This week, we shared that the stars of Disney’s new animated feature “Big Hero 6,” Hiro and Baymax, are heading to Disney Parks to greet their fans in November.

At Walt Disney World Resort, guests visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios can step inside The Magic of Disney Animation attraction to tour the lab from the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology and then meet Hiro Hamada and his huggable buddy Baymax in Hiro’s garage workshop.

At Disneyland park in California, the characters will find a home-away-from-home in a recreation of Hiro’s robotics workshop near the Starcade in Tomorrowland. Disneyland guests can also get an exclusive preview of the film at the “Special Extended Sneak Peek of ‘Big Hero 6,’” now playing in Tomorrowland’s Magic Eye Theater.

This week, we captured an unusual sight in the sky above Magic Kingdom Park – a rare lunar eclipse called a “blood moon.”

The moon added the perfect spooky atmosphere to our parks, especially Magic Kingdom Park, which is already decorated for Halloween. Photographers David Roark and Matt Stroshane were on hand to document the moon’s path over our parks.

This week, we officially welcomed the newest addition to our gorilla family troop at Disney’s Animal Kingdom in our weekly “Wildlife Wednesday” series. The new Western lowland gorilla is the second gorilla birth this year, and the fifth in the park’s history.

All Western lowland gorilla babies born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom have been a part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP), which ensures long-term survival of species by helping AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums manage species’ genetic diversity through detailed records of individual animals.

The 19th annual Epcot International Food & Wine Festival kicked off this weekend and we shared a few stories on the Disney Parks Blog to help during your visit, including Pam’s post featuring the top ten “must-try” new tastes at this year’s event.

There are 35 new food offerings this year and Pam recommended 10 to look forward to tasting. At the Farm Fresh Marketplace, there’s the perfect taste of Southern comfort food: griddled “Yard Bird” (chicken thigh) with collards and a dollop of the house-made habanero sauce. This week, Tom Staggs shared the exciting update that construction is starting at the Walt Disney World Resort on a brand new “Frozen” attraction at the Norway Pavilion in Epcot. The new attraction, which replaces Maelstrom, will take you to Arendelle and immerse you in many of their favorite moments and music from the film.

Tom also shared that “Frozen’s” popular characters will have a bigger presence at Magic Kingdom Park this holiday season. Queen Elsa will use her powers to transform Cinderella Castle into an ice palace every night starting in early November and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party-goers can see Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and Olaf in “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade.”

This week, we shared an exciting update that Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, one of Walt Disney’s earliest cartoon stars, is heading to Disney California Adventure Park in September.

Beginning September 14, you’ll be able to meet Oswald on Buena Vista Street at Disney California Adventure park. Just look for the lucky little rabbit strolling along the sunny side of the street. Shawn has some more details about Oswald in his original story.

And we also celebrated the season’s first of 26 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties to kick off the week. This year’s event offers a new character dance party at the Diamond Horseshoe Saloon in Frontierland and many more experiences you can read about in Jennifer’s original story.

Lady Tremaine takes over Cinderella’s Royal Table after everyone has gone to bed, and she’s invited some of the most evil friends and special guests for a decadent dessert party (maybe you’ll see the Evil Queen, Maleficent, Cruella de Vil or Dr. Facilier?).

Pam included more details about the experience in her original story as well as what your ticket includes:

  • Preferred Viewing for the 8:15 p.m. Mickey’s “Boo-to-You” Halloween Parade

This week, we introduced the newest member of the gorilla family troop at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and shared the first images of the little one with Disney Parks Blog readers.

The new baby, which is yet to be named, is the fourth gorilla born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom as part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan, which manages genetic diversity among species through detailed records of individual animals.

And Gary shared a new group of fun Disney Park “light painting” images that included the galaxy’s most famous villain, Darth Vader. Just like our July post, the designs were made in midair (without a guide or template) and the art was captured using long camera exposures that captured every move of the penlights. There were no chances to “erase” a mistake.
