The D23 Expo is kicking off with a few folks that know a thing or two about magical starts.

D23 Expo to Kick off with runDisney D2.3 Fun Run

On Friday, August 9, runDisney will be hosting a 2.3-mile fun run for D23 Members. The morning event will lead runners down main streets and through castles in classic runDisney style. Of course, there will also be little pixie dust sprinkled along the way, so it’ll be an experience a runner won’t want to miss.

To RSVP, send your full name and D23 membership number to DLR.SportsMeetUps@Disney.com. Only a limited number of qualified D23 Members will be selected to participate, so be one of the first to apply.

Fans can join D23 at www.D23.com and at www.DisneyStore.com/D23.

In the meantime, here are a few things you should know:

  • All selected participants must be available for a 5:45 a.m. PT start time on Friday, August 9.
  • Qualified applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • A D23 membership number must be submitted at the time of application, and is non-transferable.
  • A valid photo ID is required. Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Limit to one RSVP per individual. Applicants sending RSVPs from more than one email address will be disqualified.
  • Valid RSVPs must include your name. RSVPs that include more than one person or are missing information (e.g. incomplete names) will not be accepted.
  • Admittance to the event is non-transferable and limited to the selected applicant; no additional guests please.
  • The event is subject to change or cancellation without notice.
  • Because this is a running-oriented event, we require that applicants be experienced runners, able to maintain a 12-minute per mile pace (qualified).
  • Selected applicants attending the meet-up are not required to purchase admission.
  • We will send an email to selected applicants who sent their valid RSVP via email before we reached capacity to confirm their attendance for Friday. We plan to send this email at approximately 2 p.m. PT today, and we will also post a link on the Disney Parks Blog that will include a list of names of all selected applicants. If you do not receive an email from us confirming your reservation and your name does not appear on the list of selected applicants, your RSVP was not selected.

New D23 Expo 2013 Silent Auction Lot to Drive You Wild

posted on July 15th, 2013 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

How many of you are Twitter followers of @ChipFoose? I am, and I’m pretty sure I saw some tweets from author Steven Miller too during Chip’s recent appearance at Car Masters Weekend in Downtown Disney West Side at the Walt Disney World Resort.

What else has Chip Foose been up to? Well, I’m about to reveal that, right here on the Disney Parks Blog. We’ve just added a custom piece from Foose Design to the already incredible list of silent auction lots available during D23 Expo 2013 at the Anaheim Convention Center, August 9 – 11.

So what is it? It is in fact a one-of-a-kind framed piece of automotive artwork that fits in perfectly among the work of some of the world’s first class pop artists and in my opinion can be displayed just about anywhere. Here’s a look at the concept for this extraordinary piece.
Custom Piece from Chip Foose Added to the List of Silent Auction Lot Available During D23 Expo 2013

Legendary car designer and builder Chip Foose has taken part of an authentic vintage Mark VII Autopia attraction vehicle and put his own spin on it. Foose’s signature mark style is prevalent down to the custom paint scheme and authentic Mark VII Autopia gas cap. Dad, if you’re reading this now … it’s time to buy a ticket and get ready to bid!

Tickets to the D23 Silent Auction are $23 per guest. The Auction itself is scheduled to take place on August 10. Tickets are available now via ArtofDisneyParks.com, but remember separate theme park D23 Expo admission is required. View other D23 Silent Auction items here.

If you’re curious to find out more on Chip Foose, check out the latest and greatest information on his website at ChipFoose.com.

Explore Walt Disney’s Vision of Tomorrow: Join ‘The Optimist’

posted on July 8th, 2013 by Erin Glover, Social Media Director, Disneyland Resort

Of all the ways to describe Walt Disney — dreamer, innovator, filmmaker, television pioneer, theme park creator — perhaps “visionary idealist” is the most intriguing. That trait takes center stage in “The Optimist,” a new alternate-reality game presented through a partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development and The Walt Disney Studios.

Explore Walt Disney's Vision of Tomorrow in ‘The Optimist’

In this narrative adventure, participants around the globe linked by social media will join fictional characters to explore both virtual and physical realms, piecing together an imagined story of Walt Disney, the Imagineers and other visionary thinkers and their potential involvement in a secret project that sought to build a better future.

“In this alternate reality experience, one of our characters has discovered some previously unknown facts that could change what we think we know about Walt Disney, Imagineering and Disneyland park,” said Scott Trowbridge, head of Walt Disney Imagineering Research & Development. “Players can participate at different levels of engagement over the six-week story — from leveraging social media and mobile devices to visiting unique physical sites from the story in and around Los Angeles.”

While some characters and situations in “The Optimist” are based on real people and events, Scott noted that the overall experience is fictitious and does not intend to represent historical accuracy. The experience culminates at the ultimate Disney fan event, D23 Expo in Anaheim, Calif., August 9-11, 2013.

“At Imagineering, we are constantly exploring and developing new ways to engage our guests in compelling, interactive experiences,” Scott said. “With ‘The Optimist,’ we are excited to connect people with each other around the world to uncover a story that seems so unbelievable — and at the same time, so encouraging — that it could only come from Disney.”

Visit optimist.disney.com to learn more about the experience and get started.

If you’re one of the many readers who love our peeks at Walt Disney Imagineering, then you won’t believe what’s planned for this year’s D23 Expo. In honor of their 60th anniversary, Walt Disney Imagineering is hosting an “open house” that’ll offer fans an unprecedented look at its creative processes and a rare opportunity to see just how the magic is created.

D23 Expo guests will get an up-close look at an eclectic array of Imagineering’s creative minds – ride engineers, model builders, pre-visualization artists, special effects designers, inventors, and show animators. You’ll also have the chance to glimpse the “workspaces” of several project teams from around Disney’s global portfolio of parks and resorts.

And for the first time at the D23 Expo, Walt Disney Imagineering will be showcasing some of its most historical and revered concept art from its Art Library, including Herb Ryman’s original drawing of Disneyland park.

In the Disney Parks pavilion, D23 Expo guests will have the chance to explore Mickey’s of Glendale, an outlet of Walt Disney Imagineering’s employee-only store, to shop for unique souvenirs and collectibles and Walt Disney Imagineering merchandise not available anywhere else.

D23 Expo attendees will also be able to attend 12 unique presentations and panel discussions that will take fans on the incredible journey behind the latest Disney resorts, attractions, and entertainment including:

  • The Art and Artistry of Aulani – Imagineers Joe Rohde and Jeanette Lomboy will share the authentic tapestry of art and stories found at Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa.

  • Charles Phoenix Presents – Noted humorist and self-proclaimed “retro daddy” Charles Phoenix shares some of his favorite images from around Disney, featuring classic kitsch, clashing color schemes, and hairdos that truly defy gravity.

Disney’s D23 Expo is August 9-11 in Anaheim and tickets are now on sale. On Sunday, August 11, there will be a full day dedicated to the celebration of Walt Disney Imagineering’s 60th anniversary. The presentations in the 2,000-seat Stage 23 Theater with current and former Imagineers will explore a wide range of topics from working with Walt Disney himself, to the exploration of creativity, innovation, and humor in the parks, to a lively discussion of what it’s like to lead one of the world’s most creative organizations.

A couple of weeks ago, I shared the first look at D23 Expo 2013 official merchandise. When I did, it seemed to me there were a lot of you out there anxious to see what we have up our sleeves for this year’s D23 Silent Auction. Any interested bidders, better get ready.

There are more than 70 lots in the mix, which include everything from experiences and artifacts to attraction vehicles, signs, pin sets, props and more.

Here are a few I knew you just had to see!

Matterhorn Bobsleds Tandem Vehicles
Remain Seated Please! Permanecer sentados por favor! Why? Because, these vintage Disneyland park Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction tandem vehicles will let your mind race thru Alpine passes, around ice caverns and past an abominable snowman.

If people often tell you that you march to the beat of your own drum, then have I got the ticket for you. Check out this Mickey Mouse Club drum prop which was previously displayed at Mickey’s of Glendale at Walt Disney Imagineering.

Siamese Cats – Si and Am Props
Don’t be so catty about this next set! The cats in this lot are Siamese, if you please. For years, these two felines were used as display pieces in Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort. If you are wondering why I chose to show you Si and Am, it’s because first of all, they’re troublemakers, and I can relate, but mostly it’s because “Lady and the Tramp” is one of my favorite animated films.

100 Mickeys – Pin Set
Calling All Pin Traders! This one’s for you! Developed in 2002 in celebration of the 100th birthday of Walt Disney, this framed commemorative pin set includes one-hundred limited-edition pins inspired by the artwork of artist Eric Robison and featuring American icon, Mickey Mouse.

This oversized metal chair, once used as a photo opportunity at Magic Kingdom Park at the Walt Disney World Resort, features Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse who are bound to bring loving comfort and a ‘heart-y’ décor to your home. When I say oversized … I’m not kidding. This chair actually measures 16’ ft tall by 6’ wide.

Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken to Perform ‘The Disney Songbook’ at the D23 Expo

posted on May 28th, 2013 by Jeffrey Epstein, Manager, Marketing

It’s virtually impossible to walk through Disney Parks without hearing the music of the Sherman Brothers and Alan Menken. And for one night only, Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken will take the stage together to play some of their most beloved compositions at the D23 Expo. This once-in-a-lifetime event, entitled “Richard M. Sherman and Alan Menken: The Disney Songbook,” will take place Saturday, August 10, as part of the Ultimate Disney Fan Event at the Anaheim Convention Center.
Richard M. Sherman Will Perform 'The Disney Songbook' with Alan Menken at the D23 Expo

In the parks, the Sherman Brothers music can be heard on such attractions as “it’s a small world,” Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh and Carousel of Progress. Alan’s work is highlighted on the numerous attractions and shows based on “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Aladdin” in many parks. Of course, that’s just the tip of the iceberg, and guests at the D23 Expo can expect to hear many of their favorites during the show.

“I can’t express how excited I am that my esteemed friend Alan Menken and I will be sharing the same bill for the very first time,” said Richard. “Alan is an incredible talent, and I know we’re both thrilled to be performing for Disney’s most ardent fans — they’re the best, and I can’t wait to be a part of what promises to be a very special night for all of us.”

“And I can’t think of anyone I’d prefer to share that stage with,” added Alan. “Richard, along with his brother Robert, wrote songs that filled my formative years with joy and fantasy.”

The concert will take place inside the 4,000-seat D23 Expo Arena and will be simulcast into a 2,000-seat overflow theater inside the Convention Center. For more information about the concert, click here, and to purchase your tickets for the D23 Expo, click here.

“Walt

Of course Disney Parks play a huge role in this show, with such beloved attractions as Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland park and Horizons at Epcot celebrating anniversaries, as well as entire theme parks like Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Tokyo Disneyland (15 and 30, respectively).
