It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
Okay so it’s still Halloween Time at the Disneyland Resort, but behind the scenes, the Creative Entertainment team is already hard at work getting ready to deck the halls for the holidays. And this year, they’re bringing something new to Disney California Adventure park that’s sure to be fantástico – Disney ¡Viva Navidad!
Disney ¡Viva Navidad! will bring the Paradise Gardens area of the park to life with festive music, vibrant colors, jubilant dancing, character appearances, delicious food and fun activities for the whole family.
Several times each day, a high-energy street party takes over Paradise Gardens, led by the “Three Caballeros” – Donald Duck and his life-long amigos Panchito from Mexico and Jose Carioca from Brazil. The infectious mix of Mariachi and Samba musicians, folklórico and carnaval dancers, 12-foot-tall mojiganga puppets and those ambassadors of holiday cheer, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, will really get the crowd going, as Santa and Mrs. Claus join in to cheer and celebrate “¡Viva Navidad!”
You won’t want to miss it! Disney ¡Viva Navidad! becomes part of the Holidays at Disneyland Resort on November 15 and continues through January 6, 2014, with additional Three Kings Day celebrations January 3-6.
One of my favorite things about “The Magic of Disney Parks Storytelling” series is learning something new about some of my favorite Disneyland Resort attractions and lands. Soarin’ Over California is at the top of my must-do list, and I’ve always been intrigued by the tributes to aviation placed throughout the area. So, please make sure your tray-table is locked and your seat is in the upright position … we are clear for take-off on this journey into the story of Condor Flats!
According to legend, Condor Flats was once a destination for pilots and aeronautical innovators. Airmen traveled from across the country to Southern California for the wide-open spaces and good thermal winds found in this arid high desert. From the beginnings of the Age of Aviation and into the Space Age, Condor Flats was the stage for the Golden State’s aerospace industry . The fading exteriors of the hangars in the area stand as a testament to this exciting and innovative period in aviation.
The original hangar in Condor Flats was a key workshop for early California aviators and designers. Then from the mid-1940s to the late 1960s, Condor Flats became the hub of rocket research and jet testing. “Higher, Faster, Further” was the motto of this time period, and technology was skyrocketing, quite literally. The engineers and aviators needed to move to more sophisticated headquarters in order to further their rocket and radar research, but they kept the old hangar as a symbol of their high-flying dreams while a new hangar was built just a little further down the runway.
Today, one of the retired test pilots has returned to this iconic flying destination to set up Condor Flats Scenic Air Tours in the original hangar; you can find their logo standing out among the other faded images left from previous years. Walking through Condor Flats today, you’ll notice the original hangar is now the Fly ‘n’ Buy, a souvenir shop, while the rocket test center is Taste Pilots’ Grill.
Next time you are in Condor Flats, look for the Condor Flats Scenic Air Tours logo, or take a look inside Fly ‘n’ Buy or Taste Pilots’ Grill for these special nods to the Age of Aviation!

I’ve always been a fan of hand-colored, hand-tinted postcards, and I have collected a few in the past. So I was surprised when I first saw this photo of the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure park because it looked a lot to me like an old hand-colored postcard. The only thing I did differently in my normal editing process was to over-saturate the image to make it look a bit more like a hand-colored postcard. What do you think?
Disneyland Resort fans have already submitted their holiday cards to be included in “World of Color – Winter Dreams” at Disney California Adventure park, and now it’s time to lend your voices! We’re teaming up with GRAMMY®-winning composer Eric Whitacre to produce “Glow,” a new song written especially for the new holiday show, opening November 15. The piece will be performed by the “World of Color” Honor Choir, inspired by Eric Whitacre’s virtual choirs, with hundreds of voices joined by technology. All you need is a computer, webcam, Internet connection and your voice!
Here’s how it works: Sign up here, learn your part, record your audition video and submit it. Selected submissions by U.S. residents age 18 or older will be joined together to form the “World of Color” Honor Choir.
We invite new as well as experienced singers, who are U.S. residents age 18 or older, to participate in the creation of beautiful music to be performed as part of this new nighttime spectacular. And if you’re new to online choral performances, don’t worry. Visit this online forum, where a technical support team backed by a robust community of experienced online choral singers can assist you through the process.
Are you ready to learn your part? The deadline for submissions is Sunday, October 6, so don’t delay. Ready, set, GLOW!

Olly Murs was in the “Right Place Right Time” for hundreds of excited fans who won the opportunity to see the pop sensation in an exclusive performance at the Disneyland Resort yesterday.
Before he took the stage, Olly met up with Goofy over at Sleeping Beauty Castle to celebrate his visit to the Disneyland Resort.
Then it was over to Disney California Adventure park where Olly’s fans were treated to a special acoustic performance featuring many songs from his debut North American album, “Right Place Right Time.” The lucky audience for this exclusive event was limited to contest winners from all over the country, but now you can watch this amazing show yourself:
Ever since I started working here at the Disneyland Resort, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror has always been special for me. After all, it was the very first attraction that I photographed through construction to opening day. Oh yeah – it’s really fun to ride, too.
I took these photos of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror one moonlit night last month, and I hope you enjoy them.
Check back soon to see daytime photos of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror at Disney California Adventure park in my next “Through A Photographer’s Lens” post.
