Disneyland Resort at Dawn: Big Thunder Trail

The inspiration for this “Disneyland Resort at Dawn” video came from my son. When he was younger he wasn’t quite ready to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, so while the older kids went on the attraction we would go check out the fish near Big Thunder Trail. I heard that fishing is best in the early morning, so I had to see for myself if they were jumping.

Do you know the name of this pond, where the fish jump under the shadow of Big Thunder Mountain? Leave your answers in the comments, and I’ll post the answer later today.

  • Was that called the Beaver Valley pond?

  • Hummmm…something to do with natures wonderland?

  • old Beaver Valley pond

  • Does anyone else kinda see a hidden Mickey at the 41 second mark?

  • John – I agree! It does look like a hidden Mickey in the waterfall.

  • Another great video in this series!

I think that Mya and Eric are correct about the name.

  • Mya, Samantha and Eric – great guesses! The correct name is Bear Pond.

  • Bear Pond! I didn’t know that…nice trivia question! I do remember that the railroad trestle going over that pond was very “rickety” and you never knew how long it might last!

  • Looks great.

  • Just wanted to comment on how beautiful that video is! We sometimes think about all the giggles and screams at Disney parks but it’s the unexpected quiet beauty that takes your breath away. Thanks for sharing!

  • Hmm. The framed Disneyland map (printed 1968) on my office wall shows this area as “Beaver Pond.” I’m certainly not disputing the facts with the expert :-), so maybe I’m looking in the wrong area. This area was originally part of the Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland attraction so it’s changed quite a bit.

  • When Big Thunder was done in 1979, we called it Bear Pond. I was wondering what happened to the mine trestle and ore car that sat on it since Big Thunder opened? It was the last piece of the original Nature’s Wonderland train trestle that extended from the tunnel and formed a loop to the boarded up tunnel by the Big Thunder exit. It really is missing???
