Find the Perfect Look for Halloween at the Disneyland Resort

posted on August 5th, 2014 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

I know summer isn’t quite over yet and I don’t want to be the one to rush things, but Halloween is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning your costume! It’s never too early.

Not sure where to start? Consider me your “Costume Consultant.”

I personally think our Disney Princess costumes are quite dazzling. Each gown has been replicated in fine detail, appearing almost identical to those worn by some of Disney’s finest royalty. Don’t be afraid to add a tiara, wand, gloves or other accessories to complete the look.

Find something that puts you ‘heads’ or ‘tails’ above the rest. There’s certainly no shortage of ear hats or novelty headwear at Disney Parks. Find the one that suits you the best, and show your true ‘character.’ Kids and kids-at-heart, keep an eye out for one of this year’s hottest costume accessories, Disney Tails. Keep an eye out for ‘tails’ inspired by the Cheshire Cat, Marie, Tigger and Sulley in the coming weeks. As you can see on a recent visit to our Disney Theme Parks Merchandise east coast office, I found fellow Disney Parks Blog author Steven Miller, having a ‘monster’ous good time lurking about in search of new information to share with all of you.

If your little crewmates ‘arrggh’ ready to find their costumes and it’s adventure that they seek, some additional choices include Jack Sparrow and the Boney Pirate. For your Space Ranger, Buzz Lightyear.

Quick Tip: If you are planning a visit to the Disneyland Resort during the Halloween season or specifically for Mickey’s Halloween Party, be sure to book an appointment for a royal transformation at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or aboard the returning Pirates League.

Are you looking for something a little bit more subtle? This year, I think I’m going to take my inspiration from a recent post about DisneyBounding that my friend and fellow Disney Parks Blog Author, Erin Glover shared as part of the Rock Your Disney Side 24-Hour Event. Create a costume and express your love for Disney through fashion. Not only will you create a trendy, new outfit with clothes you can find in your closet of favorites, but you can also subtly resemble your favorite Disney character.

So where are the best places to find the perfect kids costumes, accoutrements and accessories at the Disneyland Resort?

Halloween Costume stops include:

Those of you located nearer to the Walt Disney World Resort, don’t despair. Here are a few locations for you to check out as well.

Are you ready to trick or treat?

Enjoy Frozen Summer Fun at Disney’s Hollywood Studios with New Limited Edition Retail MagicBand

posted on August 4th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

LIMITD124888

As the “Frozen” Summer Fun celebration continues at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, I have some exciting news to share about a new, limited edition retail MagicBand, featuring Olaf from Disney’s “Frozen.” This item is now available at Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The shop is located between Toy Story Midway Mania and Studio Backlot Tour. I spoke with Kevin-Michael Lezotte, merchandiser for retail MagicBands, about this latest addition.

“We saw a great response from guests when we released two limited edition MagicBands during Star Wars Weekends earlier this year,” explained Kevin-Michael. “This new MagicBand is pre-printed with an image of Olaf ‘chillin’ in summer, and will be presented in a specially designed packaging. These pre-printed MagicBands are another great way guests can show off their Disney Side while visiting Walt Disney World Resort this summer.”

This limited edition retail MagicBand will have an edition size of 5,000, and will have a retail of $29.95 (plus tax).

LIMITD124878

You may recall that this new MagicBand will join three open edition MagicBands inspired by Disney’s “Frozen,” which are currently offered in Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post.

As with all retail MagicBand purchases, guests must present one of the following for the MagicBand to be linked to at the time of purchase: valid theme park admission, Memory Maker card or another MagicBand.

These specific “Frozen” MagicBands will not be offered on our Disney Parks online store or via Merchandise Guest Services team.

Guests, however, can find other select MagicBand accessories, like MagicBandits and MagicSliders, online at DisneyParks.com/Store.

We love the pretty packaging almost as much as the 100 percent Specialty Grade Arabica coffee. From Walt Disney World Resort, there’s a new coffee for Tusker House Restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, The Hollywood Brown Derby at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, The Wave … of American Flavors and California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort, Cítricos and Narcoossee’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Yachtsman Steakhouse at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort. At Disneyland Resort, both Napa Rose at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Steakhouse 55 at the Disneyland Hotel have their own special coffees.

Best of all, since you can’t wake up at Disney every morning, you can order the special blends online at http://www.joffreys.com/DisneyParksandResorts.

Based in Tampa, Fla., Joffrey’s was one of the first specialty roasters in Florida, and their relationship with Disney began in 1995 with a single kiosk at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park at Walt Disney World Resort.

What’s Your Kiddo’s Favorite Disney Film?

posted on August 1st, 2014 by Jamie Langdon, Social Media Manager

If you’re anything like me, “Frozen” mania has struck your household and you have the movie soundtrack stuck in your head pretty much all day, every day. As part of our #DisneyKids series, we asked our panel of preschoolers about their favorite movie and not surprisingly, “Frozen” was the unanimous winner among both the girls and boys. Even when the topic moved on to other things, our group simply could not “Let It Go.” Luckily, little ones’ dreams can come true when they visit Arendelle during Frozen Summer Fun at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, or meet Elsa and Anna over at Magic Kingdom Park.

Which Disney film is your child’s favorite? Tell us in the “Comments” section below!

Disney Billboards: More than Meets the Eye

posted on July 30th, 2014 by Russ J. Stacey, Writer, Yellow Shoes Creative Group

BILBOR111555

When was the last time you looked at a billboard — I mean really looked? Ever spot a facet of one that you missed at first glance? Something that made it pop?

When it comes to Disney theme park billboards, bet you didn’t realize all that’s entailed into making them so exceptional, filled with sly references and artfully hidden gems. Well, those creative whizzes at Disney’s Yellow Shoes Creative Group know how to ensure they don’t just look amazing and enticing, but also tell a story. But why go the extra mile?

BILBOR398777

“We hope to remind guests of how much fun they had on the attractions or that they create a sense of anticipation to want to go on them if they haven’t,” explains Yellow Shoes Senior Art Director Steve Carsella. “Having all the details in the billboards is in line with a Disney theme park experience by adding something special wherever you look.”

For instance, on one of the latest Expedition Everest billboards, subtle yet oh-so-clever tidbits include the Yeti’s footprints in what looks like random texture in the snow, an authentic Tibetan carving embedded in the “T” in the word “EVEREST” and the Yeti’s shadow disguised as a rock cropping. Meanwhile, a new Twilight Zone Tower of Terror board includes a falling brick that is actually an old-timey radio that’s a prop from the attraction’s queue and a Hidden Mickey stamped on another brick.

Disney Billboards: More than Meets the Eye Disney Billboards: More than Meets the Eye

When designing and implementing billboards, there are general creative tenets that are taken into consideration, of course. Does it accurately depict the attraction? Is it readable? Does it feel cinematic? Are there strong details that don’t impede the message? But it takes that Disney magic of adding just enough originality and ingenuity that assures they are always surprising, dynamic and uncommon.

“I think it follows in the steps of Walt himself to pay attention to the details and to offer our guests something out of the ordinary,” Steve says.

So now that you know, maybe next time you’ll take the time to appreciate all the thought and effort that go into Disney billboards. Just wait until it’s safe to check them out!

Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith Turns 15 at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on July 29th, 2014 by Jennifer Fickley-Baker, Social Media Manager

Today we’re celebrating the anniversary of one of my favorite attractions – Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith. The attraction originally opened its doors at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on July 29, 1999.

ROCKCOA1564614521

In case you haven’t experienced it yet, the attraction lets you tour G-Force Records, the music studio where Aerosmith is holding a recording session. When the band heads out to a show, they invite you to travel to the show in a super-stretch limo that speeds from 0-57 mph in just 2.8 seconds. Better yet – each limo is equipped with an audio system consisting of 125 speakers, 24 sub-woofers and more than 32k watts of audio amplifier output power and each car broadcasts different Aerosmith songs.

In honor of today’s anniversary, here are 15 fun facts about the attraction:

  1. The attraction’s grand opening on July 29, 1999 featured a dedication ceremony with Aerosmith.
  2. The giant electric guitar that serves as the attraction’s icon measures 40 feet tall.
  3. There are more than 900 speakers throughout the attraction.
  4. The attraction’s track measures 3,403 feet.
  5. Elements of the attraction were manufactured as far away as Netherlands and Germany.
  6. Aerosmith band members Steven Tyler and Joe Perry took part in re-recordings for the attraction. The entire band appears in the attraction’s preshow film.
  7. The band’s manager who appears in the preshow was played by actress Illeana Douglas.
  8. The DJ who is “broadcasting live” from the Aerosmith concert is classic rock DJ Uncle Joe Benson.
  9. The look of the super-stretch limo was influenced by the 1962-era Cadillac.
  10. Each super-stretch limo can fit 24 passengers.
  11. Each guest is surrounded by five speakers – four around the head and one subwoofer under the seat.
  12. Each vehicle features a different Aerosmith song or medley. Tracks are: “Nine Lives”; “Sweet Emotion”; a “Back in the Saddle”/”Dude Looks Like a Lady” medley; a “Love in an Elevator”/”Walk This Way” medley; and a “Young Lust”/”F.I.N.E.”/”Love in an Elevator” medley.
  13. Guests experience a g-force between 4-5 entering the first inversion on the track.
  14. The attraction was the first coaster at Walt Disney World Resort to feature multiple inversions.
  15. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster opened at Walt Disney Studios Park (Paris) in 2002. There, it’s called “Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster avec Aerosmith.”
