New Merchandise for The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend at the Walt Disney World Resort on October 4-5, 2013

posted on October 2nd, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

“New

This weekend marks the return of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend at the Walt Disney World Resort. I’ll admit I’m not a runner, yet this event piqued my interest (especially considering I’m a super fan of The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror). I recently caught up with Mary Myers, merchandiser for runDisney events, who gave me an overview of several merchandise items being offered this weekend.
“New

I think one of my favorite items is the new pull-over “I Did It!” jacket. The best detail is the course map featured on the back. There is also a long sleeve shirt featuring a similar map on the back.
“New

Mary created several logo shirts for women and men that feature the race logo with Stitch and the Hollywood Tower Hotel.
“New

The race weekend will see other events besides the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler. There will also be the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run and runDisney Kids Races on Saturday morning. My son participated in one of the Kids Races several years ago and loved it (the best part is every child takes home a finisher medallion).

Mary created a few commemorative items for those additional events including a limited-release pin for the 5K Trail Run and an ear hat for the Kids Race. Pins were also created for the 10-miler along with a necklace and a logo glass.

Look for these items at Disney’s Health & Fitness Expo that will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. On Friday, October 4, the Expo will be open from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Expo will run from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 5.

I will be sending good thoughts to all participants this weekend. Don’t forget to use the hashtags #Tower10Miler or #HappyHaunted5k if you will be participating.

Disney ‘Planes’ Merchandise Lands in Disney Parks Merchandise Locations

posted on July 31st, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

Disney ‘Planes’ Merchandise Lands at Disney Parks, Including Dusty Crophopper Antenna Toppers

With Disney “Planes” flying into theaters on August 9, new themed merchandise has recently landed in select merchandise shops at Disney Parks. I recently visited Once Upon a Toy and World of Disney at Downtown Disney Marketplace to check out the new arrivals.

Like previous film releases such as Disney•Pixar’s “Brave” or Disney’s “Wreck-It Ralph,” the new merchandise is a combination of items from the national market (that is things you can find at your local Disney Store or online) and some unique development by Disney Theme Park Merchandise.

One of those unique items is the antenna topper shown above that resembles Dusty Crophopper. The souvenirs team told me this was one of the first times they included a propeller that actually spins on an antenna topper.

Another item created especially for Disney Parks is a four-pin set with characters from the animated feature.

My inner child really would love playing with all of the new toys. I recall countless hours playing with die-cast cars and planes as a child. Fortunately, I have a son who is still at that playful age, and I’m sure he will want one of everything.

Finally, there are new shirts and hats featuring characters and logos from the film.

Look for these items in multiple locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts.

I recently attended an advanced screening of the film and it was great! I found myself laughing quite a bit throughout the show. I hope to see you at the movies on August 9.

New Holiday Merchandise for 2013 on the Horizon at Disney Parks

posted on July 23rd, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

I recently turned the holiday spotlight on new collectible ear hat ornaments that are now available at select locations in Disney Parks and via the Disney Parks online store. Since we are celebrating “Christmas in July” this week as part of “Limited Time Magic,” I thought I’d give you a sneak preview of some additional holiday merchandise coming later this year.

New Holiday Merchandise for 2013 on the Horizon at Disney Parks

Pins have been a part of the holidays at Disney Parks for years. The two pins shown above are some of my favorites coming this season. The holiday light bulb with Mouse ears will be open edition, while the “Mele Kalikimaka” (a greeting I’m fond of using during the holidays) pin will have an edition size of 2,000.

New Holiday Merchandise for 2013 on the Horizon at Disney Parks

The softlines team shared a new youth shirt featuring Mike Wazowski from Disney•Pixar’s “Monsters, Inc.“, and a shirt for adults with Grumpy from Walt Disney’s “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” The shirts will be released at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

New Holiday Merchandise for 2013 on the Horizon at Disney Parks

Speaking of the Dwarfs, a limited edition ear hat ornament is set arriving at select locations in August. This set is similar to the Main Street Electrical Parade set I showed you a few weeks ago. Designed by Disney Design Group artist Cody Reynolds, the set contains Snow White and seven smaller ornaments resembling the Dwarfs. Cody referenced the costumes the Dwarfs wear at Disney Parks, which are more vibrant, when designing these ornaments. The set will have an edition size of 600 and a retail of $175 (plus tax).

New Holiday Merchandise for 2013 on the Horizon at Disney Parks

Duffy the Disney Bear will also get a new costume this year. Designed for the 17-inch bear, the costume set will include the outfit pictured above and a smaller Mickey Mouse plush. The popular 9-inch sized bear introduced last year will also return this year.

Finally, I love the new two-figure Vinylmation set with ice skating Mickey and Minnie Mouse as designed by Maria Clapsis.

Which item will you be giving as a gift this year?

Trade for New Hidden Mickey Pins Arriving at Disney Parks in Late July 2013

posted on July 11th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

Guests will soon be able to trade for new Hidden Mickey pins at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. I recently spoke with Jeanne Lewis, merchandiser for Disney pins, who told me that the next wave of the 2013 Hidden Mickey pin collection is arriving at Disney Parks by the end of July. I thought this was a good time to share what you may find when trading pins with Disney cast members this summer and fall.

New Hidden Mickey Pins at Disney Parks

These new pins follow the first part of the 2013 collection that was released in February (see this article for a look at those pins). As a reminder, these pins are distributed to cast members to use for trading with guests of all ages. Each pin measures approximately 1.25-inches and contain a small Mickey Mouse icon. This not-so-hidden icon is an easy way to identify Hidden Mickey pins on cast members lanyards.

New Hidden Mickey Pins at Disney Parks

I think my favorite collection for this series feature Disney birds (there is an owl!). This will be a bicoastal collection meaning that guests will find some Disney bird pins in California, which will be different than the Disney bird pins released in Florida.

Jeanne shared some additional insight into pins being released at Disneyland Resort. She said the Walt Disney’s “Peter Pan” collection honors the 60th anniversary of this animated classic this year. The “Just Got Happier” collection was inspired by signage found at the resort during the reopening of Disney California Adventure park. The White Glove silhouette pins include a variety of classic Disney characters who have worn gloves.

New Hidden Mickey Pins at Disney Parks

Jeanne’s favorite collection for Walt Disney World Resort is Pluto with the days of the week (I’m only collecting the Friday pins to celebrate my favorite day each week). Another fun collection features pins inspired by the oversized character statues found at Disney’s Pin Traders. This premiere pin trading location at Downtown Disney Marketplace opened in 2002, and the statues inside have become a great photograph spot.

This new collection will again include chaser pins, which are silver-colored counterparts to select pins in this series. They are a little more difficult to find when trading with cast members.

Which set is your favorite?

Spotlight on 2013 Posters for July, August and September from Disney Design Group

posted on July 9th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

With the start of summer, I’m turning the spotlight on the next series of 2013 posters from the Disney Design Group. This talented art department of Disney Theme Park Merchandise created a series of posters for an oversized 2013 calendar (you can find the Walt Disney World Resort version on the Disney Parks online store). You may recall my previous articles featuring posters for January through March and April through June on the Disney Parks Blog.

The 2013 Poster for July from Disney Design Group Features Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice

For July, Disney Design Group Creative Manager Doug Strayer selected Mickey Mouse as the Sorcerer’s Apprentice for his vintage style poster.

The 2013 Poster for August from Disney Design Group Features the Iconic Disney Railroad

One of my favorite posters was designed by artist Jon Bishop for the month of August. I love how he incorporated the iconic Disney Railroad into a strong, retro-graphic scene (the colors are great!). I also enjoy the little details found in each poster such as rocket ships reaching for the sky.

The 2013 Poster for September from Disney Design Group Features the Grandfather Clock from The Haunted Mansion

Graphic Designer Caley Hicks (of recent Disney’s “Beauty and the BeastVinylmation fame) created the incredible image for September. I asked her why she selected the grandfather clock from The Haunted Mansion for her poster.

“I love the Haunted Mansion and claimed it before any other artist could,” laughed Caley. “I like the connection between this year’s date and the clock striking 13. I thought the bold face would make for a captivating image. It was also a fitting choice, as September typically starts the Halloween season at Disney Parks.”

A Series of Vinylmation Figures and Limited Edition Pins Available Based on the 2013 Posters from Disney Design Group

As for previous months, we created a series of Vinylmation figures and limited edition pins based on the designs. As an added bonus, an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit pin and Vinylmation figure will be released in September. The design was based on a poster created for December 2012 by Darren Wilson. There will also be D-Tech on Demand cases for iPhone 4/4s and iPhone 5 featuring the railroad and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit posters. Look for them at a future date at Disney Parks.

Finally, you can find other 2013 related items, including some giclées of previous month’s posters on the Disney Parks online store.

Window Shopping at Disney Parks Around the World: A Summer Trip to Disneyland Paris

posted on July 3rd, 2013 by Michelle Harker, Manager, Merchandise Marketing & Communications, Disneyland Resort

It’s time to rack up some more virtual frequent flyer miles, as this “Window Shopping” expedition takes us back to Disneyland Paris. I asked my good friend, Junior Product Developer and 2011-2012 Disneyland Paris Ambassador, Regis Alart, what new and exciting things were debuting during the extended 20th Anniversary celebration. Here’s what he sent my way.

Disneyland Paris recently debuted their own version of “Glow With the Show” Ears, called Disney Light’Ears. Watch in amazement as the ears sync to the sights and sounds of Disney Dreams! and bring it to life in a dazzling new way. Take a look!

If you are wondering where you can find them during your next visit, they should be as close as Main Street, U.S.A., and will be about €20.

Now if pin collecting is more your style, then take a look at the art for these next few releases.

First up is a pin created in celebration of Bastille Day! While the actual holiday is July 14, look for the release of the limited edition 600 pin featuring Dumbo to occur on July 6 throughout the resort. How much is it? Only €12.99.

Limited Edition 600 Pin Featuring Dumbo in Celebration of Bastille Day at Disneyland Paris

Up next is a special release, as it commemorates the first anniversary opening of the World of Disney Store. Available on July 12 as part of this special celebration is a limited edition 600 pin for €12.99, and two deluxe prints (€69.00) which exquisitely capture the painted murals from the Disney Village flagship store. Look for this and more only at World of Disney Store.

Finally, if action and adventure is what you seek, then this 1993–2013 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Peril (or Indiana Jones et le Temple Du Peril) attraction pin is the treasure you have been looking for. The limited edition 600 pin will be available at Disneyland Paris for €12.99 on July 27 at Pueblo Trading Post in Frontierland.

Just a quick reminder, even though most of the merchandise highlighted in our “Window Shopping” trip posts will not be available to purchase online, in this particular case there is an exception. Guests who wish to inquire about remaining quantities of these pins may do so with the Merchandise Guest Services team at Disneyland Paris via dlp.pintrading.mail.order@disney.com, one month after each release.

‘The Lone Ranger’ Merchandise Rides into Locations at Disney Parks

posted on June 27th, 2013 by Steven Miller, Merchandise Communications Manager

‘The Lone Ranger’ Merchandise Rides into Locations at Disney Parks

With the upcoming release of Disney’s “The Lone Ranger,” in theaters on July 3, I rode out to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in search of new merchandise. I visited the AFI Showcase Shop located at the exit of the Studio Backlot Tour where I found a handful of items. Similar to other major film releases like “Monsters University” or “Wreck-It Ralph,” the Disney Theme Park Merchandise team partnered with the Disney Store to introduce things from the national market (you can find some of those items available on DisneyStore.com). There were some merchandise, however, created especially for Disney Parks.
‘The Lone Ranger’ Merchandise Rides into Locations at Disney Parks

One item that caught my eye was the Texas Rangers replica badge shown at the top of this article. This iconic badge was developed by our souvenirs team at Disney Theme Park Merchandise. The Disney Parks team also created a youth T-shirt featuring the two lead characters from the motion picture.

Other items include toys like action figures of the Lone Ranger, Tonto, and my favorite, Silver the horse. There are also a variety of LEGO playsets featuring scenes and characters from the film.

Finally, there was a new two-figure Vinylmation set that was released at the D-Street locations in both Florida and California and a limited release pin that has a spinner element.

I’m looking forward to seeing the film in theaters on July 3. From the extended previews I’ve seen, it looks to be filled with some great action and wonderful humor.
