‘Dancing Lights’ Shine Bright at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Each year, the cast and crew who maintain The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights – Presented by SYLVANIA at Disney’s Hollywood Studios work to make the holiday display bigger and better. For 2011, the display includes several technological advances as well as tributes to Jennings Osborne, the creator of this holiday spectacle, who passed away in July.

Something new to look for this year is the canopy of lights that hangs over part of the Streets of America. New RGB (red, blue, green) LEDs mean the canopy can now project millions of different color combinations.

Jennings Osborne was a big Elvis Presley fan, so in tribute, the King’s “Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)” is now one of the songs that makes those five million lights dance. To see another tribute, watch this video from Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights show director John Phelan.

Keep watching the Disney Parks Blog for another video about the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, including the lowdown on Hidden Mickeys in the display – and one other hidden figure who secretly moves from place to place each year.

  • We had a week in WDW (from the UK) at the beginning of Nov and went to see the lights on Friday 11th, saw them dance the first time and then a tech fault meant that they did not dance again up to the time we left the park at 7pm, such a shame as the lights are a fav of ours.

Never mind, gives me a reason to go back! Put the Trans SO and David Foster on the iPod when we got back to get a reminder!

  • I went last night, and as usual is one of the greatest events in the parks, but, as above: is the Trans Siberian Orchestra been taken out of the song lineup? I think it is the best song ever for the Dancing Light Display.

  • The Osborne Lights display looks more impressive each and every year… in pictures and online videos at least. I bet it looks even better in person – I hope to go out there and see it myself someday! But for the near term, this SoCal Disneylander hopes that once the Buena Vista Street and Hollywoodland improvements are finished at DCA, that we can get our own West Coast version of the Osborne Lights going in Anaheim every year!

  • We were there almost two weeks ago. We had asked some cast members (WISH I got their names!) for some clues in locating the black cat, since we were unable to spot him…And because of the LUCKY black cat, my son was asked lights for the night…..It was such an AWESOME memory! The joy on his face will delight my heart for years to come! And the show is amazing. The cast members (we did meet Tom) who work hard on this for so many months are truly appreciated! Their job really does bring magic to many! THANK YOU!!!!!

  • Awesome! Jennings Osborne was an angel here on earth. It’s only fitting that he is represented this way. I saw them in 2010. With the updates, I’m already planning to see them again next year!!

  • We leave for our WDW trip tomorrow and can’t wait to see the lights!! Amazingly in all the times that I have been to WDW around the holidays I have never seen them.

  • Duffy, ShellieMay, their grandmommy and I loved learning about the Special Angel for Mr. Osborne!

  • I am wondering what the song list is for this year. One year my favorite song from Trans Siberian Orchestra: Christmas Eve was featured. Is it featured again this year or another Trans Siberian Orchestra song?
