Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse Statue at Disneyland Resort

I’m sure many Disney Parks Blog readers have been to the Disneyland Resort multiple times. I’d even concede that you know much more about the Resort than even I do. But there are some things you might not know. I’ve recently found some interesting facts about the Disneyland Resort that I thought you might enjoy!

  • Disneyland opened on July 17, 1955, with 18 major attractions. Today, there are more than 60 adventures and attractions at the Resort.
  • When Mickey & Friends parking structure opened on June 27, 2000, it was the largest parking structure in North America.
  • More than 5,000 gallons of paint are used each year to give the Disneyland Resort its better-than-new look.
  • More than 800 species of plants from more than 40 nations are represented at the Disneyland Resort. The landscape panorama includes approximately 17,000 trees and 100,000 shrubs. Each year, about 1 million annuals are planted at the Disneyland Resort.
  • Trees at the Disneyland Resort range in size from a one-foot dwarf spruce in Storybook Land to 80-foot-high eucalyptus trees.
  • The Mickey Mouse floral “portrait” at the Disneyland park main entrance is planted six times a year.
  • The Disneyland Resort uses 1,000 brooms, 500 dust pans and 3,000 mops a year.
  • A new Disneyland Resort cast member costume takes from eight to 12 months to design and produce. The Operational Costume Division stocks 500,000 yards of material, covering 900 different fabrics.
  • More than 300 different cast member costumes, comprised of more than 850 different styles of garment pieces, are issued from nine Costume Issue locations across the Disneyland Resort and Hotels.
  • Approximately 300,000 buttons are replaced each year on cast member costumes.

So there you go, Disneyland experts! A little more to add to your knowledge bank. What else would you like to know about Disneyland Resort? Let me know in the comments and I’ll see what I can find!

  • Erin, Do you know if Disneyland is planning on re-opening The People Mover in Tomorrowland? The track is still there, I noticed it when I went to Disneyland just last month, and me and my sister both recalled going on The People Mover back in 1985. We both wanted to ride on it again. I was wondering since Disneyland seems to bring back certain attractions, re-worked in Tomorrowland. I hope it will be back in the near future! Thanks, and I love your blog here, it is so helpful!

  • I love the facts! how many hidden mickeys do you think there are in the disneyland park only?

  • Love this Erin! Thanks for sharing!…sheesh I thought I lost a lot of buttons each year…

  • Erin,
On the windows on main street there are names of those who helped build Disneyland or were part of the Disney family. Recently Fess Parker was added to the windows near the horseshoe review. My queion is … How many of the names on the windows were actual Disney family? How many were entertainers? and How many were actual builders of the parks. As a HUGE WALT fan and a fan of the parks I am curious to hear the answer. Have a Disney Day!

  • When did Disneyland start staying open on Christmas Day? In the late 60’s my parents decided to surprise us kids with Christmas at Disneyland. However when we got there, we found out it was closed. Needless to say there were 4 sad kids in the car on the trip back home.

  • There’s a remote control [mostly] hidden in the Star Tours queue. I’ve got a photo to prove it. Is it an inside joke?

  • My little Disney fact is that when you are riding the Haunted Mansion ride you actually leave the park for a bit…

  • Wow, that is a lot of stuff! Also, that is a beautiful photo. Thanks for the fun facts, Erin! 🙂

  • What about facts for Disney world? I also like the picture. One blogger had a good picture of the Mickey statue at Disney land where he used a disco ball, can you get a print of that one? And why was the castle lit up at that time of morning?

  • Also some more facts:

There plants represneting all 6 inhabital contenat

Currently the Mickey & Friends is the 2 Largest parking structure in North America, 3rd in the World (The 2nd is at the Disneyland Tokyo Resort in Japan)

The Floral Mickey in the front of the park is at a slant to make the apperance of it being an actual full size Mickey Mouse head.

The Grizzly River Run attraction is drained every night into the water feauter next to Pacific Warf every night and when ever the attraction is under maintance to help save water.

  • …Oh, and Erin, do you happen to know when the Blue Sky Cellar will get an update?

  • Hey Erin…..would you like a little help with some of these questions? The only ones I hadn’t already read about were your particulars on the parking structure, the M.M. floral portrait, the cleaning tools and the buttons.
The Disneyland resort employs about 20,000 castmembers. Most of the lights in Peter Pan’s Flight are created using fiber optics. Last time I checked, the electrical parade runs in Ca. Adv. Park as ‘Disney’s’ or ‘The Disney electrical parade’. Many of these questions(and many others)can be answered in the book:’The Disneyland Resort Trivia Challenge'(At least I think that’s what is’s called) which is available for purchase at the resort. I’m going to the Disneyland resort next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I can’t wait and I’m SOOOOOO EXCITED!!!

  • Hi Erin,

Thanks for the informative and interesting post! How’s about some “most/least” facts? Like most attended attraction, longest line ever, least busiest ride (during various times of day/year)? Even other things like Walt’s favorite ride (PotC?), and factoids from the other parks around the world would be a treat too! ºoº

  • How about some BACKSTAGE MAGIC???? Fireworks, parades, special effects (like how mickey’s talking head works), shows (maybe a behind the scenes of fantasmic? or in the fantasmic basement)

    • I love the “Fantasmic!” idea, David. You may have inspired the next “Things You Might Not Know” post. 🙂

  • Here’s a question that nobody in the parks is ever able to answer for me: Walt’s famous quote about Disneyland never being completed led him to keep one of the spires on Sleeping Beauty Castle unfinished. This unfinished spire was representative of this quote. When the castle was re-decorated for the 50th anniversary it was rumored that the spire had been completed. My question is: Which spire is it, and was it in fact completed?

  • Is the Talking Mickey technology going to be used extensively in the future? Can we have another update on the Rennovation of DCA?

  • Thanks for this great post Erin!

Dean–I agree, I love Disneyland Resort the best!

I also agree with Mary, I’d love another update on Cars Land. 🙂 Speaking of which, I am really looking forward to seeing the Parks and Resorts pavilion at the D23 Expo next weekend, the expo website says that there are going to be actual props and ride vehicles from Radiator Springs Racers on display!

  • Liz & Dean,

The Electical Parade is usually brought back during the holidays. It looks like right now it’s in FL so hopefully they bring it back in the winter. I would keep an eye around that time.

  • @Kristin, Tinker Bell began flying over Sleeping Beauty Castle (from the Matterhorn) since 1961.

  • Are each of the Sleeping Beauty Castles different in shape for each the parks?

  • Another fun fact about Disneyland is that when metal/alum/stainless material is needed for a ride Disney has a strict ‘domestic’ only!! I should know…they buy from MY company here locally in Irvine and they request always ‘made in the usa’

  • My favorite place to go..and can’t WAIT till xmas this year. A while back, you ran a little video about ‘disneyland after midnight’ and it featured the over 5000 employees that work each night..can you re-run that or let me know where in the archives. I have searched more than I care to admit but can’t find it. It talked about the refueling cars, construction, fire inspections, watering, etc was amazing. It’s no wonder DL always looks fabulous every single day and evening!!

  • Wow, I would’ve guessed that the Mall of America had the biggest parking structure (been there once), when it first opened. I park in Mickey & Friends all the time, I was happy when it opened, because I like to park in covered (from heat or rain) lots.

  • I love the way everything always looks “new” at Disneyland! I have been enjoying Disneyland since my childhood and am happy to be sharing my love for all things Disney with my grandkids!!!

@Laura, from what I have heard the Cars Land attraction was supposed to open in the late spring/early summer 2012 But have heard they are a few months behind due to all the rain we had in California this past year. I am taking my family in Sept or Oct of 2012 just to be sure it has opened my grandson is also waiting for Cars Land. We can’t wait!

How about another update on the progress????

    • Mary (and everyone else who is excited for Cars Land) – I’m always keeping my ears peeled for news to share here on the blog! Stay tuned.

  • I am curious. I saw somewhere that Tinkerbell had been flying over Cinderella Castle for a little over 25 years. But when I was a little girl Tinkerbell used to fly over the park, I think maybe to the Matterhorn. Since I am almost 50, and I remember this from when I was like 5 or 6, how long has Tinkerbell been flying?

  • Corey, I’m not sure if this is exactly what you want to know, but Disneyland uses more than 100,000 light bulbs, including 11,000 “rim lights” that outline the buildings on Main Street, U.S.A.

  • The floral portrait in front of Disneyland is so iconic and unique. The flower welcome must be one of the most photographed setting in Southern California.

  • I was wondering if Disney was still testing the (Talking Mickey)Head gear that’s being used at Mickey’s House in Toontown. On any other disney characters, and when those may be out. Thanks very much…

  • When is the new Cars land going to open next year….we are wanting to come with friends but want to make sure their little boy gets to experience that since he is a big fan!!

  • Agree with Corey It would be amazing to know how many lights are used or bulbs are gone thru on all the rides and shows. also how mnay cast members does it take to run disneyland. Also more info on Cal. Adv. would be amazing too!!

  • I love interesting facts about DL:)BTW is the picture you used available for print? I’ve been looking for one for our daughters room. All of mine have people everywhere of course. Really would like a print of the one you posted:)

  • I agree with Liz from UT! I wasn’t able to see the Main Street Electrical parade because I wasn’t born when It was around! When is it coming back?!

  • Curious to know about the lighting. Any estimate as to how many light bulbs are used throughout the park, including smaller lights used on rides such as Peter Pan’s Flight and Space Mountain?

  • When is Disneyland bringing back the electrical parade?? I remember I always loved seeing that amazing parade and the song still brings a smile to my face. Bring it back!!

  • Oh Yeah!!! Disneyland is the best theme park resort in the world!!!

I would like to know some facts about Disney California Adventure and Downtown Disney. Also, how many famous people have been there over the years?

  • Hmm, all interesting facts. I’m surprised DR doesn’t use MORE brooms/mops actually. I love how the floral portrait changes with the seasons.
