The Florida Cup Brings The Beautiful Game to Walt Disney World Resort in January

posted on January 4th, 2016 by Darrell Fry, Sports Media Director, Walt Disney World Resort

You don’t have to travel halfway around the world to see many of the biggest names in international soccer. Just come to Walt Disney World Resort in January.

TBG58068

Several marquee soccer stars from Latin America and Europe will be here for the second annual Florida Cup soccer tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Some of the elite players expected to play in the tournament include Chicharito Hernandez, the Mexican National team star playing for Bayer Leverkusen, Brazilian soccer legend Ronaldinho, who is playing for Fluminense FC and Renato Augusto, the reigning Brazil League MVP who leads SC Corinthians, plus Santa Fe’s Omar Perez and SC Internacional’s Anderson.

That’s quite likely the most significant collection of international soccer talent ever in Central Florida. In fact, the field is noticeably larger than last year, expanding from four teams to nine and featuring top clubs such as two-time FIFA World Champion SC Corinthians, four-time Brazilian Champion Fluminense FC and Champions League club Bayer 04 Leverkusen.

The action starts January 10 with a doubleheader at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex between Santa Fe (Colombia) and Bayer (Germany) followed by Schalke (Germany) against the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. The tourney continues through January 20 with matches taking place at Florida venues such as Boca Raton and Fort Lauderdale in addition to Walt Disney World Resort.

The tournament also will involve a panel discussion featuring club and league representatives discussing a variety of soccer-related topics, including youth development, sports marketing and global league structures, among other subjects.

Tickets, which start at $35, are available for all matches at all Ticketmaster outlets, including Ticketmaster.com. Check out www.floridacup.com for the schedule, plus other information, and get yourself close to the action.

The 2016 Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend returns to Florida from January 6-10. I recently caught up with the product development team at Disney Theme Park Merchandise who gave me a first look at commemorative merchandise. This is the biggest runDisney event of the year, so here is a sampling of what guests may find during the upcoming weekend.

NFL Stars of Tomorrow and Top Cheer & Dance Teams Battle at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex

posted on December 18th, 2015 by Faron Kelley, Director of Non-Leisure Marketing and Sales Strategy

Last week, hundreds of the country’s top football, cheer and dance teams called ESPN Wide World of Sports home during the 59th Pop Warner Super Bowl and National Cheer & Dance Championships.

Teams from Missouri, Florida, Illinois and Pennsylvania won national titles in various age divisions. But all told, thousands of players, dancers and cheerleaders descended on Walt Disney World Resort for an unforgettable sports experience of a lifetime, including a private party at Disney’s Hollywood Studios during the week of competition.

And how’s this for national spotlight: SportsCenter was broadcasting live from ESPN Wide World of Sports on Friday, December 11. NFL analyst Herm Edwards joined hosts Chris McKendry and Jay Crawford to discuss the biggest headlines in sports amidst the Division II Pee Wee Championship Game.

More than 70 percent of today’s NFL players went through Pop Warner Little Scholars. And some of them culminated their youth careers hoisting the championship trophy at our house, just as many athletes did last weekend.

What will these kids do next?

runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend Style

posted on December 10th, 2015 by Aubrey Hang, Sports Marketing Community Manager, runDisney

What do you get when you mix running with Disney? Running through our incredible theme parks, world-class entertainment and, of course, characters! In fact, many participants transform into the themes of our weekends and channel their favorite Disney characters while creating their costumes. With the runDisney Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend presented by Cigna right around the corner, I’ve collected pictures from last year’s event that really showcase the spirit of the weekend.

Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is the only race weekend that has a 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. Within these four races there are also two challenges: the Goofy Challenge and the Dopey Challenge. Wondering what that means? Keep reading!

The Walt Disney World 5K is perfect for the whole family. The 5K theme is Pluto, and last year, runners really embraced their Pluto style!

Minnie Mouse is the star of the Walt Disney World 10K, which is a great distance for runners of all skill levels.

The Walt Disney World Half Marathon’s amazing 13.1 mile course is a runner’s delight, taking you through the magic, wonder, and sheer charm of Magic Kingdom Park, then on to Epcot, home of international World Showcase and Future World. The race concludes with a spectacular finish in the shadow of Spaceship Earth.

The Walt Disney World Marathon is an adventure! Being the only course that takes you through the four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks and the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, the only true owner of this race has to be Mickey Mouse!

There are two challenges within Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend. First, if you are “Goofy” enough to run the half marathon and marathon back-to-back, you will have successfully completed Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge. That’s 39.3 miles in two days!

The ultimate (and Dopiest!) challenge of Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend is the Dopey Challenge! The Dopey Challenge is 48.6 miles in four days. That is participating in all four races: the 5K, 10K, half marathon and marathon. In addition to the finisher medals, participants also receive the Goofy Challenge and Dopey Challenge medals upon completion of all four races within the pacing requirements.

Whichever distance you chose, Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend has something for everyone. For more information on upcoming races visit runDisney.com.

Latin Baseball Festival to Be a Cultural Affair at Walt Disney World Resort

posted on October 22nd, 2015 by Darrell Fry, Sports Media Director, Walt Disney World Resort

The Puerto Rican professional baseball games coming to Walt Disney World Resort next month are about to become more than just baseball games.

The Latin Baseball Festival, featuring two Robert Clemente Professional Baseball League teams, is going to be a true festival, a cultural affair surrounding the baseball games at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, November 20-22.

LBF_Logos

Before each game in the three-game series at Champion Stadium between the Cangrejeros de Santurce and the Indios de Mayaguez, there will be a festival atmosphere inside and outside the ballpark filled with Latin-inspired entertainment and activities, such as music, food, beverages and vendors, as well as a post-game jam after the Saturday November 21 game.

Among the musical acts expected to perform are Fusion Beat, the Leslie Cartaya Quartet and children’s musical group Atención-Atención, plus additional Orlando-area bands.

Single-game tickets range from $17.50 for lawn seats to $30 for lower level seating. Two-game packages (Saturday and Sunday) are $45 (upper level) and $54 (lower level). Group tickets are also available ($24-$27) as well as suites ($250-$2,000). Tickets can be purchase at www.latinbaseballfestival.com and all Ticketmaster locations, including www.Ticketmaster.com. And the best part is your ticket purchase includes access to the festival.

The games start at 7:30 p.m. Friday November 20; 3 p.m. on Saturday November 21; and 1 p.m. on Sunday November 22. The festival begins at 4:30 p.m. Friday; 3 p.m. on Saturday; and 11 a.m. on Sunday.

This is the first time Roberto Clemente League teams are playing regular-season games within the continental United States, so if you want to experience a taste of Puerto Rico and some big-league baseball in a magical sports setting, this event figures to be a real home run.

Senior Wins Disney Cross Country Classic Four Consecutive Years

posted on October 19th, 2015 by Aubrey Hang, Sports Marketing Community Manager, runDisney

Anna Flynn has traveled from The Ursuline School in New York to ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex the past four years to compete in Disney Cross Country Classic.

CCWA486891

During this year’s event, Anna became the first to ever win the race four years in a row! “I’ve never had a kid work harder, who was more committed and a great leader” said coach Jan Mitchell. “Anna helped organize activities for the three days our team was in Florida to have an amazing Walt Disney World vacation.”

Jan coached Anna and freshman sister, Sarah, who finished the race in second place. One of Anna’s early seasons goals was to win the Disney Cross Country Classic for the 4th year since it was the first race she ever won as a freshman. This race begins Anna’s farewell tour, this being her last year to participate at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Disney’s Night of Joy Expands in 2016

posted on September 25th, 2015 by Charles Stovall, Public Relations Manager

We’ve just gotten through the whirlwind of two sold-out evenings of Disney’s Night of Joy 2015; and now we have some exciting news to share about next year’s event.

In 2016, we’re expanding Disney’s Night of Joy. The concerts will be hosted in great indoor and outdoor venues at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, and Night of Joy guests will get admission to Magic Kingdom Park for fellowship and fun, with access to favorite attractions.

Hosting the concert portion of Night of Joy at the Sports Complex will allow more guests to attend the event, and indoor stages should make for a great music experience regardless of the weather.

Plus, dedicated transportation will be provided so that guests can easily move from Magic Kingdom Park to the Sports Complex.

Stay tuned to the Disney Parks Blog for more details.
