D23 Reveals ‘Treasures’ from Disney Parks, Films and More in a Dazzling New Exhibit

posted on July 5th, 2012 by Jeffrey Epstein, Manager, Marketing

Today, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library & Museum officially opened the doors to an impressive new exhibit – D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives.

This remarkable exhibition, covering almost 90 years of Disney history, boasts nearly 500 stunning artifacts — many of which have never been seen by the general public — from Disney movies, television, parks and the early years of the company.

Pirates of the Caribbean - D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives Sleeping Beauty - D23 Presents Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives

Along with elaborate props, costumes and set pieces from “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” “Mary Poppins” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” guests can get an up-close look at Walt Disney’s formal office full of his personal effects, see the original “Steamboat Willie” script penned by Walt himself, and gaze on the original storybooks that opened the animated film classics “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “Cinderella.”

There’s also a treasure trove of delights for fans of Disney Parks, including the original concept drawing of Disneyland park by Disney Legend Herb Ryman, the first ticket sold to Disneyland (purchased by Roy O. Disney), the original bride from the Haunted Mansion at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort, original attraction vehicles from Peter Pan’s Flight and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride, and the imposing head of the original Maleficent dragon from Fantasmic! at Disneyland park, which many guests may have seen several weeks ago during its journey to the museum in Simi Valley. There is also an impressive section called “Disney’s Hall of Presidents,” a salute to both the classic Magic Kingdom attraction in Florida and the long association Walt Disney and The Walt Disney Company have enjoyed with many residents of the White House dating back to the 1940s.

Historic Orange Bird Returns to Adventureland at Magic Kingdom Park

posted on April 17th, 2012 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

UPDATE: New Orange Bird images have emerged from this morning’s announcement. Check out the new images below!

Well, isn’t this a surprise?

Early this morning, D23 representatives announced the return of the historic Orange Bird character live in Adventureland before a small group of D23 members.

In case you aren’t familiar, Orange Bird was a character who was developed specifically for Magic Kingdom Park in the 1970s. This cheerful bird originally greeted families at Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland, where guests could also enjoy citrus drinks and buy Orange Bird gifts. At one time, the character even had his own record, which was released in 1971 to feature “The Orange Bird Song” – a tune penned by the Sherman Brothers (composers of the songs in “Mary Poppins” and “The Jungle Book”).

Beginning today, Orange Bird will return to Sunshine Tree Terrace signage and quirky drink cups, and a new line of Orange Bird merchandise has already appeared on the shelves! Also, an Orange Bird statue that was on display at Sunshine Tree Terrace in the 1970s was retrieved from the WDI Sculpture Studio in California, and is now on display.

We’ll have photos to share from the announcement shortly, but in the meantime, here’s a brand-new desktop wallpaper by Jason “Tiki” Tackett for you to enjoy!

D23 Brings Magic and Merriment to Walt Disney World Resort

posted on December 12th, 2011 by Jeffrey Epstein, Manager, Marketing

This past weekend members of D23: The Official Disney Fan Club enjoyed two full days of holiday happenings at Walt Disney World Resort during the club’s annual Magic and Merriment event. In fact, the event was so popular in past years that D23 doubled the capacity this year by offering the event two times. And the excitement was capped with a royal engagement.

D23 Brings Magic and Merriment to Walt Disney World Resort

The merriment kicked off inside World Showplace at Epcot where guests were treated to presentations that offered an insider’s look at the holidays around the resort. Imagineer Alex Caruthers and Holiday Services manager Lisa Borotkanics revealed some of the secrets to transforming Walt Disney World Resort, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, and the Disney Cruise Line fleet into wintery wonderlands. Walt Disney Archivist Steven Vagnini looked at the history of the Candlelight Processional at Disney Parks (later that day, guests enjoyed reserved seating to see the spectacle for themselves). And Disney Legend Kathryn Beaumont (who gave voice to Wendy in “Peter Pan” and Alice in “Alice in Wonderland”) talked about her history with Walt Disney working with Walt on 1951’s Walt Disney Christmas Show.

D23 Brings Magic and Merriment to Walt Disney World Resort

Imagineer Gary Landrum explored the creation of the Cinderella Castle Dream Suite – and the following day, guests all received a tour of the rarely seen accommodations. It was inside this regal room that D23 Member Amanda Richards received a royal proposal from her now-fiancé, Ben Doughan. Congratulations!

“The Dream Suite was more magical than I expected,” said D23 Member Debbie Bingham who had traveled from New Jersey to attend the event. “It was even more impressive after hearing the presentation the day before where the Imagineer described all the details.” Guests also got a glimpse backstage, visiting the Holiday and Scenic Services buildings as well as the Parade Barn. “It doesn’t ruin the magic,” added Debbie’s husband Gary. “It makes it even more impressive.”

Goofy with D23 Members at Walt Disney World Resort

Also included during the weekend were Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and a spectacular holiday feast at Disney’s Animal Kingdom after the park had closed to guests. While Magic and Merriment marks the end of another year of extraordinary experiences, D23 has unveiled an impressive slate of events for 2012 that will bring Disney delights to D23 Members across the country. Stay tuned for even more exciting announcements coming soon from D23: The Official Disney Fan Club regarding exclusive events, opportunities and benefits just for D23 Members.

D23 Events Go Coast to Coast—and Park to Park

posted on November 18th, 2011 by Jeffrey Epstein, Manager, Marketing

From Walt’s boyhood hometown to an animation celebration, D23Disney’s official fan club—is making 2012 a fan-tastic year with more unique immersive experiences than ever before – events we know passionate Disney enthusiasts will enjoy.

D23 Events Go Coast to Coast

We’re sure many of you have seen the famed “Partners” statue with Walt and Mickey at one of the Disney parks. If you look closely at Walt’s tie you will see the letters “STR”—that stands for Smoke Tree Ranch, an exclusive Palm Springs resort Walt called “my own laughing place.” And January 23 – 25, D23 Members will have a chance to experience this retreat the way Walt did during the “Smoke Tree Ranch Roundup” with three days of screenings, presentations, activities and delectable meals, all while staying in a Smoke Tree Ranch cottage.

If you have ever visited the “One Man’s Dream” attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (Presented by D23) then perhaps you enjoyed learning about Walt’s early years in Marceline, Missouri? This March, D23 will take members on a Journey to Marceline for full-day experience seeing the town that partially inspired Walt’s creative vision for Main Street, U.S.A.

D23 Events Go Coast to Coast

This spring will see the debut of a new event called D23 Fanniversary Celebration, a series of cross-country events marking over 40 magical milestones in Disney’s rich history from attractions and theme park openings to live-action and animated films and beyond. Disney fans will be able to join the “celebration” in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Boston, New York and Orlando.

D23 Events Go Coast to Coast

Speaking of anniversaries, in March D23 will celebrate its third anniversary with a special event at Disneyland park followed by Destination D: 75 Years of Disney Animation which will be held at the Disneyland Resort this August honoring the diamond anniversary of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Disney feature animation. At Walt Disney World Resort, D23 will celebrate Epcot’s 30th anniversary and fan favorites like the holiday tradition Magic & Merriment will return along with Sip & Stroll, which in 2012 will get a Halloween twist and become Sip & Scream!

Want more? Well, there’s the new screening series From the Vaults at the Walt Disney Studios, which brings beloved live-action films from the past back to the big screen, like Newsies, Sister Act and Treasure Island. The 50 and Fabulous screening series returns, as do D23′s signature tours of the Studio and Walt Disney Archives—which will double in capacity!

And that’s just the beginning! Look for even more events to be announced in the upcoming months as D23 continues to create one-of-a-kind events for Disney fans.

Special Thanks to D23 Expo Attendees

posted on August 19th, 2011 by Tom Staggs, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts

Thanks to all of you for your responses. Your passion, energy and affection for our parks and resorts is the reason we do what we do so I appreciate your feedback. I know many of you were hoping for announcements regarding new projects from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, especially at Walt Disney World Resort, so I wanted to take a moment to address those comments.

The projects we’ve already announced represent the largest period of growth ever in Disney Parks’ history. We’re working hard to create new and exciting experiences for our guests around the world and while the timing isn’t always right to announce another big project, we like to use opportunities like the D23 Expo to update fans like you on the great progress we’re making. We have several incredible projects currently in the works and look forward to sharing more information with all of you in the weeks and months ahead, including new details regarding Downtown Disney in Florida.

Greetings from the D23 Expo! Earlier today I shared the Anaheim Convention Center stage with Disneyland President George Kalogridis and some of our senior Imagineers for a behind-the-scenes look at several of the incredible projects currently underway at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. As many of you know, we are in the middle of the largest expansion period in our history so while we didn’t have time to talk about everything, we were able to update some of our biggest fans with the latest news from Walt Disney World, Shanghai Disney Resort, Aulani and Disneyland Resort.

For the D23 members who were able to attend the show, I want to thank you for the incredibly warm welcome that our team received. If you weren’t able to make it, we hope you enjoy the highlights from the presentation posted here on the Disney Parks blog.

It’s About ‘Time’ for the D23 Expo

posted on August 18th, 2011 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

Ingersoll Mickey Mouse Wrist Watch

I’m beyond fascinated with time. Whether you believe that time is linear or cyclical, the biggest challenge I face is that I never have enough of it (oh, 36-hour day – where are you?). Luckily, there are several new timepieces coming to Disney Parks that will help me keep track of my disappearing time. Some of these new timepieces salute the first Mickey Mouse watches made by the Ingersoll Waterbury Clock company. Signed by the late Disney Legend Kay Kamen, Ingersoll was the first Disney licensee to introduce Disney watches at the 1933 Chicago Exposition. The original watches were an immediate hit and are now highly desired collectors’ items. I spoke with Tracie Alt, Product Developer for Timepieces, about the introduction of these tribute timepieces.

“We are excited to introduce these classic Mickey Mouse timepieces to Disney Parks in the United States,” explained Tracie. “There is a lot of history that comes with these watches and they are a great tribute to the heritage of the Walt Disney Company. While the watches look like the originals, they were made with modern materials.”

Ingersoll Pocket Watch from Disney Parks

I think my favorite is the pocket watch as it reminds me of a pocket watch I had when I was younger (except I think I need a waistcoat). Good news if you are attending the D23 Expo this coming weekend! These Mickey Mouse watches will debut in the Dream Store. Tracie also told me that guests attending the Expo will get a sneak preview of something new.

Ingersoll Classic Watches from Disney Parks

“We will have a sneak preview of several classic Disney watches by Ingersoll at the D23 Expo,” continued Tracie. “These watches feature classic Disney characters like Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Donald Duck, paired with fashionable designs. They will be released this coming fall.”

Spoiler alert for my mother – I think I found your next birthday gift. She is a Minnie Mouse fan yet I’m drawn to the Donald Duck design. Each classic Disney watch will be packaged in a Mickey Mouse shaped metal tin.

Artisan Watch Program Artwork by Disney Artist Eric Scales

I have “time” for one more preview (yes, I write all the jokes). My fellow Disney Parks Blog author Michelle Harker shared with me this artwork by Disney artist Eric Scales. The designs are part of the Artisan Watch Program at Disney Parks and were created especially for the D23 Expo. Each watch will have an edition size of 100 and a retail of $125.
