New Hidden Mickey Pins Arriving Soon at Disney Parks for 2014

posted on January 27th, 2014 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

HPT836755

I’m happy to share that new Hidden Mickey pins are arriving soon to cast members’ lanyards at Disney Parks. For those unfamiliar with these pins, the Disney pin team distributes these pins to Cast Members to use for trading with guests. The Hidden Mickey pin collection was first introduced at Walt Disney World Resort in 2002. Today, they have become something fun for guests to collect or trade while visiting Disney Parks. Jeanne Lewis, merchandiser for Disney pins, recently gave me a look at the first wave of pins for 2014. This year’s collections feature familiar Disney characters and icons from Disney Parks.

HMP837624

For Disneyland Resort, Jeanne included pins that were inspired by the beautiful tile artwork found outside Carthay Circle on Buena Vista Street (you can see a great video about the creation of those tiles in this Disney Parks Blog story). I also love the character tiki face and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit pins.

For Walt Disney World Resort, Jeanne continued the Magic Kingdom Parking Lot sign collection first introduced years ago. There is also a collection featuring the Seven Dwarfs, which is a slight nod to Seven Dwarfs Mine Train coming to New Fantasyland at Magic Kingdom Park in 2014.

There will also be one shared collection between Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. That collection features the “it’s a small world” attraction, which celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

As a reminder, there are a couple of ways to identify a Hidden Mickey pin. The pins typically measure about 1.25-inches and contain a small Mickey Mouse icon “hidden” in the artwork. The back of the pin will also have the words “Hidden Mickey pin.”

Happy Trading!

First Look at New Pins Coming to Disney Parks in 2014

posted on December 27th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

With the start of a new year, I stopped by merchandiser Jeanne Lewis’ office to get a first look at new Disney pins coming to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. These monthly or quarterly pin collections are a great place to start if you are new to collecting or trading pins. Here is a look at some of my favorites coming in 2014.

DPP8984661

The Piece of Disney History collection returns in 2014 as a monthly pin collection. Introduced in 2005, each limited edition pin in this collection contains small pieces of items from attractions or shows. For Walt Disney World Resort, the collection will contain items from the former SpectroMagic parade which originally debuted on October 1, 1991. For Disneyland Resort, the collection will contain items from various attractions such as a purple glove that Jessica Rabbit wore in Roger Rabbit’s Cartoon Spin at Disneyland park.

DPP8984662

The monthly, perfume bottle-inspired “Eau de Magique” collection will be shared between Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. Each limited edition pin will be attached to a scented backer card. Guests at Disneyland Resort should also look for the monthly “Funny Business” collection which features windows with some clever pretend businesses.

There are two different quarterly collections coming next year – “Keyhole Characters” for Walt Disney World Resort and “Ink and Paint Collection” for Disneyland Resort.

Jeanne also shared details about two surprise pin collections – a Steampunk-inspired “Mechanical Kingdom” for Florida and a music-inspired classic character collection for California. These surprise pins will be released at random times throughout the year. For the music collection, the pins can be placed next to each other to form a scene.

DPP898463

I also got a look at the “Characters & Camera” surprise pin set. This limited release 30-pin collection will be presented in a mystery boxes (two randomly selected pins per box), and will be released at random times and locations in Florida and California throughout the year. There will also be limited edition, monochromatic chaser pins included in this set. Each chaser pin will have an edition size of 250, and will be found at random in the mystery boxes.

DPP8984664

Finally, I couldn’t resist giving you a look at a jumbo-sized pin celebrating the upcoming 25th Anniversary of Disney’s Hollywood Studios this May.

Happy Trading!

Favorite Stocking Stuffers from Disney Parks for 2013

posted on December 16th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

A holiday tradition in my family was finding loose change, nuts and fruits like oranges and apples in the bottom of stockings. These items would usually accompany other small gifts both wrapped and unwrapped. Since there are only a few days left until Christmas, I thought I would offer a few of my favorite stocking stuffers from Disney Parks.

The image above contains three new holiday-themed antenna toppers along with new refrigerator magnets that look like iconic foods found at Disney Parks. I also selected some magnets, which I briefly discussed in a previous article. Finally, there are some new die-cast cars featuring holiday versions of characters from Disney•Pixar’s “Cars.”
Favorite Stocking Stuffers from Disney Parks for 2013

I love food so I selected a handful of holiday treats including fun concession candy, shortbread cookies and hot cocoa.

For those who want to add a little sparkle to a stocking, I suggest the small mini-nail polish or a compact mirror from Beautifully Disney. One of the most popular accessories at Disney Parks is a colorful acrylic bracelet with Mickey Mouse shapes.

Finally, I selected a new animated glow Olaf from Disney’s “Frozen” mostly because that film is incredible! If you are still undecided on what to give, I suggest a new holiday Disney Gift Card with limited-release pin.

Merry Christmas!

Warm Up To New Merchandise for Disney’s ‘Frozen’ at Disney Parks

posted on November 21st, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

FMM982651SMALL

I recently shared with you details about special makeover experiences at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutiques for Disney’s “Frozen.” These special looks feature the two princesses – Anna and Elsa – from the upcoming animated feature that arrives in theatres on November 27. Like previous animated features, such as Disney’s “Wreck It Ralph,” Disney Parks are carrying a selection of merchandise inspired by this new film. I visited a few Walt Disney World Resort locations to survey what we are offering.

FMM982652SMALL

For Disney’s “Frozen,” Disney Theme Park Merchandise again partnered with the Disney Stores to carry a selection of dolls, plush, toys and other items. The dolls include two new Disney Animator’s dolls featuring Anna and Elsa. There are other action figure playsets with a variety of characters from the film.

FMM982653THUMB FMM982654THUMB

For plush, we are carrying Olaf (seen in the first image above) as well as the reindeer, Sven. One of my favorite items is the signing Olaf plush. When you press his foot, he will speak and sing his hilarious song “In Summer” from the motion picture.

FMM982655SMALL

The softlines team created two apparel items – a T-shirt and long sleeve jacket for girls – along with costumes and accessories featuring Anna and Elsa.

FMM982656SMALL

There will also be a limited edition opening day pin being released in select locations at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts on November 21. The pin features Olaf and will have an edition size of 2,500.

Vinylmation collectors should look for two new items being released on November 22 at the D Street locations in Florida and California and on the Disney Parks online store. Disney artist Maria Clapsis designed a two-figure limited edition set (edition size 1,500) featuring Anna and Elsa.

Maria also designed a 3-inch figure of Olaf that will be sold as a new Vinylmation “Eachz” concept. This item will be sold as a mystery box with an edition size of 2,500. The more common figure to find is Olaf in winter, while Olaf in summer with his sunglasses and hat is rarer.

Meet the Disney Chefs Behind This Year’s Gingerbread Houses at Walt Disney World in November 2013

posted on November 11th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

Gingerbreadfixed1

This month, beautiful gingerbread houses are returning to select Disney Resorts at Walt Disney World Resort. As done in previous years, the Disney pin team has created several new limited-edition pins inspired by these marvelous creations. Jeanne Lewis, merchandiser for Disney pins, said the Disney pastry chefs selected each of the characters found on the pin designs. Here are some details about what you can expect, and how you can meet the chefs behind these holiday displays.

Gingerbread2

The pin for Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa this year commemorates the 15th anniversary of their gingerbread house. I was happy to see the infamous five-legged goat from the Grand Canyon Concourse made it to the Disney’s Contemporary Resort pin (I adore that mural created by Disney Legend Mary Blair). The gingerbread design at Disney’s Boardwalk is new this year. The pin features Mickey Mouse dressed like he is working in turn of the century soda shop (and now I want an ice cream milkshake!).

Gingerbreadfixed2

Here are the dates and times to meet the talented Disney chefs this month.

November 15

  • Meet pastry chef Jeff Barnes at Disney’s Contemporary Resort from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

November 16

  • Meet executive chef Erich Herbitschek from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa.

November 18

November 29

  • Pastry chef Matt Avery will be meeting with Guests from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Disney’s Boardwalk.

Window Shopping at Disney Parks Around the World: Boo-tiful Merchandise Materializes at Hong Kong Disneyland

posted on October 31st, 2013 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

I don’t want to appear completely transparent when I tell you this, but I love the merchandise that has recently materialized at Hong Kong Disneyland. I channeled my counterpart Fion Lai, and she told me she had special treats in store for you, and she was right! Take a look at the frightfully fun Halloween-inspired t-shirts, plush, frames, headwear, D-Tech, keepsake boxes, pens and keychains.

Looking for something else to get you in the spirit? Check out the collection of “Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas” merchandise including a t-shirt, headwear, plush, pillows, frames, totes, drinkware, a watch, D-Tech, pins and Vinylmation.

Because we are literally window shopping, I must remind you there isn’t a ghost of a chance of actually being able to purchase this product, unless you and/or someone you know is visiting Hong Kong Disneyland. But I hope that you enjoyed this glimpse into the crystal ball to see what is happening at Disney Parks around the world.
