Spotlight on New Pins Arriving in July 2014 at Disney Parks

posted on July 24th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

This summer, the Disney pin team is releasing about 250 new items for guests to collect or trade at Disney Parks. It’s time to turn the spotlight once again on some new pins coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts this month. I spoke with Erin Catalano, the merchandiser behind many of these pins, about some of her favorite selections.

pinnnn689322

“There are so many favorite pins we are releasing this month,” exclaimed Erin. “I love the new four-pin chalkboard art set featuring characters from Walt Disney’s ‘Alice in Wonderland.’ The set reminds me of the chalkboard art-inspired home goods found in the Marketplace Co-Op at Downtown Disney Marketplace in Florida. I also like the vintage Mouseketeer logo as it recall watching the Mickey Mouse Club when I was younger. Finally, Disney’s ‘Hercules’ is one of my favorite animated films, so I included a pin with Hercules and Meg.”

I was happy to see that Blank and Bow, the adorable Vinylmation figures from Valentine’s Day this year, will come to life in pin form.

I also recently spotted the Anna and Elsa pins at Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post & Frozen Funland in Disney’s Hollywood Studios for the Frozen Summer Celebration. Those pins are also available in a handful of other locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

Speaking of Anna and Elsa, their shoe-inspired ornaments are included in a multi-pin set that contains other character-inspired shoes.

Finally, I pulled together an image of Chip ‘n’ Dale pins as I thought my fiancée would enjoy seeing them (she’s a super fan of those chipmunks). I also know there are a few fans that will be delighted to see a new “Chip ‘n’ Dale Rescue Rangers” pin (sing along with me … Ch-ch-ch-ch-Chip…).

Look for these pins in a variety of Disney pin locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Merchandise ‘Rockets’ Into Disney Parks

posted on July 16th, 2014 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

My friend and Disney Parks Blog author Shawn Slater was the first to give you the inside scoop on the “Guardians of the Galaxysneak peek taking place now at Disney Parks. How many of you have already seen it? If you haven’t, I’m not going to spoil it for you, but I would definitely recommend checking out this intergalactic 3D cosmic adventure the next time you visit the Magic Eye Theater in Tomorrowland at Disneyland park or ABC Sound Studio at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. If you are planning to set your course for space adventure and join the quartet of ragtag rivals along with Peter Quill to help save the universe, then we better make sure you are prepared for battle. Here’s your first look at some of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” merchandise you can expect to find at Disney Parks.

Fans of the entire “Guardians of the Galaxy” crew or Rocket, in particular, will be happy to find these film-inspired T-shrits.

As for toys, we have those too! You’ll find the Rapid Fire Rocket, Star-Lord Blaster, a Hero Ship and Pursuit Spacecraft play sets, as well as Galactic Battler, Titan Hero figures and more.

A few other things to keep an eye out for in the coming weeks is the “Guardians of the Galaxy” book and CD, as well as a specially designed D-Tech iPhone case and more. One final pick for me, is the “Guardians of the Galaxy” limited edition pin. Take a look!

New Hidden Mickey Pins Arriving at Disney Parks in July 2014

posted on July 11th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

HMP865964

Now that summer has arrived at Disney Parks, guests will soon find new Hidden Mickey pins at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. These unique pins will be distributed to cast members to use for trading with guests by late July 2014. You may recall that we typically release two different waves of pins a year (the first wave this year was introduced back in February). Here is a closer look at what guests can expect to trade in the coming months.

HMP865965

Cast members at Disneyland Resort will soon receive an assortment of 30 different pins to use for trading with guests. The image above is a checklist to help you identify the new pins coming to California. As a reminder, Hidden Mickey pins typically measure about 1.25-inches and contain the phrase ”Hidden Mickey Pin” on the back of the pin.

I think my favorite series features Disney Birds (I’m partial to birds, especially ones that are orange). The special thing about this series is that there will be five different Disney bird pins found at Walt Disney World Resort that complement the pins at Disneyland Resort. The “Villainous Sidekicks” collection will also feature complementary pins.

HMP865966

The image above shows the 30 pins that will be distributed to cast members at Walt Disney World Resort. The series that caught my eye in this collection is the character themed MagicBands.

Chaser pins will also be included in this new wave for 2014. These silver-colored pins are rarer to find compared to their full color counterparts.

Which pins do you want to trade? Please share in the comments below.

Distinctly Patriotic Merchandise at The American Adventure in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on July 3rd, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

FJM706683

With the Fourth of July holiday only a few days away, I spent some time in one of my favorite pavilions at Epcot, The American Adventure. After all these years of visiting Walt Disney World Resort, I never tire of seeing the magnificent Voices of Liberty followed by the amazing show hosted by Mark Twain and Benjamin Franklin. I still tear up when hearing “Golden Dream” played during the montage of historical events (the Apollo 11 moon landing gets me every time!). After the show, I stopped in Heritage Manor Gifts, the merchandise location at Epcot that introduced a whole new assortment of goods last fall. This time, I was in search of merchandise with a distinctly patriotic theme.

FJM706682

I was delighted to find several things bathed in red, white and blue including many new shirts. I really liked the patriotic Mickey Mouse shirt which was made in the U.S.A. (just like the shirt states). The location also had a few different Tervis Tumblers along with red and blue toothpick holders.

FJM706684

In addition to a few Disney-themed T-shirts, there was an assortment of Americana-themed shirts by Black & Denim, a company based out of Tampa, Florida.

My favorite item in the shop was the tapestry featuring Mickey Mouse, Goofy and Donald Duck with artwork reminiscent of Disney Parks’ bicentennial celebration from 1975, America on Parade.

FJM706685

While many of these items are found only in Heritage Manor Gifts at Epcot, guests may find the patriotic Mickey Mouse plush in several shops at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

This year, there is also a limited edition pin with Tinker Bell that isn’t offered at The American Adventure Pavilion. The pin has an edition size of 3,000 and contains a red, white and blue pinwheel that spins. Look for it in Disney pin trading locations in both California and Florida.

Have a Happy Fourth of July!

New Pins to Collect and Trade Coming Summer 2014 to Disney Parks

posted on June 19th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

NDP669531

With the start of summer just around the corner, I caught up with Erin Catalano, merchandiser for Disney Pins. You may remember Erin when she wrote articles for the Disney Parks Blog as a member of our Merchandise Communications team. Last December, Erin transitioned to her new role and has since kept busy creating many new pins that are coming to Disney Parks this summer. In this first article of a series of three stories for the Disney Parks Blog, I asked her about the number of pins guests can soon expect to find.

NDP669532

“This summer will be an exciting time for guests who enjoy collecting or trading pins,” exclaimed Erin. “In the next three months, we will have about 250 new open edition pins that will be introduced at locations such as Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort or Disney Cruise Line. We know that finding pins of favorite characters, shows or attractions at Disney Parks is an important part of pin collecting. With these new pins, guests will have even more options to collect or trade what they like.”

NDP669533

Erin’s favorite pins this month were created especially for Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa at Ko ‘Olina, Hawai’i. They include a multi-pin set and some beautiful logo pins featuring Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.

I selected a few of my favorites for the top image in this story. Being a Donald Duck fan, the “I Don’t Tweet, I Quack” pin is outstanding. I was also happy to see Mr. Toad and Rapunzel included in the mix.

NDP669534

Some other pins that caught my eye include chalkboard art-inspired pins that reminded me of products in Disney Centerpiece at the newly opened Marketplace Co-Op at Downtown Disney Marketplace and online.

I’ll check back with Erin in a couple of weeks to see other new pins. Meanwhile, you can see the latest pin release information by visiting http://www.DisneyPins.com.

Happy Trading!

New Soccer Merchandise Scores a Goal at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on June 18th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

MSM795484

My fellow author Darcy Clark recently shared a look at the United World Soccer store at Downtown Disney West Side. This new location is a must-stop destination for fans of fútbol (and it would appear there are many as the world watches the events unfold in Brazil). Elsewhere at Walt Disney World Resort, we have recently introduced new soccer-themed goods that have a splash of Disney.

MSM795485

Decorated in hues of blue, green, yellow and white, this small new assortment was created specifically for World Showcase at Epcot. The main logo features a silhouette of Mickey Mouse kicking a soccer ball, which was used on several apparel items, a glass mug and two open edition pins.

MSM795487

These items can be found in select locations at Epcot and at the World of Disney in Downtown Disney Marketplace. The two open edition pins will also be released in select locations at Disneyland Resort.

MSM795486

One of my favorite items is a limited release pin featuring José Carioca, a character not often seen on Disney merchandise. He was originally created for Walt Disney’s “Saludos Amigos” in 1942, and now stars in the Mexico Pavilion attraction at Epcot, Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros. This pin was released at Disney Traders and Village Traders in World Showcase at Epcot, World of Disney in Downtown Disney Marketplace and Sport Goofy at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort.

Speaking of Epcot, you can watch many of the World Cup games in the Odyssey Center. That’s just one of many viewing locations at Walt Disney World Resort. See the complete list here.

Commemorative Merchandise for the 20th Anniversary of Disney’s ‘The Lion King’ at Disney Parks

posted on June 13th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

01_ParksBlog_LionKing20_Logo

This year marks the 20th Anniversary of Disney’s “The Lion King.” I recently gave you a look at some merchandise we created for Harambe Nights, the special Lion King-themed events taking place every Saturday from now through August 9, 2014 at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. There are, however, some additional items that commemorate this milestone anniversary coming to Disney Parks and the Disney Parks online store.

02_ParksBlog_LionKing20_ShirtPinLARGE

From June 12-17, 2014, the Disney Parks online store will offer an anniversary T-shirt with artwork created by Disney Design Group artist Caley Hicks. This shirt will only be sold online at http://www.DisneyStore.com/ParkEvents. Please allow four-six weeks for delivery.

The Disney Pin team also created a limited edition pin for this anniversary. The pin has an edition size of 2,000, and it will be released in select locations at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort. Unfortunately, this pin won’t be available online.

03_ParksBlog_LionKing20_ItemsLARGE

Disney Theme Park Merchandise has offered items for Disney’s “The Lion King” for many years. I first wrote about them for the Disney Parks Blog in October 2011 when the Diamond Edition of this film was released on Disney Blu-ray and DVD. Recently, I photographed some additional things at Downtown Disney Marketplace including plush, toys, artwork and pins.

Coming in July, you will also find a handful of new open edition pins with characters from this Disney animated classic. These pins will be released at locations in both California and Florida.

Disney Parks Merchandise: Celebrating 80 Years of Donald Duck

posted on June 9th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

don839901

This year, June 9 marks the 80th anniversary for one of my favorite Disney characters, Donald Duck. I’ve been a Donald Duck fan since college when I attended a Disney Institute presentation in Lima, Ohio. During that presentation, the facilitator gave me a small Donald Duck figure for sharing a story about the time I applied to work at Walt Disney World Resort while still in high school (I really wanted to be a cast member!). I still have that critter today, and I have an even greater appreciation of the original angry bird. In recent years, I’ve loved Donald even more for the stylish red bow tie he wears.

don739902

To commemorate this milestone anniversary, the Disney Parks online store is releasing a specially designed T-shirt. From June 9-12, you can find this shirt by visiting DisneyStore.com/ParkEvents. Please allow 4-6 weeks for delivery.

don5789923

We are also releasing a limited edition spinner pin that contains both a black and white and a color image of my favorite bird (edition size is 2,500). This pin will be released in select merchandise locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts starting June 5.

This also seemed like a great time to share photos of my favorite Donald Duck items found at Disney Parks. The suitcase “quacks” me up.

Happy Anniversary, Donald!

Gift Ideas from Walt Disney World Resort for Father’s Day 2014

posted on June 2nd, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

I love being a dad to my two amazing children. I enjoyed taking them to Disney Parks throughout the years much in the same way my father enjoying taking my sister and me when we were younger. With Father’s Day just around the corner, I figured I’d share a few gift ideas from a recent visit to Downtown Disney Marketplace at Walt Disney World Resort. While I’d never ask for gifts (their smiles are the perfect gifts for me), I would consider some of the items to be on my wish list.

FDG806583

The Disney pin team is releasing a limited edition pin, featuring Pongo and some puppies from Walt Disney’s “101 Dalmatians.” This pin has an edition size of 2,500, and will be released in multiple locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts on June 12 (hey, that’s my father’s birthday so happy birthday, Dad).

FDG806584

I was delighted to find a new graphic novel featuring one of my favorite attractions, Space Mountain. This recently released book was written by Bryan Miller (no relation) and illustrated by Kelley Jones. In a word, it’s super amazing (okay, that’s two words but I’m excited there is a graphic novel from Disney).

I was also excited to find more Disney Parks replica signs at the Art of Disney location including one for The Great Movie Ride attraction at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. I also love the Steampunk-inspired locomotive from the Mechanical Kingdom series released a few months ago. That item is now available on our Disney Parks online store along with the other figurines in that series.

FDG806585

I’ve been in the market for a watch, so a new Disney timepiece by Bulova at World of Disney caught my eye. In that shop, I also found a new Mr. Incredible T-shirt (because dads are pretty incredible) and a fun fedora (I love hats!).

FDG806586

Finally, I’m obsessed with coffee so I adore these three mugs inspired by Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park, the Tree of Life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, and Spaceship Earth at Epcot.

Happy Father’s Day!

Disneyland Resort Pin Trading Challenge

posted on April 16th, 2014 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

If you know, me, you know I’m always up for a challenge. So when my dear friend and fellow Disney Parks Blog author Erin Glover challenged me to a Disney Parks Blog Pin Trading Challenge at Disneyland Resort, I said, “I’m in!”

What would the challenge entail? Erin and I headed into Disneyland Resort with rarely seen Disney Parks Blog pins in hopes that we could make some great trades with Disney fans and take part in some of the fun activities and trading opportunities available. You truly have to see this for yourself!

As you can tell, we had a lot of fun trading, and we only visited a handful of locations. There are so many more places you can go. Remember you can also trade with any cast member and other guests.

Disneyland park

Disney California Adventure park

  • Fly ‘n’ Buy
  • Julius Katz & Sons
  • Radiator Springs Curios
  • Seaside Souvenirs
  • Tower Hotel Gifts

Downtown Disney District

I always say, Pin Trading is as easy as 1-2-3. There are just a few things to remember. Here are some guidelines on Disney Trading to help get you started. Tip: Keep an eye out for Hidden Mickey pins, generally found on Disneyland Resort cast member lanyards.

My own personal tip on trading: I always say trade for pins that mean something to you, whether it’s a favorite character, attraction or icon. Trade for things you love. Pin trading can be fun by yourself or with the entire family. It’s a great way to meet new friends, visit with old ones and share stories. Remember, Disney pins and trading are popular at many of our Disney Parks & Resorts.

Now, back to business, the competition is still on and we need your help! Both Erin and I are convinced we each have the best pins on our lanyard, so share your comments with us and let us know who you think has the better pins.
