Vintage Walt Disney World: A Muppetational Television Special

As we all prepare for Muppet domination this weekend when Disney’s The Muppets draws crowds to theaters, I thought it would be fun to take a look back at another Muppet production that happened right here at Walt Disney World Resort.

The Muppets at Walt Disney World

In May 1990, “The Muppets at Walt Disney World,” a one-hour television special, had the entire Muppet crew visiting a Florida swamp to meet Kermit’s family. Of course, when the gang figures out that Walt Disney World is just across the swamp, they insist on visiting the vacation kingdom.

The special takes the Muppets all over the Resort including Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa where Miss Piggy checks in for a stay (above), and Fozzie and his Mom take a break for some tea (below).

And while I haven’t seen “The Muppets at Walt Disney World” (though I wish I had, it looks fantastic), I have seen the new Muppet movie. It’s silly, fun, and an overall great time at the movies. So check it out after you’re stuffed yourself silly with turkey – you’ll be glad you did.

  • Yes I agree as well, this would be a perfect Blu-Ray release alone or as a bonus feature on “The Muppet’s” Blu-Ray.

  • Just watched this on YouTube. Very funny! I’d love to see an updated edition with some of the newer rides! Or better yet – I’d love to see new ATTRACTIONS at WDW featuring the Muppets. (The Great Muppet Movie Ride was a fantastic attraction concept!!!!!)

  • Is this available anywhere or will it be coming out on DVD sometime soon? I would love to get it!

  • We taped “The Muppets at Walt Disney World” when it first aired. Used to play it in the old minivan for the kids when we traveled down to WDW. Too bad it never made it to DVD. Would be fun for the whole family to relive the memories.

  • Not only did I see the special when it aired but also had the THRILL OF A LIFE TIME to see part of it being filmed at EPCOT while on vacation. (The part where Dr Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker are walking thru the park and they are by a lamp post). And if seeing the Muppets in person wasn’t enough, had the extreme pleasure of meeting and talking to Jim Henson between takes. A vacation I will never forget and agree with Otto. Having that special as part of a bonus feature on a Blu Ray release somewhere would be wonderful. I would LOVE to see it again.

  • this needs to be released on DVD/Bluray… old VS copy I taped off of NBC (including Michael Eisners intro) is starting to look bad 🙂

  • I’ve seen the muppets around the world and it’s HILARIOUS!!! Gonzo explors the Utilidors with Carmila and Mrs. Piggy is forced on to some thrill rides! Animal and th Band go on a “world tour” at EPCOT and they had broke into the resort at MGM Studios (now hollywood studios) so a scuirety chases them all around and on of the rats help him and my favorite joke is:
Rat: I can help you catch those Muppets just listen to me.
Security Guard: No thanks i don’t take orders from rodents.
Rat: Hey! What do you mean? Your boss is Mickey Mouse 🙂

  • I actually had taped this special when it aired back in the day. I won’t spoil the ending for you, but it was cute and amusing all at once, and it made the Muppets look good. I still watch it from time to time, and still enjoy it. I’ll also be going to see the new Muppets movie tomorrow. I’m looking forward to laughing at it.

  • I remember this special and loved it.

I also just got back from seeing “The Muppets” with my sister and my nephews and we ALL loved it. I highly recommend it. Yay for the return of the Muppets!

  • I have also never seen the television special. How wonderfull would it be if it was an extra on the blu ray of the new Muppet movie? I would love it.
And seeing the skyride back again makes me wonder how great it would be to “fly” over the new expension at Magic Kingdom!
    Love the Muppets!
