Arrr! How Will You Celebrate Talk Like A Pirate Day?

Ahoy, me hearties! (That means “hello my friends” in pirate-speak.) September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day. The day started as a joke back in 1996 by some guys in Oregon and become official in 2002. It’s a fascinating story actually.

So, what is it about a pirate that’s so intriguing? Is it the cool captain’s hat? The parrot on the shoulder? The skull & crossbones logo? All that pirate booty?

As you know, we work with pirates here at the Disneyland Resort. You can find them inside the classic attraction, Pirates of the Caribbean, or walking around Adventureland. (I especially like to see that old scallywag Captain Jack Sparrow.)

Pirates of the Caribbean been a guest favorite since it opened July 24, 1966. In the video included in this post, you’ll see some of our park guests doing their best to talk like a pirate.

And now, in the spirit of International Talk Like A Pirate Day, “I be boardin’ one of the boats in Pirates of the Caribbean and takin’ a ride back in time. Arrrr! So, weigh anchor matey!” (That means “Let’s go!” in pirate-speak.) Savvy?

  • Turn on Pirate English on my facebook page! try it! It makes for a whole new experience.

  • We rode Pirates of the Caribbean yesterday. We just happened to be at D-Land for a B-Day celebration.

  • Arrrr! 😀
I’ll be dressing and talking like a pirate all day tomorrow with my mum!

  • You might want to edit your original post for accuracy. Pirates of the Caribbean opened in Disneyland in March of 1967, not July of 1966 (that’s when New Orleans Square itself opened).

  • Peter, I also thought it opened in March. March 18th, 1967 to be exact.
    I love pirates!!

  • my swim coach lets us “walk the plank” (jump off the diving board) every year for talk like a pirate day! it’s so fun!

  • Applause to the pirates in the video!

  • We love pirates in our house! We usually wear pirate t-shirts on one day of our annual 4-day Disneyland trip. The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is also a favorite!

  • I loves me some Talks Like A Pirate Day. Avast me hardies!

  • I will probably continue helping my daughter plan her pirate costume for Halloween! We bought a jacket at the thrift store that I’m going to doctor up and we also found a pirate hat. Next is filling in the other key pirate accessories – minus the sword, the school she attends won’t allow that!

  • A pirate walked into a bar with a paper towel on his head. The bartender asked him why the paper towel was on his head, and the pirate replied…

“ARRRG I got a bounty on me head”

  • It says POTC opened in July, but wasn’t it March, 1967?

  • I love it that my daughter’s birthday and International Talk Like A Pirate Day are the same. The timing is sure to make for some great theme parties as she gets a little older! 🙂

  • Q. How much does it cost a pirate to get earrings?
    A. A Buccaneer!
Yes I know it’s corny, but it’ll get you in the mood for talk like a pirate day!!!!
