as hundreds of flowers are added to the float.
