Celebrating January Birthdays: Sterling Holloway

George Savvas

by , Director, Public Relations, Disneyland Resort

For me, January has always been a special month to think about birthdays (hint-hint). So, I thought it might be fun this month to look through our publicity photo archive for some photos of celebrities with a special relationship to us who were born in the month of January.

The first one I found is the one and only Sterling Holloway, born January 4, 1905. Mr. Holloway performed the voice of so many Disney characters, I think some of them may surprise you. He was of course known as the voice of a certain honey-loving bear, but he was also the voice of the stork in “Dumbo,” Kaa in “The Jungle Book,” the Cheshire Cat in “Alice in Wonderland,” and most surprising to me, adult Flower in “Bambi.” Is it any wonder he was named a Disney Legend in 1991?

Sterling Holloway and Winnie the Pooh

This picture was taken in 1968 at Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland park and itโ€™s so fun to see these two together. I can almost hear that distinctive chuckle weโ€™ve all come to know and love.

Check back soon for our next January birthday celebration.

  • I had no idea he was the voice of the Cheshire Cat, but look at that smile, it had to be him! ๐Ÿ™‚ And I’m pretty sure that’s Roy Disney, Walt’s brother in the background.

  • *5 Mickey’s out of 5!*
    (No more rating charts?)

  • My favorite voice actor of all time!

  • I love starting each new year with my birthday on Jan. 2nd. Maybe in 2012 I can come to Disneyland for my big 50 th. When is Stacia’s birthday??

  • Great Picture! @ Edward, I thought the exact same thing about it looking like Walt in the background! Crazy stuff ๐Ÿ™‚

  • I knew Mr. Holloway’s grandson or son? when I attended Valley Jr. College in the mid-50s, when ever it opened.

  • I thought the same thing, strange similarity

  • I have Sterling Holloway’s autograph. I loved him in the old Christmas Classic “Remember The Night” (with Barbara Stanwyck and Fred MacMurray). What a memorable actor!

  • Doesn’t that man in the background look exactly like Walt Disney? But it couldn’t be since the picture is from 1968 and Walt died in 1966….weird.

  • He is absolutely a legend!! He’s one of the main people I look up to when it comes to voice acting. It’s my dream to some day have a career in it. Another is Paige O’Hara. Such talented people!

    Happy birthday Sterling!
